Description

The page https://playwright.dev/docs/testing-library navigates to https://playwright.dev/docs/next/testing-library when I have shift pressed and certain mouse interactions happen. The interactions that trigger it include moving over something, scrolling horizontally with mouse wheel - that's what has reliably been triggering the unwanted and disruptive navigation for me. This happens on Windows and on Mac, both in latest Chrome.

Hi, I'm the Playwright bot and I took a first look at this.

Reproduced — and it's not the mouse wheel, it's the Shift key. playwright.dev has an intentional easter-egg: pressing Shift 5 times jumps to the unreleased (/next/) docs. The catch is that the counter in static/js/redirection.js has no timeout and only resets when a different key is pressed — so five Shift presses accumulate across a whole browsing session and fire the jump. Since you hold Shift to scroll horizontally with the wheel, you rack up those five presses just reading the page, and get teleported to /docs/next/testing-library. Browser-agnostic; nothing wheel-specific about it.

What I ran

Live https://playwright.dev/docs/testing-library, Chromium via Playwright @next:

• 5 discrete Shift presses, no wheel at all → navigates to /docs/next/testing-library.
• Shift + wheel (horizontal or vertical) → same jump, on the 5th Shift.
• Wheel only, no Shift → no navigation.
• The trigger fires on the 5th Shift regardless of direction or timing between presses.

The keydown handler lives in static/js/redirection.js in the microsoft/playwright.dev repo (the site source), so a fix would land there — e.g. resetting keyPressState on a short timeout so only a deliberate quick 5-tap counts, rather than cumulative Shift use.
