Setting up Gemini Code Assist Standard is a PITA

Already had Claude Code and Codex setup in VScode. Decided to install the equivalent version of Gemini. Started with the free individual version, then moved to the Standard plan ($20/month). What a PITA to setup.

• Download Gemini Code Assist extension
• Download Google Cloud Code extension (required for Standard plan)
• Download Jupyter extension (dependency for Google Cloud Code)
• Then had to use multiple AI–first Perplexity, then Claude–to figure out how to purchase and activate the license. At least 5 separate steps using Google's awful web interface.

Then found out that Gemini 3.1 Pro is not available on the Standard plan. Google is definitely not targeting solo developers.

Oh whaaat! although, doesn't suprise me.
I've had so much trouble with configuring Google offerings in the past, makes sense the AI space has similar issues.
Claude is just so straight forward.
