Follow-up to #1375 (Blender Bridge). The panel left users guessing: the status stayed on "Unknown — press Test Connection", a Store-installed Blender was reported as "not found", a nonexistent addons folder was shown in green, and a yellow banner made the optional checkout look required.

Changes

  • Automatic connection check. The addon socket is probed in the background when the panel is built, each time the Generative tab is shown, and after a host/port change. One probe runs at a time; a request during a probe re-runs it, so the shown result always matches the current endpoint. Test Connection is now a manual re-check and no longer disables the action buttons.
  • Blender detection (BlenderDetection): Microsoft Store installs (per-user %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\BlenderFoundation.Blender*; the WindowsApps install folder is not readable), Steam's default library on Windows/macOS/Linux, and Linux per-user flatpak. If the socket check fails and no Blender app is detected, the error keeps its instructions first and adds "(Blender app not detected on this machine.)".
  • Addon status line: shows "(not created yet)" when the resolved addons folder does not exist, and "BlenderMCP addon: installed / not installed". It is green only when the addon is installed (and matches the checkout when one is set).
  • Checkout is optional: the yellow banner is replaced by a neutral note ("Only for blender-mcp addon developers…"), and the label says "(optional)". Sync Addon / Check Updates still need the checkout.
  • Import button renamed to "Import Blender Selection (GLB)", with a tooltip that says what it exports, where it imports, and what it needs.

Testing

  • New McpBlenderBridgePanelTests (7 tests): addon status for missing folder / folder without addon.py / installed / checkout in sync or different; neutral checkout note and button text; automatic probe reaching a fake addon on a local TcpListener without disabling actions; closed port reports unreachable.
  • BlenderDetectionTests: Store package prefix match, other packages ignored, missing/unreadable root, Steam path per platform.
  • EditMode on Unity 2021.3 (AssetGen + Blender + window characterization): 282 passed, 0 failed, 2 skipped (opt-in live catalog tests).
  • tools/compile-check.sh passes on 2021.3.45f2 and 2022.3.62f2 (win/osx/linux).
  • Checked live in a Unity 6000.6.4f1 project on Windows with a Microsoft Store Blender 5.2.2: the panel probed on open, showed "not reachable" with the connect instructions (no "not detected" note, so the Store install is found), and showed the addons folder as "(not created yet) · BlenderMCP addon: not installed".

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Blender detection now recognizes additional Steam and Linux Flatpak locations, as well as per-user Microsoft Store installations on Windows.
    • The Blender Bridge automatically checks its connection and displays the result, with detailed status available in a tooltip.
  • Updates

    • Clarified that a local addon checkout is optional; importing selections and taking screenshots do not require one.
    • Addon status now distinguishes missing folders, uninstalled addons, and checkout differences.
    • Renamed the import action to “Import Blender Selection (GLB).”

…ll state

- Probe the BlenderMCP addon socket automatically (in the background) when the
panel is built, each time the Generative tab is shown, and after a host/port
change. One probe at a time; a request during a probe re-runs it so the shown
result always belongs to the current endpoint. Test Connection is a manual
re-check and no longer disables the action buttons.
- Detect Microsoft Store Blender (per-user %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\
BlenderFoundation.Blender* folder; the WindowsApps install dir is unreadable),
Steam's default library on Windows/macOS/Linux, and Linux per-user flatpak.
A Store-only machine was reported as "Blender app not found".
- The addons line now says when the resolved folder does not exist yet and
whether addon.py is installed, and is green only when the addon is installed
(and matches the checkout when one is set). It used to show a nonexistent
  folder in green.
- Replace the yellow "pick your checkout" banner with a neutral note: the
checkout is optional and only for addon developers (Sync Addon / Check
Updates). Rename the import button to "Import Blender Selection (GLB)" and
explain what it needs in its tooltip.

Blender detection now checks additional executable locations and Windows Store package directories. The Blender Bridge panel performs automatic socket probes, updates addon status, and clarifies checkout and import requirements. New edit-mode tests cover detection and panel behavior.

Changes

Blender Bridge

Layer / File(s) Summary
Blender installation detection
MCPForUnity/Editor/Helpers/BlenderDetection.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/AssetGen/BlenderDetectionTests.cs
Detection checks added Steam and Flatpak executable paths and Windows Store package directories. Tests cover candidate paths, package-name matching, and failure cases.
Bridge panel status and probing
MCPForUnity/Editor/Windows/Components/AssetGen/McpAssetGenSection.uxml, MCPForUnity/Editor/Windows/Components/AssetGen/McpBlenderBridgePanel.cs
The panel probes the configured socket during construction, refresh, endpoint changes, and manual checks. Probe requests are queued while another probe runs. Addon status distinguishes folder and installation states, and checkout comparison runs when the addon is installed and a checkout is configured. The panel labels the checkout as optional and clarifies import requirements.
Bridge panel behavior tests
TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Blender/McpBlenderBridgePanelTests.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Blender/McpBlenderBridgePanelTests.cs.meta
Tests cover addon and checkout status, panel text and buttons, and socket responses from a fake addon and a closed port.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 021a8

On machines with slow filesystem paths, a failed connection check can briefly freeze the Unity editor. This is a bounded merge risk, but moving detection off the editor thread would address it.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 021a8

Exposure remains limited to the user's configured Blender connection, with localhost as the default. However, opening or refreshing the panel now processes responses automatically, and the existing response reader has no size limit.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Automatic panel checks newly reach an existing response reader that accumulates peer-controlled bytes and repeatedly parses the entire accumulated response without a size limit. A malicious configured peer could impose substantial memory and CPU costs on the Unity Editor without a Test Connection click. The reader predates this PR; the worsened exposure is its automatic invocation. Timeouts and exception handling do not provide a response-size budget.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified resource-exhaustion path affects the Unity Editor process contacting the configured peer. Preferences are per user and default to 127.0.0.1:9876. An attacker must control or impersonate that peer; this path does not establish remote preference modification, tenant-wide exposure, or privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A malicious configured peer can return oversized or incomplete JSON to an automatic get_scene_info check. Received bytes grow a MemoryStream, and every chunk triggers decoding and parsing of the accumulated payload. This creates a conditional denial-of-service path with increased automatic reachability, not a demonstrated exploit or a newly introduced reader defect.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing client trusts the configured TCP peer's JSON status response and shows reachability rather than authenticated addon identity. Its request carries a command and empty parameters, not credentials or executable code. Host preferences permit non-loopback endpoints; the traced client performs no TLS or peer-authentication exchange. These transport properties predate this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Connection waiting, stream reads, and incomplete-response processing have timeout checks; disposable socket resources and caught exceptions contain ordinary failures. The probe defaults to ten seconds. These controls limit ordinary waits but leave response bytes and repeated parsing work without a separate budget.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give automatic probes an explicit response-size budget and reject oversized responses before further accumulation or parsing. A lightweight bounded health response would also avoid repeatedly parsing full scene information solely to establish reachability.

Move Blender filesystem detection off the editor thread.

After a failed socket probe, ProbeConnection calls BlenderDetection.IsInstalled() on the editor context. The lookup checks PATH candidates with synchronous File.Exists calls and, on Windows, enumerates the Store Packages directory. A slow network path or large directory can stall the editor. Capture Application.platform on the editor thread, run the lookup on a worker, then check probeQueued before updating the status.
