Description

Asset searches previously loaded information for all assets before extracting the results, even when a page was specified. This change loads only the assets needed for the page, removing a cause of slow searches in large projects. Specifying a nonexistent search folder also returns an error instead of falling back to a project-wide search.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • Documentation update
  • Test update

Changes Made

  • Preserves the total search result count and date filters, and limits information retrieval and preview generation to the requested page.
  • Rejects page values of 0 or below and prevents integer overflow in calculations with large page numbers.
  • For an invalid search folder, the response explains the correct use of path and search_pattern.
  • Corrects the MCP search parameter descriptions and regenerates the auto-generated reference.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Unity version(s) tested: 6000.3.20f1 (macOS)
  • Package source used: local file: package
  • Resolved commit hash: not applicable (local package)
  • The response format for searches using valid folders is unchanged. Searches specifying invalid folders return an error.

Testing/Screenshots/Recordings

  • Python tests: 1,575 passed, 18 skipped
  • Unity EditMode tests: ManageAssetSearchTests 9 passed
  • Package import/compile check: Unity 6000.3.20f1
  • Regression test before the fix: Reproduced all 8 assets being loaded when retrieving a page of 2 results.
  • After the fix: Only 2 assets were loaded for the same search, while the total search result count remained 8.
  • Also verified date filters, the last page, out-of-range pages, and invalid inputs.

Documentation Updates

  • Changes the manage_asset search examples to the AssetDatabase query format.
  • Regenerates the reference documentation with tools/generate_docs_reference.py.

Fixes #1177

Additional Notes

The regression test checks the actual asset loading state in Unity. Windows, Linux, and the other Unity versions specified in CI are not verified.

Fork CI verification

Checked the GitHub Actions results for the same commit 21a71b1ba9505ce051ef6ef00918506da6f4e14b. The Python tests succeeded, as did the harness tests that run without Unity.

C# compilation also succeeded with Unity 6000.0.75f1. Runtime and Editor were compiled for each of the Windows, macOS, and Linux configurations.

The docs build succeeded. The generated-docs drift check also succeeded.

The E2E tests and the Unity Editor tests that require a license were skipped.

The upstream GitHub Actions are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run for the current commit. The CI successes above are results from runs on the fork that verified the same commit.

Review follow-up

Commit 700867524bd3e490a99d56f060f2476faa72dcd1 addresses the automated review finding that manage_asset(action="search") still ran a project-wide search when path was empty or missing. Search now returns an error for an empty, whitespace-only or missing path (same style as the existing invalid-folder error) before any asset is loaded. The server prompt examples and the unity_docs fallback hint now pass path="Assets", so the advice they give keeps working. A regression test covers "", whitespace and a missing path.

Verification for the latest commit:

  • Unity 6000.3.20f1 (macOS), EditMode, local run of ManageAssetSearchTests: 12 passed, 0 failed.
  • Python tests (uv run pytest tests/, local run): 1575 passed, 18 skipped.
  • Fork CI (haranishi/unity-mcp#5): the license-free C# compile check (win/osx/linux defines), the Python tests, the docs site build and the generated-docs drift check succeeded.
  • Not run: the Unity versions pinned by CI, and Windows/Linux. The fork has no Unity license, so its Unity Tests and E2E jobs are skipped, not passed. The upstream workflows for this PR are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Asset searches load only assets on the requested page while still reporting the total number of matches and the number returned on that page.
    • Searches return an error for invalid folders or nonpositive page values instead of searching the entire project when a folder is invalid.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how to specify asset searches and existing folders, use 1-based pagination, and limit search-result payloads.

📝 Walkthrough

Asset search now requires an existing folder and positive pagination values. It counts all matching assets but loads asset data only for the requested page. Tool guidance and documentation describe the search inputs. EditMode tests cover pagination, date filtering, and invalid inputs.

🟠 Major · Reject an empty search path before calling FindAssets. · ManageAsset.cs:649

MCPForUnity/Editor/Tools/ManageAsset.cs:649
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject an empty search path before calling FindAssets.

If path is empty or absent, this condition leaves folderScope null. The search then runs without the required folder scope and can process the entire project. Return an ErrorResponse for an empty path, as the new validation does for an invalid folder.

manage_asset search ran a project-wide search when `path` was empty or
missing, because the folder scope stayed null. The tool documents that
`path` must be an existing folder such as 'Assets', and this PR already
rejects a non-empty path that is not a folder, so reject an empty one the
same way, before any asset is loaded.

The server prompt examples and the unity_docs fallback hint called
manage_asset(action="search") without a path. Give them path="Assets" so
the advice they give keeps working.
