Description

The Dependencies window added optional packages without specifying a version, so Cinemachine 3 could be selected even for projects using Cinemachine 2. Adds a version field for each package and uses the same specification for individual installs and Install All. Includes existing packages in add requests only when a different version is explicitly specified.

Returns the actual version even when Cinemachine 2 is installed and explains that the built-in camera operations support the Cinemachine 3 API.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Breaking change
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring
  • Test update

Changes Made

  • Adds exact version specifications and a Change Version action for ProBuilder, Cinemachine, VFX Graph, and glTFast.
  • Leaves existing packages unchanged when the version field is blank or specifies the same version, and uses Unity's compatible version selection when the field is blank for a package that is not installed.
  • Shows format errors inline and validates all fields before starting installation in bulk operations.
  • Distinguishes the Cinemachine UPM version from built-in API support. For Cinemachine 2 ping, unsupported operations, and basic camera creation, advises keeping the existing version and using execute_code.
  • Updates the installation guide, tool descriptions, manifest, both skill copies, and generated reference.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Unity version tested: 6000.3.20f1, Test Framework 1.6.0.
  • Package source: The local package on this branch. Actual installation was verified with Cinemachine 2.10.5 from the Unity Registry.
  • Git package resolved commit: Not applicable.
  • Uses the existing Client.AddAndRemove and the PackageInfo API, which has existed since 2021.3.

Testing/Screenshots/Recordings

  • Python tests: 1,575 passed, 18 skipped.
  • Unity EditMode tests: 31 passed. Verified version specification, changes, preservation, recovery from invalid input, consistency between individual and bulk operations, and Cinemachine 2 guidance.
  • Unity PlayMode tests: Not run because the changes affect Editor dependency management and guidance.
  • Package import/compile check: Unity 6000.3.20f1.
  • Ran the Install process from the version field in the actual UI and confirmed the installation of Cinemachine 2.10.5 and use of the Cinemachine 2 API through execute_code.
  • Confirmed preservation of the specified version after restarting, display at widths of 500, 768, and 1000, and recovery from invalid input.
  • Confirmed the Docusaurus build, generated-docs check, and consistency between both skill copies.
  • The 4 required Unity versions were skipped in the matrix check because they were not installed locally. Execution on these versions was not verified.

Documentation Updates

  • I have modified tool descriptions.
  • Updated according to tools/UPDATE_DOCS_PROMPT.md.
  • Generated changes reviewed.

Fixes #1261

Additional Notes

Does not add a native camera adapter for Cinemachine 2. The built-in virtual camera operations use the Cinemachine 3 API, and the guidance for Cinemachine 2 directs users to the existing API and execute_code. Unity Package Manager dependency resolution continues to apply.

Fork CI verification

Checked the GitHub Actions results for the same commit f3f24f41a76c466b2cc2bd0444f5a517c5c5111e. The Python tests succeeded, as did the harness tests that run without Unity.

C# compilation also succeeded with Unity 6000.0.75f1. Runtime and Editor were compiled for each of the Windows, macOS, and Linux configurations.

The docs build succeeded. The generated-docs drift check also succeeded.

The E2E tests and the Unity Editor tests that require a license were skipped.

The upstream GitHub Actions are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run for the current commit. The CI successes above are results from runs on the fork that verified the same commit.

Review follow-up

Commit df34b52416834195fb8c201ba2d60eb37173971d addresses the automated review finding that changing one package left Install All and the other rows enabled, so a second Package Manager request could be submitted while the first was pending. A shared in-flight flag is set when a request is submitted and cleared on every completion path; a second submission is rejected, and the whole dependencies section is disabled while a request is pending. Install All now runs its Roslyn step inside the guarded block so a failure re-enables the controls. New tests cover the guard and the disabled state.

Verification for the latest commit:

  • Unity 6000.3.20f1 (macOS), EditMode, local run of OptionalDependencyVersionTests, CinemachineVersionTests: 30 passed, 0 failed, 4 skipped (they need an isolated project with Cinemachine 2 installed).
  • Fork CI (haranishi/unity-mcp#9): the license-free C# compile check (win/osx/linux defines), the Python tests, the docs site build and the generated-docs drift check succeeded.
  • Not run: the Unity versions pinned by CI, and Windows/Linux. The fork has no Unity license, so its Unity Tests and E2E jobs are skipped, not passed. The upstream workflows for this PR are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Select exact versions of optional Unity packages in the Dependencies window. Unchanged installed packages are preserved, while missing packages use the latest compatible version when no version is specified.
    • Check Cinemachine installation, package version, and native Cinemachine 3 API support with manage_camera’s ping.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Cinemachine 2 projects are distinguished from projects that support native Cinemachine 3 camera actions, with guidance to use the installed version’s API.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for managing optional package versions and using Cinemachine across versions.

📝 Walkthrough

The Dependencies window now supports exact versions for optional UPM packages and preserves unchanged installations. Camera tools distinguish Cinemachine installation from support for the Cinemachine 3 API and report version and capability information with guidance for Cinemachine 2 projects.

Changing one package left the other controls enabled, so Install All (or
another row) could submit a second Client.AddAndRemove while the first was
pending. Unity requires these requests to run in sequence.

Add a shared in-flight flag that is set when a request is submitted and cleared
on every completion path, reject a second submission, and disable the whole
dependencies section while a request is pending. Install All now runs its
Roslyn step inside the guarded block so a failure re-enables the controls.
