Description

Fixes an issue where TCP connection checks, executable discovery, uv validation, and client configuration reads block the Editor main thread when the MCP for Unity window regains focus. The refresh process retrieves the required settings on the main thread, performs I/O on a worker, and then updates the display.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Test update

Changes Made

  • Makes connection checks, path validation, client status checks, and command display updates asynchronous on focus and during periodic refreshes.
  • Uses caching and shared in-flight requests to reduce repeated execution of the same checks.
  • Prevents stale results from overwriting the display or connection status after settings changes, disconnection, a new connection session, or window closure. Counts a connection failure once per new check result.
  • Uses copies of settings for status checks to prevent focus refreshes from rewriting client configuration files.
  • Preserves the existing IPathResolverService and separates worker-side path resolution into an optional IWindowPathResolver.
  • Regression tests cover slow executables and TCP checks, cache expiration, settings changes, session changes, disposed windows, and read-only refreshes for each client.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Unity version(s) tested: 6000.3.20f1, Unity Test Framework 1.6.0.
  • Package source used (#beta, #main, tag, branch, or file:): Verified this branch, created from beta, through a file: reference in a separate test project.
  • Resolved commit hash from Packages/packages-lock.json (if using a Git package URL): Not applicable (file: reference). The base is 142ea0a.

Testing/Screenshots/Recordings

  • Python tests (cd Server && uv run --extra dev pytest -q tests): 1,575 passed, 18 skipped.
  • Unity EditMode tests: 96 related tests for the window, path resolution, client configuration, and server commands passed.
  • Unity PlayMode tests
  • Package import/compile check
  • Not applicable (explain why in Additional Notes)

Before the fix, validating a slow executable took approximately 505ms, and the response-time regression test failed. After the fix, the same test passed. Also verified 12 focus refreshes in the actual window using an executable that takes 1 second; the maximum refresh call duration was approximately 0.38ms. Confirmed that Editor updates continued, configuration files remained unchanged, the verification settings were restored, and the display worked at widths of 500, 768, and 1000.

Ran bash tools/check-unity-versions.sh. The specified versions 2021.3.45f2, 2022.3.62f1, 6000.0.75f1, and 6000.4.8f1 were all skipped because they were not installed.

Additional Notes

Verification on an actual machine running Windows 11, the reported environment, has not been performed. The native verification performed used the Unity version listed above on macOS and covered Editor operations. The change adds no Unity-version-specific code paths and does not change any MCP tools.

Fork CI verification

Checked the GitHub Actions results for the same commit b9345fa8dbd890338d9ffd0a83e87af6a7fa78ea. The Python tests succeeded, as did the harness tests that run without Unity.

C# compilation also succeeded with Unity 6000.0.75f1. Runtime and Editor were compiled for each of the Windows, macOS, and Linux configurations.

The E2E tests and the Unity Editor tests that require a license were skipped.

The upstream GitHub Actions are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run for the current commit. The CI successes above are results from runs on the fork that verified the same commit.

Review follow-up

Commits e4148b625eca48b41d8d71d17539c7f65ca9a48a and 30b5693cb4e45c7d8714b58cc95e62749126d31b address the automated review finding that a refresh whose work throws left the selected client on "Checking..." with Copy JSON disabled. EditorAsyncRefresh.Request takes an optional failure callback, invoked only for a request that is still current; the client section uses it to show the Error state. Because the path, JSON and steps fields still described the previously shown client, they are cleared and Copy JSON stays disabled. New tests cover a faulted request, a superseded request, success, and a throwing failure handler. A second commit also clears the earlier Claude path and project-directory context on every current failure, so a later failure never shows settings from an earlier success.

Verification for the latest commit:

  • Unity 6000.3.20f1 (macOS), EditMode, local run of the MCPForUnityTests.Editor.Windows namespace (including EditorAsyncRefreshTests and WindowFocusRefreshTests), PathResolverClaudeCliTests, CodexConfigHelperTests, ClientConfigFormatTests, ServerCommandBuilderTests: 102 passed, 0 failed.
  • Fork CI (haranishi/unity-mcp#10): the license-free C# compile check (win/osx/linux defines) succeeded.
  • Not run: the Unity versions pinned by CI, and Windows/Linux. The fork has no Unity license, so its Unity Tests and E2E jobs are skipped, not passed. The upstream workflows for this PR are waiting for a maintainer to approve the run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Editor status, connection checks, and path information now refresh asynchronously, helping the interface remain responsive during slower checks.
    • Refreshes use captured settings and avoid displaying results that have become outdated.
    • Generated client and server configuration reflects the selected transport, executable paths, and connection settings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved transport matching and project-directory override handling in client configuration and connection warnings.

📝 Walkthrough

The editor window captures configuration and path inputs, resolves refresh work asynchronously, and applies keyed results to client, advanced, and connection sections. Client configurators and command builders can consume captured values. Stale or detached refresh results are discarded.

WindowRefreshContext captures editor settings and resolves package, deployment, and executable data. Path resolution returns cached path results. McpClient can be copied for status refreshes.

…resh throws

EditorAsyncRefresh only logged a warning when the refresh work threw, so the
selected client stayed on "Checking..." with Copy JSON disabled.

Add an optional failure callback, called only for a request that is still
current, and use it to put the selected client into the Error state. The path,
JSON and steps fields still described the previously shown client, so clear
them and keep Copy JSON disabled.

After a refresh succeeded and a later one failed, displayedContext still held
the earlier result, so the Claude path, the project directory and the project
directory override flag kept showing settings that may no longer apply next to
the Error status. Clear the context and show "Unavailable" on every current
failure.
