feat(clients): native DSH bundle install for DeepSeek Harness (builds on #1453) - #1471
sobhanb-eth wants to merge 11 commits into
Conversation
Adds a DeepSeek Harness configurator so "Configure All Detected Clients" covers DSH the way it already covers Cursor, Codex, Claude Code and Pi. DeepSeek Harness differs from every other JSON/TOML client here in one way that had to be handled rather than assumed: `dsh` consumes MCP servers through its `@deepseek-ai/dsh-mcp-client` plugin, configured as Cordis rows in a YAML patch layer -- `$DSH_HOME/cordis.patch.yml` (override wins, then the env var, then `~/.dsh`) -- not a JSON/TOML config file. The package has no YAML parser, and real patch files may contain features YAML parsers choke on (`!!js` JS-expression tags, anchors) plus unrelated server rows that must never be corrupted. All patch-file surgery therefore lives in `DshConfigHelper`, which manages exactly one marker-fenced block: upsert replaces only the fenced region, status parses only its known row shape, and Unregister removes only the fenced region. Detection is fail-closed in both directions: DSH counts as installed only once it has run at least once (its home directory exists), so a bare `~/.dsh` from another tool cannot read as "detected", and a DSH user who has not configured any MCP server yet is still reported. Tests cover the block surgery (HTTP/stdio row shapes, round-trip parsing, idempotent upsert, foreign patches preserved byte-for-byte, register-then- unregister leaves user content intact) and the configurator contract (config path, status with and without auto-rewrite). Docs: capability matrix row, the terminal-client list, and the per-client DSH section in the configurators guide. Also ignore `.compile-out/`, the scratch output of tools/compile-check.sh.
Addresses the CodeRabbit review on PR CoplayDev#1453: - DshConfiguratorTests fed "it''s-a-key" (two literal apostrophes) into BuildUnityMcpBlock. Quote doubled them into four, and Unquote returned the doubled value, so the assertion against "it''s-a-key" failed. The round-trip logic was correct; only the test input was wrong. Pass the unescaped value instead. - Fix the garbled sentence ("may contain features one (e.g.") in the DSH section of website/docs/guides/client-configurators.md.
…cs for bundle flow - RunDshCommand resolves the dsh launcher via DSH_CLI override then PATH+PATHEXT (dsh.cmd/dsh.bat/dsh.exe/dsh) and routes .cmd/.bat shims through cmd.exe /s /c; Process with UseShellExecute=false cannot find dsh.cmd by bare name, so Configure would have failed on every Windows install. - Configure fails fast when the target DSH profile does not exist (with the available profiles listed), because 'dsh plugin add' silently initializes a missing profile as a bare, unusable one. - Commit .meta for the new sources per repo convention. - Docs: describe the native bundle flow (dsh plugin add / remove, profile-scoped) instead of the root home patch.
Matches DSH's own bundle template and the behavior proven in the live end-to-end run: mount failures surface as visible entry activation errors instead of silently degrading.
PathsEqual runs Path.GetFullPath, which throws on the characters package specs contain ('>'), and its catch returns false for identical strings — so the stdio status check could never match a PyPI spec and always reported IncorrectPath (other clients mask this with auto-rewrite). Add PackageSourcesEqual: specs compare as text, path-like sources as normalized paths. Adds the stdio status tests the suite was missing (all previous status tests used HTTP).

…le bundles, docs - RunDshCommand drains stdout/stderr concurrently (ReadToEndAsync started before the timed wait). Sequential blocking reads could deadlock when the child filled the other pipe, and a hung dsh would freeze the editor because the timeout sat after the reads. - Bundle paths are profile-qualified (\/bundles/<profile>/unity-mcp/): dsh plugin add symlinks the bundle directory into the profile, so a shared path let one profile's Unregister dangle another's link. Profile names are validated against path traversal. Regression tests cover cross-profile isolation. - Docs: Auto-config cell is 'no (manual Configure)' per SupportsAutoConfigure => false; bundle paths updated. - Docstrings: one-line summaries for the 44 diff functions that lacked them.

…xe metacharacters - Unregister now checks the dsh plugin remove result: on failure it keeps the bundle (the profile still links the directory; deleting it would dangle the symlink) and reports the manual command. When the profile does not list the bundle, leftover files are deleted without invoking the CLI. - Every process argument is double-quoted with standard CommandLineToArgvW escaping: cmd.exe metacharacters (& | < > ^) are literal inside quotes, so names like R&D and home paths containing ampersands work. Percent cannot be escaped on a cmd /c command line (%% stays literal while %VAR% expands even inside quotes), so profile names reject percent and double-quote outright.

DSH's plugin-manager toggle keeps the dependency installed while dropping the entry from dsh.profile.bundles. Unregister skipped dsh plugin remove in that state and deleted the directory the dependency links. Unregister now runs the CLI when the profile declares the bundle in either place and only skips it for bare leftover files. Status checks keep the strict enabled look: a disabled bundle mounts no tools. Regression test: Unregister_DisabledButInstalled_StillRunsRemove.

Is it possible to shrink this and let it work as a manual configuration like the CherryStudioConfigurator we had? Also no test is needed for such project with 900~ lines. I would love to add Deepseek Harness, but the current size seems like a maintenance mess. |
|
Hey, fair point. It grew way past what I expected and I get the maintenance concern. Here's what's in there right now. The configurator writes a small bundle into the dsh home folder and installs it with dsh plugin add. There's a Configure button and an Unregister button, and the window shows whether it's set up and whether the config still matches the transport you picked. I tested the whole thing by hand. The bundle shows up in the DSH plugin manager with the working toggle and the tools show up as mcp__unityMCP__*, so the native plugin side works. If we go the CherryStudio route, we lose the two buttons and the status dot. You'd copy two commands from the manual snippet and paste them into a terminal instead. What stays the same is everything at runtime. Same bundle, same plugin manager UI with the enable toggle, same tools. DSH already owns the install and remove lifecycle anyway, so the buttons were kind of a second copy of that living in Unity. That gets us to around 200 lines total and all the process execution code goes away. That's where every bug we found lived, so cutting it removes the whole problem area. There's one middle ground I'm curious about. The status check could stay read only. It would just look at the profile file and tell you whether the bundle is installed. No writes, no running commands, just a truthful status in the window. Around 20 lines. What's your preference? Fully manual like CherryStudio with no status at all, or is the read only status fine? And do you want the tests gone completely or would two or three tiny ones for the snippet be okay? I'd rather match what the repo prefers before I cut it down. |
Lets trim it down to 200 lines if thats possible, also lets get the tests gone, keeping it under similar fashion with our other configurators. |
Per review direction, keep it in the same fashion as the other manual configurators and under roughly 200 lines, with the tests gone. The class now only renders the manual snippet (the two bundle files plus the quoted dsh plugin add and remove commands). DSH's plugin manager owns the install, enable/disable, and removal lifecycle from there. This drops the helper and test files from the earlier iterations on this branch, including the process execution and bundle management code.
|
Done, trimmed it down like you asked. The configurator is 187 lines now and the whole diff against beta lands around 220 including docs and the meta file. Tests are gone too. It works the same way CherryStudio does now. The class just renders the snippet, which carries the two bundle files and the quoted dsh plugin add and remove commands. Install, enable and disable, removal, all of that lives in DSH's plugin manager where it belongs. The window shows the copy and paste text and that is it. So the trade is two terminal commands instead of a button. Same bundle either way, same plugin in DSH's plugin manager with the toggle, same tools after a restart. Compile check is green again on all three platforms. Let me know if you want it even smaller or if this shape works. |

deepseek-harness dsh CLI plugin --profile desktop reserved Electron profile README
💡 Result:
The **official README reserves `desktop` for Electron**—it isn’t a normal profile you can boot or manage with an npm-installed `dsh` CLI. The CLI README says it rejects boot, config-dump, and plugin-management requests for that profile. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/apps/cli/README.md))
For the official Desktop app, launch it once to initialize its profile, fully quit, then use the **Desktop-installed** `dsh` command to manage plugins:
```sh
dsh plugin --profile desktop add <package>
```
Reopen Desktop to activate the change. The README says the npm-installed CLI cannot mutate the Electron-owned profile. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/apps/desktop/README.md))
If you’re trying to create an ordinary CLI profile, choose another name; `desktop` is specifically reserved for Electron. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/apps/cli/README.md))

official DeepSeek Harness CLI README DSH_PROFILE desktop Electron plugin management profile
💡 Result:
The official repository describes **DSH profiles** as named configurations under `$DSH_HOME/profiles`; plugins are installed into a profile and listed in its ordered `dsh.profile.bundles` manifest. The CLI manages them with `dsh plugin --profile <name> add|remove …`. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/docs/cli-help.md))
For **Electron Desktop**, the reserved `desktop` profile is owned exclusively by the app. To manage its plugins from a terminal:
1. Launch Desktop once to initialize the profile, then fully quit it.
2. Use Desktop’s bundled `dsh` command: `dsh plugin --profile desktop add <package>` (or `list` / `remove`).
3. Reopen Desktop to apply changes.
The README says the regular CLI cannot boot or modify this Desktop-owned profile; use the Desktop-installed command, not an npm-installed `dsh`. Desktop’s in-app plugin management is through the app’s Plugins page—not a separate Electron plugin-management IPC. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/apps/desktop/README.md))
**`DSH_PROFILE` isn’t established as the profile-selection variable** in these README/help references; they document the `--profile` flag instead. The sources also don’t establish whether another version supports `DSH_PROFILE`. ([github.com](https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness/blob/master/docs/cli-help.md))

Do not use desktop as the ordinary CLI default.
When DSH_PROFILE is unset, ProfileName() selects desktop. The generated dsh plugin --profile desktop add ... command then targets the Electron-owned profile, which the regular npm-installed DSH CLI cannot modify.
The current default appears intentional for Desktop, but the snippet must either require a documented CLI profile or explain that desktop requires the Desktop-installed dsh command after Desktop is closed.

The desktop profile is Electron-owned. Verified against the Desktop-installed dsh (0.2.1-rc.2): dsh plugin add/remove/ls on the desktop profile work (the documented Desktop flow), while --dump-config and boot are rejected with "managed exclusively by the Electron application". The snippet and steps now say to quit DeepSeek Harness before running the commands and to pick another profile name when using a standalone npm dsh.
|
Good catch on the reserved profile, but the plugin-management half of the finding doesn't hold for the setup this targets. I verified against the Desktop-installed
So the CLI only guards boot/config-dump. The That said, two parts of the finding were right and worth 3 comment lines:
Fixed accordingly: the snippet header and the install step now say quit DeepSeek Harness first, reopen after, and use another profile name with a standalone dsh. No machinery added. Compile check green for win/osx/linux. |
What this PR does
Adds a DeepSeek Harness configurator in the same manual fashion as the other UI-driven clients (like
CherryStudioConfigurator). The Manual Configuration snippet renders everything needed to mount Unity MCP in DSH as a configuration-only bundle: the two bundle files (package.json+cordis.patch.yml) and thedsh plugin add/dsh plugin removecommands. After a DSH reload the tools surface asmcp__unityMCP__<tool>. DSH's own plugin manager owns enable/disable and removal from there.Per review feedback the implementation is trimmed to the manual configurator shape: no process execution, no bundle management code, no tests. This branch started from PR #1453 by @VortDyn and keeps his commits in the history. His investigation of the Cordis patch row shape is what the snippet renders today. After review feedback the implementation settled on the manual shape, so the final diff is much smaller than the earlier iterations here.
