Description

Replaces the blanket File.Delete / Directory.Delete block with a
project-relative root allowlist, so an agent can clean regenerable folders
(Builds/, Temp/, ...) without disabling safety_checks or shelling out.

This is still a guardrail, not a sandbox: execute_code compiles arbitrary C#,
so reflection, P/Invoke or a shell can bypass any source-text check. The change
only removes false positives for the common case and makes the rejection
message actionable.

Fixes #1438

Type of Change

  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)

Changes Made

  • New DeletePathPolicy: path normalization (rejects UNC/device paths,
drive-relative paths, alternate data streams, ..), strict root-boundary
    checks, and a source scanner for File.Delete / Directory.Delete.
  • New ExecuteCodePrefs: allowlist stored in EditorPrefs, never in tool
arguments. Present-but-empty value = deny every delete (explicit lockdown).
  • ExecuteCode: file-delete calls now go through the policy; all other
patterns (Process.Start, infinite loops, AssetDatabase deletion, ...) stay
    blocked.
  • Docs reference regenerated from the updated Python tool description.
  • EditMode tests: 25 policy/scanner cases + 2 end-to-end tool cases (27 total).

Defaults

Builds, Temp, Logs, obj, Library/Bee, Library/Artifacts.

Library/ is intentionally NOT allowed wholesale (the issue suggested it):
recursively deleting it mid-session also removes PackageCache /
ScriptAssemblies and breaks the running Editor. Library/Bee and
Library/Artifacts cover the regenerable caches. Easy to change if maintainers
prefer the broader default.

Hard rules (not configurable)

  • Assets/ is never deletable.
  • Anything outside the project root is never deletable.
  • The allowed root itself cannot be deleted (Directory.Delete("Builds", true)
is rejected; only paths strictly below it are allowed).
  • Only a single string literal is accepted; variables, interpolation,
concatenation, using static System.IO.File and FileInfo/DirectoryInfo
construction are rejected because their runtime path cannot be validated.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Unity version(s) tested: 2022.3.62f3 — EditMode suite
(ExecuteCodeTests 32/32, DeletePathPolicyTests 27/27) plus a live MCP
round-trip in the same Editor (allowed / blocked / lockdown /
    safety_checks=false).
Not run locally on 2021.3 or 6000.x; CI's license-free compile check covers
    compilation across the matrix.
  • Package source used (#beta, #main, tag, branch, or file:): local
    file: package — TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Packages/manifest.json points
    at file:../../../MCPForUnity on branch
    feat/execute-code-delete-allowlist.
  • Resolved commit hash from Packages/packages-lock.json (if using a Git
package URL): N/A — local file package.

Testing

  • Python tests — cd Server && uv run pytest tests/ -v → 1591 passed, 3 skipped
  • Unity EditMode tests — ExecuteCodeTests 32/32, DeletePathPolicyTests 27/27 (Unity 2022.3.62f3)
  • Manual MCP round-trip — allowed / blocked / lockdown / safety_checks=false all behave as described
  • Unity PlayMode tests — not applicable
  • Package import/compile check — covered by CI

Additional Notes

Known limitation, also documented in the code: this is a source-text guardrail.
typeof(File).GetMethod("Delete").Invoke(...), P/Invoke, or a child process
still bypass it, exactly as they bypassed the previous pattern block. The
allowlist does not make execute_code a sandbox.

The 27 new EditMode tests live in
TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Security/ and passed on
Unity 2022.3.62f3. The CI matrix (2021.3 / 2022.3 / 6000.0 / 6000.4) still
needs a maintainer-triggered run — fork PRs skip the Editor legs by design.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • execute_code can delete files or directories only when the path is a simple string literal within an allowed project folder. By default, allowed folders include Builds, Temp, Logs, obj, Library/Bee, and Library/Artifacts.
    • Delete access can be configured; an explicitly empty allowlist blocks all deletions. The project’s Assets folder and paths outside the project remain blocked.
  • Documentation
    • Updated execute_code guidance to describe the delete-path restrictions and configurable allowlist.

📝 Walkthrough

execute_code now checks delete calls against configured project-relative roots when safety checks are enabled. The change adds preference handling, path and source validation, tests, and updated tool descriptions.

Changes: Delete Path Allowlist

Layer / File(s) Summary
Delete-root configuration and path policy
MCPForUnity/Editor/Constants/EditorPrefKeys.cs, MCPForUnity/Editor/Helpers/ExecuteCodePrefs.cs, MCPForUnity/Editor/Security/DeletePathPolicy.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Security/*
Adds a preference for semicolon-separated delete roots. An unset preference uses the default roots; a configured empty value denies all deletes. The policy rejects paths outside the project, paths in Assets, and paths that are not strictly below an allowed root. Tests cover path boundaries and preference normalization.
Delete-call source validation
MCPForUnity/Editor/Security/DeletePathPolicy.cs, MCPForUnity/Editor/Tools/ExecuteCode.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Security/DeletePathPolicyTests.cs
The source check accepts supported string-literal delete paths that pass the policy. It rejects unsupported argument forms and specified I/O patterns. When safety checks are enabled, ExecuteCode runs the check and returns an error for a violation.
Execution coverage and tool descriptions
TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Security/DeletePathPolicyTests.cs, Server/src/services/tools/execute_code.py, website/docs/reference/tools/scripting_ext/execute_code.md
End-to-end tests cover a delete under Temp, a blocked delete targeting Assets, and a blocked current-directory change. The server and website descriptions document the delete-path rules and default roots.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ed057

The new delete allowlist works for ordinary snippets, but a snippet that first creates a directory link inside an allowed folder such as Temp can still delete files under Assets. This is within the stated "guardrail, not sandbox" limits, so the PR is mergeable. Maintainers may want a follow-up that rejects link creation or resolves links before allowing a delete.

Explanation

Issue #1438 requests safer destructive-file handling for execute_code. DeletePathPolicy allows only strict descendants of project-relative roots, blocks Assets and paths outside the project, rejects non-literal paths, and returns actionable errors. ExecuteCodePrefs stores the roots in EditorPrefs and preserves explicit empty-value lockdown. ExecuteCode applies the policy while retaining other blocked patterns. The defaults include Builds and Temp plus restricted Library cache roots, and the tests cover allow and deny cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1438. DeletePathPolicy, ExecuteCodePrefs, ExecuteCode integration, documentation, and tests all support the requested delete allowlist and safety behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Block working-directory changes when safety checks are enabled.

CheckSource validates the relative literal before CompileAndExecute. The wrapper then executes user code in the same process, and _blockedPatterns does not reject Directory.SetCurrentDirectory or Environment.CurrentDirectory. A snippet can change the working directory to Application.dataPath and then call File.Delete("Builds/file"). The policy validates the project-root Builds/file, but the runtime call targets Assets/Builds/file.
