fix(operator): keep a package's own interrupt and close the config-update completion gaps - #887
Part of #776, defect 1 (and the operator side of defect 3).
A config change records its keys for the whole NodeWright. With keys present, NodeState.HasInterrupt only consulted the configInterrupts entries matching them, so a package whose own interrupt never ran on a node (for example a reboot that was failing) completed at config without it and the node was uncordoned. A node that newly matched the selector, or was reset after a config cycle, hit the same thing through the stale keys.
Change
Option A from the issue, tracked per node and package.
PackageStatus.InterruptPending (interruptPending): set at apply or upgrade for a package that declares its own interrupt, cleared once the interrupt completes (interrupt/complete, including a skipped interrupt promoted to complete) or the package reaches post-interrupt, carried by Upsert otherwise. Clearing at interrupt/complete matters: a config reset of a node at that state must not run the package's own interrupt, such as a reboot, a second time. The wrapper's Upsert supplies whether the package declares one, so packages without an interrupt never get the flag and their node annotations are unchanged.
HasInterrupt: with config keys recorded, true when a configInterrupts entry matches or the package's own interrupt is still owed on this node. With no keys it is unchanged.
fudgeInterruptWithPriority takes a per-node owesOwn and adds the package's own interrupt to the matching ones, so the existing priority picks the winner (a reboot beats a service restart).
package rerun --stage and update-state set the flag on apply/upgrade only for a package that declares an interrupt, and clear it on post-interrupt (and on interrupt/complete for update-state).
The per-node choice goes through a small nodeInterrupt helper so a spec can cover the node.OwesOwnInterrupt wiring.
CRD field in config/crd and chart/templates (both groups), legacy conversion, docs.
No migration shim. The issue asked for one so existing entries read as complete. The flag is stored inverted (pending, not complete), so an entry written before the field existed already reads as "not owed" and nothing re-runs on upgrade. The only gap is a node mid-rollout at upgrade time with keys already recorded, which keeps today's behavior.
NodeState: flag set, carried and cleared across stages (including interrupt/complete and a promoted skipped interrupt); owed vs settled; matched configInterrupts still run after the own one ran; unchanged with no keys
wrapper Upsert flags only a package with its own interrupt
fudgeInterruptWithPriority adds the own interrupt only where owed; a spec on a real wrapped node through nodeInterrupt fails if node.OwesOwnInterrupt is replaced with nil
package rerun and update-state flag handling, including packages without an interrupt
conversion fixture covers the new field
mock regenerated with make generate-mocks (only SkyhookNode.go changed)
From operator/: make lint; go test ./api/... ./cmd/... ./internal/wrapper/... ./internal/controller/... (envtest 1.34.1). CI ran the chainsaw e2e suites on the earlier commits and passed.
These were three separate PRs. They are combined here to stay within the repository's open-PR limit; the branches were independent and merged without conflicts.
In-flight config completion (was #888, follow-up to #788)
A config-update reset puts a node's entry back at (config, in_progress). That is indistinguishable from the run an older config Job did, so if that Job's completion was still in flight (or its Job object was still unrecorded) JobReconciler recorded it as the new run's. The node then finished on the old ConfigMap, and the ConfigMap diff was already consumed, so nothing retried. Package pods read each key once at start (subPath mounts), so nothing corrects it afterwards.
Change
ApplyPackage stamps a config-stage Job with nodewright.nvidia.com/config-hash: a hash of the live ConfigMap data the pod will mount (sorted keys, length-prefixed).
JobReconciler.handleCompleteJob compares the stamp with the live ConfigMap before recording. On a mismatch it foreground-deletes the Job instead, and the stage is re-created from the entry against the current data.
Jobs without the stamp (created by an older operator) and Jobs whose ConfigMap is gone record exactly as before, so there is no behavior change on upgrade.
The package ConfigMap name and the uncached-reader fallback are shared helpers (packageConfigMapName, uncachedReader) used by the Job builder, the stamp and the check, so the check cannot drift off the volume name.
The Jobs design doc's retention rules list the config-hash check and the reset-time deletion as the exceptions to "unprocessed finished Jobs are never deleted".
Why a content hash
metadata.generation is already a Job label, but any spec edit bumps it, so it cannot separate "config data changed" from an unrelated edit. The hash is taken from the live ConfigMap, not the spec: the pod mounts the live one, and the spec can be ahead of it while the gate is closed (comparing against the spec would reject valid completions until the gate opens).
Residual window
HandleConfigUpdates saves the reset node state before it updates the ConfigMap, and a node already at (config, in_progress) is unchanged by that reset, so nothing is written for it. A completion JobReconciler recorded after the pass read the node and before the ConfigMap landed would stand on the old data: the stamp matched when it was recorded, and the diff is then consumed.
Once the ConfigMap is replaced, restartConfigStage rewrites each reset node's entry to (config, in_progress) from a fresh (uncached) read, under the optimistic lock. Anything recorded before that is overwritten, and anything after fails the hash check, so no completion on the old data survives. An entry that is gone or at uninstall/apply/upgrade is left alone. Reordering the two writes would risk losing the diff if the node save failed, so the order stays. If the rewrite itself errors, the reconcile errors and retries, but the diff is already consumed, so that failure leaves only the narrow window described above.
New specs: a Job on replaced data is not recorded and is deleted (fails without the guard); matching data records; no stamp records; missing ConfigMap records; hash is order-independent with no key/value bleed; ApplyPackage stamps the Job.
Added: restartConfigStage rewrites an entry a concurrent writer moved on and leaves entries at apply/upgrade/uninstall or already at config in progress alone; the config-hash check and the stamp each read the ConfigMap from a separate live client while the cache still holds the old one.
HandleConfigUpdates clears executors on every node it resets (deleteConfigUpdateExecutors), so the config stage re-runs on the new ConfigMap. No spec covered that wiring: dropping or moving the call would let a reset node finish on a Job still running the old data without failing a test.
Change
One envtest spec next to the other HandleConfigUpdates ones. It seeds an unfinished config Job on each of three nodes:
an erroring node at config, which opens the gate and is reset;
a node at interrupt (in progress), which is reset without erroring, so cleanup cannot depend on the gate-opening node;
a node still at apply, which the reset leaves alone.
It runs HandleConfigUpdates and asserts the first two Jobs are deleted and the third is kept. envtest runs no garbage collector, so a foreground delete shows as a deletionTimestamp.
Checked it fails when the deleteConfigUpdateExecutors call is removed.
Tested locally (from operator/)
make vet lint
go test ./internal/controller/ (the whole package, envtest 1.34.1)
This replaces #878 (same branch, now pushed to NVIDIA/nodewright so CI runs without fork approval). The review there is addressed and the replies are on #878:
ayuskauskas: flag now cleared at (interrupt, complete), in ProgressSkipped and in update-state; mock regenerated with make generate-mocks.
lockwobr: nodeInterrupt helper plus a real-node spec for node.OwesOwnInterrupt, and rerun/update-state flag specs; user-guide sentence qualified.
CodeRabbit: rerun and update-state set the flag only for packages with an interrupt, and rerun --stage post-interrupt clears it.
The threads there are left open for the reviewers to resolve.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds an optional interruptPending status field to package entries and tracks whether a package still owes its own interrupt. Controller interrupt selection considers that state alongside matching config interrupts. Config updates reset eligible node entries and unfinished config Jobs. Config-stage Jobs are stamped with a ConfigMap data hash and are deleted when live data no longer matches. CLI rerun and update-state operations set or clear the flag by stage. CRD schemas, tests, and documentation are updated.
A config stage could be accepted after running with stale data. Resolve or explicitly accept that risk before merging, and clarify the documented fallback.

LGTM. Re-checked at this head:
My #878 threads are fixed. A node taken through apply, interrupt complete and a config reset now finishes at config with no interrupt, and the #776 case (reboot erroring at interrupt, then a config change) still reboots. Removing the new clear at (interrupt, complete) brings the second reboot back. The mock matches mockery v3.8.1 apart from what make fmt adds.
The config-hash part from #888 holds up. A config Job stamped with the old data is dropped once the ConfigMap changes, and the stage re-runs and records on the new data. Unstamped Jobs from an older operator and an A→B→A edit still record, and a terminating stale Job only delays the re-create.
A config change records its keys for the whole NodeWright, and with keys
present HasInterrupt consulted only the configInterrupts matching them. A
package whose own interrupt never ran on a node (for example a reboot that
was failing) then completed at config without it and the node was
uncordoned, or a newly selected node or a node reset after a config cycle
skipped it for the same reason.
Track the owed interrupt per node and package in PackageStatus
(interruptPending): set at apply or upgrade for a package that declares an
interrupt, cleared at post-interrupt. While set, HasInterrupt and the
interrupt merge add the package's own interrupt to the matching
configInterrupts, and the existing priority picks the winner. Entries
written before the field existed read as not pending, so no migration is
needed and an upgrade does not re-run anything. package rerun and
update-state set or clear the flag when they write apply, upgrade or
post-interrupt.

…over the controller wiring
A config reset at (interrupt, complete) kept the flag, so the package's own
interrupt (a reboot, say) ran a second time on a node that had just run it.
Clear the flag at (interrupt, complete), in ProgressSkipped, and in
update-state. Pick the per-node interrupt through nodeInterrupt so a spec can
cover node.OwesOwnInterrupt, regenerate the SkyhookNode mock with mockery, and
qualify the user-guide sentence that said a config change never retries the
interrupt.

… the ConfigMap lookups
Rewrite the package's node entry to config, in progress from a fresh read once
the ConfigMap is replaced, so a completion recorded after the pass read the
node cannot stand on the old data. Share the ConfigMap name and reader
fallback between the Job builder, the stamp and the check, pin the uncached
reads with specs that split the cached and live clients, and bring the design
doc's Job-retention rules in line.

HandleConfigUpdates calls deleteConfigUpdateExecutors for every node it
resets, but no spec exercised that wiring: dropping or moving the call would
let a reset node finish on a Job still running the old ConfigMap without
failing a test. Seed an unfinished config Job on a reset node and on a node
the reset leaves alone, and assert only the first is cleared.

Re-checked at 4a1af30. The change since my last pass, the hash check inside the patch retry, holds up. I left three comments inline: a gap in the window restartConfigStage closes, a CLI case the flag misses, and a docs gap on what a configMap change does to running Jobs.
A (config, complete) recorded just before the ConfigMap update may not be in
the cache yet. Read from it, the entry looks like (config, in_progress), so no
patch is sent, no conflict forces the uncached retry, and the old-data
completion stands.

Re-checked at 0bcfa80. The three follow-ups hold: restartConfigStage goes through patchNodeStateUncached, so its first read is from the apiserver; rerun --stage interrupt and update-state to an unfinished interrupt set interruptPending only for a package that declares one; and the configMap docs now say the reset spans every node at those stages or complete. On the flag itself: GetConfigInterrupts builds a fresh map per call, so adding an owed interrupt there cannot leak to another node, and the inverted storage makes pre-existing entries read as settled without a shim. Build, vet and the CLI and wrapper specs pass locally; the API and controller suites need envtest, which CI ran green at this head.
