fix: report safe install error codes during --fix - #1436
Keep the last 8 KiB of stdout and stderr separately during --fix.
Report allowed npm and pnpm codes from failed install commands.
Read bracketed pnpm 11 codes, including [ERR_PNPM_FETCH_404].
Report the last known Yarn failure code. Ignore peer warnings and informational codes.
Report ENOTFOUND, ECONNREFUSED, and ETIMEDOUT from npm errors or Node spawn errors.
Use Node's error.code for spawn failures.
Show the failed command in the retry hint. Show a relative directory when needed.
Omit the directory when it is current or on another Windows drive.
Tell Windows users to change to the project directory before retrying across drives.
Quote POSIX shell and PowerShell command arguments.
Keep successful commands quiet.
Why
Package manager output can contain credentials and private paths.
The CLI reports known error codes instead of raw error text.
Unknown errors show the exit status and a retry hint.
Verification
The build passed at commit 89a7550 after the latest main merge.
The two focused suites passed all 32 tests.
The full run passed 202 suites and 3,062 tests.
The full run used test-only Git settings to disable global signing and hooks in temporary repositories.
Tests also cover Windows paths on the current drive and another drive.
Test child processes use process.exitCode so output can finish before exit.
Redactions
The CLI does not print package manager output or raw spawn errors.
Retry hints do not print absolute project paths.
Tests use synthetic credentials and paths.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Failed install commands now show a recognized npm, pnpm, or Yarn error code when available; successful installs do not show an error code.
Failure messages suggest a retry command with platform-appropriate quoting and directory guidance.
Failure summaries limit displayed command output and avoid exposing raw spawn-error messages.
When no recognized package-manager error code is available, the failure message still provides a retry hint.
Failed install commands now report recognized package-manager error codes when available. The runner retains bounded output for code detection without displaying raw command output. Failure messages include a platform-specific retry hint.

Summary
Capture output and extract error codes src/utils/fix-runner.ts, tests/fix-runner-command.test.ts
runInstallCommand retains up to 8 KiB of stdout and stderr and extracts recognized npm, pnpm, and Yarn error codes from failed commands. Tests cover filtering, output limits, spawn errors, and successful commands.
Format fix failure guidance src/utils/fix-runner.ts, tests/fix-runner-apply.test.ts, tests/cli-integration.test.ts
Failure messages include an available error code and a platform-specific retry hint. Tests cover POSIX and PowerShell quoting, directory handling, and omission of raw spawn-error messages.
OWASP/cve-lite-cli#1387: Its structured argv builders provide command parts that this change uses to run installs and format retry hints.

Explanation
The title uses the required "fix: " prefix, lowercase text after the colon, and no trailing period. It summarizes the main change: --fix install failures now report safe, allowlisted error codes instead of raw output.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's "What changed" and includes a "Closes #1435" reference. It also adds Why, Verification, and Redactions sections. It explains the bounded output capture, the allowlisted error codes, the retry hint behavior, and the privacy reasoning. The template heading is "What changed and why", and the description splits that into separate headings, but the required content is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Users now get an allowlisted error code and a safe retry hint when an install command fails. In src/utils/fix-runner.ts, retainOutputTail bounds stdout and stderr separately to 8 KiB. fixErrorCode returns only recognized npm, pnpm, and Yarn codes. applyFixesIfRequested does not include captured output or raw spawn messages in failure text. Unknown nonzero exits retain the status and direct-run hint, and successful commands return without an error summary. tests/fix-runner-command.test.ts covers code extraction, secret text, bounded output, spawn errors, and successful commands that write stderr. It also confirms that Yarn peer warnings such as YN0002 are ignored, consistent with the stated distinction between failure codes and warnings. These changes meet linked issue [#1435].
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The install-failure implementation and its tests support [#1435]. The tests/cli-integration.test.ts summary also identifies a type-assertion change in the HTML report test. That assertion change does not test or support install-failure diagnostics, bounded output, or retry hints. I found no connection to [#1435].
Resolution
Remove the unrelated HTML report test assertion change from tests/cli-integration.test.ts. Keep the install-failure integration test changes.
Full details: Closes Keyword Matches Scope
Explanation
The PR body uses Closes #1435. Issue #1435 asks the CLI to report recognized Yarn error codes, and names YN0002 as an example. The changed YARN_FAILURE_CODE allowlist omits YN0002, and tests/fix-runner-command.test.ts explicitly expects it to produce no error code. The PR therefore leaves a stated issue item incomplete while closing the issue.
Resolution
Add YN0002 to YARN_FAILURE_CODE and update the tests and failure output to report it. If the PR intentionally excludes YN0002, change Closes #1435 to Refs #1435 so the issue is not auto-closed.

Make the byte limit cut through a multibyte character.
I would adjust this fixture so the 8 KiB cut starts inside café or 🚀. With 400 repeated lines, the current cut lands inside ASCII <redacted> text. The \uFFFD assertion therefore cannot detect a split UTF-8 character at that boundary. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “Flag tests that assert a constant equals its own literal, tests that only assert on mocks, and fixtures that cannot exhibit the condition they claim to test.”

Protect credentials when the retained line is truncated.
If a long JSON error has no later newline, the retained tail can start at Basic after the authorization key has been discarded. The summary then exposes the credential. I would redact before discarding the prefix, or suppress a partial line when it cannot be sanitized safely.
Based on learnings, diagnostics must not expose sensitive data.

Fix the unresolved writeHtmlReport reference in the changed test.
This PR modifies tests/cli-integration.test.ts, so the changed-test type-check gate checks it. The gate fails on line 1451 because writeHtmlReport is not in scope. The jest.mock factory defines only the property writeHtmlReport: writeHtmlReportMock, which does not create a binding. The unchanged line also exists at the base revision, so this PR did not add the reference. The gate ignores errors in unchanged files, but it reports errors in files the PR touches, so this one now fails the job.
Type the assertion from the mock, which is the binding this file defines:

Thanks @luojiyin1987. I like where this landed: an allowlist of codes is much easier to trust than a redaction engine, and it means no credential or private path can reach the terminal. Breaking that guarantee (printing the raw spawn message or the raw stderr) fails your tests, which is what I wanted to see, and merged with current main the full suite passes.
The catch is that it only works for npm. I triggered real failures with each package manager: npm wrote ERESOLVE to stderr (882 bytes, first line, so the 8 KiB tail is plenty), but pnpm 11 wrote ERR_PNPM_FETCH_404 to stdout and Yarn 4 wrote its YN codes to stdout with stderr empty. So for pnpm and Yarn users this would print no code at all. The tests feed synthetic codes into stderr, which is why they pass. Details inline.
On CodeRabbit's suggestion to show a redacted reason when there's no known code: I'd leave that out. Not printing package manager output is the point of #1435, and the exit status plus the hint is the right fallback. Its other suggestion, naming the command to rerun, I agree with.

Read bounded stdout and stderr output for allowed error codes. Match error lines to avoid warnings and credential text. Show the failed command and directory in the retry hint. Add process and CLI tests for these cases.
Read npm error lines with the current prefix. Keep npm warn lines out of error code matches. Format Windows retry commands for PowerShell. Add tests for both npm formats and Windows quoting.

Thanks, this is in good shape, and all four of the earlier points are sorted. I ran it against real package managers and three things came up:
pnpm 11 wraps the code in brackets, like [ERR_PNPM_FETCH_404] GET …, so with real pnpm no code shows. Could the matcher allow an optional [ and ], with a test using that exact line?
Yarn prints warnings and info in the same ➤ YNxxxx: format, so the first code is often not the failure. I got YN0002 (missing peer) where the real failure was YN0009 (build failed). A short list of Yarn failure codes, or taking the last code instead of the first, would fix it. The test expecting YN0002 would need to change.
The retry hint prints the full absolute project path, which includes the user's home folder, in output that gets pasted into issues. Could it leave the directory out when it's the current one, and show it relative otherwise?
Optional: ENOTFOUND, ECONNREFUSED and ETIMEDOUT are common with private registries and safe to show.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks @luojiyin1987, all of it is sorted. I ran it against real npm, pnpm and Yarn failures: pnpm's bracketed [ERR_PNPM_FETCH_404] comes through, Yarn now reports the build failure rather than the peer warning before it, and an unreachable npm registry shows ENOTFOUND. I also had a fake package manager print a token, an internal host and a home-folder log path, and none of it reached the output. Approved.
Two optional follow-ups, no need to hold this for them:
The retry hint is relative to wherever the command was run, so from a folder that isn't above the project (say /tmp) it still prints the home folder, as ../Users/alice/work/app. When the relative path starts with .., falling back to the "change to the project directory" wording you already use across drives would close that.
pnpm reports an unreachable registry as ERR_PNPM_META_FETCH_FAIL, so it might be worth adding next to the npm network codes.

Thanks @luojiyin1987, both follow-ups are in: a project directory above where the command ran now gets the change-directory wording, and ERR_PNPM_META_FETCH_FAIL is recognised. The -ErrorAction Stop and cd './dir' hardening are good additions. One small thing: the new CDPATH test fails on macOS, because the temp folder there is a symlink (/var to /private/var), so pwd prints the resolved path and the comparison never matches. Wrapping the expected directory in realpathSync should fix it. CI passes since Linux has no symlink there. Everything else passes on the merge with current main.

Thanks @luojiyin1987. The retry hint now changes into the project directory first and stops if that fails, on both POSIX and PowerShell, ./ keeps CDPATH out of it, and a project outside the current folder gets the "change to the project directory" wording instead of a ../ path through the home folder. On the merge with current main, 215 suites / 3,251 tests pass and the build is clean, and putting back any of those three lets the tests fail. Approved. The pnpm ERR_PNPM_META_FETCH_FAIL code is still a nice-to-have; happy to take that as its own PR.
Merged - thank you @luojiyin1987! A failed --fix now says which error the package manager hit and how to see the rest, without echoing its raw output.
