fix: preserve last good advisory DB on failed refresh - #1483
cve-lite advisories sync deleted the local advisory database before downloading its replacement. A failed download or extraction could therefore remove the last known-good database and prevent subsequent offline scans.
Build the replacement in a temporary directory beside the target and install it only after download, extraction, and ingestion succeed. Reject directory output paths before any write or download, and reject archives with no usable advisories, including withdrawn-only data and records without affected entries.
If direct replacement is refused, keep a unique backup and restore it using atomic hardlink creation, which refuses an existing destination. A database installed by another sync is never overwritten during rollback. If restoration is unavailable, retain the backup and report recovery instructions that explicitly preserve any newer target.
Record staging ownership and sweep only same-host staging directories whose recorded owner has exited. Claim each abandoned directory before removal; interrupted cleanup claims remain reclaimable after their own process exits. Active, permission-restricted, foreign-host, symlinked and legacy/unverifiable directories are preserved.
Return staging and backup cleanup warnings through the CLI, preserving error causes for TLS diagnostics. The CLI distinguishes failed first syncs, unchanged databases, completed replacement, and manual recovery. A shared sentence helper prevents missing or doubled punctuation when diagnostic messages are joined.
Validation
npm ci, npm run lint:tests, npm run build.
node dist/index.js advisories sync: synced 230,432 records.
npm test -- --runInBand: 205 suites and 3,142 tests passed.
Focused sync and CLI reporting tests: 48 passed.
node scripts/typecheck-changed-tests.mjs origin/main: all three changed test files passed.
Rebased onto current main; whitespace check passed.
Regression coverage includes early directory rejection, symlink behavior, abandoned versus active staging ownership, interrupted cleanup claims, metadata-write failures, startup cleanup warnings on success/failure, concurrent install/restore races, retained recovery backups, installed database contents after callback failure, and sentence punctuation. Existing download, archive, ingestion, empty-data, warning suppression and TLS cause regressions remain covered.

Bug Fixes
Advisory database refreshes now preserve existing data when downloading or processing an update fails, or when an update contains no usable advisories.
If refreshed data cannot be installed, the system attempts to restore the previous database. If restoration also fails, the error reports both failures and where the backup remains.
Temporary-file cleanup failures are reported as warnings after a successful refresh or included in the failure details when a refresh fails.
The command-line interface provides clearer failure details and reports cleanup warnings.
A failed OSV refresh now preserves the existing advisory database unless installation and restoration both fail. The sync stages a replacement before installation and reports database state and cleanup warnings through the CLI.

Summary
Stage and validate advisory data src/advisory/osv-sync.ts, tests/osv-sync.test.ts
The sync downloads archive bytes and builds the staged database before installation. It rejects archives with no usable advisories. Tests cover download and ingestion failures, empty archives, and cleanup outcomes.
Install the database and report recovery src/advisory/osv-sync.ts, tests/osv-sync.test.ts
The sync installs the staged database and uses backup restoration when installation fails. It reports whether the database is unchanged, replaced, or requires recovery. Tests cover installation, restoration, backup cleanup, and callback failures.
Report sync outcomes in the CLI src/cli/advisories-sync.ts, tests/cli/advisories-sync.test.ts, tests/cli-integration.test.ts
The CLI distinguishes unchanged-database failures and logs successful cleanup warnings. Tests cover CLI messages, warning output, SSL error identification, and mock typing.
Failed downloads now preserve the previous database, but directory output paths should be rejected before merging. Concurrent refresh recovery and interrupted-sync cleanup also retain bounded risks.

The title uses the required fix: short description format, uses lowercase after the colon, has no trailing period, and accurately describes preserving the last good advisory database after a failed refresh.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The change meets the coding requirements in #1482. syncOsvAdvisories creates a temporary directory beside the configured database, downloads and ingests into the staged database, and replaces the live database only after successful ingestion. Download, extraction, invalid-data, and no-usable-advisory failures leave the existing database unchanged. The code cleans staged data on success and failure, and the tests cover preservation and cleanup behavior. Replacement fallback and restore guidance protect the previous database when direct replacement is refused.

Explanation
The changes stay within #1482. Usable-record validation, backup and restore handling, cleanup warnings, CLI database-state messages, JSON warning suppression, and error-cause preservation support safe advisory refresh failure handling. The added tests cover these paths. The change does not implement the separate contextual work in #1138.

Explanation
The body uses Closes #1482. Issue #1482 asks for three outcomes: preserve the existing database when download or refresh preparation fails, build the replacement in a temporary location and install it only after successful download, extraction, and ingestion, and clean temporary files after success or failure. The diff implements all three in src/advisory/osv-sync.ts: it stages a database beside the target, replaces the target only after buildAdvisoryDatabase succeeds, leaves the target untouched before replacement, and cleans the staging directory in finally. The added tests cover download, ingestion, empty-data failures, and cleanup. No issue requirement is missing.

syncOsvAdvisories is about 120 lines, and the ingest step is a good candidate for its own helper
The temp-database lifecycle (open, ingest, close, replace, clean up) is the part of this function that matters most for the new guarantee. The parse and filter loop around it makes that lifecycle hard to follow. I would move the loop into a helper, for example ingestAdvisories(db, advisoryEntries, sourceUrl, onProgress): number. Then syncOsvAdvisories reads as: download, unzip, open the temp database, ingest, close, replace.
The path instructions flag functions that grow past roughly 60 lines when a distinct step could be its own helper.

Extract the advisory parsing, filtering, progress reporting, bulk upsert, and
metadata update from syncOsvAdvisories into an ingestAdvisories helper that
accepts the database, advisory entries, source URL, and progress callback, and
returns the processed advisory count. Keep syncOsvAdvisories focused on the

Add ingestion-failure coverage for the temporary database path.
Add ingestion-failure coverage for the temporary database path.
The added test covers only a download failure. The temporary directory exists at that point, but LocalAdvisoryDatabase has not opened the temporary database. Add a test with a successful download and an archive entry whose .json content is invalid. Build that entry from raw bytes rather than through createZipPayload, because createZipPayload JSON-stringifies every value. Assert that ingestion rejects, the existing database content is unchanged, and the temporary directory contains only advisories.db.

When replaceAdvisoryDatabase succeeds, a later fs.rmSync failure makes the CLI report a failed sync even though the refreshed database is installed. When download or ingestion fails, the same finally error can hide the original failure. Track whether replacement completed, warn when cleanup fails after installation, and include the cleanup error with the original error on failed refreshes.

Move the cleanup-failure handling out of syncOsvAdvisories.
This block makes the function much longer than the roughly 60 lines the path instructions allow. The function now runs from Line 170 to Line 288. The cleanup policy is a distinct step with three outcomes: warn after install, wrap the refresh error, or do nothing. I suggest a helper such as reportTempDirCleanupFailure(tempDir, cleanupError, refreshError, databaseInstalled). The helper would hold the message building and the throw. The download and extract step (Lines 194 to 232) is a second candidate for extraction.
The behavior stays the same, and the main function reads as download, ingest, install, clean up.

Extract the cleanup-failure handling from syncOsvAdvisories into a focused

neither condition applies.

A falsy thrown value can turn a failed refresh into a "successful" undefined result.
A falsy thrown value can turn a failed refresh into a "successful" undefined result.
I like the new flow, where the existing database stays put and the original error is rethrown. One gap remains in the final check. The code tests refreshError for truthiness, then returns syncResult!. If a failure throws a falsy value (undefined, 0, "", for example from a custom fetchImpl), the if is skipped. syncResult is still unset, so the function returns undefined. Callers would see a completed sync that never ran.
Checking syncResult directly removes both the falsy-value gap and the non-null assertion. It also keeps the case where databaseInstalled is true but onProgress threw after the install, because syncResult is unset there and refreshError is rethrown.

Update the final result check around refreshError and syncResult to use
syncResult === undefined as the failure condition, then throw refreshError;
return syncResult otherwise. This must reject even when the thrown value is
falsy and preserve rethrowing when onProgress fails after installation leaves
syncResult unset.

Thanks @vianmangal, this is the right fix. I failed a refresh five ways against a local stand-in (refused, a 500, a truncated stream, a corrupt archive and malformed JSON), and every time the old database survived, --offline scans still worked, sync exited non-zero and no temp folder was left behind. A good sync replaced it cleanly, and the full suite passes on the merge with main. A few small things before it goes in.

fix(osv-sync): preserve last good advisory DB on failed refresh

Add a withdrawn-only archive to the rejection tests.
The "no usable advisories" test uses a README-only archive. That archive has no .json entries, so it cannot distinguish a check on the usable-record count from a check on the .json entry count. If the check moved to the .json count, this test would still pass. A withdrawn-only archive would then install an empty database.
Add a test that builds a ZIP with one withdrawn advisory and an existing database. Assert that syncOsvAdvisories rejects with the "no usable advisory records" error and that the database contents are unchanged.

This is really close. Every point from last time is sorted: the database is never touched until the new one is complete, temp folders get cleaned up on every path I tried, warnings come back through the CLI instead of going straight to stderr, and the function split reads much better. Mutating the key pieces fails the right tests every time. Just one punctuation thing left in the user-facing error text, below.
Check the installed database in the callback-throw test.
This test checks only the reported databaseState and message. It does not read dbPath. A change that reports "replaced" without writing the new database would still pass. The "replaced" assertion already fails if the callback runs before the rename, so the remaining gap is the on-disk result. Seed dbPath with known contents and assert that the file changed.

Thanks @vianmangal, the punctuation is right now in both directions, and the concurrent-sync and staging work is careful. On the merge with current main, 205 suites / 3,146 tests pass and the build is clean. I also failed a real sync with four leftover staging folders beside the database: the one whose owner had exited was removed, while one with no owner record, one whose owner is still running and one for a different database were left alone, and the old database survived. Approved.
One question, not a blocker: restoring the previous database now goes through a hard link. On a drive that doesn't support them (exFAT, some network shares) a failed install would always end in the manual-rename message rather than restoring. Is it worth falling back to the rename when linking isn't supported?
@sonukapoor
Extra compatibility is always worth adding. My concern with a rename fallback is that checking whether the target exists before renaming still leaves a race where another sync could install its database, which the rollback would then overwrite.
I’d lean toward keeping the backup and recovery instructions for now, and handling automatic recovery on those filesystems in a follow-up with the same concurrency guarantees.
