Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Build checks generate and validate a software bill of materials (SBOM) using Python 3.12. Validation tools are pinned and hash-verified. SBOM generation warnings proceed to validation, while more severe errors fail the build. These changes affect build verification only; application behavior remains unchanged.

The CI build now sets up Python 3.12, installs pinned SPDX tools dependencies with SHA-256 hashes, generates an SPDX SBOM, and validates it with pyspdxtools.

Changes: CI SPDX SBOM validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate and validate the SPDX SBOM
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/spdx-tools-requirements.txt
The build job installs pinned, hash-verified dependencies and generates an SPDX SBOM. Generation exit codes above 1 fail the step; exit codes 0 or 1 proceed to pyspdxtools validation.

Explanation

The change implements the CI portion of #1473. .github/workflows/ci.yml sets up Python 3.12, installs hash-verified spdx-tools, generates sbom.spdx.json with --sbom spdx, and runs pyspdxtools --infile sbom.spdx.json. The separate Jest schema-validation work is not required for this PR 2 objective.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to the CI workflow and its pinned spdx-tools requirements file. Both files support the #1473 CI validator objective. No unrelated source, test, package, or workflow changes are evidenced.

Full details: Closes Keyword Matches Scope

Explanation

The body uses Closes #1473. Issue #1473 requires both scopes: Jest validation with the vendored SPDX schema, ajv, and ajv-formats, plus CI validation with the official spdx-tools CLI. This PR adds the CI workflow and pinned Python requirements, but the head still has no ajv-formats dependency or lockfile entry. The existing schema and AJV test are unchanged by this PR. Merging would close the issue with the required ajv-formats item incomplete.

Resolution

Add ajv-formats to devDependencies and update package-lock.json, or change the description from Closes #1473 to Refs #1473 until the missing requirement is complete.

Setting Effective value Source

Matching overrides (numbered as in the resolved configuration):

  • Override 1 — any author; paths: .github/**, action.yml, package.json, package-lock.json, tsconfig*.json, jest.config.*, scripts/**; automatic approvals: disabled.

Any matching disabled override withholds approval, regardless of risk. Otherwise, the strictest explicitly set limit wins for each score. Limits omitted by all matching overrides inherit the global configuration.

Not set means no limit was configured after inheritance. Use @coderabbitai configuration to inspect the resolved settings and their sources.

Thanks @Nachiket-Roy. The step does what #1473 asks: on the CI run the SBOM is generated and pyspdxtools validates it cleanly. Three things before it goes in:

  • Could spdx-tools be pinned to an exact version, ideally through a small requirements file installed with --require-hashes, and Python to a specific minor version rather than 3.x? As written, every CI run installs whatever is newest from PyPI, along with eight transitive packages. For a supply-chain security project that's exactly the input we'd want fixed.
  • The SBOM is produced by a normal scan of the repo, which fails on any critical finding by default. A new critical advisory against one of our dependencies would then turn this validation step red for a reason that has nothing to do with SPDX. The vulnerability gate already has its own job, so could this step generate the SBOM without the severity gate deciding its outcome?
  • A short comment above the step saying what it checks would help the next person reading ci.yml.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Validate a fresh SBOM file.

If the checkout or an earlier test leaves sbom.spdx.json, a generator error can make CI validate that old file and pass. src/index.ts also exits with code 1 for unhandled errors, not just gated findings. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

I recommend generating the SBOM in a fresh temporary directory before validating it.

Thanks @Nachiket-Roy, this is everything I asked for. The tools are hash-pinned and --require-hashes would fail on anything missing, Python is pinned, and the step validates even when the scan finds something above the baseline, which the CI log on this head actually shows. All 3,250 tests pass on the merge with main.

Two small things, both fine as a follow-up:

  • The status -gt 1 branch can't fire, since the CLI only exits 0 or 1. The rm -f plus test -f is what actually catches a crash, so the branch could go or its comment could say that.
  • actions/setup-python v5.4.0 logs a Node 20 deprecation warning. Worth bumping to a SHA-pinned current release.
