What

The dashboard only fetched /api/usage once on page load (plus on manual Refresh), so a long-lived tab went stale.

Poll every 60s using the existing cache path, and kick off an immediate fetch when the tab becomes visible again.

How

  • New POLL_MS = 60_000 constant.
  • schedulePoll() uses a self-rescheduling setTimeout so ticks can't overlap with an in-flight load(). While document.hidden, the tick is skipped (timer still runs so no extra bookkeeping is needed).
  • visibilitychange listens for the tab becoming visible and triggers load() immediately, with a loading guard so it can't race a manual Refresh.
  • No extra server work: the poll uses the default no-arg fetch, which hits the in-memory + on-disk cache in UsageState::load; a stale-detected response still flows through the existing startup rescan path in load().

Verification

  • node --check src/web/app.js
  • node --test src/web/data.test.mjs (12/12)
  • cargo test web:: (11/11)
  • cargo run -- web --port 18765, curl against / and /app.js returns 200 and the new code is present in the served bundle.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Usage data now refreshes automatically every 60 seconds. Refreshing pauses while the page is hidden or data is loading, and resumes when the page becomes visible.

Poll /api/usage without ?refresh=true so the server-side cache is
used and no rescan is triggered; a stale response still kicks off
the startup rescan path. Skip ticks while the tab is hidden and
catch up immediately when it becomes visible again.

Review was skipped due to path filters

⛔ Files ignored due to path filters: 1
  • Cargo.lock is excluded by !**/*.lock

CodeRabbit blocks several paths by default. You can override this behavior by explicitly including those paths in the path filters. For example, including **/dist/** will override the default block on the dist directory, by removing the pattern from both the lists.

📝 Walkthrough

The web app now polls for usage data every 60 seconds. It skips polls while the document is hidden or a load is active. When the document becomes visible, it loads data if no load is active.

Changes: Usage Data Polling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Polling and visibility handling
src/web/app.js
The app schedules a 60-second poll after its initial load. Each poll loads data only when the document is visible and no load is active. A visibility change to visible also starts a load when none is active.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ddca3

Restoring a visible tab can cause one extra cached usage request near the next poll. The impact is bounded, so the change remains mergeable with awareness of this minor inefficiency.

Visibility handler can start a load while the 60 s timer is about to fire.

When the tab becomes visible, load() runs immediately. The pending timer is not reset. A second poll can then run shortly after, because loading is already false. This causes a redundant fetch, not a failure. The effect is small.

If you want a clean cadence, store the timer id. Clear and restart it in the visibility handler.

Update the visibility handler around `load()` to clear and restart the pending
polling timer when the tab becomes visible, and store the timer ID so the
