Abort and cleanup primitives src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/stream-cleanup.ts, src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/abort-signal.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/stream-cleanup.spec.ts |
Adds helpers to bridge external abort signals, validate and convert timeouts, and invoke cleanup after stream iteration. Tests cover signal propagation and disposal, timeout validation, and cleanup after completion, failure, or early return. |
Streaming request cancellation src/api/providers/anthropic.ts, src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts, src/api/providers/minimax.ts, src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic-vertex.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/minimax.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/xai.spec.ts |
Streaming requests pass bridged signals and clean up listeners across request and stream lifecycles. xAI normalizes recognized abort failures. Anthropic caching requests add the caching beta. Tests cover lifecycle handling, xAI request parameters, and Anthropic Vertex usage-token defaults. |
Complete-prompt request options src/api/providers/anthropic.ts, src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts, src/api/providers/minimax.ts, src/api/providers/xai.ts, src/api/providers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/io-intelligence.ts, src/api/providers/nanogpt.ts, src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/* |
Complete-prompt handlers forward optional abort signals and usable timeouts. Accepted timeouts are rounded up and capped; unusable values are omitted. Native Ollama uses the shared timeout helpers for timer scheduling. |
Provider timeout and test hygiene packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.js, packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.test.js, src/eslint.config.mjs, src/api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts, src/api/transform/__tests__/vscode-lm-format.spec.ts |
Adds lint selectors for timeout forwarding, shared helpers, timeout limits, and assertion loops over literal arrays. Updates selector tests and parameterizes existing provider and transform tests. |

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to ca3db
-
Both providers now clean up abort listeners when streams complete. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.
Security Architecture Review
-
Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to
ac0e1Cancellation now reaches more model requests, and xAI tool choices are translated without adding tool definitions. No new security exposure was established. One lifecycle question remains: whether closing a stream early also stops work at the provider.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The changed cancellation behavior applies to requests using the four affected adapters and their external model SDKs. The inspected controllers are request-local rather than shared across concurrent requests.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- inferred — Caller metadata controls cancellation and tool selection at the provider boundary. The inspected xAI translation changes selection format, not the set of submitted callable tool definitions; upstream authorization and downstream execution were not established by this scope.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — xAI propagates native and SDK abort errors without applying its ordinary provider-error wrapper, preserving a distinction for callers that recognize those error forms.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Verify with the SDK contract or an integration test whether early consumer return cancels the underlying provider request; if it does not, explicitly terminate that request on early exit.

Full details: Description check
-
Explanation
The description is detailed and covers the linked issue, implementation scope, test coverage, verification results, and review follow-ups. It omits the repository template headings and checklist, but the required technical information is mostly present.
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. The provider changes forward caller-owned abort signals and validated timeout values; they do not expose secrets or PII, execute input, or remove an approval or allowlist check. The xAI request keeps
store: false, and the Anthropic model switch remains the existing model boundary.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes provider request options, abort-signal bridging, stream cleanup, timeout conversion, tests, and lint rules. The Anthropic prompt-caching change only adds a request header. The diff contains no persistence writes, storage operations, rollback paths, or persisted-default propagation.
-
Full details: Regression Evidence
-
Explanation
The prior regression remains unresolved.
AnthropicVertexHandler.createMessagenow places SDK stream creation andfor awaititeration inside afinallythat removes the external abort listener (src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts:137-249). The Vertex tests cover normal completion, request-creation failure, and early consumer return (src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic-vertex.spec.ts:815-909), but no Vertex-focused test uses an async iterable that yields a chunk and then throws during iteration while asserting error propagation and listener removal. The genericstream-cleanup.spec.tstest does not exercise the Vertex handler path.Resolution
Add a focused
anthropic-vertex.spec.tstest with an external abort signal and an async iterable that yields one valid chunk, then throws. Assert thatcollectStreamrejects with the stream error and thatremoveEventListener("abort", retainedListener)is called once with the retained listener. Keep the existing completion, request-creation failure, and early-return tests.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
-
Explanation
The prior lifecycle leak remains in changed code. In
src/api/providers/minimax.ts:90-97,bridgeExternalAbortSignalregisters a listener before preprocessing.convertOpenAIToolsToAnthropicruns at line 123, outside the cleanuptryat line 128, andsrc/core/prompts/tools/native-tools/converters.ts:28-32throws for a non-functiontool. With a live caller signal and such a tool, createMessagerejects while the listener and per-request controller remain attached. Vertex has the same ordering gap: its bridge at lines 90-97 precedesaddCacheBreakpointsat line 121 and thetryat line 137. Existing tests cover completion and request-creation failures, but not preprocessing failures.Resolution
Create each abort bridge after synchronous preprocessing, or put all work after bridge creation inside a
try/finallythat calls the disposer. Add regression tests for MiniMax unsupported-tool preprocessing and Vertex cache-breakpoint preprocessing failures, with assertions that the external signal listener is removed.

- completePrompt: forward CompletePromptOptions abortSignal/timeoutMs into the SDK request for AnthropicHandler, AnthropicVertexHandler, XAIHandler, and MiniMaxHandler (request options built only when a signal/timeout is provided, preserving existing behavior)

- xai: rethrow AbortError unmodified from createMessage/completePrompt so callers can detect error.name === 'AbortError'

CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1) would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative control: mutating Math.ceil to Math.floor fails exactly this test.

The four completePrompt copies forwarded any defined timeoutMs. The Anthropic SDK turns timeout: 0 into an immediate abort and its request validation throws on negative, NaN and Infinity, so the series convention (timeoutMs <= 0 or non-finite means no explicit timeout) must leave the option absent. Fractional delays are rounded up, matching mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout. hasUsableTimeout is the shared predicate: it also backs mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, so the rule is single-sourced for both the option and the signal.

197-200: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessThe prior prompt-caching header behavior already covered every model in this branch. The merge-base nested switch contains the same model IDs as the current outer switch, so this change does not newly add headers for unsupported models. The custom-proxy rejection claim is also unsupported by repository evidence.

…family The four SDK option paths rounded fractional timeouts up but did not cap them, so an overflowing timeout would be clamped to 1 ms by Node. Add toSdkTimeoutMs (+ MAX_TIMEOUT_MS) next to hasUsableTimeout, use it in mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout and at all four provider sites, and cover the fractional/cap boundaries.

…thropic family Review follow-ups: move the mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout JSDoc back above its function (MAX_TIMEOUT_MS and toSdkTimeoutMs now sit before it); the completePrompt timeout tests in the anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax and xai specs are now it.each cases covering a whole-number, a fractional (12.5 -> 13) and an over-cap (MAX+1 -> MAX) value, so forwarding the raw timeoutMs instead of calling toSdkTimeoutMs fails in every provider. Affected suites 364 passed.

Wire the request-level
CompletePromptOptions(abortSignal/timeoutMs) and the Task-levelmetadata.abortSignalthrough the anthropic-family providers and xAI/MiniMax, so user-initiated cancellation and timeouts reach the underlying SDK calls.Providers / paths touched

Merged current upstream
maininto the branch to clear the dirty state. Two conflicts, both resolved by keeping both sides' intent:anthropic-vertex.ts: main addedreasoningTokens(output_tokens_details.thinking_tokens) to themessage_start/message_deltausage yields; this branch re-indented the same switch inside its abort-bridging try block. Kept main's reasoningTokens content at the branch's indentation; the bridging changes are untouched.anthropic.spec.ts: both sides added an import (branch: themakeCreateMessageMetadatatest util; main: theApiStreamChunktype). Kept both.Verification at this head: 236/236 green across the five touched specs (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai, stream-cleanup);

Addressed the review threads:
bridgeExternalAbortSignalinutils/abort-signal.ts— one canonical comment, unit-tested including a negative control thatdispose()detaches the exact retained callback.createMessageandcompletePromptnow normalize cancellations throughisRequestAborted+createAbortError; the raw OpenAI SDK abort (nameError, message "Request was aborted.") no longer escapes to callers' AbortError guards. Specs pin the normalized shape.anthropic-betaisbetas.join(",")again so a second beta added to the builder later is not silently dropped.mapToolChoicemapping, the typed request body, the unconditionalmax_output_tokens/temperature, and the vertexcontent_block_stopremoval left this branch and are back up as their own PR (refactor(providers): map xAI tool_choice to the Responses API shape with a typed request body #2036); this unit is abort-wiring only again.Verification at this head: 273/273 green across the six touched specs;
tsc --noEmit→ 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean;prettier --checkclean on touched files.Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
The one
// Stryker disable next-line ObjectLiteral,BooleanLiteralinutils/abort-signal.tswas removed (directive comments are banned in touched files). Equivalence: onsignal.addEventListener("abort", onAbort, { once: true }), the ObjectLiteral mutant ({}) and the BooleanLiteral mutant (once: false) are unobservable - an AbortSignal fires its abort event exactly once per signal, so the once flag can never change listener invocation count, and the listener is additionally removed explicitly in the callers' finally blocks. No test can distinguish the mutants; maintainers may exclude or accept the advisory.Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.
Fractional-timeout rounding wave
Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).
Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)
The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).
