Closes: #2096

Description

This change adds static OAuth client settings for Streamable HTTP MCP servers.

  • Add a required client ID and optional scope, redirect URI, and resource settings.
  • Skip dynamic client registration when a static client ID is present.
  • Keep the existing dynamic registration flow when static settings are absent.
  • Validate fixed callback URLs as HTTP loopback URLs with an explicit port and /callback path.
  • Support automatic, disabled, and explicit RFC 8707 resource indicators.
  • Store credentials by server URL and static client ID. This prevents one client from using another client's tokens.
  • Keep static OAuth settings invalid for stdio and SSE servers.

Reviewers should check the callback URL validation and resource indicator behavior with care. These settings support authorization servers that protect dynamic registration or reject resource indicators.

Test Procedure

  1. Run pnpm lint.
  2. Run pnpm check-types.
  3. Run the MCP hub, OAuth provider, and secret storage unit tests.
  4. Run the MCP OAuth integration check for all grant combinations.
  5. Run the full Turborepo test suite.
  6. Build the extension bundle and run the asset tests.
  7. Configure a Streamable HTTP MCP server with a registered public client.
  8. Confirm that the browser uses the configured callback URL and scope.
  9. Confirm that authentication succeeds without a dynamic registration request.
  10. Confirm that a stored refresh token renews an expired access token.

Results:

  • 154 focused MCP tests passed.
  • 16 integration grant combinations passed.
  • 40 asset tests passed.
  • 11,060 tests passed and 39 tests were skipped in the full source test run.
  • ESLint, TypeScript, Prettier, Knip, Knip production, bundle, and diff checks passed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added configurable OAuth support for streamable HTTP MCP servers, including client IDs, scopes, redirect URIs, and resource indicators.
    • Added support for static OAuth clients with customized authorization settings and callback handling.
    • Improved OAuth discovery, authorization, token exchange, and credential storage for configured clients.
    • Isolated stored OAuth credentials when multiple client IDs use the same server.
    • Added support for selecting a secure loopback callback host.
  • Bug Fixes

    • OAuth settings are now rejected for unsupported server types.
    • Added validation for client IDs, redirect URIs, and resource values.

Streamable HTTP MCP configuration now supports optional static OAuth client settings. The provider uses configured client IDs, scopes, callback URIs, and resource behavior. OAuth storage and MCP hub token operations are scoped by client ID.

Static OAuth clients may request scopes beyond those configured, which contradicts the feature's stated requirement. After a restart, token refresh may also omit the resource used at sign-in, which can force re-authentication on some servers. Fix the scope enforcement and review the refresh behavior before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2096] is active and directly linked. McpHub accepts OAuth settings only for streamable-http and rejects them for stdio and sse. Static clientId values bypass dynamic registration. McpOAuthClientProvider supports configured scopes, PKCE flow, loopback callback validation, resource modes, token refresh, and Secret Storage. SecretStorageService keys data by server URL and client ID. The provider preserves discovery and dynamic registration when no static client is configured. Added tests cover callback hosts, resource parameters, static registration bypass, refresh-related storage, and client isolation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code implements issue [#2096]. It updates MCP OAuth configuration, callback binding, resource handling, registration, token persistence, and token refresh. The changed tests and ESLint suppression update support those implementation changes. No unrelated feature or data change is shown.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The prior scope-allowlist failure remains unresolved. In the changed static-client path, McpOAuthClientProvider.create() stores configured oauth.scope in _scopes (McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:124-128, 148), but redirectToAuthorization() copies every SDK query parameter (:426-429) and only applies _scopes when scope is absent (:430-433). With oauth.scope: "read" and an SDK authorization URL containing scope=admin%20write, the opened authorization request sends admin write, bypassing the configured scope allowlist. The added tests cover configured scopes only when the SDK omits scope; they do not cover a broader incoming SDK scope.

Resolution

Make configured scope authoritative. After copying SDK parameters, overwrite the authorization URL scope with the configured scope whenever static oauth.scope is set, including the fallback path when endpoint correction fails. Add a regression test with oauth.scope: "read" and an incoming SDK URL containing a broader scope, and verify that only read is sent.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

Static-client refresh persistence can lose the refresh token. tokens() reads the configured client record at McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:322, and refreshAccessToken() overwrites that record at :595-596 via saveTokens() with the response object. If a successful refresh response omits refresh_token, the prior refresh token is discarded. On the next access-token expiry, tokens() has no refresh token and requires full authorization. The changed static-client path uses the client-scoped storage key, so this is a concrete persistence failure for the feature. Current tests cover only a response with a replacement refresh token.

Resolution

When a refresh response omits refresh_token, read or retain the existing stored token data and merge its refresh token into the new token set before saving. Keep the existing persisted record until the merged saveOAuthData operation succeeds. Add a static-client test with a refresh response that omits refresh_token, then verify the stored refresh token remains available for a subsequent refresh.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior coverage gaps remain. McpOAuthClientProvider.refreshAccessToken() now applies _effectiveResourceIndicator to refresh requests (src/services/mcp/McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:566-575), but the only refresh test uses a dynamic provider and checks only grant_type (McpOAuthClientProvider.spec.ts:407-443). No static-client refresh test asserts omission for resource: false or inclusion for an explicit resource. McpHub also changed static-client wiring, discovery and registration decisions, client-ID-scoped storage reads/watchers, and restart deletion (McpHub.ts:834-850, 1082-1144, 1193-1217, 1300, 1782-1785). The new hub tests cover only schema parsing (McpHub.spec.ts:1694-1743); existing OAuth-flow tests use { url } without type or oauth and mock connection methods (McpHub.spec.ts:2668-2712).

Resolution

Add focused provider refresh tests for a static client with resource: false and with an explicit resource, and assert the refresh request body. Add McpHub connection-wiring tests for a streamable-HTTP config that assert static options reach McpOAuthClientProvider.create, discovery is not skipped for a configured client, dynamic registration is skipped, and storage reads, watchers, and restart deletion use the configured client ID.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The lifecycle leak remains in the changed static-client path. McpOAuthClientProvider.create() starts a callback listener for a static client without redirectUri at McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:189-196. McpHub.connectToServer() keeps the provider in a local variable and assigns it to a connection only after transport setup at McpHub.ts:839-923 and 977-993. If dispose() races with provider creation or transport setup, dispose() only closes providers in existing connections (McpHub.ts:2495-2528). A subsequent UnauthorizedError can enter _initiateOAuthFlow(), whose disposed branch at McpHub.ts:1104-1108 unsubscribes and returns without closing the provider. The callback listener then remains active.

Resolution

Track the provider immediately after creation, or close it in a try/finally until connection ownership transfers. Make disposal await or cancel in-flight connection setup. Close authProvider before returning from the disposed branch of _initiateOAuthFlow(). Add a race test that disposes the hub between provider creation and connection registration and verifies that the callback server is stopped.

src/services/mcp/McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:229-232
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the configured loopback host to the callback server.

redirectUrl defaults to localhost, but startCallbackServer always binds 127.0.0.1. A localhost redirect can resolve to IPv6 ::1, so the browser cannot reach the IPv4-only listener and the OAuth flow can end with Callback timeout. Use localhost for the default path and pass 127.0.0.1 when that address is configured.

Addressed the additional callback-host finding in cfdd03d. The callback server now binds to the same loopback hostname used by the redirect URI. The default remains localhost, and an explicit 127.0.0.1 redirect binds to 127.0.0.1. Unit coverage verifies both hosts.

src/services/mcp/McpOAuthClientProvider.ts:157-160
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Override the SDK scope for static clients.

SDK 1.31.0 resolves scope as WWW-Authenticate scope, protected-resource scopes_supported, then provider.clientMetadata.scope. McpOAuthClientProvider.clientMetadata does not receive _scopes, and redirectToAuthorization only applies _scopes when the SDK omitted scope. A challenge or metadata response can therefore make a static client request scopes outside options.scope, which violates the acceptance criterion.

Track whether options.scope was explicitly configured. When it is configured, overwrite or remove the URL’s scope with the configured scope. Keep the current fallback behavior when no static scope is configured.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Restore the authorization resource before refreshing tokens.

When provider discovery has no resource but the SDK supplies one, Lines 408-409 retain it only in _effectiveResourceIndicator. A new provider initializes that field to null; saveTokens() does not persist the effective resource. After restart, this refresh request omits the resource used for authorization, so an authorization server that requires it can reject refresh and force another sign-in. Persist and restore the effective resource with the client’s OAuth data. The added SDK-resource test covers the initial exchange but not a new provider instance.
