[4.x] Fix TraitRLSManager model discovery skipping final models - #1512
Conversation
TraitRLSManager::getModels() found the class name by looking for
"\nclass ", so models declared with modifiers (e.g. `final class Post`)
were silently skipped. Those models got no RLS policy, and with
$implicitRLS enabled the single-database traits also dropped their
global scopes, leaving the models completely unscoped.
The class and namespace declarations are now parsed using multiline
regexes that allow class modifiers and CRLF line endings.
Adds a FinalPost test model that shares the posts table with Post. This
exposed a bug in the "correct rls policies get created" test: it called
->values() before ->unique(), so when two discovered models share a
table, the resulting array has a gap in its keys and the canonicalizing
comparison fails. The calls are now in the correct order.
TODO:
- [ ] Add a CRLF regression test. Build the CRLF contents in code at test
time (e.g. file_put_contents() into a temp directory set as
$modelDirectories) so editors can't normalize the line endings.
Put `{` on its own line (`class Foo\r\n{`), since that's the case
where the old parsing kept a trailing \r. The file can name an
existing class (e.g. Etc\Post) since getModels() only parses text
and calls ::make(); decide whether the test needs the model to
interact with a table or whether checking getModels() is enough.
- [ ] Explore replacing the regexes with plain Laravel Str calls (e.g.
normalize line endings, then after()/before()/explode()) if that
can handle class modifiers and CRLF while staying simpler.

Only the final modifier needs to be matched: abstract classes can't be
instantiated (so they're skipped anyway), and readonly classes can't
extend the non-readonly Model class.
FinalPost and its test are replaced by a test that writes model files
with a final class declaration and CRLF line endings to a temp directory
at test time, so editors and git can't normalize the line endings.
The dataset covers the class name being followed by a space as well as
by a line break. The original parsing took everything up to "\n" after
"class " and split it on spaces, so with CRLF line endings and the brace
on its own line (`class Post\r\n{`), the class name kept a trailing \r.

Parsing the class and namespace declarations from tokens instead of regexes handles any whitespace, braces directly after the class name, and class modifiers, and it ignores comments. Requiring a name after the class keyword skips Foo::class (e.g. in attributes above the class) and anonymous classes. The regexes missed models in braced namespaces and models with an attribute or docblock on the same line as the class declaration. They also picked up the wrong class when a docblock line started with "class". The model discovery test's dataset now covers these cases. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Model discovery used to call ::make() on every class found in the model directories and then filter out the non-models, so any non-model class with a static make() method had it executed. Abstract classes threw and were skipped by a catch-all. Abstract classes are now skipped while parsing the declaration, and classes are filtered by name (is_a() and the excluded models) before being instantiated, so only concrete, non-excluded models are created. only rejects the candidate when the modifier belongs to a class declaration; do

allowing discovery to continue with remaining candidates.

TraitRLSManager::getModels()parsed model files by looking for"\nclass ", so it silently skipped models whose declaration didn't match that exact formatting. The most common case wasfinal class Post. Skipped models got no RLS policy. The class and namespace declarations are now read with PHP's tokenizer (
PhpToken) instead of string matching. This handles:final)class Post{)Comments are ignored, and requiring a name after the
classkeyword skipsFoo::classand anonymous classes.ext-tokenizeris already required bylaravel/framework.Discovery also no longer calls
::make()on every class in the model directories. Classes are now filtered by name first (abstract classes,is_a($class, Model::class, true), and$excludedModels), so only concrete, non-excluded models are instantiated. Previously, a non-model class with a staticmake()method would have had it executed.Tests
trait rls manager discovers models regardless of how their file is formatted. It writes model files with CRLF line endings at test time, so editors and git can't normalize them, and covers the formatting cases above.correct rls policies get created with the correct hash using trait manager,->unique()now comes before->values(). In the old order, models sharing a table left gaps in the array keys and broke the comparison. The old order only broke things in an earlier commit in this PR, doesn't cause problems now, but the new order is more correct and prevents issues in case we make some changes in the future.Summary by CodeRabbit
