[4.x] Add terminateTenancy, replace tenant instance when reinitializing - #1513
Conversation
Add two opt-in static properties on IdentificationMiddleware, mainly for HTTP and browser tests, where requests reuse the test's container: - $forceReset ends tenancy before identifying the tenant, so tenant() is re-resolved on each request instead of keeping the instance (and stale loaded relations) from a previous request. - $terminateTenancy ends tenancy once the request has been handled, so tests don't stay in the tenant context after making a request. InitializeTenancyByDomainOrSubdomain doesn't use initializeTenancy(), so it handles both flags inline. Also add regression tests, currently failing, for forceReset not applying to central routes skipped by kernel identification, and for terminateTenancy not ending tenancy when an exception propagates out of the request (e.g. with withoutExceptionHandling()). forceReset only exists to drop a stale instance of the same tenant before re-identifying it, so it isn't supposed to do anything for central routes, which don't initialize a tenant. The failing test expecting it to end tenancy before a central route skipped by kernel identification tested behavior forceReset isn't meant to have. Making sure requests to central routes start clean is terminateTenancy's job. The tenant request that initialized tenancy ends it. Repurpose the test to cover that with kernel identification. Exceptions are normally rendered into a response inside $next(), so the end() call after it runs. With withoutExceptionHandling(), the exception propagates through the identification middleware instead, skipping end() and leaving the test in the tenant context. Kernel::terminate() isn't called in that case either, so terminable middleware wouldn't help. Wrap $next() in try/finally in IdentificationMiddleware::initializeTenancy() and InitializeTenancyByDomainOrSubdomain::handle(), and remove the "Currently fails" comment from the regression test. initialize() was a noop when the given tenant matched tenant(), so the instance from the first initialization was kept, along with stale attributes and loaded relations. This was mostly visible in HTTP tests, where requests reuse the container. Now initialize() swaps in the given instance without ending tenancy or running bootstrappers again. State set up by bootstrappers from the tenant's attributes is not refreshed; reinitialize() is for that. This makes IdentificationMiddleware::$forceReset unnecessary, so remove it. Two changes mainly aimed at HTTP and browser tests, where requests reuse the test's container.
IdentificationMiddleware::$terminateTenancyNew opt-in static property. When enabled, tenancy is ended once the request has been handled, so tests don't stay in the tenant context after making a request to a tenant route.
$next()is wrapped intry/finally, so tenancy is also ended when an exception propagates out of the request (e.g. withwithoutExceptionHandling()).InitializeTenancyByDomainOrSubdomaindoesn't useinitializeTenancy(), so it handles the flag inline.Tenancy::initialize()replaces the tenant instance for the current tenantinitialize()was a noop when the given tenant matchedtenant(), so the instance from the first initialization was kept, along with stale attributes and loaded relations (e.g. a domain added between two requests in a test wouldn't show up intenant()->domains).Now
initialize()swaps in the given instance without ending tenancy or running bootstrappers again. State set up by bootstrappers from the tenant's attributes isn't refreshed;reinitialize()is for that.Tenancy is ended as soon as the request leaves the identification middleware. Anything that runs after that runs in the central context. That might include streamed response callbacks (
streamDownload(),eventStream(),StreamedJsonResponse),defer()callbacks, terminable middleware andapp()->terminating()callbacks.This replaces the
$forceResetflag from an earlier version of this PR, which ended tenancy before identification to get the same effect but crucially involved callingend()which doesn't work great in some testing setups and wouldn't handle potential other cases where reinitialization is used without identification middleware.Summary by CodeRabbit
