CODAP-1382

Fix graph labels that can be obscured by the bottom-right resize handle.

  • Reserve 10 px of bottom clearance when a graph has a legend or numeric x-axis. Categorical graphs without a legend use the full height.
  • Keep axis scale lengths in sync when the plot height changes, including when code changes a scale type directly.
  • Preserve a zero-height plot in scale calculations for very short tiles.
  • Add browser checks for label clearance and conditional spacing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved graph spacing so numeric axes and legends retain clearance from the plot edge and resize controls.
    • Prevented graph plot dimensions from becoming negative on short tiles.
    • Updated scale sizing when switching between numeric and categorical axes.
    • Aligned the plot background with the app’s background color.
    • Corrected numeric axis ticks after undoing a split-axis change.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for graph spacing, resizing, axis changes, short-tile layouts, and split-axis undo.

Walkthrough

Graph layout now reserves bottom clearance for numeric axes or legends, clamps plot dimensions at zero, and updates scale ranges when plot height changes. Rendering adjustments and tests cover legend placement, numeric-axis spacing, categorical-axis alignment, and resize-handle clearance.

Changes: Graph bottom clearance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Layout clearance and scale updates
v3/src/components/graph/models/graph-layout.ts, v3/src/components/graph/models/graph-layout.test.ts
GraphLayout reserves 10px below a numeric bottom axis or legend. Plot dimensions are clamped at zero, legend placement uses the reduced usable height, and scale ranges refresh when plot height changes. Tests cover scale changes and short tiles.
Rendered clearance checks
v3/src/components/graph/components/graph.scss, v3/src/components/graph/components/graph.tsx, v3/cypress/e2e/graph-resize-clearance.spec.ts
The plot uses the configured background fill, and the renderer type indicator offset uses the legend top position. Cypress tests check numeric and categorical axis clearance and resize-handle overlap.

What changed in this PR

This PR prevents CODAP v3 graph labels from overlapping the bottom-right resize graphic while preserving full-height layouts for categorical axes without legends.

Changes:

  • Adds conditional 10 px bottom clearance and adjusts the graph background and debug indicator positioning.
  • Keeps vertical scale lengths synchronized with plot height changes and preserves zero-height plots in very short tiles.
  • Adds unit and browser checks for clearance, conditional spacing, and scale updates.
File Description
v3/src/components/graph/models/graph-layout.ts Adds conditional clearance, scale synchronization, and zero-height handling.
v3/src/components/graph/models/graph-layout.test.ts Tests spacing, scale-type changes, and very short tiles.
v3/src/components/graph/components/graph.tsx Positions the debug renderer indicator above the inset legend.
v3/src/components/graph/components/graph.scss Applies the graph background color across the clearance area.
v3/cypress/e2e/graph-resize-clearance.spec.ts Checks label clearance after resizing and numeric versus categorical spacing.

39-49: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a tick-label clearance check to the numeric-axis test. Do not reuse expectClearOfResizeGraphic for it.

The numeric-axis case checks only the spacing between the plot and .axis-wrapper.bottom .axis-background (lines 42-48). The bottom tick text is only asserted to exist (line 41). A change that moves a bottom tick label into the resize handle, while keeping the 10px background spacing, passes this test.

expectClearOfResizeGraphic cannot be applied to the bottom tick label as written. It requires the label to overlap the handle horizontally (lines 19-20). A tick label that is already clear of the handle fails that requirement, even though it is not obscured. The check should apply only when the label overlaps the handle.

Suggested fix
     graph.getGraphTile().find("[data-testid=axis-bottom] .tick text").last().should("exist")
+    graph.getGraphTile().find("[data-testid=axis-bottom] .tick text").last().then($tick => {
+      const tickBounds = $tick[0].getBoundingClientRect()
+      graph.getGraphTile().parent().find(".component-resize-handle").then($handle => {
+        const handleBounds = $handle[0].getBoundingClientRect()
+ // Only a label that overlaps the handle horizontally can be obscured by its painted corner.
+        if (tickBounds.left < handleBounds.right && tickBounds.right > handleBounds.left) {
+          const overlap = Math.min(tickBounds.right, handleBounds.right) - handleBounds.left
+          expect(tickBounds.bottom, "axis-bottom tick bottom").to.be.lessThan(handleBounds.bottom - overlap + 2)
+        }
+      })
+    })
     graph.getGraphTile().find(".graph-plot").then($plot => {

This check leaves the existing legend assertions in expectClearOfResizeGraphic unchanged. It fails only when a bottom tick label overlaps the handle and sits below the painted corner limit.
