`maxDiffPixelRatio` is a *ratio*: a 10,000px-tall capture absorbs several times more real regression before
it trips than a 2,000px one.
- **The header has its own baseline and an overflow sweep.** `/` alone let a nav-link change pass, since the header
is a small share of a ~3200px capture. `site-header` captures `#header` at the pinned date, which shows both CTAs.
The sweep resizes from 320 to 1600px (every 8px, plus each Panda breakpoint exactly) in every state in
`HEADER_DATE_STATES` (`e2e/routes.ts`, fork-owned), once per engine, and fails if the page scrolls horizontally.
It also names the element that sticks out. Its first run found two overflows already on `main`: the mobile header

can't shrink below its content; use `minmax(0, 1fr)`).
- **Masking is deliberately unused.** `VISUAL_MASK_SELECTORS` exists but is empty. Masking paints a solid
block over a region, so it only suits something small and genuinely non-deterministic (a live clock, a
random avatar). It was briefly applied to sponsor logo grids and turned the largest, most content-rich part

title: "DDD Perth 2017 Call For Presentations"

summary: "The DDD Perth 2017 call for presentations is open, with changes aimed at a more diverse line-up of speakers after 2016 drew no submissions from women."

I’m pleased to announce the opening of the DDD Perth 2017 Call For Presentations. I’m particularly excited this year because we’ve spend a fair bit of time and effort to make a few key changes that I’m hopeful will positively influence the diversity of speakers we have in this year’s conference.

I was really sad last year when we didn’t get a single presentation submission from a woman presenter. When I introduced DDD Perth 2016, I had a [slide about Women in IT](https://twitter.com/msandfor/status/769341631937978372) and I promised the attendees that we would try and do better next year. Thankfully, the committee wholeheartedly agreed when we far and away voted improved speaker and attendee diversity as our #1 item for improvement this year.

To that end there has been a range of measures we’ve been putting in place to try and improve diversity this year, not the least of which was the [abstract writing workshop](https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ddd-perth-2017-speaker-abstract-writing-workshop-registration-34102050150#) we [held](https://twitter.com/DDDPerth/status/868294500388438016) [this](https://twitter.com/DDDPerth/status/868328934076698624) [weekend](https://twitter.com/msandfor/status/868349328686850048) to try and help less experienced speakers come up with talk ideas and write great abstracts around them. *2017 DDD Perth Abstract Writing Workshop*

## Come on spill the beans… What are these changes you mentioned above!

So we’ve made a few changes to the [CFP](https://dddperth.com/submit-a-session) this year and the voting process that selects the talks:

1. We’ve explicitly called out that we aren’t just looking for **developers** to speak; we’ve removed the “by developers, for developers” tagline of the conference and instead are just focusing on the software industry as a whole. This isn’t anything new, more a recognition of what was already there and we’ve listed out the huge variety of talks we already have seen in previous DDD Perth conferences to drive that home.
1. **The big one:** We are doing anonymous session voting this year! That means, when it come to voting time you will only see the title, abstract and audience notes for each talk and not the presenter name(s)! We are hoping that this helps to not only remove conscious and unconscious bias from the voting, but also encourages more diverse submissions by removing an element of fear around the voting process.
1. We are providing confidential one-on-one mentoring by an experienced speaker for anyone that requests it. We’ve supplied an email address to contact on the CFP page.
1. We’ve introduced a half-sized session option (15 minutes of speaking rather than 40 minutes) which we hope is less scary for first-time or less experienced speakers.
1. We’ve made it explicit that you don’t have to present by yourself; you can co-present (something I personally love doing and have done in the majority of my public talks in recent years) or present as a group/team. Again, we hope this is less scary for first-time or less experienced speakers.

We’ve implemented these measures after much research and discussion both within the committee and with prominent groups and people in the community that have credentials around diversity in the tech industry.

It’s my sincere hope that these measures will help to improve the diversity of speaker submissions and actual speakers in DDD Perth 2017. If not then we will keep trying next year with different experiments to see if we can start to move the dial and have an important impact in the industry.

## Get on it!

As I said above, super excited to see the session submissions start rolling in! Let’s make this year another great conference. [CFP closes on 1 July 2017](https://dddperth.com/submit-a-session).

title: "Why you should present at DDD Perth"
date: 2017-06-22
authors:
- Aidan Morgan
summary: "Six reasons to submit a talk, from gaining presenting experience to growing your network, and why anonymous voting gives first-time speakers the same chance as anyone."
legacyPaths:

One of the best things about DDD Perth is that it provides a forum for people who have never presented at a conference before to have a chance to speak. The anonymous voting process used by DDD Perth ensures that everyone that submits a presentation abstract has the same chance of being selected to present.

So, if you’re on the fence about presenting at DDD Perth, here are a few reasons why it’s a good idea:

## 1\. Gain presenting experience

Invariably as you move through your career you will be called upon to present your ideas to potential customers, fellow team mates or as part of a marketing exercise. Presenting at DDD Perth gives you an opportunity to gain some experience presenting something to a large group in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

## 2\. Further your understanding

After you’ve written your abstract and it’s been selected for the conference you’re going to spend time preparing your presentation. This means spending time to dive really deep into the topic you’re presenting to make sure that you really understand it and can teach other people about it. This works as a great motivator for something you’ve always been passionate about, but never committed the time to “dive deep” into.

## 3\. Expand your network

When you present on a topic at DDD Perth you’re demonstrating your keen interest in a particular topic. Attendees that are also interested in the same topic may ask questions during the Q&A period, or catch you in between talks or at the after party to have a more in-depth discussion.

This is a great chance for you to meet other people in the local community who are interested in the same things as you — who knows, you might make a new friend or find your next job!

## 4\. New opportunities

DDD Perth attracts a very diverse group of people! You never know; your future co-founder might be watching. Conversely being able to list the presentations you’ve given at conferences might be the edge you need when applying for that promotion you’ve been wanting!

## 5\. Marketing

Every presentation starts with a short bio about the presenter, use this to get the word out about the interesting problems you’re solving as part of your job. This gets exposure for your organisation helping fill those vacant positions that you’ve been trying to fill. Even better if you can claim a finder’s fee!

## 6\. Build a Personal Brand

By presenting on a particular subject you can start to build a personal brand in that subject. A great local example of that can be found in one of our organisers, Jake Ginnivan, who is very effective at building a personal brand by speaking at conferences and user groups. If you are interested in building a personal brand then we highly encourage you to talk to the likes of Jake at the conference.

The reasons people present at DDD Perth are as many and diverse as the attendees. If you’re a first-time presenter the DDD Perth team is willing to help you prepare your abstract and provide constructive feedback on your presentation before the day, so really — you’ve got nothing to lose! Head on over to the DDD Perth website to find out more information, and while you’re there grab a ticket: [https://dddperth.com/](https://dddperth.com/).

![Raspberry Pi anyone?](/images/blog/2017-06-28-what-does-ddd-stand-for/01.jpeg)

*Raspberry Pi anyone?*

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge fan of conferences. I love the opportunity to learn stuff on a wide range of topics all in one day. I love meeting industry celebrities — last year [@DDDPerth](https://twitter.com/dddperth) I met Lars Klint IRL and nearly fainted from the excitement *\<yes I am that nerdy\>*.

I like sipping coffee and taking selfies in a crowd of people so excited about Tech that they gave up their weekend and abandoned their families to be there.

## Last year was the first year I had attended DDDPerth and I was a little nervous. I thought maybe it would be all Developer and I would be a bit out of my depth. **But if it was too deep for me, I certainly didn’t notice.**

I loved watching [@AbstractCode](https://twitter.com/AbstractCode) being declarative about “The One True Architecture” and [@larsklint](https://twitter.com/larsklint) did “The Force Awakens” as his locknote — which was so honest and revealing, I was astounded that he could stand in front of a room of so many developers and lay bare so much of his soul. What was more startling was the way they responded in the Q&A afterwards. Everyone let down their own barriers and shared their own tips and tricks for surviving life. I don’t think I have ever been quite so moved by a conference — and I have never felt as much at home as I did there.

![Tech God Lars Klint at some other conference](/images/blog/2017-06-28-what-does-ddd-stand-for/02.jpeg)

*Tech God Lars Klint at some other conference*

I won a Raspberry Pi from [@paul\_\_usher](https://twitter.com/paul__usher) which reminds me, I must ask [@robdmoore](https://twitter.com/robdmoore) to ensure there are some actual Raspberry Pie’s on the menu. I was craving them all day as a result of the sessions showing how to control a robot *\<poor robot suffered a horrendous accident in front of 80 witnesses\>* and how to keep your data safe from the Government.

In 2017 the plan is to make the Conference twice the size and have an even more diverse range of topics. **It’s no longer something by Developers for Developers *\<Developer Developer Developer\>*— it’s for everyone who loves Tech, and all that is associated with it.**

But code will always remain at its core — and I love the idea that there will be the depth and breadth to interest everyone and anyone at [@DDDPerth](https://twitter.com/DDDPerth). I already found it so epic last year — and this year will be twice as epic!

See you all there?
