Change

Part of #1962, item 4 ("Each growth of the log is hashed twice"). The other three items stay open.

Before, each growth of a Muse log read and hashed 16 MiB twice with SHA-256 (transcriptGeneration in server/conversation.ts):

  1. the window read before, to check it for a rewrite;
  2. the new window, to keep for the next check.

Now one read from the old window's start does both. It uses the helpers that command transcripts already use (windowStart, chunkDigests, sameOverlap):

  • The window starts at the 64 KiB chunk boundary at or before the last 16 MiB, so it covers the whole newest page. Each chunk gets one xxHash3 digest.
  • The digests of the old window's chunks check it. Only the last old chunk is digested again, as far as the old read went (at most 64 KiB).
  • The digests inside the new window are kept for the next check.

A log read while empty keeps no window, because it has no bytes to check.

A log that grows by more than the whole window between two reads shares no bytes with the old window. It now starts a new history, the same as a rewrite, instead of a read of both windows. This is the safe direction: the client reads the conversation again.

Cost on this Mac, for 16 MiB: SHA-256 about 5.5 ms, xxHash3 in 64 KiB chunks about 0.5 ms. So each growth goes from about 11 ms of hashing to about 0.5 ms, plus one read instead of two.

The read is one buffer of the window and the growth: about 16 MiB, at most 32 MiB plus 128 KiB. The Muse page reader already reads a 16 MiB window, and command transcripts read theirs the same way.

Validation

  • server/muse.test.ts: 25 pass. Four tests are new:
    • An append digests each byte of the window once: a spy on Bun.hash.xxHash3 counts the bytes digested. The count is at least the log's size and at most the log's size plus 64 KiB.
    • A rewrite before the first chunk boundary of the newest page: a prompt changed there, plus an append, gives a new history and the new text.
    • A log read while empty: its first append keeps the history.
    • A log past one window: the log grows past 16 MiB, so it starts a new history. Appends that slide the window past a chunk keep the history. A name changed at the start of the old window, which the next append slides past, starts a new history.
  • Each of these changes to the new code fails a test: no rewrite for a growth past the window, no overlap check, digesting twice, no offset on the kept digests, a window kept for an empty log, a read of the new window only, and a window start aligned up instead of down.
  • The Muse case of server/api.contract.test.ts passes in an isolated herdr session.
  • Typecheck passes.
  • bun run check fast: the same 13 tests fail on unchanged main on this headless Mac (scripts/check, ci-browser ×4, install-star, self-hosted-runner, claude-store, session-history, remote-entry, agy, core/composer-framing, portal under load). None of them reads Muse logs.
  • docs/muse-chat.md describes the check and the growth past the window. The changelog fragment is changelog.d/muse-window-digest.md.
  • Live test with Muse Code 1.4.13 (muse-spark-1.2) on b6e3b06. Muse ran in an isolated herdr session, against a test Ovis server on loopback with a Muse store of its own:
    • The first prompt ran cat notes.txt and a failing ls missing-folder. Chat showed the prompt, both tool calls (the failed one as an error) and the final answer. The tool-output endpoint returned the whole output of each call.
    • A second prompt appended a line to the file. Across both prompts the log grew from 21 to 369 records, and the history ID stayed the same.
    • After the second prompt, Chat's turns were equal to a cold parseMuseTranscript of the same log: 4 turns with the same parts.

Each growth of a Muse log hashed the 16 MiB window read before with
SHA-256 to check it for a rewrite, then hashed the new window again.
Now one read from the old window's start does both: xxHash3 digests of
its 64 KiB chunks check the old window (sameOverlap) and are kept for the
new one, as command transcripts already do. A log that grows by more than
the whole window between two reads shares no bytes with it, so it starts
a new history instead of reading both.

Part of devswha#1962 (hashing cost).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Muse chat now preserves conversation history when logs grow normally, including when a log fills or moves beyond the recent 16 MiB window.
    • Changes to previously checked content, unreadable log data, or growth exceeding 16 MiB between checks start a new conversation history.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the Muse chat guide with details on how log growth and changes affect conversation history.

Muse transcript rewrite detection now compares overlapping portions of a growing session log with 64 KiB chunk digests. Missing or changed overlap, or growth beyond the 16 MiB window, starts a new history. Tests and documentation cover append and window-boundary behavior.

Comment thread server/conversation.ts Resolved
A Muse log read while empty kept a window that ended at 0. Its first
append then counted as a growth past the whole window and started a new
history. An empty log has no bytes to check, so it keeps no window.

Verified at b6e3b06, rebased locally onto current main without conflicts. server/muse.test.ts passes 24/24 and bun run check fast passes (7,432 pass / 0 fail / 24 skip). Putting main's SHA-256 window back makes the new window-growth test fail, and the empty-log case from CodeRabbit's thread is covered.

One optional follow-up, not blocking: "an append digests each byte of the window once" only spies on Bun.hash.xxHash3 and checks an upper bound, so it also passes on main's SHA-256 code, where xxHash3 is never called. Asserting that the spy saw some bytes would make it catch a return to double hashing. Thanks, @jpcarranza94.

Thanks @jpcarranza94. Focused tests pass, the unit suite passes on top of main (7426/0), and the new window test fails without the change. The merge-pass gate reproduced one correctness problem:

  • A rewrite in the unaligned start of the 16 MiB window goes unnoticed (server/conversation.ts:181-190). Chunk alignment leaves the leading part of the displayed window out of rewrite detection. Change a prompt in that part and append a record: the history id stays the same and the cached, stale text is returned, while a cold read returns the changed text. Main detects the same rewrite. Please include the unaligned prefix in the check, and add a regression for that case.

(No changelog credit is needed in the fragment. A maintainer adds it at release.)

The digest window started at the first 64 KiB boundary inside the last
16 MiB, so the part of the newest page before it was not checked: a
prompt changed there, plus an append, kept the history id and the stale
turn. The window now starts at the boundary at or before the last 16 MiB,
which covers every byte that main's SHA-256 check covered.

The append test also asserts that every byte of the window is digested,
so it fails on main's SHA-256 code. The growth-past-the-window test grows
by one more chunk, since the window can now start up to 64 KiB earlier.

Thanks. Both points are in 9361841.

Unaligned start of the window: the digest window now starts at the 64 KiB boundary at or before the last 16 MiB (server/conversation.ts:181), not the first boundary inside it. The newest page never starts before length - TRANSCRIPT_WINDOW_BYTES (newestPage, and pageBefore without widening), so every byte of it is checked again, the same bytes main's SHA-256 covered. The read grows by at most 64 KiB.

New regression, "a rewrite before the first chunk boundary of the newest page is seen": the last 16 MiB start one byte past a chunk boundary and 2,000 bytes before the first prompt. The test changes that prompt in place and appends a record. The history id changes, the page shows the new text, and a cold read gives the same turns. With the old alignment the test fails.

Optional note on the append test: it now also asserts that the spy saw at least the log's size, so it fails on main's SHA-256 code. The growth-past-the-window test grows by one more chunk, because the window can now start up to 64 KiB earlier.

Checks:

  • server/muse.test.ts: 25 pass. Each of seven changes to the new code fails a test (the old alignment included). On this branch's base code (SHA-256), the append test and the window-growth test fail.
  • Typecheck passes.
  • bun run check fast on this headless Mac: the same unrelated tests fail as on unchanged main. shell-agent fails only under load and passes alone.
  • docs/muse-chat.md names the boundary.

Merge pass review report. Overall: PASSED. This outside contribution from @jpcarranza94 digests a growing Muse log once and caches the 16 MiB window it shows. The maintainer approved the merge, and the gate (omo-native-gate-reviewer, gpt-6-astra) passed it.

First gate round (REJECT): chunk alignment left the start of the 16 MiB window out of rewrite detection. When a prompt changed there and a record was then appended, the cache returned the old text.

Fix 9361841, re-reviewed on that range only (APPROVE):

  • The B1 reproduction now changes the history id, and the turns it returns match a cold read.
  • The log is still digested once. On a 134,657,254-byte log, one append hashes 16,870,421 bytes after the fix against 16,804,885 before it: exactly 64 KiB more, not the whole log.
  • The new regression fails with only the production fix reverted.
  • Merged locally with origin/main 13272d0: typecheck and the 25 Muse tests pass, and the unit suite passes 7524/0.

A maintainer adds the changelog credit when the release folds the fragments (changelog.d/README.md).

## Change

Part of #1962, item 3 ("Allow-list coverage"). Items 1 and 2 stay open.
Item 4 was done in #2027.

The item said that fork records, subagent records and non-text prompt
blocks had no fixture, so a valid record missing from the lists would
send the pane to Terminal. I recorded those sessions with Muse Code
1.4.13, and a real fork did fall back to Terminal.

**Fix:** Muse 1.4.13 writes `runtime.model_selection.initialized` and
`runtime.reasoning_effort_reconfigure` into the log of a session that
`/fork` starts. The 160 logs the allow-list came from do not have them
(I scanned the same store again, now 163 logs: no other name is
missing). Both records are bookkeeping, and the reader now knows them.
Without them, Chat for a forked pane showed Terminal.

**New recording**
(`server/fixtures/muse/recorded-1.4.13-{main,fork,side,rewind}.jsonl`):
four `session.jsonl` logs that Muse 1.4.13 wrote in an isolated herdr
session, a temporary data directory and a throwaway folder:
- **main:** a picture attached with `--image` (an `asset` block), a file
mention picked with `@shed.txt`, and one subagent (`subagent_spawn`,
`subagent_wait` and 11 `subagent.control.*` records). It also holds the
command records of `/fork`, `/side` and `/rewind`.
- **fork:** the session that `/fork` opened in a new tab, with one more
prompt.
- **side:** a `/side` question.
- **rewind:** `/rewind` to the second prompt, sent again with more
words.

Records, keys and key order are as Muse wrote them. The fixture README
says what was replaced. The redaction is the same as for the first
recording, plus the data directory, the user name in `ls -l` output, and
the `developer` messages that a fork copies into
`session.fork.model_prefix`, which hold Muse's instructions and the
user's context. 257 of 1178 lines changed.

The recordings cover 78 of the 124 record, session-kind and run-event
names. Before, they covered 52. The names still without a recording are
mostly workflow, goal, todo, compaction and `user_shell` records.

**What the recordings show,** now in `docs/muse-chat.md` under Limits:
- A file mention is not a separate block. Muse sends `@shed.txt` as the
words `shed.txt`.
- A subagent shows as its `subagent_spawn` and `subagent_wait` calls.
- `/rewind` opens a new session. Its Chat shows the kept prompt without
its answer: Muse writes the prompt again, but keeps the answer only as a
`session.fork.turn` record. The old docs said only that `/rewind` was
not handled.
- After `/side`, the pane uses Terminal until Muse exits. The side
session takes a lock for the same process and does not end its log, so
the existing rule for two live sessions applies. The side question is in
`session.side.started`, which is not read.

I did not change the behavior for any of these. Showing the
`session.fork.turn` history of a fork or a rewind, and following a side
chat, are possible follow-ups if you want them.

## Validation

- `server/muse.test.ts`: 26 pass. The new test reads the four recordings
and checks the turns of each, and reads the fork through
`transcriptPage`. It fails when either new name is taken out of the
list.
- The Muse case of `server/api.contract.test.ts` passes in an isolated
herdr session.
- Typecheck and build pass.
- `bun run check fast`: the same unit test files fail on unchanged
`main` on this headless Mac (`scripts/check`, `ci-browser`,
`install-star`, `self-hosted-runner`, `claude-store`, `session-history`,
`remote-entry`, `core/composer-framing`, `shell-agent` under load). None
of them reads Muse logs.
- **Live check:** while recording, a test Ovis server on loopback read
the same Muse store. The main pane showed Chat with all three prompts,
the picture prompt, the file mention and the subagent calls. The fork's
pane showed Terminal before this fix.
- The changelog fragment is `changelog.d/muse-fork-records.md`.

## Release 0.4.19

The release PR, made by the steps in
[docs/development.md#releasing](docs/development.md#releasing), on main
9d76cca (#2078):

- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.19 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.19` moved the
`changelog.d` fragments of 54 PRs into CHANGELOG.md, with PR links, and
deleted them.

- **Release summaries:** `release-summaries.json` has the 0.4.19 entry
in en, ko, ja and zh, with the same lists in each: 5 new, 5 improved, 5
fixed. Every English line is at most 70 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` goes from 37 to 38 in
`shared/machines.ts`, because the remote bundle's inputs changed since
`remote-v37`. Once this merges, `remote-v38` is pushed on the merge
commit, and the Remote PC bundles workflow has to finish before the
Release run.

`bun scripts/release-guards.ts` reports: "Release 0.4.19: remote bundle,
telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order." No telemetry Worker
deploy is needed. `bun run check fast` passes locally.

**Not checked on a real Windows PC:** #1989 (Git for Windows' OpenSSH
for remote PCs) and #2016 (Antigravity chat on Windows through the
Restart Manager) ship without their real-device Windows checks, because
the maintainer's Windows test PC is off. The owner accepted releasing
without them. Both will be checked on the real PC when it is back.
