Change

Closes #2173. I filed the issue a moment ago and took the liberty to start the work before a maintainer's yes, so that you can see the change. If you do not want the feature, close the PR.

In Claude Code, a message that starts with ! runs a shell command (bash mode). Claude Code records it as two user entries, <bash-input>…</bash-input> and then <bash-stdout>…</bash-stdout><bash-stderr>…</bash-stderr>. Chat showed both as raw tags in two user bubbles.

  • Parser (server/claude-transcript.ts): an entry that is the whole <bash-input> string opens a user turn with a new shell part (command). The output entry after it sets that part's stdout and stderr. It reuses the stream reader of the slash-command notice (now taggedStreams), so the same rules apply: the whole entry must be the tags, terminal controls are stripped, and each stream is cut at 4000 characters. A bash stream keeps its leading whitespace, so an indented first line stays indented. A tag quoted inside a prompt stays text. An output with no command before it is left out.
  • Pages: the output entry opens no turn (isCommandEntry), so a page never starts between a command and its output. The command opens a turn through pushPrompt, as turnStarts counts it.
  • Chat (ChatView.tsx): the command in the user's seat with a terminal icon, then stdout and stderr in the existing tool-output box. The output of a failed command is red: in 37 recorded commands (Claude Code 2.1.91 to 2.1.309), Claude Code wrote one stream only, and the 11 stderr ones were failed commands. A command whose output is not recorded yet shows the command only.
  • Outcome chip: a command sent from Chat as !echo "Hello" matches its shell turn, so it does not also stay as a sent row. The minimap preview reads !command too.

Protocol: ConversationPart gains { kind: "shell"; command; stdout?; stderr? }. An older client draws such a turn as an empty user row with its time.

Out of scope: Muse writes the same thing as user_shell.command and user_shell.result (now skipped as bookkeeping), and Codex has its own ! commands. Each can follow in its own PR.

Validation

  • server/conversation.test.ts: two commands (stdout, then a failed one with a colored stderr), a command without output, a prompt that quotes the tags, an output with no command, and turnStarts counting the command but not its output. It fails when <bash-std is taken out of isCommandEntry.
  • server/api.contract.test.ts: GET /api/pane/conversation answers a Claude transcript's commands as shell parts, with stdout, with only stderr, and without either field while the output is not recorded. It passes in an isolated herdr session.
  • src/lib/outcomeChip.test.ts: a ! send takes its chip from the shell turn (fails without the turnText change). src/components/ChatTurn.test.ts: the card's markup, and no empty output box.
  • Live check: an isolated herdr session ran Claude Code 2.1.309 in a test folder, with a test Ovis server on loopback and headless Chromium. From the Chat composer I sent !echo "Hello" and !ls missing-folder shed.txt. Chat showed two shell cards, no raw tags and no extra sent row, on desktop and at phone width. Claude Code 2.1.309 answered each command with a short model turn, which Chat shows as usual.
  • Typecheck and build pass. bun run check fast: the same unit test files fail on unchanged main on this headless Mac (scripts/check, ci-browser, install-star, self-hosted-runner, remote-entry, core/composer-framing, session-history, shell-agent). None of them reads a transcript or draws a chat turn.
  • Changelog fragment: changelog.d/claude-bash-mode.md.

…shell card

Claude Code records a `!` command as a `<bash-input>` entry and its output as
a `<bash-stdout>`/`<bash-stderr>` entry. Chat showed both as raw tags in two
user bubbles. The parser now reads the pair into one `shell` part, the output
entry opens no turn (so a page never splits a command from its output), and
Chat draws the command with its output, a failed command's output in red.
A command sent from Chat as `!…` takes its outcome chip from that turn.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Chat now displays bash-mode commands and their output together in a terminal-style card. Commands appear with a ! prompt, and recorded standard output and errors are shown when available.
    • Failed-command output is highlighted in red. Related outcome indicators appear alongside the command.
    • Bash-mode commands are also included in chat turn previews and summaries.

Claude bash-mode transcript entries are parsed into shell conversation parts. Chat displays each command with its recorded output and includes shell commands in turn previews and command-outcome matching.

Changes: Claude bash-mode transcript and shell-part display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse bash records into shell parts
shared/protocol.ts, server/claude-transcript.ts, server/conversation.test.ts, changelog.d/claude-bash-mode.md
The conversation protocol adds a shell part. The Claude transcript parser recognizes wrapped bash commands and parses bash streams for command output. Tests cover pairing, missing output, literal tags, and terminal-control stripping.
Render shell commands in Chat
src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/components/ChatView.css, src/components/ChatTurn.test.ts
Chat renders the command and nonempty stdout or stderr in a user turn. Stderr uses the blocked-status color. The turn can include its time and outcome chip.
Include shell commands in turn matching and previews
src/lib/outcomeChip.ts, src/lib/outcomeChip.test.ts, src/lib/chatMinimap.ts
Shell commands are prefixed with ! when included in turn text for outcome matching and in minimap previews.

Explanation

Issue #2173 coding requirements are covered. The parser recognizes whole-entry Claude Code <bash-input> and paired stdout/stderr tags, preserves quoted tags as text, strips terminal controls, caps output, and omits unmatched output. The shell part keeps the command when output is absent. The output does not start a separate turn. The protocol and Chat changes render one user-seat shell card with a terminal command, separate stderr styling, existing output behavior, and outcome/minimap matching. The supplied tests cover parsing, turn counts, card markup, empty output, and outcome chips. The changelog fragment is present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2173. The parser, protocol, Chat rendering, minimap and outcome matching changes directly support Claude Code bash-mode shell cards. The added tests and changelog support that feature. No change expands the feature to Muse user_shell.* records or Codex ! commands, which the issue excludes.

Explanation

The description includes the required Change and Validation sections. It explains the problem, resulting behavior, scope, tests, live checks, known unrelated failures, and changelog entry. It links issue #2173, although it notes that maintainer approval was not yet given.

…nd cover the shell part over HTTP

A prompt that only starts with `<bash-std` stays a prompt: isCommandEntry now
takes bash output by the same whole-entry rule the reader uses. An output keeps
its first line's indent; only its blank end goes (the slash-command notice
still trims). A contract test reads the shell part from GET
/api/pane/conversation, with and without recorded streams.

…err boundary

When bash output holds more than one `</bash-stdout><bash-stderr>` boundary (a command printed the tags), no reading of the streams is certain. Keep the whole inner text verbatim as stdout and show no stderr, so no stream is fabricated and no text is lost. One parser serves both paths. Adds the merge pass reviewers' cases and a seeded property test.

Owner

Merging cc0ffb0, an external feature from @jpcarranza94, on the owner's go relayed by Dori. Thank you! The merge pass's strict external review found two MEDIUMs on 6f026dd. Bash mode was recognised without checking provenance, so a person's prompt could be hidden or turned into a card. Literal stream tags printed in output split it into fake streams. The merge pass fixed both on the branch in cc0ffb0, using the same provenance rule as #2072 and parsing only the outer stream envelope, with ten regression tests that fail on 6f026dd. Later rounds showed that no boundary guess is safe when a command prints the stream tags itself. 390c2ba therefore splits stdout from stderr only at a single unambiguous boundary. With more than one boundary, it shows the whole output verbatim as stdout, so no stream is made up and no text is lost. A seeded property test and every reviewer reproduction cover this. bun run check fast passes. omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex both pass this head, with no supply-chain or safety concern. The required checks are green, and CodeRabbit did not review this head. The LOW notes go to a follow-up issue.

…he first agent ends (#2222)

Found by the main-integration lane: Integration failed on main run
40644839354 (30cd84f) and on #2176's run 40643516119.

## Cause (test flake, not a product regression)

`a create request's first message > is bound to the agent process it was
queued under: a replacement of the same kind ...` started SESSION2 from
the shell (`recorder SESSION1; exec recorder SESSION2`). Between SIGKILL
of SESSION1 and the `exec`, bash alone is in front. A pane event in that
gap makes `launchGone` (shell back in front, `server/core/pending.ts`)
hold the message as `first_message_launch_ended`. That is the documented
behaviour from #1969: the launched agent did end, and no agent was in
front. The test expected `pending_target_changed`, so it failed whenever
a read landed in the gap.

**Reproduced:** keeping the shell busy for a moment before the `exec` (a
builtin loop, so the shell itself stays in front) fails the old test 3
of 3, with exactly CI's `Received: "first_message_launch_ended"`. A
`sleep 1` there does not reproduce it, because `sleep` is another
process and reads as a changed target.

## Change

- The npm-style launcher fixture now also handles SIGUSR1: it starts
SESSION2, and ends SESSION1 once SESSION2 has spawned, so an agent is in
front throughout. Its exit-driven path (used by the #1545 test) is
unchanged.
- The test uses that launcher and waits until herdr no longer lists
SESSION1 before it reports idle.

## Proof

- **Mutation:** with `samePendingIdentity` ignoring process pid and
birth, the new test fails 2 of 2 (the message is typed into SESSION2).
- **Stress:** the first-message block plus the two replacement tests (21
tests) passed 10 of 10 on CI's Node 22 and herdr 0.9.3, through `dori
heavy` on a loaded host.
- **Local checks:** `bun run check fast` ok.

Test-only: no app code changes. Splits from the same lane: #2223 and
#2224.

## Reviews

- **omo-native-code-reviewer**, round 1 on the combined change: BLOCK
with two HIGHs, both fixed. One was a loop shape that
`scripts/conventions.test.ts` counts as a fixed sleep; the other was the
OpenCode helper not waiting for its own Ctrl-L. Round 2 on these heads:
APPROVE, no findings above LOW.
- Test-only, so no Codex review (notes/pr-policy.md: the test-only gate
is omo alone).

## Release 0.4.20

The release PR, prepared by step 1 of
[docs/development.md#releasing](https://github.com/devswha/ovis/blob/main/docs/development.md#releasing),
initially on main `bd676637a16471e8744d62c7311026ddb43a39eb` (#2335,
xterm 6), then merged with final-scope main
`ef482f2e66b3344658fb548fa1110744a92929c9` (#2338) and test-only
follow-up main `269e9ce19558b8d197959250075da56b25b9668f` (#2345):

- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.20 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.20` initially folded
122 fragments into the 2026-10-29 section of `CHANGELOG.md`, linked
their PRs, and deleted the fragments. After merging main, the modified
`letta-native-chat.md` from #2338 was folded by hand with its current
wording and PR link. No other late fragment landed; `changelog.d` holds
only `README.md`. Four additional entries for external PRs without their
own fragments bring the section to 157 entries.
- Added 22 `by @login` credits across all 19 outside-contributor PRs in
the release range. Preserved the existing credit to @Yoonwoo-Ha for
#1634. See the complete ancestry-based audit below.
- **Release summaries:** en, ko, ja and zh each have 5 new, 5 improved
and 5 fixed lines, matching 0.4.19's shape. They include the xterm 6
improvement: terminal frames no longer mix old and new output. Every
English line is at most 80 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` rises from 38 to 39 because
the bundle inputs changed since remote-v38.
- **Telemetry:** the guard confirms no Worker deploy or deployed
fingerprint update is needed.
- **iOS upload note:** CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION raised to 3 for App and
OvisNotifications (last uploaded: 2, source: `docs/native-app.md:99`,
commit `54fdadc1c65da5d50a6afef411e3ed8f23b6c255`). Both targets inherit
project-level Debug and Release settings, and every
`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` entry is 3. `app/store/ios.md` now records the
prepared build. This is the last documented upload, not a live App Store
Connect query; check for later uploads before uploading. The marketing
version remains 1.0.
- The changelog explicitly distinguishes delivery: removing WebKit's
form bar (#2109) requires the new iOS app build, while Korean
composition (#2307) comes with the PC update and needs no new iOS build.
The Korean-input summary says the same in all four languages, with no
change to list counts.

## Validation

- Final `dori heavy release-check -- bun run check fast`: passed, exit
0; workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit
suite (8,591 pass, 0 fail, 34 platform skips in 549 files). This is the
merged tree containing #2338, #2345, the contributor corrections and iOS
build 3.
- `bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts
server/release-notes.test.ts`: 33 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.20`: passed, with all patch-note
lists and the full changelog.
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts` and CI mode with `--base
ef482f2`: passed on the final merged
tree: "Release 0.4.20: remote bundle, telemetry Worker and release
metadata are in order."
- `bun scripts/release-guards.ts --release 0.4.20`: expected exit 1 only
because "remote-v39 is not published." The merge pass publishes it after
merging.

## Merge pass

**Do not merge before the owner's OK.**

- [ ] Merge only after the owner's OK and required checks pass.
- [ ] After merging, push `remote-v39` on the merged commit and wait for
the **Remote PC bundles** workflow to publish the manifest and all
archives.
- [ ] Then run **Release** on `main` with version `0.4.20`, without `v`.
The Release workflow creates the app tag; do not push it by hand.
- [ ] From this PR's merge until the Release run is done, merge nothing
touching `server/`, `shared/`, `bun.lock` or `patches/`.
- [ ] A changelog fragment merged after this PR must be moved into
0.4.20 by hand.

This lane stops at the open PR. No tag, workflow dispatch, merge or
telemetry deploy was performed.

**Completed release follow-up:** merged main `ef482f2e` including #2338
(`fix/letta-no-live-box`), folded its revised fragment into 0.4.20, and
retained the contributor-credit commit `184dc120` and iOS-build commit
`0ffa3d45`. The Letta summary already describes conversation support
without promising a live-terminal box, so it needs no change.

Merged test-only #2345 from main `269e9ce1`: the two usage browser
checks now wait for the earlier shared account-order save and start the
sign-in check from a cleared order. No product behavior or late fragment
was added; `changelog.d` still contains only `README.md`. The iOS
delivery clarification and resolved review thread are retained.

## Complete external-contributor audit

Checked every merged PR whose merge commit is in `git log
v0.4.19..origin/main`: 133 PRs through final-scope main `ef482f2e`, or
134 including test-only #2345 on `269e9ce1`, with 19 PRs by 12 external
non-bot authors. Both rescans found no additional external-author gaps;
#2345 is by the maintainer. Added the four missing entries: #2271 and
#2274 by @CharleoYang, #2290 by @DravenDou, and #2282 by @fivetaku. The
tab-reopening summary now includes the history-page improvement in all
four languages; list counts remain 5/5/5.

Full external PR list checked: #1911 @jjsteffen; #2068 @YuuuXie; #2072
