test(chat): wait for the grid each window asked for, by attach or resize - #2295
scripts/ui-contexts-regression.ts failed twice per job at scripts/chat-size-regression.ts:1203 on PRs that do not touch the terminal (#2290 @49a7457c, #2293 @d619ea0f, and two more runs). A scan of every ui-regression job since 2026-10-27 12:00Z puts the first failure at 2026-10-28 18:46Z, after #2272 and #2255 merged.
checkFocusedWindowReclaimsTerminalSize waited 10 s for an outgoing resize frame after the desktop window's attach. Since #2272 a new terminal attaches only once its first font is set (usePaneAttach.ts, fontSettled), so the attach already carries the final grid. The font effect's earlier resize is dropped by ws.tsresize() because the pane is not attached yet, and often nothing resizes after the attach. The server sizes the pty from the attach itself (server/core/terminals.ts, ensureAttachment and drivePty).
This is a test race, not a product bug. Locally the page sent only attach 121x41 (no keep_size), and the pane's shell reported stty size = 41 121.
What (test-only)
The check records every grid a window asks for: a resize, or an attach without keep_size. It does this through its own init script, so the shared openRecording recorder and the five assertions that compare whole attach frames stay unchanged.
It waits, under the same 10 s deadline, until the pane's shell reports the last asked grid. This replaces both the resize wait and the separate sizeBecomes for the two opening windows.
Changelog fragment under Maintenance.
Verification
Before: CHAT_SIZE_CASE=reclaim bun scripts/chat-size-regression.ts failed 4 of 4 runs locally with the same timeout.
After: the same command passed 3 of 3 runs. The reviewer ran it twice more in an isolated herdr session, and both passed.
The new wait can fail: with the server's attach driving the pty to cols - 1, the check fails with the pane is 41 120, not 41 121. Skipping drivePty on attach still passes, because a first attach creates the pty at the asked grid anyway.
bun run check fast is green: typecheck, build, and 8380 unit tests.
Fixed sleeps: the new pause sits in a poll with a deadline, and the file's count stays at 5 (conventions.test.ts passes).
Review
The fix is test-only, so this PR had the omo-native-code-reviewer only, per the lane rules. The verdict was approve with notes, with no CRITICAL, HIGH or MEDIUM findings. The reviewer traced the attach path and found no path where the pty keeps a stale size.
LOW notes, not changed here:
The new recorder does not filter by pane_id. This is harmless while each page opens a single ?pane=.
A late font face that resizes after the first match would fail a later step as a flake, never as a false pass. The old wait had the same window.
The comment at src/lib/useTerminalRefits.ts:139 still says the refit runs "right after the attach". It now runs before a deferred first attach, so it is worth rewording separately.
…ize (#2294)
Since #2272 a new terminal attaches only once its first font is set, so
its first attach already carries the final grid and often no resize
follows. checkFocusedWindowReclaimsTerminalSize waited 10 s for a resize
frame after the attach and failed twice per job on unrelated PRs.
The check now records every grid a window asks for (a resize, or an
attach without keep_size) and waits, under the same 10 s deadline, for
the pane's shell to report the last one.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Updated the focused-window checks to verify that the shell reaches the requested grid after either an attach or a resize, on desktop and phone.
Checks now report separately when no grid was requested or the pane does not reach the requested size within 10 seconds.
Documentation
Added a changelog entry describing the updated browser check.
The focused-window reclaim check now captures requested grids from non-keep_size attach frames and resize frames. It waits for the shell-reported pane size to match the latest request, with separate failures for a missing request and a size mismatch. The changelog records this update.

Summary
Record and verify requested grid scripts/chat-size-regression.ts, changelog.d/reclaim-check-attach-grid.md
The helper records grid dimensions from resize frames and attaches that do not keep the existing size. The desktop and phone checks wait for the shell-reported size to match the latest request. The changelog describes the updated wait condition.
devswha/ovis#2272: It changes terminal startup so the initial attach can include the final grid without a later resize.

Explanation
Issue #2294 requires the focused-window reclaim check to accept a grid requested by either attach or resize. The change records non-keep_size attach grids and resize grids, then polls under the existing 10-second deadline until the shell reports the latest requested grid. It also preserves the shared recorder and whole-attach assertions. The changelog records the maintenance change.

…wer grid was asked (#2294)
Two CodeRabbit findings on #2295: a resize sent while the shell answered could leave the check holding the older grid, and a late font face could refit the terminal after the first match. The wait re-reads the latest asked grid after the shell answers, and takes one only once document.fonts has loaded.
Merging 1f4605d (closes #2294). Test only: scripts/chat-size-regression.ts and a changelog fragment. Since #2272 a new terminal's first attach waits for its font, so it often already carries the final grid and no resize follows; the focused-window reclaim check waited 10 s for a resize frame that never came and failed intermittently (seen on #2290 and #2293). The check now records the grid each window asks for, in its attach (unless it keeps the pane's size) or a later resize, and waits for the shell to report that grid. The lane's evidence: 4/4 failures before, 3/3 passes after, and a server mutation sending cols-1 still fails it (the pty was verified at the asked grid, 121x41); bun run check fast passes; omo approved; the merge pass read the diff. A follow-up commit accepts an asked grid only once fonts have loaded and no newer grid was asked meanwhile. The 100 ms poll matches the existing sizeBecomes, as the pty's size is only readable from the shell.
