test(files): open the read-held thread's FIFO before it says it is reading (#2296) - #2297
server/file-pool.test.ts hung CI's Fast checks on run 40779586477 (#2293, which does not touch it): the job was cancelled at its 10-minute limit with this file the only one never reported.
The test "keeps a descriptor its thread is reading open until that thread is gone, when the last server stops" holds its file thread with the fake worker's readGate (server/file-worker.fake.ts, from #2256). That gate said the thread was reading (Atomics.notify on cell 1) before it opened the FIFO for reading, a blocking open(2). The test then ends the thread (release()) and opened the FIFO's writer with a blocking openSync(fifo, "w") on its main thread. A thread ended between the notify and its own open never opens the reader, so the writer's open waits forever, and Bun's per-test timeout cannot fire while the main thread is blocked in a system call. #2265's PR body named this gap as a candidate flake.
The test releases the read with O_WRONLY | O_NONBLOCK and a one-byte write, which never waits (and would fail with ENXIO rather than hang if there were no reader).
Both FIFO gates (readGate, authorizeGate, now one holdOnFifo) name their FIFO descriptor in a third gate cell, and the test closes it once the thread is gone: a worker ended inside that read never runs its finally on Bun, so before this each run left 2 FIFO descriptors open (found from CodeRabbit's review; /proc/self/fd count at the end of the file: 2 -> 0).
server/file-pool.ts is not changed: the server's thread never waits on a file thread (it posts a task, ends a thread with terminate() without awaiting it, and closes descriptors), so the product cannot block this way. Only the tests await fileThreadsClosed().
Verification
Widened window, scratch only (a 500 ms Atomics.wait right after the notify in readGate):
on main 72f2edf: timeout 30 bun test server/file-pool.test.ts is killed at 30 s (exit 124), stopped in that test;
with this fix: exit 0 in 1 s, 12 pass.
50 runs of bun test server/file-pool.test.ts, 10 at a time pinned to 2 cores (taskset -c 0,1), each under timeout 60: 50 pass, 0 hangs. Again pinned to one core (taskset -c 0): 50 pass, 0 hangs.
Leaked FIFO descriptors at the end of the file (/proc/self/fd, scratch probe): 2 before, 0 after; on 80b8cb2 the widened window again passes in 1 s and 50/50 runs pinned to one core pass.
bun run check fast: green on 80b8cb2 (typecheck, build, generated files, workflow syntax; unit 8380 pass, 0 fail, 34 skip in 535 files).
Review
omo-native-code-reviewer: PASS (APPROVE), no CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM. It found no path left that blocks the test's main thread (the remaining waits are the non-blocking open and write, hold.ran()'s 10 s bounded wait, and awaited promises), confirmed the release cannot hit ENXIO/EAGAIN, and checked that a failing assertion while the thread is parked fails fast instead of hanging. A second omo round on 80b8cb2 (the FIFO-descriptor take-back): PASS (APPROVE), reproduced 2 leaked FIFO descriptors at 65a8a71 and none at 80b8cb2. No Codex review: test-only, server/file-pool.ts unchanged.
Known limits (LOW, not fixed here)
If the thread is ended after its notify but before it enters the FIFO read, the test still passes but does not exercise a read in flight in that run (a false pass, never a hang). Every gate that notifies before it blocks has this window, authorizeGate included.
The reviewer's findings and how each was resolved are in a PR comment.
…ading (#2296)
The file-pool test that holds a thread inside a read could hang the unit
run: the fake worker's readGate notified "ran" before its blocking FIFO
open, and the test, after ending the thread, opened the writer blocking
on its main thread. A thread ended in between never opened the reader,
so the main thread blocked forever where Bun's timeout cannot fire.
readGate now opens the FIFO read-write before it notifies and blocks in
a read of it, as authorizeGate does; the test releases it with a
non-blocking write.
Review of 65a8a71 (test-only; server/file-pool.ts unchanged, so omo only per the lane brief).
omo-native-code-reviewer: PASS (APPROVE), no CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM. It ran the file (12 pass), 30 runs of it 15 at a time (30 pass), scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts, and a throwaway mutation that fails an assertion while the thread is parked (exits 1 in under a second, no hang).
Findings and resolutions:
LOW: a thread ended after the notify but before it enters the FIFO read gives a false pass in that run (never a hang); same window as every notify-then-block gate, authorizeGate included. Not fixed; listed under Known limits in the PR body.
LOW: a thread ended between its FIFO open and the read leaves the test-only FIFO descriptor open until the test process exits. Harmless (the FIFO is removed in afterEach, and the open reader is what keeps the release from hitting ENXIO). Not fixed; in Known limits.
LOW (nit): a changelog fragment line was 102 columns. Fixed: rewrapped under 100.
Fixed a file-thread test that could hang by ensuring the FIFO is ready before the test proceeds and using a nonblocking release.
The fake file worker now opens the FIFO before reporting that it is reading, then blocks in a FIFO read. The test releases the FIFO with a nonblocking writer open and a write, avoiding a blocking writer open if the worker has ended.
Changes: FIFO test synchronization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Open the FIFO before reporting the read server/file-worker.fake.ts
The fake worker opens the FIFO read/write before publishing the descriptor. It then blocks in a FIFO read and closes the FIFO descriptor in a finally block.
Release the FIFO without blocking server/file-pool.test.ts, changelog.d/file-pool-test-hang.md
The test opens the FIFO writer with O_NONBLOCK, writes "x", and closes it. The changelog describes the FIFO-opening order and nonblocking release write.
devswha/ovis#2265: This PR added the descriptor-lifecycle test and FIFO fixture that this change updates.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 65a8a
The synchronization fix removes the hang, but the test still has a narrow false-pass window and interrupted runs can retain a descriptor.

Explanation
Issue #2296 requires preventing the test main thread from blocking on a FIFO writer when the gated thread ends early. The diff opens the FIFO with constants.O_RDWR before readGate publishes readiness, then blocks in a one-byte read. The test now uses O_WRONLY | O_NONBLOCK and writes one byte. These changes remove the blocking writer-open path described by the issue. The changelog records the maintenance fix. No product-code change is required by #2296.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has the Change section and the Validation section. The Change section states the problem, the root cause, and the resulting behavior. It explains that the change is test-only and that server/file-pool.ts is unchanged. The Validation section lists the widened-window reproduction, the 50-run repeats on one and two pinned cores, the leaked-descriptor probe, and the bun run check fast result. It also records the reviewer outcome and the known LOW limits. It links issue #2296 with Closes. The template asks for an issue link only for features, and this is a bug fix, so the missing link is not a gap. The template asks for contract-test coverage only for HTTP/WS changes, and this change does not touch HTTP or WS. The description is detailed and matches the diff, so it is mostly complete.

… is gone (#2296)
A file thread ended while it blocks in a FIFO gate's read never runs its
finally (on Bun a terminated worker stops as the read returns, checked
5 of 5), so both FIFO gates left their FIFO descriptor open in the test
process: 2 per run of server/file-pool.test.ts. The gates now name that
descriptor in a third cell, and the test closes it once the thread is
gone; whichever side takes it from the cell first closes it.
Review of 80b8cb2 (test-only follow-up to CodeRabbit's FIFO-descriptor finding):
omo-native-code-reviewer: PASS (APPROVE), no CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM. It reproduced 2 leaked FIFO descriptors at 65a8a71 and none at 80b8cb2, and checked that closeFifo cannot close a reused number (both sides take it with Atomics.exchange; a test without a FIFO gate finds -1) and cannot run while the thread still reads (it runs after fileThreadsClosed(), whose close event Bun fires only after the read returns). The earlier hang fix is unchanged.
Findings and resolutions:
CodeRabbit Minor (FIFO descriptor left open by an ended thread): valid; its suggested try/finally move would not help (a terminated Bun worker never runs finally), fixed instead by the take-back in 80b8cb2.
LOW: hold.closeFifo() runs after the test's last assertion, so a test that already failed also leaks one FIFO descriptor. Declined: it only happens on a red run, in a test-only FIFO the test removes in afterEach.
Merging 80b8cb2 (closes #2296). Test only: server/file-worker.fake.ts, server/file-pool.test.ts and a changelog fragment. The fake file worker's readGate announced that it was reading before its blocking FIFO open, while the test opened the FIFO's writer blocking on the main thread; a thread ended in that gap left the test waiting forever, where Bun's test timeout cannot fire (it hung #2293's Fast checks). The fake now opens the FIFO read-write (which never waits) before it announces, then blocks in a read, and the test releases it with a non-blocking write, the pattern authorizeGate already uses. A follow-up commit also closes the FIFO descriptor an ended thread leaves open, once that thread is gone. The lane's evidence: with the gap widened it hung before and passes after, 50/50 under load on 2 and 1 cores; server/file-pool.ts itself cannot block this way; bun run check fast passes; omo PASS; the merge pass read the diff.
