Change

The daily anonymous active message (POST /v1/active) now carries a usage object for the day, so the counts can show whether people use Ovis for its core job: seeing an agent is blocked from another screen and answering it.

  • surfaces: the kinds of screen that opened the app: ios-app, android-app, mac-app, mobile-pwa, pwa, mobile-browser, browser (src/lib/telemetrySurface.ts, sent as ?surface= on the local /ws upgrade).
  • ingress: how those visits reached the server, from observedIngress with an unforwarded request split into local and lan: local, lan, tailscale, funnel, proxy, unknown.
  • prompt_answers: answers through POST /api/pane/prompt/answer that returned 2xx.
  • alerts_delivered: pane alerts a push service took. The test push and the pairing notice are not counted.
  • alerts_opened: pane alerts tapped. The service worker posts { alert_opened: true } to /api/telemetry; native app taps are not counted yet.

It records counts only: never which pane, agent, device or time. Counts are capped at 9999. A count made on a day the app was not opened is kept for that day's visit and never sent alone, so an active row still means a day of use. A new kind of agent, screen or way in resends the day's message at once. Today's counts alone resend at most hourly, and a finished day's last counts go out with the next visit. A state file from before usage keeps its delivered days delivered.

NOTICE_VERSION moves to 5, so the one-time notice shows again and nothing is sent until it has. The Settings description (with ko/ja/zh), docs/guide.md, telemetry/README.md and the report script describe the new field.

Worker and database (already done): the Worker takes the message with or without usage (older apps keep working), and active has a usage column. Before this PR I ran the README's ALTER TABLE active ADD COLUMN usage ... on the production D1 (10,349 rows kept), deployed the Worker (version 1d9dc9a0-0a56-4297-8600-db800124c67a), and recorded it in telemetry/deployed.json. After the deploy the live Worker answered 400 to a malformed body, and real active rows kept arriving (today's count went 1090 → 1091).

This changes the HTTP contract (/v1/active body, POST /api/telemetry key, /ws?surface=), so it should wait for a real review.

Validation

  • bun run check fast: passed (workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests).
  • New tests:
    • server/telemetry.test.ts (daily usage): visits with surfaces and ingress, the hourly resend, the next day's flush, no-visit days, off and blocked, the count cap, old state files, POST alert_opened.
    • telemetry/worker.test.ts: messages with and without usage, refused usage shapes, the upsert keeping usage, the README ALTER on an existing table.
    • server/push.test.ts: only delivered pane alerts are counted.
    • server/opencode-answer.test.ts: only a 2xx answer is counted.
    • src/lib/telemetrySurface.test.ts.
    • src/pwa-notification.test.ts: a pane alert tap posts once; a generic notification does not.
  • Skipped: bun run check full, browser and Windows runs (CI covers them).

… alerts

The daily active message carries a usage object: which kinds of screen opened the
app (phone and Mac apps, installed web app or browser tab), how they reached the
PC (local, LAN, Tailscale, Funnel, proxy), and counts of prompt answers sent, pane
alerts delivered and pane alerts tapped. Counts only, never which pane, agent,
device or time; a count on a day without a visit is never sent alone. New kinds go
at once, today's counts at most hourly. The notice moves to version 5.

The Worker takes the message with or without usage, and the active table has a
usage column; the column was added and the Worker deployed before this commit
(telemetry/deployed.json).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Anonymous daily usage reports now include app screen type, connection route, and counts of prompt answers and pane alerts delivered or opened.
    • Alert opens are counted only when telemetry is enabled, permitted, and the updated notice has been shown.
  • Privacy
    • Reports contain counts only; they do not identify specific panes or link answers and alerts to individuals. Usage is not counted or sent before the updated notice is shown.
  • Documentation
    • Updated telemetry settings and guidance explain the added usage data and reporting details.

The PR adds notice-gated daily usage counts for screen surfaces, connection routes, prompt answers, and pane alerts. It sends and stores usage with active telemetry messages, adds reporting queries, and records alert opens from notification clicks.

… it at most hourly

Review of #2392 found that usage was counted and kept before the version 5
notice was seen, then sent once it was, and that a new kind of screen or way
in sent a fresh message at once, so two messages a second apart told when
something happened.

- Usage (screens, ways in, prompt answers, alerts) is counted only once the
current notice was shown. A state file without the usage_after_notice mark
(an earlier build of this branch) or with the notice unseen has its usage
dropped when read; a delivered day keeps its delivery, so nothing is resent.
- Today's usage changes on the wire at most once per USAGE_RESEND_MS, with a
visit. A resend for a new kind of agent carries the usage already sent, and
a tapped alert sends nothing by itself.
- The service worker posts a tap only after GET /api/telemetry says the counts
are on and their notice was shown.
- POST /api/telemetry refuses a body over 16 KiB with 413 and counts nothing.
- A /ws?surface= that names no known kind counts no usage for its connection
(neither a screen nor its way in); the connection still opens.
A saved OpenCode step, a step back, or a move between pi-ask questions answers
200 but sends nothing upstream; they no longer count as prompt answers in the
daily usage (#2392 review).
The report test copied the three usage queries' SQL; it now runs them on an
in-memory database built from telemetry/schema.sql and checks the counts
(#2392 review).
…esh usage only with a visit

Codex review of the #2392 fixes:
- The hour counted from an answered delivery, so a message the receiver read
but whose answer was lost let fresher usage go out a second later. The usage
and its time are now kept before each message goes (wire_usage, sent_at),
and a retry within the hour carries what already went, across restarts too.
- A settings change or a late notice timer could send fresh usage past the
hour without a visit. Fresh usage now goes only from a visit; other flushes
  carry what already went.
The report test picks the usage queries by title, not position.
…ones back

The state is now written before each active message goes. When that write threw
before the delivery's first await, its cleanup ran before the delivery was
stored as in flight, so the finished delivery stood as in flight for good and
every later visit waited on it: nothing was sent again until a restart. The
cleanup now runs once the delivery is stored (Codex re-review of #2392).

Review findings and fixes

The merge pass's two reviews of 6d980af (omo and Codex, privacy focus) and a second round of reviews (omo + Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh) on the fix commits. Every HIGH and MEDIUM got a test that fails on the old code and passes after the fix. shared/telemetry.ts and telemetry/worker.ts are unchanged, so the deployed Worker fingerprint still matches and nothing needs redeploying.

# Finding Fix
H1 Usage (screens, ways in, prompt answers, alerts) was counted and stored before the v5 notice was seen, then sent once it was (retroactive collection). ce35ea3: usage is counted only once the current notice was shown. A state file without the new usage_after_notice mark (an earlier build of this branch), or with the notice unseen, has its usage dropped when read. A delivered day keeps its delivery, so dropping it sends nothing. A visit before the notice still counts the day, as on main, with empty usage. Tests: a fresh install, a v4 notice, a restart, an old-build file.
H2 A new screen or way in sent a report at once, outside the hourly limit, so two reports a second apart revealed when something happened. ce35ea3: today's usage changes on the wire at most once an hour, and only with a visit. A resend for a new kind of agent (as on main) carries the usage already sent. A tapped alert sends nothing by itself.
H (round 2, Codex) If the receiver read a message but its answer was lost, the next send could carry fresher usage a second later. b051807: the usage and its time are kept before each message goes (wire_usage, sent_at). A retry within the hour carries what already went, also across a restart.
M (round 3, Codex) Writing the state before each message (b051807) could throw before the delivery's first await. Its cleanup then ran before the delivery was stored as in flight, so no message was sent again until a restart. 7fc16a5: the cleanup runs once the delivery is stored, so a failed write stops only that try. Test: a write that fails once, then the next visit sends.
M (round 2, Codex; also omo LOW 1) A settings change or a late notice timer could send fresh usage after the hour without a visit. b051807: fresh usage goes only from a visit flush. Other flushes carry what already went.
M3 prompt_answers also counted OpenCode draft saves, intermediate steps and back navigation. ea72271: counted only when the answer reached the agent (OpenCode or pi-ask took it, or its keys went to the pane). Saved steps and moves between questions are not counted. Test: the backward-navigation case counts 0.
M4 scripts/telemetry-report.test.ts copied the SQL instead of checking results. 74a980b: the three usage queries run on an in-memory database built from telemetry/schema.sql, with seeded rows, and the test checks the counts. Dropping DISTINCT, widening the 30-day window or dropping usage IS NOT NULL each makes it fail. The command-dispatch test now picks these queries by title.
minor sw.js posted alert_opened while telemetry was off. ce35ea3: the worker first asks GET /api/telemetry and posts only when enabled, not blocked_by_env, and notice_seen. Test covers signed out, off, blocked, before the notice, and on.
minor Oversized /api/telemetry bodies were accepted. ce35ea3: over 16 KiB (announced or measured) answers 413 and counts nothing.
minor A bad /ws?surface= was accepted. ce35ea3: a value no page names counts no usage for that connection (neither a screen nor its way in). The socket still opens, so an unexpected value never breaks the app. A page that names no surface still counts its way in, as before. Documented on visitSurface in server/telemetry.ts.

Declined (Codex round 2 MEDIUM): the page sends ?surface= to its own app server even while the counts are off or before the notice. That server is the user's own (same origin), and it already gets the User-Agent the value is derived from. The value lives only in memory for that connection; nothing stores or sends it while the counts are off or before the notice (tests and the end-to-end check below). Holding it back until the page knows the telemetry state would need a WS protocol change, which is out of scope for this fix.

Remaining LOW (omo, no change):

  • Prompt answers made by sending keys count once per question; an OpenCode form counts once per form.
  • Usage counted during the ten-minute grace is kept if the switch is turned off then, and sent if it is turned on again. Main already does the same with the day's agent kinds.
  • A downgrade, or a state directory shared with an older build, drops the day's usage (data lost, never leaked).
  • The unknown-surface rule is covered by a unit test of visitSurface and by the end-to-end check below, not by a contract test.

Validation

  • bun run check fast on 7fc16a5: green (8704 pass, 0 fail, 35 skip; typecheck and build ok). An earlier run caught that a helper first placed in shared/telemetry.ts changed the Worker fingerprint; it now lives in server/telemetry.ts.
  • Fail-first runs on the old code: H1 (two tests), H2, M3; in round 2 the lost-answer and no-visit tests; in round 3 the failed-write test. The M4 test fails under each of three wrong queries.
  • An end-to-end check through a real createServer (port 0, temporary state directory, unreachable herdr socket, fake receiver) passes all six scenarios: no usage before the notice, the first message carries none of it, no second message for a new screen within the hour, a bad surface adds no usage, an oversized POST is 413, a tap is counted and sends nothing.
  • Reviews: omo APPROVE (LOWs only). Codex round 1 REQUEST_CHANGES (the HIGH and MEDIUMs above, fixed); Codex re-review of b051807: REQUEST_CHANGES with one MEDIUM (round 3 row, fixed); Codex review of 7fc16a5: APPROVE, no findings.
  • Not run: the browser, Windows and integration suites (CI runs them). The deployed Worker and the production D1 were not touched.

Merge-pass re-review of #2392 (Codex repro): a day already over sent its
final usage at once, so a message at 23:59:59 and another for the same day
at 00:00:00 told what happened in that second, also after a lost answer. A
day's usage now changes on the wire only an hour after it last went, today
with a visit and a closed day with any flush; until then a retry carries what
already went.

The report query test seeds every row from one today, so a run across UTC
midnight seeds no row a day off.

Merge-pass re-review @ 7fc16a5: fixed in 947bafa

Finding Fix
HIGH: a day already over sent its final usage at once, so a message at 23:59:59 (prompt_answers 0) and a second one for the same day at 00:00:00 (prompt_answers 1) exposed a one-second window, also after a lost answer. server/telemetry.ts usageDue: a day's usage changes on the wire only USAGE_RESEND_MS after it last went, today with a visit and a closed day with any flush; until then a retry carries what already went. Fail-first test with an injected clock (answered and lost cases): 23:59:59 message, one answer, visit at 00:00:00, then the day's final usage only an hour later.
MINOR: scripts/telemetry-report.test.ts called date('now') per seeded row (UTC-midnight race). Every row is seeded from one today read once.

Validation: the new test fails on 7fc16a5 and passes on 947bafa. bun run check fast on 947bafa is green (unit: 8705 pass, 0 fail, 35 skip in 555 files, 8 at a time, 187.9s; typecheck and build ok). shared/telemetry.ts and telemetry/worker.ts are unchanged, so the deployed Worker fingerprint still matches.

Merging 947bafa (the maintainer's PR, on his go). Telemetry daily usage: each day's report can now carry which screens were used, the ways in (closed enums), how many prompt answers reached an agent, and alerts delivered/opened, as capped counts per day; NOTICE_VERSION goes to 5 so everyone sees the notice that now names these. The telemetry Worker and the production D1 ALTER were deployed by the maintainer beforehand; shared/telemetry.ts, telemetry/worker.ts and telemetry/deployed.json are unchanged by the review fixes, so the deployed fingerprint still matches. HTTP contract changes: the /v1/active body, the POST /api/telemetry key and /ws?surface=. Privacy review by the merge pass, two independent reviewers (a general pass and an adversarial privacy pass with concrete repros), three rounds: H1 (fixed): usage was counted and stored before the v5 notice was seen and sent once it was (retroactive collection); now nothing is counted before the notice and earlier tallies are dropped (fresh install, v4 upgrade, old-build state, restart and the service-worker tap all re-checked). H2 (fixed): a new screen or way in sent a report outside the hourly limit, so two reports a second apart revealed when something happened; usage changes now ride at most hourly and only with a visit, a lost answer is retried with the usage already sent, and a closed day's final usage also waits the hour (the 23:59:59 + 00:00:00 pair is gone; the day is still delivered after the hour). MEDIUMs fixed: prompt_answers counts only answers delivered to the agent (not drafts or back steps); the report queries are tested on a seeded database. Minors fixed: the service worker posts nothing while telemetry is off; an oversized POST /api/telemetry is refused (413); an unknown /ws?surface= value counts nothing. Accepted, both reviewers agreeing: the page sends ?surface= to its own same-origin app server even while counts are off, kept only in memory for that connection and never stored or sent. LOWs left: counts made while on survive an off/on switch within the grace period (none made while off are sent), a downgrade drops the day's usage (loss, not a leak). Off/blocked states record nothing; enums and the 9999 caps hold in the server and the Worker; no new identifier or header (the existing install id and IP-derived country are as before); old app <-> new Worker compatible both ways without crashes. CodeRabbit was rate-limited for most of the PR's life, so the two review agents' findings above stand in for it; its final pass left two Minors, noted as follow-ups: read the /api/telemetry body with a byte cap (it is behind authentication and already refused above 16 KiB), and have the Worker ignore a delayed older same-day usage snapshot (a data-quality issue that can only lower that day's counts, not a privacy one).

…tate directory writes (#2408)

Found by the reviewer bench (claim #1 in its report). It was there
before #2392, at 73d1826; #2392's usage counts added another writer
that can trigger it. To fix before 0.4.21.

## Bug

Every telemetry write in `server/telemetry.ts` reads all of
`telemetry.json` (`refresh()`) and later writes all of it back
(`persist()`). Two Ovis servers can share one state directory, for
example an installed app and a source checkout. If one of them reads the
switch as on just before the user turns it off in the other, its next
visit or count writes `enabled: true` back. The opt-out is undone and
the next daily message goes out.

## Change

- **"Off" in its own file:** a switch turned off now also lives in
`telemetry-off`, beside `telemetry.json`. Only the switch writes or
removes it, and no visit or count touches it.
- The counts are on only when `telemetry-off` is absent and
`telemetry.json` says on.
- Off writes the mark before writing `telemetry.json` and again after
it, so an on from another server between the two writes can't leave off
unmarked.
  - On removes the mark only after `telemetry.json` says on.
- **Older builds:** an `enabled: false` written by an older build is
copied into the mark whenever `telemetry.json` is read. A read that
can't write it still reads off and tries again next time.
- **Fails closed:** the mark is read by `offMarked`. Only a name that is
not there, in a state directory this process can read, counts as no
mark. A dangling link, `EACCES`, `ENOTDIR` or any other error reads off,
so nothing is sent. A first run makes its state directory before
looking, so a fresh install still starts on. A state directory that
cannot be made now also reads off in Settings; before, it sent nothing
but showed on.
- **Sends in progress:**
- Off stops this server's own sends before it reads or writes anything.
- The mark is checked last, right before each send, with nothing in
between: after the daily message's own state write, and in `report()`
before the install or update event. Days still waiting stop once another
server turns the counts off.
- `report()` clears its in-flight send after the send is stored, as the
daily-message path does, so an event held back by that last check is
sent once the counts are on again.
- **Untouched:** `shared/telemetry.ts` and the Worker are unchanged, so
nothing needs deploying.

## Tests (fail first)

Five new tests in `server/telemetry.test.ts` ("another server on the
same state directory") fail on main and pass here. The first two run a
real second server process: it reads the state, then pauses on its `now`
clock, which Telemetry calls between reading and writing. The two
processes hand off over stdin and stdout, with no sleeps or polling.

- An off while the other server is midway through a count, or through a
visit, stays off. The other server's late write lands, nothing is sent,
and a fresh reader also sees off.
- An off that overlaps an on from another server, and finishes last,
stays off against a later stale write.
- An older build's off stays off against a late write saying on. If it
couldn't be marked at start, the next read marks it.
- Days still to send stop once another server turns the counts off.

A sixth test checks that turning the counts on from either server turns
them on.

## Known limits

- **A message already leaving:** the mark is checked immediately before
each send, with no code in between. Only a send that has already started
when another server turns the counts off can still land; nothing changes
the switch afterwards.
- **An on can be undone, never an off:** a server that read off a moment
before another server turned the counts on can mark them off again. This
is the safe direction.
- **Servers from before this fix:** they ignore the mark, so they can
still turn themselves back on. The changelog says the fix holds between
servers of this version or later.

## Reviews

- **omo-native-code-reviewer on 9913b08:** APPROVE, LOWs only.
- Fixed in c8f8c74: an overlapping off/on could leave off unmarked; the
changelog said "always"; an unwritable mark left this server's sends
going.
- Not fixed: a start-up that marks off can undo a concurrent on (safe
direction), and another server's send already in flight (see Known
limits).
- **Codex Terra 6.1 fast xhigh, three rounds:**
- **Round 1:** three HIGHs and a MEDIUM, each reproduced by Terra's
probes.
- Fixed: the overlapping off/on, and the older-build off left unmarked
after a failed write.
- Declined: the synchronous gap before a send, and an on undone by a
stale off (see Known limits).
- **Round 2:** two MEDIUMs, both fixed. A read could write the mark
before this server's sends were stopped, and the test helper's buffered
output could hold back its handshake.
- **Round 3:** APPROVE with no findings. Terra's sandbox refuses to let
the parent write to the child's stdin (`EPERM`, reproduced there without
any telemetry code), so it could not run the two-process tests; they run
here and in check fast.

- **Merge pass @ c8f8c74:** BLOCK on a reproduced HIGH: the mark failed
open (an inaccessible state directory or a dangling link read as no
mark, and `report()` sent before a write failed). There was also a
MEDIUM: move the check right before each send. Both are fixed in
d7d3ea3.
- **Codex Terra on d7d3ea3:** a LOW (an event held back by the last
check stayed stuck until restart), fixed; then APPROVE with no findings.
Its probes: modes `000`, `100`, `400` and `ENOTDIR` read off; `500`,
`700` and a first run read on; dangling and self-referencing links read
off.

## Validation

- `bun run check fast` on d7d3ea3: ok (8794 pass, 0 fail, 35 skip;
typecheck and build ok).
- `bun test server/telemetry.test.ts`: 60 pass, 0 fail.
`server/api.contract.test.ts -t telemetry`: 4 pass.
`server/conventions.test.ts` and `scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts`: pass.
- Fail-first logs: all five new tests fail on main's
`server/telemetry.ts`, and the two round-2 tests fail on 9913b08.
- Not run: browser, Windows and integration suites (CI). No real
receiver, Worker or D1 was used.

…a relay session (#2476)

## Summary

Lets the server accept a paired phone's requests through an end-to-end
encrypted relay session, keyed by the device's own key. The relay link
that would carry those sessions is not in this PR, so nothing reaches
this code from the network yet. Builds on #2436 (PR-C: Noise NK, the
Ovis Mux v1 codec and engine, and the relay identity), which is merged;
this branch is rebased onto main.

- `feat(server): admit paired devices through the relay by device key`
(todo 8)
- a relay principal: `ServerContext.peer` can be `{ kind: "relay",
device, sessionId }`, and `decideAccess` admits it as `via: "relay"`;
- device enrollment with a P-256 public key (`DeviceStore.pairRelay`)
and signature checks (`matchRelay`);
- pairing-code attempts shared with cookie pairing, limits on code
issuance and relay failures;
  - `via_relay` on listed devices; `ObservedIngress` gains `relay`.
- `feat(server): serve HTTP and event streams over a relay session`
(todo 9): `server/relay/session.ts`.
- Admission: AUTH with a device signature, or PAIR with a code, over the
protected Noise channel.
- HTTP/SSE are carried over mux streams with per-route deadlines and
bounded source queues.
- Security headers, identity encoding, logging and page-media isolation
are kept.
- `feat(server): carry terminal sockets over the relay with their own
flow control` (todo 10): `server/relay/virtual-socket.ts` adapts a mux
WS stream to the core socket, so `/ws` attaches run over the relay with
per-stream credit.
- `655d2eae fix(server): keep sessions open when a paired device is
renamed`: ports only the server side of 9f971b24. Rename and same-role
updates keep native WS/SSE and relay sessions open; role changes and
revocation still close stale authority. Renaming during WebCrypto
verification preserves a valid proof.
- `fccf9cae fix(server): report pairing rate limits over the relay as
rate limits`: resolves F2 nit 1. PAIR admission sends `auth_failed` with
the native rate-limit message instead of `internal_error`, as suggested
by F2; relay HTTP retains the native 429 `pairing_rate_limited` response
and `Retry-After`. PAIR is a session frame, not an HTTP request, and has
no HTTP status.

## Security model

- **Who a relay request is.** A relay request is identified only by
`ServerContext.peer`, which only `RelaySession` sets after a verified
AUTH or PAIR. It is never taken from headers or cookies.
- For a relay peer, the dispatcher ignores the source IP, proxy and
Tailscale headers, `x-forwarded-for`, presented tokens and the device
cookie.
- The request carries only the allowlisted request headers; the session
sets `origin` and `sec-fetch-site` itself.
- **Routes a relay peer cannot use.** `/api/auth` and
`/api/devices/pair` answer 403 `device_key_required` to a relay peer. A
relay device never holds a cookie: its `token_hash` hashes a random
token that is never issued.
- **AUTH signature.** The signature covers `ovis-relay-auth/1 || 32-byte
fresh nonce || server_id`. It is strict base64url, 64 bytes, and checked
against a canonical P-256 SPKI, and AUTH is accepted once per session.
- `matchRelay` re-reads the device after the WebCrypto await and refuses
the proof if the role or key changed meanwhile.
- **Ordering.** HTTP_OPEN/WS_OPEN are refused until `authenticate()` has
run, and their `device_id` must equal it. `authenticate()` runs only
after the match/pair, a `has()` re-check and the `onRevoke`
registration. A setup frame after authentication is a protocol error.
- **Revocation.** Revoking a device or changing its role closes its
session (`auth_revoked`/`auth_changed`): in-flight HTTP streams are
reset and virtual sockets get 1008. A rename or same-role update does
not. Every new stream re-checks `devices.has`. Role changes remain a
defence without a production UI or HTTP role-change route.
- **Serve-only installs** refuse AUTH/PAIR.
- **First relay enrollment.** It closes the device gate on disk before
the device is admitted, and clears `unconfirmedFirstPairs`.

## What is NOT user-visible yet

- No relay link, relay service or `/api/relay` routes (later PRs), so no
code path opens a relay session in production. The new code is reached
only by the contract tests.
- No client relay channel, hosted shell, settings panel, i18n or
changelog fragment. The client change is one line: `DevicesPanel` shows
`via_relay`, which no device can have yet.

## Integration notes

- Commits are cherry-picked with `-x` from the verified todo commits
8db86dce, 3151c496 and e6958bc4. ff429a45 on the integration branch is
the same patch as 3151c496 (equal `git patch-id`), so it is covered.
- **Conflict:** `server/dispatch.ts` `bridgePath`. Kept main's
`/api/usage/statusline` and todo 8's relay-aware `ip`.
- **Conflicts with Portal sign-in (#2065), rebasing onto main:**
`shared/access.ts` `AccessVia` keeps both `"portal"` and `"relay"`.
`server/dispatch.ts` keeps main's `portalProven` and the relay-aware
`identity`; `portalProven` is also gated on `relayPeer === undefined`,
so a relay peer's headers never count as a Portal proof (the relay
branch of `decideAccess` already runs first, and `x-portal-*` is not in
the relay request-header allowlist). `handleMachineRequest` keeps main's
Portal recheck timer and adds the relay body budget.
- **Semantic conflict:** main's telemetry (#2392) types WS ingress as
`TelemetryIngress`, which has no `relay`. `observedIngress()` never
returns `relay`, because a relay peer has no IP and gets `unknown`. So
its return type is narrowed to `Exclude<ObservedIngress, "relay">` in
the todo-8 commit. This needs no telemetry contract change and no
runtime change. Each commit typechecks on its own.
- **Later fixes:** the server part of 9f971b24 is included here as
655d2ea; its client and hosted-shell QA changes remain in PR-G. Other
fixes touch files that land in a later PR:

## Review

This PR changes authentication and an HTTP/WS contract, so it waits for
a real review. The code-review agent's F2 findings and how each was
resolved are in a PR comment.

## Validation

Rebased onto main after #2436 was squash-merged (`git rebase --onto
origin/main 4ac9e3e`; base origin/main 4149232, head
`fccf9caed6f5cc3d54f17fbbc3ca574dd50a6090`). The two Portal conflicts
above were resolved by hand; there were no others.

- `bun install --frozen-lockfile`: exit 0.
- `timeout 900 bun run typecheck`: exit 0.
- `bun test --timeout 15000 server/relay server/devices.test.ts
server/device-access.contract.test.ts` (check fast does not run the
relay contract suites): **129 pass, 0 fail** in 5 files, run twice.
- `CHECK_DIR=/var/tmp/ck-prd timeout 1800 bun run check fast`: exit 0;
`revision.testedSha` equals HEAD
`fccf9caed6f5cc3d54f17fbbc3ca574dd50a6090`. Workflow syntax, generated
types/themes, typecheck, build and unit tests ok; unit: **9854 pass, 0
fail, 41 skip in 623 files**.

`bun run check full` (run before this rebase, on the earlier PR-D head
144bc89b; not re-run after it): exit 1 with **7 failures, all reproduced
on untouched origin/main** (4c62f57, a scratch worktree) with the same
errors, and none in files this PR touches:

| failure | origin/main | PR-D |
|---|---|---|
| `server/copilot.contract.test.ts`: Copilot stand-in not detected |
fails | fails, same error |
| `server/api.contract.test.ts`: Grok, Agy, Muse and Codex (native tool
call id) fixture processes did not start (4 tests) | 181 pass / 4 fail |
181 pass / 4 fail, same errors |
| `server/hermes.contract.test.ts`: Hermes stand-in did not become the
pane's foreground process | 8 pass / 1 fail | 8 pass / 1 fail, same
error |
| browser lane `scripts/ui-contexts-regression.ts`: `Resource
temporarily unavailable (os error 11)` (host pid exhaustion) | fails |
fails in check full; passes alone |

The fixture-start failures are environmental to the test host (they also
fail inside a fresh cgroup); the browser-lane failure is the host's pid
limit. Integration lane otherwise: 941 pass, 6 fail, 23 skip in 60
files.

All verification commands unset `FFMPEG` and set `TMPDIR=/var/tmp`;
retained check isolation uses `CHECK_DIR` under `/var/tmp` because the
runner otherwise hardcodes `/tmp`. LSP diagnostics could not initialize
because the installed TypeScript 7 package has no `tsserver.js`; the
repository typecheck passed instead.

Skipped: native Windows install (CI owns it).
