Change

DeepSeek Harness currently falls back to the terminal in the chat lens. Add a native v4 conversation reader for Linux. Bind the pane to the foreground process's held session.lock; never select a session by directory or modification time.

Read plain JSONL and concatenated Zstandard frames. Show human messages, assistant text and reasoning, tool calls and results, turn completion, compaction markers, and paged history. An idle new process shows an empty chat before its first log exists. Missing, ambiguous, unsupported, or damaged logs retain the terminal fallback.

Use the existing chat lens and composer layout. Only add the DeepSeek Harness label to the existing agent naming table. No new UI layout is introduced.

This PR is independent of #2452 and is based directly on upstream main.

Validation

  • bun run check fast: passed, including typecheck, production build, and unit tests.
  • Targeted reader, HTTP handler, and guarded-send tests passed. HTTP coverage verifies the dsh-transcript response and ETag invalidation after a transcript append.
  • Tests cover exact held-lock binding, ambiguous locks, resumed and unwritten sessions, plain and compressed logs, incomplete appends, malformed content, bounded decompression, pagination, compaction, missing logs, and tool output expansion.
  • Session binding requires Linux procfs and the same OS user. macOS and Windows retain the terminal fallback. Linux process tests skip on other platforms; file parsing tests remain portable.
  • Full browser and native Windows checks were not run locally. Fixtures use temporary files and synthetic messages; tests do not read a live user session.

Maintainer update: checked against a real DeepSeek Harness

The reader was checked against dsh 0.2.1-rc.5 (npm latest) and its two terminal UIs, with herdr 0.9.5 on Linux, through an OpenAI-compatible proxy. dsh has no terminal chat of its own. Its terminal UIs are profile plugins: dsh-tui (dsh-tui, profile dsh-tui) and dsh-tui-pi (dsh --profile tui). There are also one-shot dsh --profile headless runs. The parser handled real logs correctly. Pane detection and binding did not, so the following changed:

  • Detection. herdr never labels a pane dsh. It labels dsh-tui panes dsh-tui (dsh-tui reports itself) and leaves dsh-tui-pi panes unlabeled. The dsh-tui label now routes to this reader. For a pane herdr does not label, the pane.process_info answer Ovis already asks for (the gjc check) now also recognises a foreground dsh process.
    • Cost: no new polling and no extra RPC per pane. An unlabeled pane reuses its one probe, and a labeled dsh pane asks once per lookup for omo and the binding together, as Muse and Letta do. pane.process_info is asked by pane_id.
  • Strict match. node running …/bin/dsh or …/@deepseek-ai/dsh/lib/bin.js, then a chat profile. dsh-tui's own host process (node …/@deepseek-harness-tui/dsh-tui/lib/…/host-entry.js) also matches; dsh-tui runs it behind two launcher shims, and it holds the lock.
    • These never match: plugin management, config dumps, --help/--version, the web/sdk/sdk-minimal/acp service profiles, another program named or mentioning dsh, Debian's /usr/bin/dsh, and any non-node executable.
  • Binding. Headless names its session directories session-<uuid>, and the TUIs use bare UUIDs; both are accepted. The held lock alone decides the session:
    • two locked sessions, even with one unreadable, mean terminal fallback;
    • a log symlinked into another session of the store is rejected.
  • Explicit resume. Headless --session-id, and dsh-tui's DSH_TUI_RESUME_SESSION handoff from dsh-tui --resume, never show a new empty chat. The variable is read with the existing same-uid process probe (added to its routing allowlist; it is a session id). Its environment read is now bounded to 1 MiB, and any failure means "no explicit resume".
  • Idle TUIs release their lock. dsh disposes an idle session and closes its session.lock. A lock-free dsh that started before the Ovis server, or in the same clock tick, is therefore not shown as a new empty chat after a server restart; it uses the terminal fallback until its next message.
  • Failed turns. A turn that ended with a provider error before any reply now shows "Turn ended: error" (seen live: a proxy 429).
  • Tests and fixtures. Two sanitized real fixtures: server/fixtures/dsh-headless-0.2.1-rc.5.jsonl and dsh-tui-0.17.0-dsh-0.2.1-rc.5.jsonl, with paths replaced and the system prompt and runtime injections elided. Each is replayed as one zstd frame per append. Each fix has a test that failed first.

Binding stays Linux-only: procfs, same OS user.

Real-TUI QA

This used an isolated herdr session (herdr --session …), an Ovis server on this branch with a fresh state dir on 127.0.0.1, and an isolated DSH_HOME. Every row is GET /api/pane/conversation on a live pane.

Pane herdr label Result
dsh-tui-pi, two exchanges incl. a bash tool call none dsh-transcript: user, assistant (text, tool ok, text), user, assistant
dsh-tui in the same folder, own session dsh-tui dsh-transcript, its own session (not the other pane's)
dsh-tui fresh, before / after first message dsh-tui empty chat, then its chat
dsh-tui after /new, before / after first message dsh-tui terminal (lock dropped), then the new session
dsh-tui --resume <id> dsh-tui its session, bound within 3 s
headless mid-turn / after exit none dsh-transcript with the tool call, then scrollback
dsh --profile web none scrollback
node -e … dsh --profile tui (another program) none scrollback
plain shell none scrollback
dsh-tui-pi turn ended by a proxy 429 none "Turn ended: error"

Validation

  • bun run check fast: passed.
  • bun test server/dsh.test.ts server/dsh-http.test.ts server/omp-process.test.ts: 44 pass.
  • Reviews: an omo code-review agent approved (its MEDIUM and LOW items are fixed). Codex gpt-6.1-terra took three rounds: four MEDIUM findings, all fixed with failing-first tests; then the equal-tick boundary of the restart rule, fixed the same way; then approval, with one test-coverage LOW also fixed. Not run: the browser/integration lanes and native Windows; binding is Linux-only.

Explanation

The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation, and is detailed. The Change section states the problem (DeepSeek Harness falls back to the terminal in the chat lens), the Linux-only native reader, session binding by the held session.lock, supported log formats, the empty-chat and fallback rules, and the UI scope. The Validation section lists commands run (bun run check fast, targeted bun test files), the test coverage areas, skipped checks (browser/integration lanes, native Windows), and a real-TUI QA table. A maintainer update adds detection and binding changes that match the code summaries. The template asks for a linked issue for features. The description does not link one, and it references PR #2452 without saying what it is. The description is long and mixes a maintainer update into the Change section, but the required information is present.

Thanks @jokkopucko, this is a careful reader. Merge-pass review of 14a9810 found no HIGH and one MEDIUM. Fork CI is approved.

MEDIUM: the log path is not pinned to dsh's store (server/dsh.ts:35-39). Every other chat reader resolves its transcript and then checks it against the agent's own store root (authorizedTranscript, server/transcript-store.ts). This one accepts any same-user <uuid>/session.v4.jsonl* next to whatever session.lock the foreground dsh holds. A pane can then show a paired device (watch-only included) a log from outside the store. Please resolve the real path and require it to be under the real path of dsh's sessions directory. From what I can find, that is ~/.dsh/sessions/.

Question: does dsh let a user move that directory (an env var, or a config setting)? If it does, the pin should follow the same setting. That's why I'm asking rather than pushing the change myself. If it doesn't, say so and I'll push the pin and a test on your branch.

LOW, no change needed:

  • boundProcesses (dsh.ts:13) is module state shared between tests. A reset helper for tests would keep the empty-chat case independent of test order.
  • The agent label in src/lib/compose.ts diverges from AGENT_LABELS.
  • The ETag digests the whole decoded text on every read.

This is a new feature, so the maintainer decides whether it goes in. I'll pass the verdict on.

194-197: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Avoid repeating DSH projection work on each refresh.

dshConversation rereads the bounded transcript and repeats decompression, JSONL projection, text hashing, and cursor serialization for every request. Frequent refreshes can therefore add substantial CPU and I/O cost as the transcript grows.

Add a per-path cache for a content-validated projection. Use file metadata only as a candidate key, then validate the current transcript content before reuse. Metadata alone is unsafe because an in-place rewrite can preserve the metadata tuple while changing turns, cursor history, and the ETag version. Reuse only validated turns, history, and version, and memoize each cursor digest once per request. If validation still reads or decompresses the transcript, this optimization safely removes repeated parsing and projection work without changing cursor or ETag behavior.

Address the review MEDIUM: a same-uid foreground dsh process could bind an adjacent session log outside the agent store. Match upstream DSH_HOME resolution and require canonical sessions-store containment for plain and compressed logs. Cover outside-store logs and symlink escapes, and keep the unit and HTTP fixtures under their isolated configured stores.

FYI @jokkopucko: I didn't need your answer after all. dsh's own package settles it: @deepseek-ai/dsh-home-paths lib/index.js resolves the store as ~/.dsh/sessions, or <DSH_HOME>/sessions for a non-blank, tilde-expanded DSH_HOME. I pushed a81e2b6 on your branch. It canonicalizes the chosen log and requires it to be inside that store, compared by path the way authorizedTranscript does it, not by text prefix. A log or symlink outside the store uses the terminal fallback. The DSH_HOME read is the Ovis server's own environment, so a store moved only in the dsh shell falls back too. The HTTP and reader fixtures now set DSH_HOME to their temp dir; bun run check fast passes. The merge itself waits for the maintainer's go on the feature.

Thanks for a81e2b6. I retained that commit and its outside-store and symlink regression cases, and extended the fix to follow the foreground process and pin file identity.

Yes. dsh supports moving its home with DSH_HOME. I checked the published package source cached locally for @deepseek-ai/dsh-home-paths 0.1.7-rc.1 and 0.2.1-rc.2. resolveDshHome uses an explicit configured path first, then a nonblank DSH_HOME, then ~/.dsh; it expands ~ paths. @deepseek-ai/dsh-base 0.1.7-rc.1 configures session-persistence-jsonl with root: !!js dshHomePath('sessions').

There is also a plugin-level override: @deepseek-ai/dsh-session-persistence-jsonl exposes a required root config field. Cordis profile or home patches can therefore select a different persistence root. A fixed ~/.dsh/sessions pin would miss DSH_HOME, and DSH_HOME alone does not describe every possible Cordis configuration.

The additional fix reads only routing variables from the foreground process through Ovis's existing bounded process probe. It pins both the log and the sessions directory to their real paths, accepts only files inside the process's DSH_HOME/sessions (or HOME/.dsh/sessions), and checks file identity again for conversation and tool-output reads. Absolute and ~/ DSH_HOME values work. An unreadable environment, a relative DSH_HOME, or a custom Cordis root outside that store uses terminal fallback. Ovis does not evaluate Cordis patches.

Regression tests cover outside and sibling-prefix paths, file and directory symlink escapes, linked store roots, file replacement, and the foreground process's DSH_HOME. HTTP tests cover fallback and tool-output refusal when the store is wrong or process-info fails. The HTTP fixture now stubs herdrRpc. Process-binding test state is reset between cases. The changelog entry also fits the required width.

Validation: bun run check fast passed, including typecheck, production build, and 9,250 unit tests (41 skipped). Commit: 741a265.

Checked against dsh 0.2.1-rc.5, dsh-tui 0.17.0 and dsh-tui-pi 2.34.0:
- accept headless session-<uuid> lock directories beside the TUIs' bare UUIDs
- match the dsh launcher strictly (node + .../bin/dsh or the package entry,
a chat profile) and dsh-tui's host process, which holds the lock
- require exactly one locked session, and the locked session's own log
- treat headless --session-id and DSH_TUI_RESUME_SESSION as explicit resumes;
bound the helper's environment read to 1 MiB
- show no new empty chat for a lock-free dsh older than this server: idle
  TUIs release their lock
- show a turn that failed before any reply
- add sanitized real headless and dsh-tui fixtures

herdr labels dsh-tui panes `dsh-tui` and leaves other dsh TUIs unlabeled;
nothing is labeled `dsh`. Route the `dsh-tui` label, and a foreground dsh
found by the process_info probe an unlabeled pane already makes, to the dsh
reader. A dsh pane asks process_info once per lookup, shared with omo.

Review record for 7847298. CodeRabbit skipped this PR, so these reviews stand in for it.

omo code-review agent: APPROVE

  • MEDIUM: the launcher match was looser than "node + …/bin/dsh", and Debian's /usr/bin/dsh matched. Fixed: node is required, the path is …/bin/dsh or the package entry, and negative tests were added.
  • LOW: --profile=<name> was not recognised. Fixed.
  • LOW: two resume assertions also passed on any error. Fixed: they now assert ConversationUnavailable and not ConversationNotStarted.
  • LOW: double blank lines. Fixed.
  • LOW: other option orders (--patch x --profile tui) and custom profile names. Left as is. The unrecognised forms keep the terminal fallback, and a custom profile is treated as a chat; this is noted in docs/dsh.md.

Codex gpt-6.1-terra, three rounds: CHANGES, CHANGES, APPROVE

  1. MEDIUM: launcher matched any path ending in dsh. Fixed, as above.
  2. MEDIUM: a log symlinked into another session of the same store was accepted. Fixed: the authorized log must sit in the locked session's own directory. Test added.
  3. MEDIUM: ambiguity was counted only after authorization. Fixed: every locked session counts, readable or not, and more than one means terminal fallback. Test added.
  4. MEDIUM: the probe read the whole /proc/<pid>/environ unbounded. Fixed: a 1 MiB bounded read, and an oversized environment gives no answer. Test added.
  5. MEDIUM (round 2): the restart rule used >= on start ticks, so a dsh started in the same clock tick as Ovis counted as new. Fixed: strict >, with an equal-tick test.
  6. LOW (round 3): the --resume assertion no longer exercised the resume guard. Fixed: those tests pass an earlier server clock.

Every fix has a test that failed before it. bun run check fast passed on the pushed tree, and the required checks pass on this head.

Merging 80eeead on the maintainer's go, thank you @jokkopucko! On Linux, chat reads native DeepSeek Harness v4 conversations for the dsh terminal UIs (dsh-tui, dsh-tui-pi) and headless runs: the pane is bound to the one session whose session.lock its foreground dsh holds (never by folder or time), plain and Zstandard logs are read with 16 MiB bounds, and anything missing, ambiguous or damaged falls back to the terminal. What we changed on this branch: (1) the log must sit inside dsh's own store (from the dsh process's HOME/DSH_HOME), pinned by device and inode on every read (a81e2b6, then reworked by you in 741a265); (2) lane dsh-real checked it against a real dsh 0.2.1-rc.5 with dsh-tui 0.17.0 and dsh-tui-pi 2.34.0 (7847298): the dsh-tui label and unlabeled panes found by the existing process probe route to dsh, a strict launcher match, session- lock folders, exactly one held lock that must be the log's own, explicit resumes, a bounded environment read, a turn that failed before any reply, and sanitized real fixtures; (3) the merge pass's wrong-session review then made it fail closed (f37716d; main then merged in as 80eeead, keeping #2420's Kiro check after dsh): a dsh in the pane that cannot be fully read blocks the binding unless it exited, a gjc pane running a dsh child keeps gjc's chat, a rejected linked log never falls back to an older one, and an unknown server start never shows a new empty chat. Known limit: the launcher is recognized by its path shape (node + .../bin/dsh or the package entry), not a signature.
