feat(terminal): draw sixel and iTerm2 inline pictures behind a Settings toggle - #2871
Settings > Terminal > Pictures in the terminal (off by default, per device) draws the sixel and
iTerm2 inline images a pane program prints (imgcat, img2sixel, chafa -f sixel|iterm, yazi
previews), using xterm.js's official @xterm/addon-image 0.9.0.
Which runtimes deliver the bytes (measured first)
An isolated herdr 0.9.5 session and an isolated hc 0.1.17 core each ran a test program that prints
one sixel (DCS q), one iTerm2 (OSC 1337;File=) and one kitty (APC G) picture after the client
attached. The raw attach output was then counted:
attach stream
sixel
iTerm2
kitty
herdr terminal attach (also when the outer DA1 claims sixel and kitty answers OK)
0

0
hc terminal.attach, live

hc terminal.attach, re-attach snapshot

So the feature works on a PC running herdr-core, which the desktop app bundles. herdr redraws the
pane from its own grid and drops the pictures. On either runtime, a picture is gone once the pane is
drawn again. The Settings description says so.
How
src/lib/terminalImages.ts: useTerminalImages(terminal, enabled, coarse) loads the addon with a
dynamic import() the first time the setting is on, and keeps that one addon for the terminal's
life. A cell keeps its picture's id, and a fresh addon numbers from 1 again, so a reloaded addon
drew its first picture into old cells. Turning the setting off clears the pictures
(reset() keeps the id counter), takes new sixel/iTerm2 sequences before the addon sees them, and
restores the window reports. A pointer (touch/mouse) change only moves the stored cap.
The addon is its own chunk (57 KB, 18 KB gzip), so nothing is downloaded until the setting is on.
Memory caps: desk 16 MP per picture / 64 MB stored. Touch screen 4 MP per picture / 16 MB stored /
8 MB per sequence. The addon's defaults are 16 MP / 128 MB.
Query replies: hc 0.1.17 answers a program's DA1 itself (?62;22c, no sixel) and passes XTSMGRAPHICS
(CSI ? Pi;Pa;Pv S) on to its viewers. With two browsers on one pane, the addon's XTSMGRAPHICS answer
arrived after the program stopped waiting and landed in its next read. That was measured with a probe
program, so XTSMGRAPHICS stays unanswered, as it is without the addon. The addon's pixel-size reports
(CSI 14/16 t) stay on while the setting is on: the bridge passes the cell size to hc, which then
answers programs with the real size instead of 10x20. Turning the setting off restores the previous
window options.
Because hc's DA1 does not advertise sixel, tools that pick a format from DA1 need it named
(chafa -f sixel, img2sixel, imgcat). Advertising it would be a change in hc.
scrollback: 0 and the attach-stream rules are unchanged. The addon only draws what the stream
carries.
CSP: script-src 'self' 'wasm-unsafe-eval'. The addon's sixel decoder is WebAssembly. Without
this token Chrome refuses to compile it and sixel is silently dropped (iTerm2 decodes through the
browser's own image decoder). 'wasm-unsafe-eval' allows compiling WebAssembly only. It does not
allow eval or string-to-script.
kitty's graphics protocol is not supported by @xterm/addon-image. Options, none taken here:
wait for upstream xterm.js support; write our own APC G handler (placement, deletion and
Unicode-placeholder semantics, considerable work); or hand kitty panes to the real terminal.
Validation
Real server (OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core, isolated hc core and mkdtemp state, loopback) in
headless Chrome under the real CSP. With the setting on, the image layer painted exactly 11904
pixels (96x60 sixel + 96x64 iTerm2 = 11904) at 1280x800 and at 390x844 touch, with no page or CSP
errors. With the setting off there is no image layer. The kitty line stays blank.
XTSMGRAPHICS/DA1 probe in an hc pane, with no browser, one browser and two browsers attached (setting
on). Before the fix, two browsers leaked a late ?1;0;256S into the next read. After the fix, all three
cases match the no-browser answers.
Settings UI: switching pictures off removes the image layer (1 -> 0), switching on again is stored,
and there are no page or console errors. The row was checked at 1280 and 390 widths.
scripts/terminal-images-demo-regression.ts (browser lane) covers: a picture is drawn; it goes when
the setting is off; nothing is drawn while off; on again, the next picture is drawn only where it
was printed, and the first picture's cells hold no picture. On the previous version it fails
(the top left cell holds no picture ([0,0,255])).
Phone memory: 20 iTerm2 pictures of 1024x1024 (80 MB decoded) into a 390x844 touch page. Renderer
RSS grew 29 MB with the setting on, against 20 MB for the same output with it off.

…gs toggle
herdr-core passes a pane program's sixel and iTerm2 sequences on byte for byte; herdr redraws
the pane from its own grid and drops them. Settings > Terminal > Pictures in the terminal (off by
default, per device) loads @xterm/addon-image lazily, with smaller caps on a touch screen. The
page policy gains wasm-unsafe-eval for its sixel decoder.

New Features
Added an opt-in “Pictures in the terminal” setting, off by default. On PCs running herdr-core, it displays Sixel and iTerm2 inline images printed by terminal programs.
Images are cleared when the pane is redrawn. herdr does not pass images through, and Kitty graphics are not supported.
Documentation
Updated the terminal settings guidance to describe the new option and its availability.
Adds an off-by-default, device-scoped terminal image setting. When enabled, the terminal image addon handles sixel and iTerm2 images. A browser regression checks image display when the setting is toggled.

Explanation
The title "feat(terminal): draw sixel and iTerm2 inline pictures behind a Settings toggle" names the main change: sixel and iTerm2 inline image rendering in the terminal, gated by an off-by-default Settings toggle. The changeset adds the toggle (SettingsDialog, settings.ts), the terminalImages.ts hook wired into PaneTerminal, the @xterm/addon-image dependency, and the CSP change. The title is specific and accurate, and it is concise.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the What, How, and Validation sections, which match the template's Change and Validation headings. The Change section describes the problem (pane programs' images are redrawn away by herdr) and the resulting behavior. The Validation section lists the checks run with results, including the commands and browser regression coverage. Two gaps remain. The template asks for a linked issue where a maintainer agreed to the feature, and the description has none. The description also defers the bun run check fast outcome to 'see the comment below', and that outcome is not in the supplied comments. Both are non-critical relative to the rest of the description.

…ts when pictures turn off
hc answers DA1 itself and leaves XTSMGRAPHICS to its viewers: with two browsers on one pane, the
image addon's answer arrived after the program stopped waiting and landed in its next read
(measured on hc 0.1.17). The addon's pixel size reports are put back as they were once the setting
is turned off.
HIGH: duplicate or late XTSMGRAPHICS replies with two browsers on one pane. Reproduced with a probe program on hc 0.1.17: a late ?1;0;256S landed in the program's next read. XTSMGRAPHICS is now left unanswered, as it is without the addon. After the fix, the 0, 1 and 2 browser runs all match.
LOW: the addon's window-size reports stayed on after the setting was turned off. The previous windowOptions are now restored.
Not changed, recorded here (MEDIUM, not reproduced):
DA1: the bridge consumes the browser's DA1 reply, but hc answers the program itself (?62;22c, measured), so sixel is not advertised. Tools need the format named (chafa -f sixel). Advertising sixel would be an hc change.
A picture printed before the lazily loaded addon is installed (or before its WebAssembly sixel decoder is ready) is not drawn. The window is the first moments after a pane mounts with the setting on. A re-attach snapshot carries no pictures anyway.
Turning the setting off while an iTerm2 picture is still decoding (async createImageBitmap) may let the disposed addon place that one picture. This needs a toggle within the decode time of a single picture.
…ke an old picture's cells
A cell keeps the id of the picture drawn in it and a new image addon numbers its pictures from 1
again: turning pictures off and on (or a pointer change, which reloaded the addon for its caps)
drew the next picture into the cells an old picture 1 had left. The addon now lives as long as its
terminal; off clears its pictures and takes new ones before it sees them, and a pointer change only
moves the stored cap. scripts/terminal-images-demo-regression.ts fails on the previous version.

Add sixel pictures to the terminal images regression.
The regression prints only iTerm2 PNG pictures. No browser check prints a sixel sequence, and scripts/ci-browser.sh runs this script as the only terminal-image entry. A change that breaks sixel rendering can pass CI.
The regression server also sends no Content-Security-Policy header. The pixel check therefore does not run under the production policy, so it cannot detect a policy change that blocks WebAssembly. The directive test in server/static.test.ts remains the only guard for that policy text.
Add a sixel picture that the regression prints and checks. Serve the page with the production policy. Print the sixel only after its decoder is ready. The comment at scripts/terminal-images-demo-regression.ts:52-56 says the decoder starts after the addon loads, so the existing wait for the addon chunk may not cover it. Keep the existing iTerm2 checks.

record, following the separate-key pattern used by terminalMirrorWrap and

older tab’s whole-record write cannot reset the independently stored choice, and
exclude terminalImages from the whole-record save.
Review comments at @src/lib/terminalImages.ts:
- Line 78: Update useTerminalImages so the lazy-loaded ImageAddon uses the
latest coarse pointer value when the import callback creates it, rather than the
value captured by the initial effect. Keep a ref synchronized with coarse and
read it in the callback when building terminalImageOptions.
- Around line 96-99: Update the terminalImages useEffect flow so a change from
fine to coarse pointer applies the 2048 × 2048 pixel cap to the loaded addon.
Since the addon has no pixelLimit setter, establish a safe recreation approach
that preserves picture-ID reuse behavior before recreating it; if that cannot be
done safely, document the limitation rather than changing storageLimit alone.
- Around line 60-64: Guard the image decode completion path so an iTerm2 picture
started before `present.addon.reset()` cannot reach `ImageStorage.addImage`
after pictures are disabled. Ensure the completion path checks the current
enabled state before storing or displaying the decoded picture, while preserving
normal handling when pictures are enabled.
- Around line 73-79: Update the lazy ImageAddon initialization around the
@xterm/addon-image import so terminal output is not delivered until
terminal.loadAddon(addon) completes; either hold and release output frames after
activation or complete addon loading before starting the attach. Ensure pictures
emitted during initialization are preserved.

… two image-addon races
An older tab's whole-record save no longer turns the setting off: it lives in ovis:terminal-images,
as the other newer device settings do. Turning pictures off clears them again once the parser has
finished what came before (an iTerm2 picture still decoding places itself when done), and the
addon takes the caps of the pointer at the moment it loads.
Local merge gate (owner-approved): reviewed head (omo CLEAR, threads resolved) with bun run check fast passing; held until the account PR #2867 landed and it still merges cleanly. Merged without waiting for GitHub CI.

## What
Settings > Terminal > **Draw with libghostty** (off by default, this
device only). On a PC that runs herdr-core, as the desktop app does, a
pane is drawn by [libghostty-vt](https://github.com/ghostty-org/ghostty)
(Ghostty's terminal core, MIT) instead of xterm.js's own text layer, and
the pictures a program sends with the **Kitty graphics protocol** are
drawn: `chafa -f kitty`, `timg -pk`, `kitten icat
--transfer-mode=stream`.
xterm stays the engine underneath: it still takes every key, IME
syllable, paste, click, selection, link, search and scroll, and still
answers the program's queries. Its text and cursor layer is hidden;
libghostty draws the same bytes, in the same order, as plain DOM rows
over xterm's screen at xterm's cell size, plus a canvas per Kitty
placement (below or above the text, as Kitty's z says). libghostty
answers nothing: a reply it made to a replayed stream would reach the
program as typing (herdr-core already answers size queries itself).
This complements #2871 (sixel and iTerm2 through `@xterm/addon-image`,
which has no Kitty graphics): libghostty has no sixel, the addon has no
Kitty, and the two layers do not overlap.
## How
- `src/lib/ghostty/ghostty-vt.wasm`: libghostty-vt at ghostty e95bed6
for wasm32, rebuilt by `scripts/ghostty-vt/build.sh` with
`kitty-on-wasm.patch`. Upstream turns Kitty graphics off on freestanding
wasm; the patch turns it on, refuses the file / temp-file /
shared-memory media (no filesystem in a browser), and links ghostty's
bundled wuffs PNG decoder. 1.11 MB (345 KB brotli). The build now writes
.br/.gz copies beside it, but the server still serves precompressed
copies for js/css only, so today the module goes out uncompressed
(follow-up below). Notices for ghostty, wuffs and uucode in
THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
- `src/lib/ghostty/capture.ts`: from the terminal's mount (setting on),
every byte xterm is given is held; once the server lists its features
and says `terminal-history` (herdr-core), the overlay module is loaded
and starts from those bytes. herdr's own server, a module that fails to
load, or more than 32 MB held leave the terminal to xterm and never
fetch the module.
- `src/lib/ghostty/vt.ts`, `overlay.ts`: the wasm wrapper (rows as
styled runs, the render state's Kitty image list, palette from the xterm
theme, scroll sync with xterm's own herdr-core history) and the DOM
layer. Each cell carries its own grapheme and width, so a combining mark
never shifts a wide cell.
- CSP: `script-src 'self' 'wasm-unsafe-eval'` (the same line #2871
adds), so the page may compile WebAssembly; no string eval.
- The choice applies to a pane the next time it is opened (the
description says so): libghostty must see the stream from its first
byte.
Design reference: Ghostty's own split of a terminal core (libghostty-vt)
from the renderer an app draws with, rather than a second terminal
widget; everything already built on xterm keeps working while the
drawing moves. Clean-room from ghostty's public MIT source.
## Validation
- `bun run check fast`: pass (exit 0) on 312eb94 (merged with
origin/main 22a4b33, #2871 and #2937 included). `check full` not run
here; CI runs the browser lane.
- `bun scripts/terminal-ghostty-demo-regression.ts` (new, added to
`scripts/ci-browser.sh`): a herdr-core pane is drawn from its first byte
(printed before the module loaded), a Kitty picture is drawn at its row
and goes on `a=d`, a wide cell after a combining accent stays the CJK
character (fails on the first head), ANSI red under a palette that names
no ANSI colours is xterm's red (fails before 8189fde), typing still
reaches the pane through xterm; on herdr's own server and with the
setting off nothing is drawn by libghostty and the `.wasm` is never
fetched.
- `bun test src/lib/settings.test.ts server/static.test.ts
server/static-encoding.test.ts scripts/compressed-assets.test.ts
scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts`: pass.
- Manual, isolated hc 0.1.17 core (own HC_SESSION, XDG dirs, socket) +
this branch's server on loopback, headless Chromium at 1280x800 and
390x844: chafa / timg / icat (stream) pictures drawn; with the setting
off xterm draws none; resize (rows match xterm), wheel through history
(top 10 rows identical to xterm's), drag selection + copy + Quote,
Korean text input, `less` alternate screen and back.
- Known, not in this PR: `kitten icat` in its default mode gives up
because herdr-core answers the DA1 query on the server before the
browser's Kitty reply arrives, and hc gives the pty no pixel size; those
are herdr-core-side.
## Follow-ups (this PR is step 0)
The end state is one rendering path: libghostty draws every terminal, on
herdr-core and on herdr, and xterm's drawing code goes.
1. **Default on for herdr-core** once: the two renderers match row text
and cell colours across the themes (a two-renderer browser regression);
light-theme contrast correction matches xterm's minimumContrastRatio
4.5; cursor and selection positions match for emoji, CJK, combining
marks, Nerd icons and box glyphs; link hover underline and cursor blink
are drawn.
2. **herdr mode too, then drop xterm's drawing**, gated on:
- serve the module's precompressed copy (server/static.ts compresses
js/css only today);
- phone first load: the extra 345 KB brotli adds at most 0.5 s to the
first terminal text on an emulated 4G phone with a 4x CPU slowdown
(median of 5, off vs on);
- repeat loads: 0 wasm bytes on the second visit and across a build that
keeps the module (the service worker serves `/assets/` cache-first and
carries a same-named file into the new build's cache);
- iOS long-press select and copy on the libghostty rows (iOS Simulator
script);
- screen readers: VoiceOver and NVDA read new output and walk the rows
(the layer is aria-hidden today);
- low-end phone frame time under runaway output at a 6x CPU slowdown: no
more 50 ms stalls than xterm, p95 frame gap at most 33 ms.
Then input, selection and search move to libghostty's key encoder,
selection and search APIs, and xterm's parser and renderer are removed.
