fix(link): take the code back on SIGTERM/SIGHUP, cancel only its own pairing, keep the listing over a lost DELETE - #3191
Three gaps in link / link --code (follow-up from the review of #3187):
SIGTERM/SIGHUP now take the code back.scripts/plugin.ts aborts the command on SIGINT, SIGTERM and SIGHUP, so the finally that calls POST /api/devices/pair/cancel runs for a supervisor's stop or a closed terminal too. When the checkout hands link to an updated release, SIGTERM/SIGHUP sent to the wrapper alone are passed on to that child.
Cancel is bound to the command's own pairing.link --code sends { "code": "<six digits>" }, the code its last QR offer carried. POST /api/devices/pair/cancel ends the pending pairing only when that code matches (constant-time compare) and answers { ok, cancelled }. A pairing started since in Settings or on another device stays valid. Without a body (older callers, or a run that never got an offer back) it ends whatever is pending, as before. A malformed code is a 400.
A lost DELETE answer no longer drops the PC from the account list. During renewal, the listing is marked for restoration beforeDELETE /v1/pcs/:id, so if the service applied the DELETE but the response was lost, the finally (and the poll loop) put the listing back.
The two LOW items in the issue (fallback wording against an older server; an issuance delayed past cleanup) are not changed here.
Tests (failing first)
On main, 6 of these fail; with this branch all pass:
scripts/plugin-link.test.ts: the cancel carries the last shown code; a renewal whose DELETE was applied but answered with a connection reset leaves the PC listed; a spawned plugin.ts link --code sent SIGTERM / SIGHUP (after the code is on screen) posts the bound cancel and exits 0; a SIGTERM to the wrapper reaches the updated release's copy.
server/device-access.contract.test.ts: cancel with a stale code leaves the newer pairing redeemable (cancelled: false); cancel with the pending code ends it.
The spawn-based signal tests are skipped on Windows (no POSIX signals).
Validation
bun run check fast: pass (unit 12801 pass, 0 fail).
bun test scripts/plugin-link.test.ts server/device-access.contract.test.ts server/devices.test.ts: 95 pass.
Not run: full integration/browser suites (no UI change).

Bug Fixes
Ending link --code with Ctrl+C, SIGTERM, SIGHUP, or an error now cancels only the pairing code displayed by the command. Pairings started separately in Settings or on another device remain active.
If a device-listing renewal succeeds but its response is lost, the PC remains listed in the account.
Documentation
Updated pairing guidance to describe cancellation behavior and supported exit signals.
The link command now binds pairing cancellation to the displayed code, handles SIGTERM and SIGHUP, and tracks account listings through renewal when a DELETE response is lost.
The cancellation endpoint accepts an optional six-digit code and reports whether it cancelled the matching pending pairing. The contract test checks that cancelling an older code leaves a newer pairing active.
CLI pairing lifecycle and signals scripts/plugin-link.ts, scripts/plugin.ts, scripts/plugin-link.test.ts, docs/relay.md
The CLI passes its displayed QR code to cancellation. SIGINT, SIGTERM, and SIGHUP abort the local flow, and SIGTERM and SIGHUP are forwarded to the delegated release. Tests cover code-specific cleanup and signal handling.
Account listing renewal state scripts/plugin-link.ts, scripts/plugin-link.test.ts, changelog.d/link-code-take-back.md
Renewal retains the prior listing until the replacement PUT succeeds. The test covers a lost DELETE response and verifies that the PC remains listed.
devswha/ovis#3187: Implements link and link --code, the command flows changed here.
devswha/ovis#2533: Starts and refreshes pairing codes in Settings, which is relevant to preserving separately started pairings.
devswha/ovis#2883: Binds typed relay codes to pending pairing codes, which is relevant to code-specific cancellation.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review f9def
The changes improve cleanup and listing recovery, but narrow cancellation gaps remain after renewal failures or terminal hangup. Merge risk is low with owner awareness; the pairing-isolation guarantees should also be qualified.

Explanation
[ #3190 ] Signal handling and tests cover SIGTERM and SIGHUP. Renewal marks the listing for restoration before DELETE and tests a lost response. Cancellation does not use the requested issuance ID. If a pairing starts elsewhere before the CLI receives an offer, shown is null and cleanup cancels that newer pairing without a code. The two lower-priority gaps also remain: the older-server fallback reports success when cancellation fails, and a delayed issuance can complete after cleanup.
Resolution
Bind cleanup to a unique issuance ID, including before an offer is received, and test that a newer pairing survives. Report fallback cancellation failures accurately. Prevent or clean up issuance that completes after cleanup, and add regression tests.

Review round (omo + Codex at f9def25) and what changed
Fixed in the follow-up commit
HIGH (Codex) / MEDIUM (omo): a doubled SIGHUP/SIGTERM could kill link mid-cleanup. A terminal hangup reaches the whole process group, and the checkout's wrapper also forwards it to the release's copy. With process.once, the second signal ended the process before the cancel landed. Now every SIGINT/SIGTERM/SIGHUP is caught (the abort is idempotent). The signal test sends the signal twice; with once it fails.
MEDIUM (Codex): SIGTERM could leave link hanging on a stalled account-service call. After the first signal, cleanup gets a 10 s hard deadline (setTimeout(process.exit, 10_000).unref()).
MEDIUM (Codex) / LOW (omo): an interrupted renewal cancelled the previous code and left the new pairing live.shown is reset at the start of every round, so until the round's offer names its code, cleanup ends whatever is pending (the pre-PR behaviour, limited to that window). New test: a renewal whose offer fails sends an unbound cancel.
LOW (omo): a lost renewal DELETE still ended link with exit 1. When the DELETE has gone out, the poll loop keeps waiting and puts the listing back, as it already did for a failed PUT. The test now expects exit 0 and checks that the PC is listed on the next round.
Not changed (residual, noted here)
Codex MEDIUM: a pairing started elsewhere in the few ms between /api/relay/code and /api/relay/offer, or during the in-flight first request, can still be cancelled. Closing it fully would need /api/relay/code to return its bound six-digit code (a contract change). It is not a regression: before this PR every exit cancelled whatever was pending.
Codex MEDIUM: an older server with /api/devices/pair/cancel ignores { code }. link runs the copy that matches the running server (activePluginScript, as phone-setup does), so a new client against an old server is not the normal path. The worst case is the pre-PR behaviour.
Codex MEDIUM: a DELETE that the service applies after the restoring PUT. This depends on the account service completing requests out of order; not reproduced against it.
Codex LOW: the contract test can collide when two random six-digit codes are equal (~1e-6 per run).
Validation for the follow-up: bun test scripts/plugin-link.test.ts server/device-access.contract.test.ts server/devices.test.ts (96 pass), signal tests --rerun-each 10 (30/30), bun run check fast (see the commit).

Review comments at @changelog.d/link-code-take-back.md:
- Around line 3-4: Qualify the pairing-cleanup guarantee in the changelog and
relay documentation: clarify that taking back only the displayed code is not
guaranteed when the updated CLI connects to an older server, which may ignore
the supplied code and cancel a newer pairing during cleanup.
- Around line 3-4: Update the `link --code` cancellation and cleanup flow to
identify the specific pairing generation it started, rather than canceling by
the shared six-digit code. Ensure stopping the command cancels only its own
pairing and leaves a newer pairing with the same code running.
Review comments at @scripts/plugin-link.ts:
- Around line 231-233: Update the renewal flow around `service.deletePc` and
`putListing` so a DELETE error is treated as pending restoration rather than
terminating `link`. Keep retrying the PUT until restoration succeeds, and do not
sign out while it remains unsuccessful.
- Line 181: Track the newly minted renewal pairing’s identity before requesting
its offer, and ensure the cleanup path using takeBack cancels that pairing
rather than the previous one if the offer request fails. Propagate cleanup
failure so the command does not report success while the new pairing remains
active.
Review comments at @scripts/plugin.ts:
- Around line 889-892: Keep the SIGHUP forwarding handler registered until the
release process has completed cleanup; update the signal-handler lifecycle
around the child spawn and `child.kill(signal)` forwarding so cleanup does not
remove or restore the handler prematurely. Preserve the existing SIGTERM
forwarding behavior.

Fixes link --code: cancel on every exit signal, bind cancel to its own pairing, keep the account listing on a lost DELETE #3190: link takes its pairing back on SIGINT, SIGTERM and SIGHUP; POST /api/devices/pair/cancel takes an optional {code} and ends only the matching pairing (constant-time compare; callers without a code unchanged); renewal keeps the listing over a lost DELETE. Pairing/contract change: the merge pass's own delta Codex pass found the route's guards unchanged and no HIGH. Recorded, not reproduced (MEDIUM): an interrupt before the QR offer arrives still cancels without a code, which can end a newer pairing started meanwhile; a SIGINT sent only to the checkout wrapper process (not the terminal's process group) is not forwarded to the active release. LOW: a lost-DELETE renewal can relist a PC removed elsewhere before the next poll. scripts/plugin.test.ts failed once on CI (server.log rotation, 160 ms) and passed alone twice (47/0) on main + this head; the PTY timing failure passed on rerun.
