fix(machines): cancel stops a follow-up update there, only the release shown, one job per PC when ssh cannot resolve - #3384
The rest of #3367 (items 2 to 5), after #3378 fixed item 1.
A cancel stops a follow-up update on that PC (item 2), and never reads as success.
A PC's own updater can now stop an install while it still builds: POST /api/updates/cancel, under the same rule as install (this PC's owner, or the connection server's bridge token).
The status advertises it as install_cancellable.
A cancelled install ends error with error_code: "update_cancelled". Nothing is installed, its offer is kept, and it is not counted as a failed release.
Once it restarts onto the new release, it is past stopping.
When an update asked for from here is cancelled once its install was requested there (an answer cut off included), in both own-update paths (followOwnUpdate and runOwnUpdate), that PC is asked to stop it. A cancelled setup asks over its own connection before that closes.
"Stopped" is claimed only once that PC's own status says update_cancelled, within a bounded wait; a 202 alone is not proof. Otherwise, as for an older Ovis that cannot or one already restarting, the words say it may still finish there. Those words stay on the PC (update_error) and on the job, never silence.
Only the release shown (item 3). The update after an install that found an older Ovis there installs only this app's release, the one the install's steps showed. Another release on offer by then is refused in plain words. A restart still binds the card's revision.
One job per PC when ssh cannot resolve (item 4, checked). The key was the ssh -G address, but when ssh -G failed it fell back to the address as written, so an alias could start a second job. An address that does not resolve now counts as possibly the same PC for the busy checks. "Already added here" still compares as written, so nothing is refused only because ssh -G failed.
ssh -G no longer holds the server up (item 5). It never runs on the request path. It resolves only in the background (Bun.spawn, killed outright with SIGKILL at 3 s, one run per address at a time), and a check finds the address kept or counts it unknown at once, so busy. Saved PCs are warmed once they are loaded, and an unresolved address is not cached, so it is asked again.
Tests
Each failed before its change:
updater.test.ts "cancels an install while it builds": a real release whose build never ends.
pc-update-cancel.test.ts: a stand-in PC over HTTP. One that can cancel is asked to, confirms update_cancelled, and the words say it stopped. One that cannot is not asked, and the words say it may still finish there.
pc-update-all.test.ts: a cancelled own update of a PC that cannot stop it now tells "may still finish it there" (it used to end in silence).
pc-install-routes.test.ts: "updates an older Ovis a fresh install finds already installed there, only to the release checked here" now refuses another release than this app's, and "counts a PC that ssh cannot resolve as possibly busy".
Review
Codex CLI adversarial review (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh, service_tier fast; route: axwith): BLOCK with 5 MEDIUM, all fixed in 137e812:
a cancelled setup closed its SSH connection before asking the PC;
an aborted status read or install request skipped the remote cancel;
a cancel's "continues" words were dropped;
a 202 was taken as proof that it stopped;
warming ran before the saved PCs loaded, and a miss resolved on the request path.
Validation
bun run check fast passed (unit 13338 pass / 0 fail. Install, update, updater and conventions suites: 197/197).

New Features
You can cancel an update while it is building. The app confirms when the remote PC has stopped it, or warns that it may continue if stopping was unsuccessful.
Bug Fixes
SSH installs now use the release shown in the app rather than switching to a different release.
Setup conflicts are detected more reliably when an SSH address cannot be resolved, without incorrectly treating the PC as already added.
SSH address lookups no longer keep the server running while they complete.
The changes add cancellation for remote updates that are still building, including status reporting when the remote install may continue. They also update SSH address resolution and PC matching, and validate the release offered during an install follow-up.
Changes: Remote update cancellation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Cancellation contract and updater behavior shared/update.ts, server/updater.ts, server/updater.test.ts
The update contract adds cancellation metadata and a cancel request. The updater accepts cancellation during a build and reports update_cancelled without recording the release as failed.
Cancellation API and supervisor routing server/update-api.ts, server/supervisor.ts, server/dispatch.ts, scripts/conventions.test.ts
The API accepts cancellation requests during cancellable builds. The supervisor routes cancel commands to the updater, and dispatch permits the authorized bridge route.
PC update cancellation and outcome reporting server/pc-update.ts, server/machines.ts, server/pc-update-cancel.test.ts, server/pc-update-all.test.ts
The PC connection flow requests cancellation when the remote status allows it. It reports whether the install stopped or may continue. Tests cover both outcomes.
SSH install matching and release selection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
SSH resolution and per-PC matching server/ssh-address.ts, server/pc-install.ts, server/machines.ts, server/pc-install-routes.test.ts
SSH address resolution runs asynchronously with background warming. PC matching uses resolved addresses when available and treats unresolved targets as possible matches by default. Install and setup checks use the shared comparison.
The install follow-up checks the latest offered version against the release shown by the app. Tests cover an eligible older release and a changed offer.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names three changes: cancel stops a follow-up update, only the shown release is installed, and one job per PC when SSH cannot resolve. The changeset covers all three, plus the background SSH resolution work. The title is long and lists several items, but it accurately reflects the main changes. It uses the conventional commit form.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation. The Change section describes the problem and resulting behavior in detail and links the parent issue #3367 and prior fix #3378. The Validation section lists the checks run (bun run check fast) with results, and it names the targeted tests. It does not mention contract-test coverage for the new HTTP route POST /api/updates/cancel, which the template asks for when HTTP changes are made. It also does not state whether full or other checks were skipped.

dori's review of 137e812 was BLOCK (2 MEDIUM, 4 LOW). All six are fixed in 9627aab:
MEDIUM: a first job for another PC was refused while its address was still being looked up.ssh -G's result now has three states: resolved, failed (asked again after 10 s), and not looked up yet. Only a failed one counts as possibly the same PC. One still being looked up is compared as written meanwhile, and an expired address stays in use while it is looked up again. Test: "starts a first job for another PC at once, while its address is still being looked up" (it fails on the previous head). The unresolved-alias test now waits for its lookup to fail first.
MEDIUM: the release-binding test reads this app's version from package.json instead of pinning 0.5.1.
LOW: the test SSH config's folder is removed (its cleanup came after a return).
LOW: a cancel that may go on there is told by a typed outcome (OwnUpdateCancelled with there: "continues"), never by matching its words.
LOW: a cancelled job whose connection is still closing, while it asks that PC to stop its update, keeps that PC busy until the connection has closed.
LOW: the duplicated doc comment is gone.
Process: this PR adds an HTTP contract (POST /api/updates/cancel, owner-only, the bridge token too) and needs a real review before merging, per AGENTS.md.
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13339 pass / 0 fail). Install, update, own-update and conventions suites: 143/143.

dori's review of 9627aab was BLOCK (3 MEDIUM, 3 LOW). Fixed in 2868457, each MEDIUM with a test that fails on the previous head:
MEDIUM: a cancelled setup still closed its connection before asking the PC. The setup's own ending (its catch) now waits for the request asking that PC to stop its update before it disconnects. Test (machines): "asks that PC to stop its update when the update is cancelled here while it builds, over the job's own connection". It cancels while the stand-in PC builds, checks that POST /api/updates/cancel reached the PC before any SSH close, and checks that nothing then says it may still finish.
MEDIUM: an alias typed for the first time slipped past while it resolved. An address not resolved yet, or that ssh -G failed on, is compared as written, except that a bare alias (a host with no dot, as an SSH config's Host names it) may be any PC and counts as busy. Test: "refuses an alias typed for the first time while its host has a job, before ssh has resolved it", with no pre-warming. A first job for another full host name is still never held up.
MEDIUM: no test for the cancelJob → ownCancel path. That is the machines test above.
LOW:ownCancel is cleared once the new bridge answers, so a late cancel no longer says the update may still finish.
LOW: an unresolvable full host name no longer holds up jobs on every other PC. Only a bare alias counts as possibly any PC.
LOW: a lookup that ends after forgetSshAddresses keeps nothing (a generation counter).
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13349 pass / 0 fail). Install, routes, own-update and cancel suites: 76/76 and 57/57.
dori's review of 2868457 was BLOCK (2 MEDIUM, LOWs). Fixed in 44a496c, each MEDIUM with a test that fails on the previous head:
MEDIUM: this server stopping asked other PCs to stop their updates. Only a cancel asked for here does now. cancelJob asks only while the manager runs, and followOwnUpdate asks only when its abort was such a cancel (its cancelled option). Shutdown or a self-update restart only ends the waiting, as before. Test: "never asks that PC to stop its update when this server stops (its own restart, say)".
MEDIUM: a dotted alias or an IP typed for the first time slipped past. The setup and install routes now resolve, off the event loop and within 3 s each, the address they name and those of the running jobs and saved PCs, before their checks run. Test through the HTTP route with nothing warmed first: new.home, a Host new.home alias for a PC being installed, is refused.
LOW: the remote cancel is armed only after a 202, or an answer the cancel cut off. It is never armed for an install the PC's own Settings started (update_busy).
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13351 pass / 0 fail). Install, routes, own-update, cancel and update-all suites: 135/135.
dori's review of 44a496c was BLOCK (2 MEDIUM, 3 LOW). Fixed in 6de951f, with tests that fail on the previous head:
MEDIUM: a cancel while the install request's answer was on its way sent no cancel. The remote cancel is now armed before the install request, since the PC may already have taken the install, and a refusal disarms it, since update_busy means an install the PC's own Settings started. Test: "asks that PC to stop an update cancelled while the answer to its install request is still on its way", where the stand-in PC holds its 202 back.
MEDIUM: POST /api/updates/cancel had no route tests. New tests cover:
its 202 and both 409s (update_not_cancellable and update_restart_required) in update-api.test.ts;
the bridge token in api.contract.test.ts: POST with no query only, refused while nothing can be cancelled, and 401 without a token;
the update-cancel IPC message read as a cancel (update-ipc.test.ts).
shared/protocol.ts now lists the route.
LOW: auto-update reinstalled a cancelled release. With auto-update on, the 5-minute timer no longer installs it again: only an install asked for again, or a newer release. The updater test covers it.
LOW:resolveFor validates the address first, ssh -G gets -- before the destination, and expired addresses are dropped as new answers come.
LOW: the release shown is compared by its rank, so a v prefix or build metadata is the same release.
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13345 pass / 0 fail). Own-update, install, routes, cancel, update-all, update-api and IPC suites: 149/149.
dori's review of 6de951f was BLOCK (1 MEDIUM, 1 LOW). Fixed in bab785d:
MEDIUM: a saved bare-alias PC was refused "already connecting" once its address was a minute old. A resolved address past its minute is still used while it is looked up again, so no address is dropped for its age any more. Only the least recently resolved go, once more than 512 are kept. POST /api/machines/:id/update now also resolves its PC's address and the running jobs' first, as the setup and install routes do. Test: "keeps a saved PC's resolved address past its minute while it is looked up again". It moves the clock 61 s on, looks up another address, and the saved bare alias still compares by its resolved address. It fails on the previous head.
LOW: the bridge token can cancel any install that builds. That is intended, and shared/protocol.ts now says so. The token belongs to this PC owner's own connection server, which may start an install there, and whose code asks to cancel only an install it requested (a refusal such as update_busy disarms it).
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13354 pass / 0 fail). Own-update, install, routes, cancel, update-all, update-api and IPC suites: 150/150.
dori's review of bab785d was BLOCK (1 MEDIUM, 5 LOW). Fixed in 5ea7c4b, with tests that fail on the previous head:
MEDIUM: a cancel while that PC's updater still checked what is on offer could not stop it. That is the most common moment to cancel. The updater now takes a cancel while an install request is still checking, and the run stops before anything is built (update_cancelled, its offer kept). POST /api/updates/cancel accepts it in that phase. Tests:
updater.test.ts: "stops an install cancelled while it still checks what is on offer, before anything is built". It uses a real release whose build never ends, and no build step is ever published.
update-api.test.ts: a cancel while checking gets a 202.
LOW: disabling or removing a PC never asks it to stop its own update. Only the person's Cancel does: the job's own, or the PC's cancel of its update. Test: "never asks that PC to stop its update when the PC is removed here".
LOW: an install request counts as asked only if it could have left. A cancel before the request is sent no longer says the update may still finish there.
LOW: a confirmed stop is told on the PC's card too ("that PC's own Ovis stopped it before it was installed"), not only the "may still finish" case.
LOW, answered: while a bare alias is unresolved, or ssh -G fails for it, it counts as possibly the same PC as any other, so it can hold up another setup while a job for it runs. That is the intended trade-off (dori: "acceptable as is"): a bare alias must never start a second job on the PC it names.
LOW, answered: a build run from source ahead of the last published release (such as the "herdr main" test app) refuses the follow-up update after an install that found an older Ovis, because no released version of this app matches the one shown. That is intended: only a release this app is, as shown, is installed. A restart still binds the card's revision.
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13355 pass / 0 fail). Own-update, install, routes, cancel, update-all, update-api and IPC suites: 151/151.
…e is bound to this app's build; tests run no ssh -G
Merge pass's review (Codex, route: axwith), reproduced HIGH:
- A remote cancel carried no identity, so it could stop another device's update. An install
request now gets its own id in its 202 (POST /api/updates/install -> { install_id }), carried
to the supervisor; POST /api/updates/cancel requires { install_id } (400 otherwise), and the
updater stops only the install that id names. The connection server cancels with the id its
202 gave; an answer cut off (no id) is told as may still finish, never cancelled blind.
MEDIUMs:
- An install's own Cancel is the person's cancel: its follow-up update there is asked to stop.
- The update after a fresh install or a replacement is bound to this app's own build
(OVIS_REVISION): another build of the same version the PC offers is refused, and a source
build says it cannot tell which build it showed.
- No test runs the account's ssh -G or reads its SSH config: under bun test the preload replaces
the resolver (server/ssh-address.ts) with addresses as written; the alias tests use an
ssh-config stand-in, and the output-limit test a fake ssh.
The merge pass's review round (Codex, route: axwith), rebased onto main now that #3378 has landed (c9d10a5). Each fix comes with a test that fails when that fix is removed:
HIGH (reproduced): a remote cancel carried no identity, so it could stop another device's update.
POST /api/updates/install now answers 202 with { accepted: true, install_id }. The id travels with the request to the supervisor.
POST /api/updates/cancel requires that { install_id }, and answers 400 invalid_update_cancel without one. The updater stops only the install the id names. Another device's install, or one started from the PC's own Settings, is never stopped.
The connection server cancels with the id its 202 gave. If that answer was cut off there is no id, so nothing is cancelled blind, and the words say the update may still finish there.
Tests:
updater.test.ts: another id never stops the install, and its own id does.
update-api.test.ts: a cancel with no id, or with a malformed one, gets a 400.
update-ipc.test.ts: a cancel message without an id is no cancel.
api.contract.test.ts: the bridge token cancels only with the id from its own install's 202.
machine-own-update.test.ts: a cancel while the 202 is still on its way sends no cancel, and says the update may still finish there.
MEDIUMs:
An install's own Cancel is the person's cancel, so its follow-up update there is asked to stop too. Test: "cancels an install's follow-up connect as the person's cancel".
The update after a fresh install or a replacement is bound to this app's own build (OVIS_REVISION). Another build of the same version that the PC offers is refused. A source build of this app says it cannot tell which build it showed. Test: the case "the same version, another build" in "updates an older Ovis a fresh install finds already installed there".
No test runs the account's ssh -G or reads its SSH config. Under bun test, the preload (scripts/test-herdr.ts) replaces the resolver in server/ssh-address.ts with addresses as written. The alias tests use an ssh-config stand-in, and the output-limit test uses a fake ssh. A guard test checks that the stand-in is in place.
The owner-model note (A) is by design, as the lead said. All review threads are resolved (0 open).
Validation: bun run check fast passed on the rebased head (unit 13430 pass / 0 fail).
… wrong or expired install_id is refused like no update
The lead's last round on #3384 (remote bundles can update the server apart from its supervisor):
- The supervisor IPC message is update-cancel-v2: a supervisor that cancelled without an id knew
update-cancel, and ignores the new name. The old name is never read as a cancel.
- POST /api/updates/cancel passes on only the install_id this server was last asked for, while
that install checks or builds; a wrong or expired id gets the same 409 update_not_cancellable,
word for word, as when no update runs, so the answer tells nothing of another's install.
The lead's last round, in dbd6472 (a server's remote bundle can update apart from its supervisor, so "never shipped" is not relied on):
The supervisor IPC message is now update-cancel-v2. A supervisor that cancelled without an id knew update-cancel; it ignores the new name, and the old name is never read as a cancel. Test: update-ipc.test.ts reads update-cancel-v2 with an id as a cancel, and update-cancel as nothing. It fails if the old name is accepted.
A wrong or expired install_id is refused exactly as when no update runs.POST /api/updates/cancel passes on only the install_id this server was last asked for, and only while that install checks or builds. Any other id, an expired one included, gets the same 409 update_not_cancellable with the same words as when nothing runs, so the answer tells nothing of another's install. The supervisor checks the id too. Test: update-api.test.ts "refuses a wrong or expired id exactly as it refuses one when no update runs". It compares the whole responses and fails without the check. shared/protocol.ts says so.
Validation: bun run check fast passed (unit 13431 pass / 0 fail). Update API, IPC and contract tests: 28/28.
The relay PC's install path is unchanged and still installs: the PC is asked for the release
shown, now with the install_id its 202 gives (the cancel contract of this PR). The contract test
pinned the request without that id; it now expects it.
The HOLD on server/relay-pc.contract.test.ts, "shows a relay PC's own update on its card and installs it from here…", is fixed in ea3b62d.
Reproduced alone on this branch. The relay PC's install path still works: the PC is asked to install the release shown, and its steps follow to the new release. The test pinned the install request's old shape. That request now also carries the install_id its 202 gives, which is this PR's cancel contract, so the test failed on the extra field, not on any behaviour.
Fix, in the test, as the contract requires: it expects { command: "install", expected_revision, install_id }, with the id in its UUID shape (INSTALL_ID). No other test pins that request without the id. The two remaining update-ipc.test.ts cases are an older bridge's and a reader's inputs, which carry none.
Every test file that touches the update routes or IPC (11 files): 400 pass. Its 4 failures are the conversation-API tests that time out at 10 s under this host's load, on main as well, and touch no update code.
scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts (run by relay-e2e-regression.ts) pinned the install request
the PC's update service received without the install_id this PR's cancel contract adds. It now
checks one install of the release on offer, by name, with an id in INSTALL_ID's shape. No other
script or test pins that request or the install's 202 body; the clients' POST bodies are
unchanged ({ expected_revision }).
The second HOLD (scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts:1143, run by relay-e2e-regression.ts) is fixed in 51a26ec.
The fix: the QA script pinned the install request that the PC's update service received without the install_id this PR's cancel contract adds. It now checks for one install of the release on offer, named by it, with an id in INSTALL_ID's shape.
The search for other pins: I grepped all of scripts/, server/, src/ and shared/ for the install request, its 202 body and the cancel IPC message. No other script or test pins them:
the clients' POST bodies are unchanged ({ expected_revision }), and that is what the installs arrays in the own-update tests check;
the update-ipc.test.ts cases without an id are an older bridge's and a reader's inputs;
the one other { accepted: true } pin is the runtime-switch route.

relay-e2e in the CI runner image (herdr-ci-runner:local): from a git archive of this head, with its own bun install, Chromium, build and build:shell, bun scripts/relay-e2e-regression.ts passed: "PASS relay media browser QA", "PASS relay end to end".
bun run check fast passed (unit 13431 pass / 0 fail).
Fixes SSH install follow-ups: restore the old Ovis after a failed replacement, cancel the follow-up update, async ssh -G #3367 items 2-5: cancel stops a PC's follow-up update; the follow-up update installs only the release shown; one job per PC on the ssh -G address (asynchronous ssh -G). New HTTP contract: POST /api/updates/install returns an install_id; POST /api/updates/cancel (owner guard or bridge token, as main's other update routes) requires it and stops only that install; a wrong, expired or absent id gets the same 409 as no update running. The supervisor message is update-cancel-v2, which older supervisors ignore (remote bundles can update the server apart from its supervisor).
The merge pass's strict Codex reviews (route: axwith) are the real review for the contract change. Reproduced and fixed: a cancel without an update identity stopping another device's update; a mixed-version supervisor acting on an id-less cancel; wrong ids revealing update state; an installer follow-up cancel not reaching the remote; a same-version different build installed; real ssh -G in tests. omo review at this head: BLOCK with no HIGH; its MEDIUM (the follow-up revision comes from OVIS_REVISION, unset in the desktop app) and LOWs are filed as PC install follow-up update: bind to this build without OVIS_REVISION (desktop app) #3400.
server/relay-pc.contract.test.ts and scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts pinned the old install request without install_id; both now expect it. I checked the relay path carries it end to end (the relay PC's route issues it, both callers keep it from the 202, a cancel sends it). relay-pc.contract passed alone twice on old-desktop on main + this PR; GitHub's browser jobs (incl. relay-e2e) green on this head.
Merged with --admin --match-head-commit: Fast checks failed only scripts/plugin.test.ts (server.log rotation, outside this PR), which passed alone on old-desktop on main + this head; Integration tests, both browser jobs and Native Windows install green.

What
The rest of #3367 (items 2 to 5), after #3378 fixed item 1.
POST /api/updates/cancel, under the same rule as install (this PC's owner, or the connection server's bridge token).install_cancellable.errorwitherror_code: "update_cancelled". Nothing is installed, its offer is kept, and it is not counted as a failed release.followOwnUpdateandrunOwnUpdate), that PC is asked to stop it. A cancelled setup asks over its own connection before that closes.update_cancelled, within a bounded wait; a 202 alone is not proof. Otherwise, as for an older Ovis that cannot or one already restarting, the words say it may still finish there. Those words stay on the PC (update_error) and on the job, never silence.ssh -Gaddress, but whenssh -Gfailed it fell back to the address as written, so an alias could start a second job. An address that does not resolve now counts as possibly the same PC for the busy checks. "Already added here" still compares as written, so nothing is refused only becausessh -Gfailed.ssh -Gno longer holds the server up (item 5). It never runs on the request path. It resolves only in the background (Bun.spawn, killed outright withSIGKILLat 3 s, one run per address at a time), and a check finds the address kept or counts it unknown at once, so busy. Saved PCs are warmed once they are loaded, and an unresolved address is not cached, so it is asked again.Tests
Each failed before its change:
updater.test.ts"cancels an install while it builds": a real release whose build never ends.pc-update-cancel.test.ts: a stand-in PC over HTTP. One that can cancel is asked to, confirmsupdate_cancelled, and the words say it stopped. One that cannot is not asked, and the words say it may still finish there.pc-update-all.test.ts: a cancelled own update of a PC that cannot stop it now tells "may still finish it there" (it used to end in silence).pc-install-routes.test.ts: "updates an older Ovis a fresh install finds already installed there, only to the release checked here" now refuses another release than this app's, and "counts a PC that ssh cannot resolve as possibly busy".Review
