Summary

  • WEBHOOK_URL now comes from the required N8N_WEBHOOK_URL. Without it, n8n builds webhook URLs with :5678.
  • NODES_EXCLUDE now comes from N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE. It defaults to n8n's own defaults, with Execute Command and Local File Trigger disabled. An internal instance that runs git for the GitHub backups sets N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE=["n8n-nodes-base.localFileTrigger"] to keep Execute Command enabled.
  • README and .env.example document both modes, plus how to move an existing instance in (its encryptionKey and .n8n folder).

The same compose can then run an internal n8n and a separate public instance that only serves webhooks. The public one cannot execute commands.

Deployment notes

  • Set N8N_WEBHOOK_URL, and N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE where Execute Command is needed, in every deployment before merging, otherwise the deploy fails on the required variable.
  • docker compose config was checked with both settings and without N8N_WEBHOOK_URL, where it fails with a clear message.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

- WEBHOOK_URL comes from the required N8N_WEBHOOK_URL (without it n8n
  builds webhook URLs with :5678).
- NODES_EXCLUDE comes from N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE and defaults to n8n's own
defaults (Execute Command and Local File Trigger disabled). The
internal instance that runs git for the GitHub backups sets it to
  keep Execute Command enabled.
- README: document both modes and how to move an existing instance in
  (encryption key and .n8n folder).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configure a public webhook URL for an n8n instance.
    • Choose which node types are excluded. By default, Execute Command and Local File Trigger are disabled; the exclusion list can be customized.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on safely configuring node access, using multiple instances, and moving an existing instance into the Compose setup.

The n8n Compose service now requires a public webhook URL and supports configurable node exclusions. The example environment file and README describe the settings, their defaults, and instance setup and migration requirements.

Changes: n8n Configuration and Deployment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Webhook and node settings
n8n/.env.example, n8n/docker-compose.yml, n8n/README.md
Compose requires N8N_WEBHOOK_URL and uses it for WEBHOOK_URL. N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE can override the default exclusions for Execute Command and Local File Trigger. The example environment file and README document these settings and the effects of enabling Execute Command.
Instance setup and migration
n8n/README.md
The README describes using one Compose configuration for multiple environments. It also documents the encryption key and .n8n folder steps for moving an existing instance.

A rabbit checks the webhook URL,
Then reads the node list, clear and true.
Two nodes stay tucked away by default,
Unless the settings say to bring them through.
A copied folder finds its home,
And a rabbit hops through setup too.

Consider inheriting n8n’s exclusion defaults.

If a future image changes its defaults, the fixed list will not follow them. Consider letting n8n apply its defaults when N8N_NODES_EXCLUDE is unset, while preserving explicit overrides.

Document secure owner setup before public exposure.

If a fresh instance is exposed before owner setup, an external user can complete signup first and become the owner. Instruct operators to initialize the owner over a private connection before public exposure and restrict access to the editor and setup routes, including through the published port.

Document how to isolate each instance.

When operators run Compose twice from the same directory with different environment files, the second run can replace the internal service while retaining its workflows and credentials. Document distinct project names and host ports. Also require distinct container names; the Compose file fixes both instances to n8n.

If the copied .n8n directory or database is root-owned and inaccessible to UID 1000, n8n cannot read or update the migrated data. Tell operators to verify ownership and read/write permissions on the copied directory and its contents.

If the public URL changes and the old address stops routing to n8n, manually configured senders continue sending events to the old address. Document how to preserve the existing URL and routing, or update sender URLs and verify delivery after migration.

Stop the source instance before copying its data.

Document migration from PostgreSQL.

If the existing instance uses PostgreSQL, copying .n8n and the key does not transfer its workflows or credentials. The new instance can start with an empty SQLite database. Document the database migration step and link to n8n’s entity export and import instructions.
