CI/Volta's Node pin and Vercel's 24.x setting do not establish the patch executing application code. Add temporary server startup evidence: runtime.node_version with only service and the running nodeVersion.

Next.js registers the diagnostic through a Node-only dynamic import, covering its pages/actions, billing, cron and queue functions. Eve logs independently when its startup hook modules load, covering the separate service behind the same-origin Eve routes without enabling authored telemetry or subscribing to request/turn events. Process-wide guards suppress repeat module loads; logging and diagnostic-module import failures cannot prevent startup.

The runbook explains deployment-specific runtime-log evidence, cold-start limits, and removal. The existing server error reporter is preserved.

Validation on local Node 24.22.1:

  • 13 focused tests pass; all three runtime files have 100% line/branch coverage.
  • Typecheck, lint, web + marketing production builds, 52 browser-contract tests, and 2,919 web tests under coverage pass.
  • Scoped Fallow audit passes using focused coverage.
  • Local startup emits v24.22.1 once each for web and Eve across repeated requests. Next.js reports no compilation issues; cron and Stripe webhook routes compile cleanly.
  • Full pnpm verify / coverage:ci stop on three existing cost-replay tests that require Linux /proc on this Mac (initially also missing flock). No unrelated test fixes were made.
  • The Instant matrix build passes; fixture setup is blocked by unavailable local Docker/Postgres (ECONNREFUSED on dedicated loopback test port).

Production's actual patch still requires runtime evidence from a separately approved release. Leave this PR unmerged; no manual deployment, production configuration, or credential changes are part of this change.

Walkthrough

The web and Eve services now log the Node.js version from their running processes. The change adds runtime guards, once-per-process logging, tests, and operational guidance for collecting and removing the temporary diagnostics.

Changes

Runtime version diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Eve runtime version hook
apps/agent/agent/hooks/node-runtime-version.ts, apps/agent/tests/node-runtime-version.test.ts
The Eve hook logs the running Node.js version at most once per runtime and catches logging errors. Tests cover the logged service and version, repeated imports, and logging failures.
Web runtime version registration
apps/web/src/instrumentation.ts, apps/web/src/lib/diagnostics/node-runtime-version.ts, apps/web/src/instrumentation.test.ts
The registration function imports and calls the diagnostic only for the Node.js runtime. The diagnostic logs the running version at most once per process and catches logging errors. Tests cover runtime guards and the existing error reporter guard.
Operational evidence guidance
docs/operations/README.md, docs/operations/node-runtime-evidence.md
The operations documentation describes how to find and assess version records for each service, what evidence to retain, and how to remove the temporary diagnostics.

If the temporary diagnostic fails to load, affected web instances may not become ready to serve requests. Contain that failure before merging.

Explanation

The description clearly states what, why, and how the change works. It includes operational impact, privacy-related boundaries, testing performed, known environment limitations, and deployment constraints. It does not use the template headings or checkboxes, and it does not explicitly identify a related issue or state the type of change, but the required information is mostly present.

A rabbit checks the logs at dawn,
Two services leave their versions on.
The Node patch hops into view,
With careful notes for operators, too.
Then off go clues when their work is through.

[Medium impact] No code issue blocks merging, but nick-neely explicitly requests separate approval before merging or deploying.

Summary

Adds temporary startup logs showing the Node version running the web and Eve services.

  • The web service logs its running Node version at startup.
  • Eve logs its running Node version when its hooks load.
  • The operations runbook shows how to check and record each service's runtime version.

No new actionable issues were found. Per nick-neely's PR description, leave this PR unmerged until separately approved.
