When a custom collection loader requests many icons at once (e.g. an icon picker with ~1500 names), customIconLoader built a single GET with icons=a,b,c,…. That exceeds common reverse-proxy / server URI and header limits and surfaces as 431 / 414.
This change splits the name list by a query-value byte budget (~3k characters for the joined icons= value), fetches chunks in parallel, and merges icons and aliases (prefix from the first response). Any chunk failure still returns null, matching the previous catch behavior.
Follow-up (out of scope)
src/runtime/server/api.ts still builds a single icons.join(',') when falling back to the Iconify API. That path can hit the same limit server-side; it can be chunked in a separate PR if needed.

Walkthrough
The custom icon loader now splits icon names into chunks based on a 3072-character query budget, fetches the chunks concurrently, validates each response, and merges icon and alias maps. The runtime plugin uses this loader for custom icon requests. Tests cover chunking, merging, and rejection of a response with a mismatched prefix.
Large icon requests may still exceed a deployed URI limit and fail with 414 or 431 responses.

Explanation
Issue #539 requires the custom collection loader to avoid one oversized request for a large icon list. src/runtime/plugin.ts measures encoded icon names, splits the list at a 2,000-character budget, sends chunks in parallel, validates each response, and merges icons and aliases. It returns null when no chunk succeeds. The implementation also rejects responses with a different prefix, which addresses the issue's merge concern. Issue #539 does not define a separate automated-test acceptance criterion.

Explanation
The available change summary identifies changes only in src/runtime/plugin.ts. The separate Iconify API fallback in src/runtime/server/api.ts remains unchanged and is explicitly out of scope. No unrelated change is evidenced.

Inline the chunking in customIconLoader and drop the helper module.
Merge responses with their collection-level properties (width, height,
...) so icons keep their viewBox, and ignore failed chunks instead of
failing the whole batch.

Thanks @thrashxr for tackling this! I pushed two commits to simplify the approach and fix two issues I found while testing:
1. Collection-level width / height were dropped. The server returns the collection defaults (width, height, left, top, …) next to icons, but the merge only kept prefix, icons and aliases. Every request goes through the merge, so icons without their own dimensions fell back to a 16×16 viewBox even when only one request was sent. This affects icon sets like FontAwesome, which set height on the collection. The merge now spreads each response, so those properties are kept.
2. One empty chunk failed the whole batch. When none of a chunk's names exist, the local endpoint returns null, which made Promise.all reject and every icon in the batch come back missing. Iconify sorts names before calling the loader, so missing names tend to end up in the same chunk. Each chunk is now validated on its own, and the loader returns null only when every chunk fails.
3. Simpler code. The chunking now lives inside customIconLoader in plugin.ts, using about 25 lines instead of a separate module with three exported helpers. Chunks are capped at about 2,000 characters of URL-encoded names (encodeURIComponent, following CodeRabbit's comment), which keeps request URLs around 2 KB, well below nginx's 8 KB and Node's 16 KB defaults. The unit tests were removed with the helpers they covered.
Tested in a built app (provider: 'server', inline custom collection of 1,500 icons at 448×512, rendered in the browser):

main
one 34 KB request → 431, no icons

400 missing names + 1,500 valid, original merge with dimensions fixed
