TML-3537: Migration statements rename, remove and fill value object fields, and convert and delete variants, on Postgres and SQLite - #30929
Without a statement, both commands refuse and print the statements that answer the question, as they do for models and fields. db update takes the same statements and applies the same operations.
What each statement does
A field of a value object is named through its own value object (GeoPoint.lat), never through a path from a model. Each statement acts on every column of a managed table that holds the value object, in the column, in a list, or nested in another value object. A path is an RFC 9535 JSONPath limited to member names and the wildcard ([*] or .*), which, as RFC 9535 defines it, selects the elements of a list and the member values of an object. The planner writes [*] for a list.
Statement
Postgres
SQLite
--rename GeoPoint.lat:GeoPoint.latitude
renameStoredKey per column and path, with jsonb_set, between the old and the new shape check; a json column is read as jsonb and written back as json, so each row it rewrites is stored in jsonb form (key order and spacing change, duplicate keys collapse to the last one) and the other rows keep their text
renameStoredKey with json_set and json_remove, after the table rebuilds
--delete GeoPoint.lng
removeStoredKey per column and path; asked once as the value object field
The same, with json_remove
--rename Status.ARCHIVED:Status.RETIRED, --delete Status.DRAFT, on an enum a value object member holds
replaceStoredValue and removeStoredValue with path, at every path; a deleted value becomes JSON null in an optional member, leaves a list, and fails at apply on a required member while rows hold it
The same
--backfill GeoPoint.country, for a field that becomes required
fillStoredKey per column and path, with value: placeholder('GeoPoint.country:value') and field: 'GeoPoint.country', listed in the plan's output; running migration.ts refuses, with CONTRACT.ARGUMENT_INVALID and before ops.json is written, a value the field does not take: a scalar its data type refuses, an enum value outside its enum, a list element of another type, a value object without a required field or with an unknown key, as value 12 for field "GeoPoint.country" is not a String; db migrate refuses the migration while its migration.ts still has placeholder(...) calls
The same
No statement, for a field that becomes required
migration plan refuses, naming --backfill and every column and path; db update fills a temporary value ("", 0, false, and [] for any list) when the field's data type takes it, reported once per field, and otherwise refuses, saying which reason applies. When the value object also lost a field, migration plan refuses at once, offering --rename GeoPoint.lat:GeoPoint.latitude first, then --backfill, and says that --delete GeoPoint.lat still needs --backfill. db update asks about the lost field, offering --rename or --delete, and after --delete fills a temporary value
The same
--convert Bug, for a variant whose discriminator value changed
replaceStoredValue on the base table's discriminator column, between the old and the new discriminator check; db update runs it too
The same, after the table rebuilds
--rename Bug:Defect, for a variant whose value also changed
The same rewrite, plus the model rename's own operations
The same
--delete Bug, for a variant whose value changed or that was removed
deleteRows of the old value; a removed variant's own table, or the columns only it used, are dropped, in one question about the model; a variant table's cascading foreign key deletes its rows
The same; since the runner turns foreign keys off, deleteRows names a kept variant table in cascade and deletes its rows first, as the cascade would, and its label says so; the question warns about foreign keys only when a table references the rows, naming it, and a deleted row another table references fails at PRAGMA foreign_key_check, naming the referencing tables
A question about several operations lists them one per line. A removed variant whose base gained one variant is offered the rename to it, as --rename Bug:Issue. A key operation names its path as written, so $.*.lat reads at path "$.*". When rows still hold an enum value a migration removes from a required member, the failure names every column and path, and the advice by hand quotes each call as the written migration.ts holds it. When db migrate runs fewer operations than its migrations hold, its summary says the others had nothing to do.
renameStoredKey, fillStoredKey and replaceStoredValue are widening; removeStoredKey, removeStoredValue and deleteRows are destructive, each the operation of a data-loss question. Every operation is a method a user can call in a hand-written migration.ts, and re-running a written migration.ts reproduces its ops.json. MongoDB refuses value object field statements, enum value statements, variant converts and value object field backfills in this release.
Changes in packages/1-framework
framework-components: the value object field coordinate, subject and statements
ValueObjectFieldCoordinate, the valueObjectField subject of MigrationSubject, the resolved value object field rename and backfill statements, the variant convert statement (a variant is a model, so its entity is model; describeMigrationStatement prints it as convert variant "Bug", as the CLI messages say), their JSON forms, migrationSubjectKey, migrationStatementJson, describeMigrationStatement and valueObjectFieldStatementText. This names things the framework contract types already define (a value object's field, a model) in the statement vocabulary the framework already has; it adds no new concept and no family or target vocabulary. describeDataStatement checks a variant convert by its kind, so a new data statement on a model fails to type-check there instead of printing variant.
framework-components: rowsHoldingValue becomes a list
MigrationRunnerFailureMeta.rowsHoldingValue (packages/1-framework/1-core/framework-components/src/control/control-migration-types.ts) changes from one RowsHoldingValue to a list: every removal of the migration whose check fails while rows hold its value, the failed one first. It does not change the framework domain: the entry type and its meaning are the same, it names no new concept and no family or target word, and the list only lets one failure report each removal instead of the first.
CLI: statement parsing, resolution and questions
parse-field-statement.ts, resolve-statements.ts, variants.ts, plan-questions.ts and statement-text.ts read ValueObject.field, resolve value object field renames and backfills and one-name variant converts against the two contracts, and ask one question per removed value object field and one per changed or removed variant, with --convert offered first. This is CLI code that reads the framework's existing contract types; it adds no domain type.
CLI: db update runs a variant convert
orm/db/update.ts, db-run.ts, db-update.ts and run-migration.ts let --convert <Variant> through to the planner, and still refuse --convert Model.field and --backfill with MIGRATION.STATEMENT_NEEDS_MIGRATION_FILE. Command behaviour only.
CLI: advice and temporary values
runner-failure-advice.ts, calls-as-written.ts and cli-errors.ts word the advice for every listed removal of rowsHoldingValue, quoting each call as migration.ts holds it, and temporary-values.ts prints the temporary value of a value object field once, with the --backfill statement that chooses it. The renameStoredKey precheck's own description says to remove one of the two keys, so failed-precheck-advice.ts keeps its drift advice for every precheck. migration-cli.ts prints an error whose why repeats its summary once. Output wording only.
CLI: db migrate refuses unfilled placeholders
migrate.ts and unfilled-placeholders.ts refuse, with MIGRATION.UNFILLED_PLACEHOLDER, a migration to apply that has no operations and whose migration.ts still calls placeholder(...), naming its directory and the node command that writes ops.json. The migration package records no other sign of an unfilled placeholder, so the check reads the code of migration.ts: it finds the local name placeholder is imported under from a Prisma migration module (or a namespace import of one), leaves out comments and the text of strings, and looks for a call to that name. A call from a helper file that migration.ts imports is not found. The CLI has TypeScript only as an optional peer dependency, so the check uses a small scanner instead of the TypeScript parser. migration-plan.ts lists the operation each unfilled fill stands for, which the target names in the placeholder's rejection. Command behaviour only.
CLI: migration plan keeps every rejected operation that is not a placeholder
migration plan fills a value object field only when --backfill names it, and the family planner refuses at once otherwise, before any question. migration-plan.ts reads every operation of a plan; an operation that rejects with anything other than an unfilled placeholder fails the command, even when another operation is a placeholder. Command behaviour only.

Documents the new statements on migration plan and db update.
Proof
Journeys, each through migration plan and migrate and through db update, reading the rows back and ending with db verify --schema-only clean and a further plan empty; on Postgres each shows the new shape check or discriminator check was added over the rewritten rows:
value-object-statements.e2e.test.ts and value-object-statements.sqlite.e2e.test.ts: field rename (column, list, nested), field removal, enum values renamed and removed inside value objects.
value-object-backfill.e2e.test.ts and value-object-backfill.sqlite.e2e.test.ts: --backfill with a placeholder, the temporary value, a DateTime field refused under db update, and (B3) a value object that also loses a field: the refusal offering --rename then --backfill, the rename planned, then --delete with --backfill, the filled value, node migration.ts, db migrate and an empty later plan.
variant-statements.e2e.test.ts and variant-statements.sqlite.e2e.test.ts: --convert Bug, --rename Bug:Defect, --delete Bug of a changed value in the shared and in the own-table layout (P7 and V7: the rows of the variant's table go too), and removal of a variant with its own table, with shared columns, and with no columns.
On both targets, json-wildcard.integration.test.ts runs every path operation with [*] and .* over objects of objects and lists, with SQL NULL, JSON null and empty object rows.
Not covered
MongoDB: value object field statements, enum value statements, variant converts and value object field backfills are refused. A later slice adds them.
A value object rename (--rename Address:Location) and a type change of a value object field are not statements.
Value object fields cannot carry defaults, so --backfill has no default to respect.
A column that holds a value object through a union, a dictionary or a value object that contains itself is refused, naming the column; the message says to write the change as a hand-written migration with prisma migration new.
Rewrites run as one UPDATE or DELETE per column and path; nothing batches them on a large table.
The SQL preview of migration plan shows DDL only, for every operation, so it leaves out the data rewrites.
On SQLite, a table other than the variant's own whose foreign key cascades to a deleted row still fails the apply at PRAGMA foreign_key_check; nothing is left changed.
A hand-written migration with only data rewrites and no contract change is refused as a no-op self-edge.
The variant lookup is not shared between SQL and MongoDB: each family reads the domain types itself, since the framework domain does not change.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Migration plans can rename or remove value-object fields, backfill newly required fields, and convert or delete model variants.
Postgres and SQLite migrations support JSON-path updates, including renaming, removing, and filling stored keys, plus deleting rows by value.
db update can handle variant conversions without a migration file; field conversions and backfills still require one.
Bug Fixes
Migration failures report multiple affected data items and provide clearer recovery guidance.
Migrations with unfilled placeholders are identified before execution.
Documentation
Migration guides now explain supported operations, limitations, and data-loss checks.
Adds the value object field coordinate, subject and statements to the framework; the CLI reads ValueObject.field, resolves value object field renames and backfills and variant converts, lets db update run a variant convert, and asks about changed variants with --convert first. MongoDB refuses the new statements and the SQL statement planner plans none of them yet.

…oval check carries the value to count
storedValueSubjects, storedValueOperationIndexes and keepRowsEdit move from the Postgres and SQLite targets into the SQL family, which takes each target's call classes. rowsHoldingValueFailure in the family builds the runner failure for rows that hold a removed value. The removal check's mark now carries its table, its column and the value as the database stores it, so the runners no longer read it from the check's parameters.

…f its migration that holds a removed value
MigrationRunnerFailureMeta.rowsHoldingValue is now a list: the failed removal first, then each other removal of the same migration whose check fails while rows hold its value, as rowsWithoutValue does. The CLI advice renames each enum value once and lists every edit that keeps the data.

…on Postgres and SQLite
A JSON path is an RFC 9535 JSONPath of member names and list wildcards; the SQL family parses it, and each target refuses any other JSONPath feature when the call is built. renameStoredKey writes only the rows whose objects hold the key, refuses in its precheck to overwrite an object that already has the new key, and its postcheck lets a re-run skip finished work. On Postgres it is classified alter, between the old shape check drop and the new one.

… a column that lacks it, on Postgres and SQLite

deleteRows takes its value as replaceStoredValue takes from, with an optional codecRef, is destructive and names its table as the data it loses. Its postcheck states that no row holds the value, so a re-run skips finished work.

…ct on a value inside the JSON of a column
With path, the value at the path is compared as a JSON value, so the call takes neither many nor codecRef. removeStoredValue takes the value out of a list when the path ends at [*], and sets a member to JSON null otherwise; without nullable its precheck fails while a row holds the value, and the rows-holding-value mark carries the path, so the runner counts the rows at the path and the failure names it.

…d value object fields
planValueObjectFieldRewrites compares each value object of the origin with the destination one, field by field, and finds every path from a managed column of the working schema to the objects of the value object, through nested value objects and lists. A rename statement renames the key at each path, and a field the destination lacks is removed. Paths use destination names and the rewrites are ordered by path depth, so an outer rename runs first. A path through a value object that contains itself, and a column holding a union or a dictionary of value objects, are refused. reachesAny is exported from the SQL contract package for the cycle check.

…value object fields, on Postgres and SQLite
Both planners write renameStoredKey and removeStoredKey for the key rewrites the family plans, beside the diff: on Postgres in the alter bucket, after the old shape check is dropped and before the new one is added; on SQLite after every diff call. A value object field rename statement takes the positions of its operations. Each removeStoredKey call is about its value object field, so the plan asks one question per field.

…vals to rows on PGlite and SQLite
Each plan renames or removes a key in a single object, in every element of a list and in a nested value object, and the JSON is read back after the apply. On Postgres the rewrites run between the old and new shape checks, and the new checks accept every row.

…criminator value changes or that are removed
planVariantRowRewrites compares each variant of the origin with the destination. A --convert or a rename statement rewrites a changed discriminator value in the base table's column; a changed value with no statement, and a removed variant, delete the rows that hold the old value. Deletions come first, and a rewrite to a value another variant moves from is refused. A row deletion is asked about as its variant, and so are the dropped columns of a variant the destination no longer has. A model rename also takes the positions of the rewrite the target places for it.

…nts whose discriminator value changes or that are removed
--convert Bug and a rename whose value changed write replaceStoredValue on the base table's discriminator column; a changed value with no statement and a removed variant write deleteRows. They go in the alter bucket, after the old discriminator check is dropped and before the new one is added. A row deletion, and the dropped columns or table of a removed variant, are asked about as the variant. A field rename of a variant with its own table renames the column of that table.

…s whose discriminator value changes or that are removed
The planner appends replaceStoredValue and deleteRows calls for variants after every diff call. A row deletion and a removed variant's dropped columns or table are asked about as the variant. The question for a SQLite row deletion says that migrations run with foreign keys off, so rows of other tables that reference the deleted rows make the apply fail at PRAGMA foreign_key_check.

…on PGlite and SQLite
Each plan converts, renames, or deletes the rows of a variant whose discriminator value changed, or drops a removed variant's table and deletes its base rows, and the rows are read back. On Postgres the new discriminator check accepts every row, and the cascade of a variant table's foreign key deletes its rows. On SQLite a deleted row that another table references fails the apply at PRAGMA foreign_key_check; the failure's why now names deleteRows as well as recreate-table, and the error reference says so.

…value, and --delete Bug answers a removed variant
A SQLite journey changes the discriminator value of a variant under db update, which is refused offering --convert Bug before --delete Bug until --convert Bug rewrites the rows; plans the same change with migration plan --convert Bug, whose migration.ts writes replaceStoredValue and reproduces itself; and removes the variant, asked once about the model Bug and answered by --delete Bug, which deletes its rows and drops its column. CLI tests ask one question about a removed variant, repeat the target's advice about referenced rows, and take --delete Bug as its answer.

…ariant converts and row deletions
The statements section says how the SQL planners compare variants by discriminator value, what --convert Bug, a rename with a new value, a changed value with no statement and a removed variant plan, where the row changes run on each target, and that on SQLite a deleted row another table references fails the apply at PRAGMA foreign_key_check. The rename limits and db update notes say a variant convert runs under db update. The error reference lists the refusal of two variants that move values onto each other.

… an unfilled value its migration.ts writes as a placeholder
A member that becomes required needs a value in objects that lack it and in objects where it is JSON null, so fillStoredKey now fills both on Postgres and SQLite. A planner-written fill whose value the user chooses takes an UnfilledValue: its migration.ts writes placeholder(slot), and its operation rejects with MIGRATION.UNFILLED_PLACEHOLDER until the user fills it.

…become required
planValueObjectMemberFills finds each field a value object of both contracts makes required, new or once optional, and fills its key at every path from a column to the value object. A backfill statement fills it with a placeholder value the user writes. Without one, the plan either refuses and names --backfill, or fills a scalar field with the empty value of its JSON type and a list with an empty list, refusing a field that holds a value object or an enum value.

Migration statements and resolution now include value-object field renames and backfills, plus variant conversions. Shared SQL planning discovers stored value-object paths, plans JSON rewrites and required-field fills, and maps statements to operations.
PostgreSQL and SQLite operations packages/3-targets/postgres/1-target/src/core/migrations/*, packages/3-targets/sqlite/1-target/src/core/migrations/*
Both targets add JSON-path value rewrites, stored-key rename/removal/fill, and row deletion. Their planners also create variant discriminator rewrites or row deletions. SQLite row deletion can include cascading foreign-key operations.

The new value-object and variant migration statements look sound on Postgres and SQLite. Before merging, fix the misleading recovery error for field converts under db update when there is no snapshot, and correct the SQLite blob JSON type. The PR also needs the operator's sign-off for its framework-package changes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 56.79% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 81 functions across 50 files. (125 skipped: 5 unsupported, 120 over the file limit.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Make B3 check what the file header says it checks.
Line 11 says that each journey checks the shape checks over the filled rows and ends with db verify --schema-only clean. B1 and B2 do this. B3 reads the rows back and checks for an empty plan. B3 does not call expectNewShapeChecks or runDbVerify. As a result, the --delete Address.zip --backfill Address.country path never shows that the shape checks were added after the rewrite and fill. If a regression put the new check before the fill, B3 would still pass.
The SQLite twin (value-object-backfill.sqlite.e2e.test.ts, lines 367-380) has the same gap for db verify --schema-only.

Check field converts before resolving the origin.
When the origin snapshot is missing, resolveStatements returns MIGRATION.STATEMENT_ORIGIN_UNKNOWN before statementsNeedingMigrationFile runs. This includes a valid two-name field convert such as --convert User.age. After the snapshot is stored, the same statement resolves as a field convert and returns MIGRATION.STATEMENT_NEEDS_MIGRATION_FILE, so the recovery steps do not make db update succeed.
The CLI handler does not catch this case because it rejects only backfills and three-name statements. Classify valid two-name converts against the destination before origin resolution. Send field converts to errorStatementNeedsMigrationFile, but keep destination variants and ambiguous or invalid statements on the resolver path. A variant convert must still require origin resolution because its discriminator change is checked against both contracts.

hexJsonProjection emits a one-element JSON array for BLOB values. SqliteBlobDescriptor declares that value as an object, so value-object checks can require the wrong JSON type. Change the declaration to 'array'.
SqliteBigintDescriptor.jsonType = 'number' matches its decimal JSON projection.

packages/1-frameworkframework-components: the value object field coordinate, subject and statementsValueObjectFieldCoordinate, thevalueObjectFieldsubject ofMigrationSubject, the resolved value object field rename and backfill statements, the variant convert statement (a variant is a model, so itsentityismodel;describeMigrationStatementprints it asconvert variant "Bug", as the CLI messages say), their JSON forms, migrationSubjectKey,migrationStatementJson, describeMigrationStatementandvalueObjectFieldStatementText. This names things the framework contract types already define (a value object's field, a model) in the statement vocabulary the framework already has; it adds no new concept and no family or target vocabulary.describeDataStatementchecks a variant convert by its kind, so a new data statement on a model fails to type-check there instead of printingvariant.framework-components:rowsHoldingValuebecomes a listMigrationRunnerFailureMeta.rowsHoldingValue(packages/1-framework/1-core/framework-components/src/control/control-migration-types.ts) changes from oneRowsHoldingValueto a list: every removal of the migration whose check fails while rows hold its value, the failed one first. It does not change the framework domain: the entry type and its meaning are the same, it names no new concept and no family or target word, and the list only lets one failure report each removal instead of the first.CLI: statement parsing, resolution and questions
