HP 240 G8 OpenCore

Private workspace for an HP 240 G8 running macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 with an experimental Tiger Lake graphics stack.

Status: blocked upstream on internal display support

The EFI is correct and the whole stack loads, but the machine cannot show a picture once the graphics driver takes over.

WhateverXe 0.3.0 lists Internal displays under Roadmap -> Planned, and the official binary contains no tgl-internal-panel support at all (zero occurrences; the tsuchinaka fork carried it). On this laptop the internal eDP panel is the only usable output, so the stack has nowhere to draw.

Verified before calling it blocked:

Check Result
WEX 0.3.0 RELEASE official SHA-256 48C7CB80...606442, matches SHA256SUMS
OpenCore injection every kext Success, ends at Prelinked status - Success
SIP csr-active-config=03080000 (0x803)
AMFIPass 1.4.1 Mod SHA-256 matches extras/AMFIPass-v1.4.1-Mod-RELEASE.zip
WhateverGreen absent
Boot args -allow3d -disablegfxfirmware present
Vault 98 files, 0 problems

Tried and ruled out: -wex-nopanel (panel goes dark, no HDMI), -wex-noaccel (no output either), HDMI attached before boot.

Graphics firmware disabled via NVRAM in the kernel log is expected: it is what -disablegfxfirmware prints. It is not an error.

Hardware

  • HP 240 G8, i3-1115G4, Tiger Lake iGPU 8086:9A78
  • Realtek RTL8111/8168 Ethernet 10EC:8168 rev 15
  • Realtek ALC236 10EC:0236 behind Intel Smart Sound, layout 55 is the HP-240G8-specific AppleALC layout
  • Internal eDP 1366x768, HDMI 1.4b

Software

  • OpenCore 1.0.8
  • WhateverXe 0.3.0 RELEASE (official)
  • Lilu 1.7.2
  • AMFIPass 1.4.1 Mod
  • AppleALC 1.9.8, SimpleHDA 1.0.0, alcid=55
  • SMBIOS MacBookPro16,2 / board Mac-5F9802EFE386AA28

The SMBIOS matters for installation, not for WEX. MacBookPro15,2 stops at Sonoma, so Apple's catalogue had no Tahoe payload and the installer failed with error 303. MacBookPro16,2 is the Tahoe-capable equivalent of this laptop.

Vault

EFI/OC/vault.plist is enforced whenever it exists, whatever Misc > Security > Vault says. After any change under EFI/OC, rebuild it or the next boot aborts with OC: failed to load configuration:

python3 tools/vault/make_vault.py EFI/OC # macOS / Linux
powershell -File tools/vault/make_vault.ps1 EFI\OC # Windows

Do not reboot unless the check prints 0 problem(s).

Layout

  • EFI/ - the tree copied to the ESP. Not the USB itself.
  • notes/HANDOFF.md - original Big Sur entry point.
  • notes/efi-notes.md - config decisions and vault background.
  • notes/HANDOFF-ventura-next.md - Ventura-era handoff.
  • hardware/root-capture/ - ACPI, PCI and VBT captures from the real machine.
  • tools/vault/ - vault generators and the Mac-side sync script.

Next step when upstream moves

Rebuild the USB from EFI/, install Tahoe, boot it once with WEX 0.3.0+ and then install the WhateverXe Graphics pkg matching that release. The pkg picks its payload from the running macOS, so it has to run inside Tahoe.
