Resolves #19.

Lets embedders like nypm call runMain directly instead of spawning bin/jup.mjs.

const { code, stdout, stderr } = await runMain(["pnpm", "install"], {
  cwd: "./packages/app",
  env: { ...process.env, CI: "1" },
  stdio: ["ignore", "pipe", "pipe"],
});

What it does

  • cwd: project discovery (package.json, jup.lock, .jup.env, .npmrc), the paths use/up write, and the tool's working directory all start from it. A relative path is resolved against process.cwd(). process.chdir() is never called.
  • env: jup copies it and works on the copy. Settings are read from the copy, and .jup.env values, COREPACK_ROOT and COREPACK_MIGRATE_FROM are added to it. Neither the caller's object nor process.env changes.
  • stdio: "inherit" | "pipe" | "ignore", or an array of three, as in spawn. It covers jup's own output (advisories, download notices, usage errors) as well as the tool's, in order. Piped streams are returned as RunResult.stdout / stderr, without colour codes. A piped stdin is closed straight away.
  • handover: true combined with any of the three rejects with a TypeError.

How

Each run without handover gets its own context in an AsyncLocalStorage scope (src/utils/context.ts). Code that read process.env, process.cwd() or the output streams now goes through that context, so concurrent runs stay isolated. Under handover (the jup command and its shims) there is no context and behaviour is unchanged. Reading the options and setting up the context lives in a separate file, src/run/scoped.ts, that the shims never load.

Answers to the issue's open questions

  1. .jup.env leak: fixed for every run without handover, even when env isn't passed. This changes what docs/11.api.md described before, and that section is rewritten. The env-restore code in jup use is no longer needed and is removed.
  2. stdio or silent: kept stdio. silent is just ["ignore", "pipe", "pipe"].
  3. stdin: only the three modes. Passing your own stream or string is not supported.

Notes

  • The warm-path size ceiling goes from 306,000 to 309,000 (+3,760 source bytes), with a note in test/unit/main.test.ts. The built dist/index.mjs grows by 1,713 bytes (+0.81%).
  • Still shared across runs in one process: the CA bundle installed for JUP_CAFILE, and warnings that print once per process. Both are noted in the new §8.3.4.
  • If cwd doesn't exist, the spawn fails with the generic "cannot execute" message, not one that names the directory.

Tests and docs

  • New tests in test/unit/main.test.ts: two concurrent runs in different projects with their own env and captured output, "ignore", jup's own errors collected with the tool's output, and the TypeError cases.
  • An existing test/unit/cli.test.ts test now goes through runMain, because only a runMain call gets its own environment copy.
  • Docs: new §8.3.4 in .agents/08-execution.md, a note in §3.2, a new section in docs/11.api.md, and doc comments on RunOptions / RunResult.

Lint, typecheck, the full suite (2339 passed, 10 skipped) and the corepack compatibility suite pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • runMain now supports per-run working directories, environment variables, and standard I/O modes.
    • Piped output can be captured as stdout and stderr; output may also be inherited or ignored.
    • Concurrent runs use isolated settings without modifying the caller’s process state.
    • Environment files are merged into the current run while existing environment values retain priority.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of relative paths, environment lookups, and piped process output.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance and examples for run options, output capture, concurrency, and handover restrictions.

A run without handover now works on its own copy of the cwd, environment
and streams, held in an `AsyncLocalStorage` scope, so concurrent runs stay
isolated and `.jup.env` values no longer leak into `process.env`. Piped
streams collect jup's own output with the tool's and return it in
`RunResult.stdout` / `stderr`. Combining the options with `handover`
rejects with a `TypeError`.

📝 Walkthrough

runMain now supports per-run cwd, env, and stdio options when handover is disabled. Runs use isolated context for paths and environment values. Piped output is collected and returned with the exit code. Handover rejects these options.

Changes: Embedded run context

Layer / File(s) Summary
Run options and context setup
src/types.ts, src/utils/context.ts, src/run/scoped.ts, build.config.ts
RunOptions supports cwd, copied env, and configurable stdio. RunResult can include captured output. Context helpers and runScoped establish per-run state.
runMain dispatch and stream handling
src/main.ts, src/run/native.ts, src/utils/log.ts, test/unit/main.test.ts, docs/11.api.md, .agents/08-execution.md
runMain scopes non-handover execution and returns { code } with captured streams when configured. Native child processes use the context cwd and stdio, and piped output is drained before completion. Tests and documentation cover options, concurrent runs, output, and handover validation.
Run-scoped environment and settings
src/project/env.ts, src/config/env-vars.ts, src/net/npmrc.ts, src/net/proxy.ts, src/cache/store.ts, src/run/exec.ts, test/unit/cli.test.ts, .agents/03-project-spec.md, .agents/08-execution.md, docs/11.api.md
Project environment values merge into the run environment, with existing values retaining precedence. Environment and path resolution in configuration, npmrc, proxy, cache, and executable lookup uses the run context.
Command cwd integration
src/commands/cli.ts, src/commands/info.ts, src/commands/shims.ts, test/unit/cli.test.ts
Command path resolution and project discovery use the run working directory. CLI migration handling no longer restores environment variables after command execution.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5e993

Embedded runs on Windows may start package managers without the system PATH, preventing them from finding required helper programs. Fix the environment lookup before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5e993

The inspected execution paths keep each run’s environment and captured output separate, and preserve restrictions on project-supplied security settings. No introduced security defect was established. Residual risk comes from the breadth of the execution change and incomplete coverage of exceptional asynchronous behavior.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security scope is the embedding process and its local tool subprocesses, selected projects, configuration files, and accessible stores. Per-run context isolation separates configuration and output ownership; it is not an operating-system sandbox or a restriction on the tool’s filesystem privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Repository configuration remains lower-trust than caller configuration. Project npmrc files cannot supply authentication or TLS settings and cannot expand environment variables. Allowed user/global expansion uses the active run environment, and its parsed configuration is memoized within that run rather than shared across scoped calls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Captured output is retained in per-run arrays and concatenated when dispatch completes. The inspected collection path has no byte limit, so selecting pipe introduces host-memory consumption proportional to tool output. This is a resource-containment consideration, not an established attacker-reachable vulnerability.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For embedders handling variable or untrusted output volumes, consider an explicit capture-size limit or streaming alternative with documented overflow behavior, to bound host-memory use.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#19] is directly linked and has coding requirements. The PR adds cwd, env, and stdio to non-handover runMain. runScoped resolves cwd, copies env, validates stdio, and isolates each run with AsyncLocalStorage. Runtime code uses the scoped cwd and environment. Native execution applies the scoped cwd, environment, stdio, and output collection. Jup output uses the same sinks. Handover rejects these options with TypeError. Tests cover concurrent runs, environment isolation, captured and ignored output, Jup errors, and invalid combinations.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue [#19]. Context helpers, native execution changes, CLI path updates, API types, documentation, tests, and the warm-path ceiling directly support scoped cwd, environment, stdio, handover validation, or isolation. No unrelated functional change is demonstrated.

- Line 57: Preserve case-insensitive environment-variable lookup on Windows for
the copied run environment. Add or reuse a helper that wraps copied environment
objects with case-insensitive get, has, set, and delete behavior, apply it when
constructing the environment in createRunContext, and apply it again to the
merged environment in setRunEnv so childEnvironment, lookupOnPath, whichAll, and
directoryOnPath continue resolving PATH and PATHEXT correctly.
