fix(hydration): preserve native <template> elements during hydration - #16169
Hydrating a component that renders a native <template> element — a <template> with no v-if/v-for/v-slot, one inside v-pre, or h('template') — destroys the element. <div><template><p>hidden</p></template></div> hydrates into <div><p><p>hidden</p></p></div> with a node mismatch warning, turning inert template content into live DOM. An empty <template></template> throws TypeError: Failed to execute 'replaceChild' on 'Node': parameter 1 is not of type 'Node', because content.firstChild is null.
hydrateElement in packages/runtime-core/src/hydration.ts treats every isTemplateNode(el) as the <template> wrapper that compiler-ssr emits around the child of a <Transition appear>, and replaces it with el.content.firstChild without checking the client vnode. The unwrap is now skipped when the vnode's own type is template, so only the SSR wrapper is unwrapped. Since a native <template>'s children are parsed into its inert content fragment rather than the element, hydrateChildren is given el.content.firstChild in that case — otherwise the start node is null and the children are reported as a mismatch.
The unwrap branch was introduced in 5ea8a8a (#8859) to make <Transition appear> work with SSR; that path is unaffected, as the client vnode there is the transition's child, not a template.
hydrateElement unwrapped any <template> in the SSR output, assuming it
was the wrapper emitted for a <Transition appear> child. Skip the unwrap
when the client vnode is itself a template, and hydrate its children
from the inert content fragment.
Hydration now distinguishes native <template> elements from transition-appear wrappers. It reads native template children from the inert content fragment. Tests cover templates with children, empty templates, and render-function-created templates.
Changes: Native template hydration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Preserve native templates during hydration packages/runtime-core/src/hydration.ts, packages/runtime-core/__tests__/hydration.spec.ts
Hydration replaces a template wrapper only when the client vnode is not a native template. For native templates, it starts array-child hydration at el.content.firstChild. Tests check preserved markup, no mismatch warning, and no error for an empty template.
Native templates are preserved in basic cases, but some templates can still fail hydration or retain incorrect content, and later child additions can be misplaced. Resolve these cases before merging.
Pre-merge checks: 5
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: hydration now keeps native <template> elements intact instead of unwrapping them. The raw summary and objectives both describe this change in hydrateElement, where the SSR <Transition appear> unwrap is skipped for client template vnodes, and hydration starts from el.content.firstChild. The added tests cover template hydration, so the title matches the changeset. It is specific, uses the conventional fix(hydration) prefix, and is 68 characters long.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Only #16167 is linked, as a direct issue. Its coding requirement: hydration must keep native <template> elements intact (no directives, inside v-pre, or via h('template')), with no mismatch warning and no error for empty templates.
The change in hydrateElement (packages/runtime-core/src/hydration.ts) adds (type as string) !== 'template' to the isTemplateNode(el) unwrap guard. The unwrap now runs only when the client vnode is not a native template, so the SSR <Transition appear> wrapper path is unchanged. For a native template vnode, the code skips the replaceNode(content, el) call that caused the reported mismatch and the replaceChild TypeError on empty templates. The vnode type check covers v-pre and h('template') because those produce a vnode of type 'template' too.
Children are hydrated from el.content.firstChild when el is a template node. Native template children are parsed into the inert content fragment, so the start node is no longer null.
Tests in packages/runtime-core/tests/hydration.spec.ts (#16167 describe block) cover: a template with child content (asserts innerHTML equals the input and no mismatch warning), an empty template (asserts no throw and unchanged innerHTML), and a render-function h('template', [h('p','x')]) (asserts unchanged markup and no warning). No test covers the v-pre case explicitly. The source change applies to it through the same vnode type check.
No coding requirement remains unmet in the reviewed diff. Test execution was not performed; this result rests on source and test diff reading.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base (8b479a8) touches two files only: packages/runtime-core/src/hydration.ts (+7/-2) and packages/runtime-core/tests/hydration.spec.ts (+36/-0).
The hydration.ts changes are the guard on the SSR template unwrap and the content.firstChild selection for child hydration. Both implement #16167. The comments added in the source name #16167 and explain the native template behavior.
The spec additions are the three #16167 regression tests described in the linked-issue assessment. They support the objective directly.
No unrelated refactoring, file, or behavior change appears in the reviewed diff.
Residual note, not a scope finding: after hydration, a native template's children live in content, but later client-side patches insert into the template element. This behavior is not covered by the issue or the tests. It does not affect the reviewed requirement and is not a basis for an out-of-scope finding.

Unwrap appear transitions around native templates.
When <Transition appear> has a native <template> child, hydration adopts the SSR wrapper instead of the child. The wrapper remains in the DOM, and the child’s vnode points to the wrong element. Distinguish the transition wrapper before hydrating the native template.

Hydrate template text through its content fragment.
When a native template has string children, compare and update el.content.textContent instead of el.textContent. Matching text currently causes a false mismatch and adds a separate text node. Differing text leaves the server text in the content fragment.
