Summary

  • Quick setup near the top of README: install step (npm or Homebrew) plus a one-line table. Claude Code and Codex commands are copied from docs/clients/claude-code.md and docs/clients/codex.md (PAT option). Cursor, VS Code, and JSON clients link to their guides. No deprecated env vars.
  • How we compare: add a GitLab official MCP server column and a short bullet list. Facts come from the official MCP server page (doc/user/model_context_protocol/mcp_server.md on master):
    • Free / Premium / Ultimate; moved to Free in 19.2; GA in 19.5
    • access is allowed per top-level group on GitLab.com, per instance on Self-Managed / Dedicated
    • remote HTTP /api/v4/mcp with OAuth 2.0 DCR; stdio through mcp-remote (Node.js 20+)
    • toolsets header and the optional tool-name prefix header (32 chars)
    • GitLab.com rate limits are left out: the doc says their feature flags are off by default.
  • docs/comparison/community-gitlab-mcp-a.md: fix the stale "Premium/Ultimate, Beta" note on the official server. docs/comparison/index.md: one-line link to the official server.
  • Same changes in README.ko.md, README.zh-CN.md, README.pt-BR.md (docs-sync keeps the four READMEs aligned).

Badge and install-button lines are untouched (handled in the badge PR).

Tests

  • make docs (mkdocs build --strict): pass
  • npm run check:skill-sync, npm run docs:tools (no drift), npm run test:schema, npm run build: pass

Breaking change

No. Docs only.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added local installation instructions using a Personal Access Token, with npm and Homebrew options and setup guidance for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, and JSON-based clients.
    • Expanded comparisons with details about GitLab’s official MCP server, including its availability, access requirements, connection options, tools, and toolset configuration.
    • Linked to official GitLab MCP documentation and the full community-server comparison.
    • Clarified that OAuth client registration is generally available in GitLab 19.5, and that a pre-registered application is needed when self-registration is disabled.

Walkthrough

The README files add local PAT installation instructions and setup guidance for supported clients. They also compare this project with GitLab’s official MCP server. Comparison documentation updates details about server availability and OAuth Dynamic Client Registration.

Self-Managed and Dedicated can turn dynamic client registration off, and clients then need a pre-registered OAuth application.
