docs(docker): make Docker quick starts start on first run - #849
Conversation
The Docker Hub `docker run` snippet started Streamable HTTP with a server-side PAT but no STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN, and docker/.env.example enabled SSE without SSE_AUTH_TOKEN. Startup validation rejects both, so the server exited immediately. - DOCKERHUB.md: set STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN, add an MCP client config with the matching Bearer header, document the variable. - .env.example: default to Streamable HTTP with HOST=0.0.0.0 and a STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN placeholder; keep SSE as a commented option; use gitlab.com as the default API URL and leave GITLAB_PROJECT_ID empty. - docker-compose.yaml: pass STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN and REMOTE_AUTHORIZATION through to the container. - docker/README.md: fill in the empty "Override environment variables" step with the required values and a client config. - Treat empty USE_GITLAB_WIKI / USE_MILESTONE / USE_PIPELINE values as unset in deprecation warnings (same as GITLAB_READ_ONLY_MODE), so compose no longer logs three warnings on every start.

An unedited copy of .env.example now fails startup with the existing 'requires ... STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN' message instead of running with a placeholder value.
Summary
The Docker quick starts exited on first run, because startup validation rejected the configs they showed:
Changes:
docker/DOCKERHUB.md:docker runexample now generates a token and passes it inSTREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN.Authorization: Bearerheader.SSEneedsSSE_AUTH_TOKEN.docker/.env.example:HOST=0.0.0.0and an emptySTREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKENthat must be set. An unedited copy fails startup with the existing "requires ...STREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKEN" error instead of running with a placeholder value.REMOTE_AUTHORIZATION=trueas the per-client-token alternative.SSE_AUTH_TOKEN.https://gitlab.com/api/v4as the default API URL and leavesGITLAB_PROJECT_IDempty.docker/docker-compose.yaml: passesSTREAMABLE_HTTP_AUTH_TOKENandREMOTE_AUTHORIZATIONthrough to the container.docker/README.md: fills in the empty "Override environment variables" step with the required values and a client config.deprecated-env.ts: compose passesUSE_GITLAB_WIKI=${USE_GITLAB_WIKI}etc., so these arrive as empty strings when unset. Empty values are now treated as unset (the same handling asGITLAB_READ_ONLY_MODE), so compose no longer logs three deprecation warnings on every start.Related issue
None.
Tests
npm run buildandnpx tsc --noEmit: pass.npm run test:mock(Node 22.21.1): pass, 0 failures.test/deprecated-env.test.tshas a new case: empty legacy values produce no warnings.Ran
build/index.jswith exactly the env from each documented setup, on port 3002:/mcpwithout token/mcpwith Bearer tokendocker run.env.example+ compose env list.env.example, token left emptydocker runI ran the checks that cover this change.
Docs
README.md,README.ko.md,README.zh-CN.md, andREADME.pt-BR.mdmatch when user-facing behavior, env vars, flags, or examples changed. (The root README Docker examples already setSSE_AUTH_TOKENorREMOTE_AUTHORIZATION, so they are unchanged.)docs/matches the same behavior.Breaking change
No. The only code change makes empty legacy flag values produce no deprecation warning. Tool behavior is unchanged.
