Since the move to undici, a tool call whose request never gets an HTTP response fails with only "fetch failed". The OS or TLS reason (ECONNREFUSED, ENOTFOUND, UNABLE_TO_VERIFY_LEAF_SIGNATURE, ...) stays on error.cause, which never reaches the client. handleToolCall now rethrows undici's "fetch failed" TypeError as "GitLab request failed before an HTTP response (<code>): <message>. <hint>", reusing the classifier health_check already uses. The error is still a JSON-RPC error and still goes through masking; other errors are unchanged.
…pository Both tools catch their own errors and return the message as text, so they still showed only "fetch failed" when GitLab gave no HTTP response. They now use the same reason and hint as other tool calls.

Maintainer review (Cursor CLI + gitlab-mcp-maintainer)
Verdict: APPROVE
No P0/P1.
describeFetchTransportError rewrites only undici's exact TypeError("fetch failed") and reuses classifyHealthCheckTransportError (same credential redaction). execute_graphql and fork_repository apply it in their local catches; other tools hit the handleToolCall catch. Anything else is rethrown unchanged, so HTTP / GitLabApiError results stay isError tool results. The SDK JSON-RPC error carries error.message only, not cause.
CI test on 65760d7 passed.
Motivation
Since node-fetch was replaced with undici (6216692, 2026-09-02), a tool call whose request never gets an HTTP response fails with only:
undici keeps the actual reason (
ECONNREFUSED,ENOTFOUND,UNABLE_TO_VERIFY_LEAF_SIGNATURE, ...) onerror.cause, which never reaches the client. node-fetch used to include it in the message. So a wrongGITLAB_API_URL, a proxy problem, or a missing CA chain all look the same, and the user has to restart with debug logging to find out which one it is. Self-managed TLS setups are a recurring support topic (#70, #109, #187).#801 / #811 / #827 fixed this for
health_check, which now returns a structured{kind, code, message, hint}result. #793 turned HTTP failures intoisErrortool results. Every other tool still gets the bare "fetch failed".What changed
utils/health-check-transport-error.ts: newdescribeFetchTransportError(error). For undici'sTypeError("fetch failed")it returns a message built from the existingclassifyHealthCheckTransportError(same codes, same credential redaction), plus a short hint per kind. It returnsnullfor anything else.index.ts(handleToolCallcatch): when that returns a message, rethrownew Error(message, { cause }). Everything else is rethrown unchanged.execute_graphqlandfork_repositorycatch their own errors and return the text, so they use the same message (GraphQL request failed: <reason>,Failed to fork repository: <reason>).Example, before → after:
The TLS case reuses health_check's hint (
NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS/GITLAB_CA_CERT_PATHwith the full chain).Impact
isErrorhandling), and the CLI prints it the same way.GITLAB_MASKING_ENABLEDmasking still applies. URL credentials and tokens in the cause message are redacted by the existing classifier.Tests
test/utils/health-check-transport-error.test.ts: DNS (exact message), TLS hint, no-code fallback, token redaction, nullfor non-undici errors.test/gitlab-api-tool-errors.test.ts: new stdio test that callsverify_namespaceagainst a closed local port and checks the message namesECONNREFUSED, includes the hint, and has the masked host and no token. It fails on main (MCP error -32603: fetch failed) and passes here.test/gitlab-api-tool-errors.test.ts: the same check forexecute_graphqlandfork_repository, which fails without the change (GraphQL request failed: fetch failed).npm run build, npx tsc --noEmit,npm run format:check: pass.npm run lint: 0 errors (1029 warnings, same as main).npm run docs:tools: no diff.npm run test:mock(Node 22.21.1): exit 0, 1760 tests, 0 failures.Rebased onto main (8a60f4d) and re-ran the mock suite: all files pass.
mcp-oauth-tests.tstimed out once on a loaded machine and passes when run alone (34/34).
