Summary

Ship an official MCP Bundle (.mcpb) so Claude Desktop users can install the server with one click, without Node/npm setup or hand-edited JSON config.

What's in the bundle

manifest.json (MCPB manifest_version 0.3, the current default of @anthropic-ai/mcpb; 0.4 only adds the Python uv server type):

  • server.type: node, entry_point: build/index.js, args: ["${__dirname}/build/index.js"]
  • user_config → env:
user_config key env var default
gitlab_personal_access_token (sensitive, required) GITLAB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN none
gitlab_api_url GITLAB_API_URL https://gitlab.com/api/v4
gitlab_permission_mode GITLAB_PERMISSION_MODE full (same as every other install path)
gitlab_toolsets GITLAB_TOOLSETS "" (lean core default)
gitlab_masking_enabled (boolean) GITLAB_MASKING_ENABLED false

Every optional field has a default on purpose. The host's replaceVariables() leaves ${user_config.x} as a literal string when a key has no value and no default. getConfig() already treats "" as unset, so the empty toolsets default is safe.

  • tools_generated: true (the tool list depends on permission mode and toolsets), privacy_policies points to GitLab's privacy policy, compatibility.runtimes.node matches engines (>=18.17.0).

Build

npm run pack:mcpb → npm run build + scripts/pack-mcpb.sh:

  1. Stages build/, package.json, package-lock.json, LICENSE in a temp dir outside the repo, using the same layout as the npm package (build/server/version.js reads ../../package.json).
  2. Stamps manifest.version from package.json, so the bundle version always matches the release. The repo copy stays valid standalone, and release.sh is unchanged.
  3. npm ci --omit=dev --ignore-scripts, then npx --yes @anthropic-ai/mcpb@2.1.2 pack. The CLI is pinned via npx, the same way npm-publish.yml runs npm@11.5.2, so there is no new devDependency and no lockfile churn.

Output: gitlab-mcp.mcpb at the repo root (gitignored), or a path given as the first argument, relative to the caller's directory. The bundle is about 5.9 MB packed and 18.7 MB unpacked.

Release automation

New workflow .github/workflows/mcpb-release.yml (separate from npm-publish.yml, so that workflow's permissions stay untouched):

  • release: published → pack from the release tag and gh release upload <tag> gitlab-mcp.mcpb --clobber
  • workflow_dispatch with a tag input → re-attach to an existing release
  • pull_request on changes to manifest.json, scripts/pack-mcpb.sh, or the workflow → pack only, no upload
  • contents: write only at job level. actions/checkout and actions/setup-node are pinned to their v4.4.0 commit SHAs, and checkout uses persist-credentials: false, so the write token reaches only the upload step.

The asset name is stable, so https://github.com/zereight/gitlab-mcp/releases/latest/download/gitlab-mcp.mcpb always points to the newest bundle. That link starts working with the first release cut after this merges. Existing tags (v2.3.1 and earlier) don't contain manifest.json, so they can't be backfilled.

Docs

  • Short "Claude Desktop one-click install (MCP Bundle)" section in README.md, README.ko.md, README.zh-CN.md, README.pt-BR.md (same spot, same env vars). It says the bundle ships with releases after v2.3.1, so nobody expects the latest link to work today.
  • CHANGELOG Unreleased → Added entry.

Verification

  • mcpb pack schema validation passes (strict 0.3 schema).
  • Unzipped the bundle into an empty temp dir outside the repo and drove build/index.js over stdio (initialize + tools/list):
    • defaults → serverInfo.version 2.3.1, 39 tools, stdout carries only JSON-RPC, no module-resolution errors on stderr
    • readonly + GITLAB_TOOLSETS=all + masking on → 142 tools, no delete_*
  • Ran getMcpConfigForManifest() from @anthropic-ai/mcpb@2.1.2 against this manifest. Every env value is substituted (no leftover ${user_config.*}), and a missing token returns undefined (the host won't launch).
  • npm run lint (0 errors), npx tsc --noEmit, npm run check:runtime-deps, npm run test:consumer-smoke, npm run test:mock (Node 22.21.1)
  • actionlint on the new workflow, prettier --check manifest.json package.json

Not in scope

  • No bundle icon. The repo has no logo asset yet, and icon is optional in the spec.
  • Bundle signing (mcpb sign) needs a code-signing certificate and can follow separately.

31-31: Automatic release runs and manual workflow_dispatch runs use different checkout refs.

For release events, github.event.release.tag_name is used. For workflow_dispatch, inputs.tag is used. This is consistent. A manual run with a mistyped tag fails at checkout, which is acceptable. The Attach bundle step on a workflow_dispatch run has no check that inputs.tag names an existing release. Missing releases fail in gh release upload, so the behavior is safe.

One concern remains. The release job packs the tagged source, but the workflow file comes from the default-branch version for release events. A release tag created before this PR merged has no scripts/pack-mcpb.sh or manifest.json. A workflow_dispatch backfill against such a tag, for example v2.3.1, fails at npm run pack:mcpb. The PR already says backfill is out of scope, so no change is needed.

26-30: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Reject this concern.

getConfig treats an empty CLI or environment value as unset. An empty GITLAB_PERMISSION_MODE therefore becomes undefined, skips validation, and defaults to full. The same behavior prevents empty API URL and toolset values from overriding their server defaults.

9-9: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Relative OUTPUT path is resolved from the wrong directory.

The script runs cd to the repository root. npx ... pack "$stage_dir" "$OUTPUT" then runs from that same root. A caller who passes a relative path as $1 therefore gets the file written under the repository root, not under their own working directory. The default gitlab-mcp.mcpb works as intended. Resolve the path before the cd, or document that $1 is relative to the repository root.

Proposed fix
-cd "$(dirname "$0")/.."
-OUTPUT="${1:-gitlab-mcp.mcpb}"
+OUTPUT="${1:-gitlab-mcp.mcpb}"
+case "$OUTPUT" in /*) ;; *) OUTPUT="$PWD/$OUTPUT" ;; esac
+cd "$(dirname "$0")/.."

This changes the default output location. The default would then be written to the caller's working directory, not the repository root. The workflow and npm run both run from the repository root, so they are not affected.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add package.json to the pull request path filter.

A pull request that changes only package.json does not trigger this workflow. That file defines pack:mcpb, the command used to create the bundle, and the package dependencies installed before packaging. The pull request then has no MCPB packaging validation.

Add manifest.json (MCPB manifest_version 0.3, node server, build/index.js
entry point) with user_config for the Personal Access Token (sensitive,
required), GITLAB_API_URL, GITLAB_PERMISSION_MODE, GITLAB_TOOLSETS and
GITLAB_MASKING_ENABLED mapped to env. Every optional field has a default
so the host never passes an unsubstituted ${user_config.*} placeholder.

scripts/pack-mcpb.sh stages build/, package.json, LICENSE and production
node_modules outside the repo, stamps the manifest version from
package.json, and runs a pinned @anthropic-ai/mcpb pack. Exposed as
npm run pack:mcpb.

The MCP Bundle workflow packs on PRs that touch the bundle files and
attaches gitlab-mcp.mcpb to published releases (or a tag given via
workflow_dispatch), so releases/latest/download/gitlab-mcp.mcpb stays
a stable link.
- Pin actions/checkout and actions/setup-node to the v4.4.0 commit SHAs
in the MCP Bundle workflow, which runs with contents: write.
- READMEs: the bundle ships with releases after v2.3.1, so the
releases/latest link only resolves from the next release on.
- pack-mcpb.sh: resolve a relative output path from the caller's
directory instead of the repository root.

package.json defines pack:mcpb and the bundled dependencies, so PRs that only touch it now run the pack check too. Dependency bump PRs will also run it (read-only token, about a minute).

No serious issues on security, breaking changes, secrets, CI/workflow, or packaging.

Checked:

  • Release path: scripts/release.sh runs gh release create with a user token, so release: published fires this workflow like the npm/docker/registry ones.
  • Token scope: contents: write is job-only, checkout uses persist-credentials: false, GH_TOKEN is set only on the upload step, and tag_name/inputs.tag reach the shell only through quoted env vars.
  • Packaging: the 143 production deps have no install scripts, os/cpu limits, or native optional deps, so the Linux-built bundle runs on darwin/win32 too. build wipes build/ first, and the staging dir copies only build/, package.json, package-lock.json, LICENSE (no .env or local files). Pack + schema validation pass on CI.
  • Breaking: additive only. files: ["build"] keeps manifest.json out of the npm tarball, and nothing else reads a root manifest.json.

Pushed 73936f9 for the CodeRabbit leftover (package.json in the PR path filter).

Possible follow-up hardening, not a blocker: split into a read-only pack job and a write-only upload job, so npm ci/tsc/npx @anthropic-ai/mcpb never run in a job holding contents: write.
