LGTM. With wait true the tool records the pre-rebase sha and returns previous_sha / head_changed; wait false is unchanged. No serious issues on the severity pass.

Sorry I didn't make this change in the first place. I found this to be a useful feature only after testing it for a while in real scenarios. |
What
With
waittrue (the default),rebase_merge_requestnow reads the merge request once before it sendsPUT /projects/:id/merge_requests/:merge_request_iid/rebase, and keeps itssha. When the wait ends, the tool returns the merge request as before, plus two top-level fields:previous_sha(theshabefore thePUT) andhead_changed(true when the finalshais notprevious_sha). The fields are at the top level, so ajmespathfilter can select them, for example{head_changed: head_changed, merge_error: merge_error}. The tool description,skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.mdandskills/gitlab-mcp/reference/merge-requests.mddescribe the two fields. The commit also has the regenerateddocs/tools/pages and.well-known/mcp/server-card.json.Details:
GET /projects/:id/merge_requests/:merge_request_iid?include_rebase_in_progress=true, throughgetMergeRequestRebaseStatus.head_changed: falsemeans that the head did not move, and thatmerge_errorgives the reason when GitLab sends one. It does not claim more than that. It also says thatmerge_errorcan keep a message from an earlier attempt, so it alone does not prove that this attempt failed.waitfalse, nothing changes: the tool sends no extra request and returns the enqueue response of GitLab as before. Why
This is a follow-up to #844, which added the tool. A failed rebase, for example a conflict, also ends with
rebase_in_progress: false.MergeRequests::RebaseServicedoes not clearmerge_errorafter a successful rebase, so the field can keep the message of an earlier attempt. Before this change, the caller had to compareshawith its value before the rebase. A caller that did not do that comparison could take a failure for a success. Now the tool does the comparison and reports it inhead_changed.How tested
npm run build, npx tsc --noEmit,npm run format:check, npm run check:skill-syncandnpm run test:consumer-smoke: pass.npm run lint: 0 errors.npm run docs:tools: the regenerated pages are in the commit, and a second run gives no drift.scripts/generate-server-card.tsregenerated.well-known/mcp/server-card.json.test/test-rebase-merge-request.ts: 11 of 11 tests pass. The changes on purpose:GETof the merge request, and a waiting call now sends one moreGETbefore thePUT. Thus each waiting mock starts with one more state for that read. The success case now expects 3GETrequests instead of 2, and the failure case expects 2. EachGETstill sendsinclude_rebase_in_progress=true.previous_sha(the oldsha),head_changed: true, and that exactly oneGETcomes before thePUT.merge_errorand the samesha, checksprevious_shaandhead_changed: false.GEThandler, because the tool reads the merge request before thePUT. The test still checks the 403 error of thePUT.waitfalse test still checks that the tool sends noGETand returns exactly{"rebase_in_progress": true}, so the result has no new field.main: the 6 new asserts and the changedGETcount fail there, and they pass on this branch. Thewaitfalse asserts cannot fail onmain, because that path does not change. Thus I ran them against a deliberately broken build that reads the merge request and addsprevious_shaon that path, and both asserts failed.npm run test:mockon Windows 11 (Node 26.4.0): the unit stage fails on this platform, andset -ethen stops the script, so I also ran all stages withoutset -e. All failures are outside this change: 11 depend on the platform (9fs.symlinkSynccalls getEPERM, 1 test getsEACCES, 1 test expects file mode0o600), and 3 fail in the same way on a Windows build ofmain(2 intest/callback-proxy-redirect-policy.test.ts, 1 intest/test-dynamic-project-scope.ts).test/streamable-http-unauthenticated-discovery.test.tsfailed once in the full run and then did not exit; alone, it passes 8 of 8 on this branch and onmain.test:mockrun usedmainata72c08b. The branch is now on5eb0930, and the three commits between them change only CI, release scripts,Dockerfileandserver.json. After the move, I rannpm run build, npx tsc --noEmit,npm run lint, npm run format:check, npm run check:skill-sync,npm run docs:tools,test/test-rebase-merge-request.tsandtest/test-permission-mode.tsagain: all pass, with no docs drift.Breaking changes
None. A waiting call returns two more fields, and the result of
waitfalse does not change. A waiting call sends one moreGETrequest before thePUT.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
