An ordinary partial log line should not invalidate the existing marker/report fallback. A concurrent write detected during validation should trigger a bounded re-read, not permanently erase the last verified checkpoint.
Retry changed reads at most once, revalidate the consumed prefix, and disable the unchanged-stat shortcut after a conflict. If both attempts change, return unavailable and retry validation on the next request; never serve unchecked cached history. Canonical-path, descriptor, size-limit, lifecycle-switch and revocation failures remain fail-closed.
Log observation remains sticky for the process birth: a first-read conflict followed by descriptor loss cannot revive stale marker/report fallback. Without an already verified checkpoint, recovery may require a fresh registration rather than guessing authority.
Tracks YuuuXie#4. Independent branch from upstream main e04cb9f9, not stacked on #1955. This does not solve recovery after lifecycle/marker authority actually disappears.
Validation
Copilot unit regressions: 56 passed, including the confirmed review finding about a first-read race followed by descriptor loss. The regression failed before the fix and passes after it.
Deterministic owned-log fixtures cover marker fallback across ordinary partial/completed lines, pending/completed unregister, registered and fallback read races, one retry succeeding, exhausted retries followed by recovery, and real revocation staying rejected.
Typecheck passed.
Independent code/results review: no significant issues.
Initial f56dc491 Fast passed: 7,292 unit tests passed, 0 failed, 24 skipped.
Current 0e8e8cf8 Fast passed workflow syntax, generated checks, typecheck and build; units were 7,292 passed, 1 failed, 24 skipped. The sole failure is the unchanged installer's wall-clock lower bound (18,945 ms versus 19,000 ms). No test/assertion was weakened and this branch's latest full gate is not claimed green.
The combined integration revision 073d7558 (these fixes, fix(copilot): bind verified parent-to-child session handoffs #1955, raw-input fix, and upstream e49276df) passed source-verified full Fast: 7,303 passed, 0 failed, 24 skipped, plus all 4 isolated Copilot HTTP contracts.
The initiating write behind the original live flicker was not captured; the mechanisms above are fixture-reproduced. Full browser/integration lanes and native Windows were not run locally on this branch.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved Copilot Chat session continuity when logs contain incomplete lines or are being written concurrently. A transient read conflict can be retried without losing the last verified session checkpoint.
Session discovery can recover on a subsequent read after repeated concurrent changes interrupt a scan. Pending or completed unregister records continue to invalidate the session, and stale session markers are not reused after a raced read.
Copilot foreground-log scans now retry once when they detect concurrent file changes. A second conflict returns an unavailable result. Checkpoints track read conflicts, and Linux-only tests cover partial log lines, concurrent appends, recovery, and unregister records.

Summary
Conflict retry and session validation server/copilot-store.ts, server/copilot.test.ts, changelog.d/copilot-transient-log-reads.md
Foreground checkpoints track read conflicts. A scan retries once after detecting a concurrent change. The pending-switch condition treats only undefined as unavailable. Linux-only tests cover partial lines, concurrent appends, session recovery, and unregister records. The changelog describes the continuity and retry behavior.
devswha/ovis#1956: Both changes address separate read stages in the native Copilot transcript path. This PR validates foreground lifecycle-log reads.
devswha/ovis#1652: This PR extends the Copilot transcript selection flow introduced there with foreground-log retry behavior.
devswha/ovis#1955: Both changes update foreground lifecycle checkpoints. This PR adds conflict tracking and retry behavior.

Explanation
The title "fix(copilot): retry transient foreground log reads" names the main change: a bounded retry for changed foreground log reads. The raw summary and objectives confirm a single retry on a changed read, with unavailable returned after two conflicting scans. The title is specific and concise, and it follows the conventional commit style.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Change section that describes the problem (ordinary partial lines invalidating marker/report fallback, and concurrent writes erasing the checkpoint), the resulting behavior (one bounded re-read, fail-closed on other failures, sticky observation), and scope limits. It has a Validation section that lists unit regressions, fixtures, typecheck, and full Fast results, including one failing installer timing test. It also links the tracking issue (YuuuXie#4). The template asks for contract-test coverage for HTTP/WS changes. The author reports four isolated Copilot HTTP contracts passing on the combined revision, but not on this branch alone. The description also does not state whether the changelog entry was added, though the raw summary shows changelog.d/copilot-transient-log-reads.md present.

Keep process-lifetime log observation sticky so an initial concurrent read followed by descriptor loss cannot revive a stale held-session fallback. Cover the read conflict, descriptor disappearance, real close/reopen, and fresh-registration recovery.

0e8e8cf fixes the confirmed observation-loss finding with a one-line runtime correction and a regression that failed before the fix. The published reply in the original thread records the reproduced sequence and validation; independent review found no significant issues. Combined integration073d7558 passed exact-source full Fast7303pass0fail24skip and all4isolated CopilotHTTPcontracts. The PR description separately discloses this branch’s unchanged installer timing failure. No trust, authority or test assertions were weakened.

Thanks, @YuuuXie. The change itself looks right; it only needs a rebase onto current main, which now conflicts in server/copilot-store.ts (three hunks: the sentinel declarations, the checkpoint fields, and the read function's signature).
When resolving, please keep main's VERIFIED_UNREGISTER sentinel, the unregistered checkpoint field and the handoff return types (from #1955) alongside this PR's retry sentinel, readConflict and the scan wrapper. Rebasing after #2024 lands is simplest, since both touch the Copilot reader.
I resolved it that way locally on main plus #2024: all 59 Copilot tests pass, bun run check fast passes (7,437 pass / 0 fail / 24 skip), and reverting this PR's copilot-store.ts change makes 5 of the 6 new tests fail. Reintroducing the observation reset CodeRabbit flagged makes the descriptor-loss test fail too, so that fix is covered. No other changes requested.
Merging at a2e87ce. The merge pass resolved the conflict with main in server/copilot-store.ts (kept main's VERIFIED_UNREGISTER sentinel, the unregistered checkpoint field and the handoff return types next to this PR's retry sentinel, readConflict and scan wrapper), and that merge head passed both merge-pass reviewers (omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex, external-PR strict review: no CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM), bun run check fast (7530 pass / 0 fail) and the required checks. CodeRabbit reviewed the contributor's head 0e8e8cf; it did not review the merge commit, which only brings in main.

## Change
Follow-up to #2025 and #2049. Copilot's foreground-log reader could turn
a temporary
read failure into persistent unavailability, even after normal reads
resumed.
- Preserve an established checkpoint across narrowly retryable
filesystem errors,
but require full prefix revalidation before returning a binding again.
- Recover report-and-marker fallback after an append during the first
log read.
Bootstrap recovery is tied to the same process birth, canonical log
identity and
every byte already read; replacing or losing that evidence still fails
closed.
- Keep the existing two-attempt retry bound and
session-switch/unregister guards.
- Cover the unchanged-metadata shortcut after a failed read and an
incomplete
unregister line in the parent/child handoff path.
This does not recover missing native session reports, introduce
marker-only
authorization, retain Chat after failed refreshes, or change any HTTP
contract.
There is no production deployment in this PR.
Refs #2049. Its release-fold wording note remains for the maintainer's
release pass.
## Validation
- New first-read and temporary-stat regressions failed against the
unchanged base.
- `bun test server/copilot.test.ts`: 65 passed.
- `bun run check run bun test --timeout 15000
./server/copilot.contract.test.ts`:
4 passed, using an isolated Herdr session and synthetic Copilot
processes.
- Independent code review found no substantive issues.
- `UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=4 bun run check fast`: workflow syntax, generated
files,
typecheck and build passed; unit lane finished with **7,666 passed, 1
failed,
28 skipped**. The sole failure was the unchanged JSON highlighting
performance
assertion in `src/lib/highlight.test.ts:178` (52.81 ms versus <50 ms).
That
unchanged file passed separately: 56 tests. This is not a clean full
fast pass.
- Earlier full runs also encountered unchanged installer/browser timing
and
runner-fixture failures; the latter passed after the environment
correction.
No assertions, timeouts or safeguards were weakened.
The last run used the documented CI worker count (4). The local `jq`
dependency
was supplied from an existing jq 1.8.1 binary after a missing-tool
failure.

## Release 0.4.19
The release PR, made by the steps in
[docs/development.md#releasing](docs/development.md#releasing), on main
9d76cca (#2078):
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.19 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.19` moved the
`changelog.d` fragments of 54 PRs into CHANGELOG.md, with PR links, and
deleted them.
- Outside contributors are credited: #1955@YuuuXie, #1957@Noobear,

- **Release summaries:** `release-summaries.json` has the 0.4.19 entry
in en, ko, ja and zh, with the same lists in each: 5 new, 5 improved, 5
fixed. Every English line is at most 70 characters.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` goes from 37 to 38 in
`shared/machines.ts`, because the remote bundle's inputs changed since
`remote-v37`. Once this merges, `remote-v38` is pushed on the merge
commit, and the Remote PC bundles workflow has to finish before the
Release run.
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts` reports: "Release 0.4.19: remote bundle,
telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order." No telemetry Worker
deploy is needed. `bun run check fast` passes locally.
**Not checked on a real Windows PC:** #1989 (Git for Windows' OpenSSH
for remote PCs) and #2016 (Antigravity chat on Windows through the
Restart Manager) ship without their real-device Windows checks, because
the maintainer's Windows test PC is off. The owner accepted releasing
without them. Both will be checked on the real PC when it is back.
The owner approved this release.
