Closes #2012
Closes #2013

What was wrong

#2012, a retired endpoint lost its owner. When a push service answers 404/410, the endpoint is retired, and a browser that hands it over again is told subscription_gone (#1038). The mark expired after 30 days. After that, any device that knew the endpoint could register it with keys of its own. Separately, the mark was keyed by a hash of the raw string, so another spelling of the same URL (E#attacker, https://PUSH.EXAMPLE:443/..., /./ segments) never matched it.

#2013, a failed telemetry write kept a dead subscription. deliver() wrote push-retired.json before removing the subscription, and the write throws on failure. A full disk or a read-only state dir therefore left the retired subscription registered, and the next push went to it again.

Fix

  • Marks never expire. A retired mark has no time limit any more.
    • The list is still bounded by RETIRED_LIMIT (1000, oldest dropped first).
    • The owner's revocation still removes its marks.
    • An owner whose browser hands over the dead endpoint is told subscription_gone as before, and subscribes anew.
    • Delivery records keep their 30-day TTL (DELIVERY_TTL_MS).
  • One retired mark per endpoint, whatever its spelling. A retired mark is keyed by normalizeEndpoint(): the WHATWG serialization without the fragment, which never reaches the push service. The retired check (isRetired) also matches a mark from before this change, which is keyed by the spelling handed over. state-merge.ts checks both hashes.
  • Stored state keeps its spelling. Subscriptions, their push-keys.json key pairs, their delivery history and the merge records stay under the spelling the browser handed over, as on main. Commit 70d12fe went back to this after the merge pass's review: storing endpoints normalized let a key pair kept for an old spelling sign for the live endpoint (403), and let a respelled sibling entry come back after a DELETE.
  • A mark shared by two owners belongs to neither. Two spellings of one endpoint held by different owners share its retired mark, so neither owner's revocation reopens it (e94ee53, CodeRabbit).
  • Failed writes no longer keep a dead subscription. deliver() and revokeDevice() write the retired list through the non-throwing rewriteRetired(): the mark stays in memory, the subscription is removed, and the revocation completes. When push-subscriptions.json itself cannot be written, the retired subscription is dropped in memory. The next successful write, or the device's DELETE, leaves it off disk, and a restart does not load a subscription whose endpoint is retired. While the retired list is unwritten (a revocation's removal included), a subscribe writes it first, so a removed mark cannot come back at a restart and drop the new subscription (e94ee53, CodeRabbit).

Known limits:

  • A query string and percent-encoding are kept as they are. WNS (Edge) endpoints carry their token in the query (https://*.notify.windows.com/w/?token=...), so dropping it would merge distinct subscriptions. Checking without the query would let a paired device retire https://<wns host>/w/ and lock out every Edge user on that host. A query variant of a retired endpoint is a separate subscription: it never displaces the owner's record, and its first push gets 404/410 and retires it.
  • A mark written before this change under a non-canonical spelling (only ever a crafted one, since browsers hand over canonical endpoints) is a hash of that spelling. The canonical URL cannot be matched to it, because a hash cannot be turned back into a spelling. The exact old spelling is still refused.

Verification

  • server/push.test.ts and server/state-merge.test.ts: 102 pass on 70d12fe. The three tests added for the merge pass's findings fail on d7458cf's code: a key pair left for an old spelling, a respelled sibling entry, and a restart after a failed removal write.
  • With main's server/push.ts, the original regressions fail:
    • 31 days after the retirement, a watch device's POST is refused.
    • The #fragment and HTTP://host/push/x/../id spellings are refused on subscribe and on test.
    • With push-retired.json unwritable, a 410 removes the subscription, and subscribing again gets 410.
    • The normalization check.
    • The updated expiry case, which used to assert the 30-day expiry.
  • The four tests added after review fail on the first commit's code: legacy raw-hash marks and history, the subscription file failing to write after a 410, revocation with an unwritable retired list, and the state merge with another spelling.
  • Live server (createServer on a mkdtemp state dir, a token sign-in and a paired watch device, holding a mark 31 days old), curl -i POST /api/push/subscribe from the watch device:
    • This branch: E, E#attacker and https://PUSH.EXAMPLE:443/wpush/v2/./retired-endpoint each get 410 subscription_gone. An unrelated endpoint gets 204.
    • Main's push.ts: all four get 204, and the three spellings are stored as three subscriptions.
  • bun run check fast: green on the final head.
  • Reviews:
    • omo-native-code-reviewer: PASS. Its two MEDIUMs are fixed (the wording of the claim, and revocation with an unwritable list).
    • Codex Sol 6.1 fast xhigh, first round: BLOCK. HIGH 1 and MEDIUMs 3-6 are fixed, and HIGH 2 (query variants) is declined for the reason above.
    • Codex final round, on the changes since: PASS, with one MEDIUM. A DELETE after the in-memory-only drop left the subscription on disk. It is fixed, and its test fails without the fix.
    • Merge pass on d7458cf: blocked on two MEDIUM regressions, both fixed in 70d12fe (see Fix). Its own probes give 10 pass and 1 fail on 70d12fe; the one failure is the known limit above.
    • omo-native-code-reviewer on 70d12fe: PASS, with no MEDIUM or above. Its four LOW notes: spellings outside normalization (userinfo, a trailing-dot host, %69d, an empty ?) still register, as on main, and get retired on their first push; the rest are notes.
  • bun run check fast on 70d12fe: green (7879 unit tests pass).
  • CodeRabbit on 70d12fe: three comments, all fixed in e94ee53, with two regression tests that fail on 70d12fe; push and state-merge give 104 pass.
  • bun run check fast on e94ee53: every step passed except two 5-second timeouts in scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, a file this PR doesn't touch. Load was 75 at the time, and that file passes 7/7 when run alone.

REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION: this changes server/, which the remote bundle carries. Per docs/development.md the release PR raises the number, so this PR does not.

…ther spelling, and forget it when its files cannot be written

A retired endpoint's mark expired after 30 days, after which any device that knew the
endpoint could register it with keys of its own, and another spelling of the endpoint (a
fragment, an uppercase host, :443, dot segments) was never matched against the mark at all.
The mark now has no time limit (only RETIRED_LIMIT bounds the list, and the owner's
revocation removes it), and endpoints are stored, compared and retired in one form: the
WHATWG serialization without the fragment. A query string and percent-encoding are kept, as
a push service (WNS) may tell them apart. Marks and delivery history written before this
under the spelling handed over are still found by that spelling, and the state merge
compares the normalized forms too (#2012).

A push answered 404/410 wrote push-retired.json before removing the subscription, so a
failed write threw and kept the dead subscription registered. That write is telemetry and
no longer throws there, nor in a revocation; and when push-subscriptions.json itself cannot
be written, the retired subscription is dropped in memory until a write succeeds (#2013).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Retired push endpoints remain blocked across restarts and after extended periods, including when the same endpoint is presented by another device or in a different URL format.
    • Retired subscriptions are excluded from future push delivery, even when saving subscription changes fails.
    • Revoking a device clears its retired-endpoint record, and subscription changes remain consistent across servers.
    • Delivery history expires independently of retired-endpoint records.

The push service now retains retired endpoint marks, compares normalized and legacy endpoint spellings, and removes dead subscriptions despite retired-list write failures. State merging also checks normalized endpoints against retirement marks.

Changes: Push endpoint retirement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Endpoint identity and retirement retention
server/push.ts, server/push.test.ts
Endpoint checks account for normalized URLs and legacy hashes. Retired marks no longer expire by age; delivery history still expires after 30 days. Tests cover alternate spellings, restarts, and delivery-history expiry.
Subscription cleanup and persistence failures
server/push.ts, server/push.test.ts, changelog.d/push-retired-endpoint-checks.md
Retired-list writes no longer block in-memory mark retention or dead-subscription removal. The service tracks stale subscription storage and retries persistence on later writes or unsubscribe. Tests cover write failures and revocation.
Retirement checks during state merging
server/state-merge.ts, server/state-merge.test.ts
State merging checks normalized endpoint hashes against retired marks. Tests cover retired and unsubscribed endpoints with alternate spellings.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately summarizes the main changes: persistent retired-endpoint refusal, alternate spelling handling, and behavior when state files cannot be written. It is specific and related to the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2012] Retired marks no longer expire. retiredStore() has no age check, and RETIRED_TTL_MS is removed. Marks stay bounded by RETIRED_LIMIT, and revokeDevice still removes the owner's marks. The retired check now uses normalizeEndpoint(), which drops the fragment, so E#attacker matches a retired E. isRetired also checks the legacy raw-spelling hash. Subscribe refusal relies on the shared retired() check. The diff shows no other check path, and the author's live curl evidence shows 410 for E#attacker. [#2013] deliver() calls the non-throwing rewriteRetired() before removing the subscription. If push-subscriptions.json cannot be written, the subscription is dropped in memory and marked stale. load skips retired entries, so a restart does not reload it. revokeDevice also uses rewriteRetired(). Deviation: #2012 asks to normalize endpoints 'before comparing and storing them'. This PR normalizes only the retired check. Subscriptions, push-keys.json, history and merge records keep the handed-over spelling (commit 70d12fe). The author reports that normalized storage caused 403 and resurrection regressions. The stated symptoms are met, and the choice is documented. Residual limits: a mark can be evicted by 1000 later retirements, and query variants are not normalized by design.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed hunk serves #2012 or #2013. In server/push.ts: the no-expiry retired list, normalizeEndpoint() and the retired check, the non-throwing rewriteRetired() in deliver() and revokeDevice(), the in-memory drop with stale, the load-time skip of retired entries, and the unsubscribe persist when stale. The split of DELIVERY_TTL_MS from RETIRED_TTL_MS is required because the retired TTL is removed. server/state-merge.ts uses the same normalized retired check during takeover, which keeps the merge consistent with retirement. The changelog entry and the test additions cover these same changes. The doc-comment edits describe the changed behaviour. No unrelated functional change was found in the reviewed hunks.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and directly explains the problems, fixes, known limits, and validation results. It uses equivalent headings instead of the template's exact "Change" and "Validation" headings, and it provides HTTP behavior checks through live-server tests.

…s as handed over

Storing endpoints normalized changed the identity of state kept under the spelling a
browser handed over: a key pair push-keys.json kept for an old spelling signed for the
live one (403), and the other state dir's next write respelled a subscription taken over
and deleted here, so the next merge took it again (merge-pass review of #2140).

Subscriptions, their key pairs, their history and the merge records stay under the
spelling handed over, as before. Only a retired mark is keyed by the normalized endpoint,
and the retired check also takes a mark from before by the spelling handed over. A
subscription the file still lists while its endpoint is retired (its removal could not be
written) is not loaded again after a restart (#2013).

Merge-pass review of d7458cf (REVIEW-2140.md), addressed in 70d12fe:

  1. MEDIUM, a sibling respelling resurrected a deleted import. Fixed by storing nothing normalized. Subscriptions, their push-keys.json key pairs, their delivery history and the merge records keep the spelling handed over, as on main. Only the retired mark is keyed by the normalized endpoint. Test: server/state-merge.test.ts "do not come back after a goodbye here when the other dir writes its list again" (fails on d7458cf).
  2. MEDIUM, a stale extra-key alias shadowed the live VAPID key. Fixed by the same change, since push-keys.json endpoints are no longer respelled. Test: server/push.test.ts "keeps a subscription and the key pair it was made for under the spelling it was handed over" (fails on d7458cf).
  3. MEDIUM, pre-existing: a legacy raw-hash mark doesn't refuse the canonical URL. Not fixable. Such a mark is the hash of an unknown earlier spelling, and a hash can't be turned back into the URL. The exact old spelling is still refused, and browsers only hand over canonical endpoints, so such a mark could only come from a crafted spelling. It is stated as a known limit in the description.
  4. LOW: a restart re-sent to a durably retired endpoint. Fixed: store() skips a subscription whose endpoint is retired. Test: the extended "stops pushing to a retired subscription when the subscription file cannot be written".
  • omo's load-time collision (the last spelling wins): gone, since nothing is respelled at load.

Evidence:

  • Unit suites: push and state-merge give 102 pass.
  • Your probes on 70d12fe: 10 pass and 1 fail; the one failure is fix(server): cancel an attach whose client leaves before the pty is ready #3.
  • Live curl on a server whose state dir holds a 31-day-old mark: E, E#attacker and HOST:443/./ each get 410, an unrelated endpoint gets 204, and stored endpoints keep their spelling.
  • bun run check fast: green.
  • omo-native-code-reviewer on 70d12fe: PASS, with LOW notes only.

…ation's marks before subscribing again

Two spellings of one endpoint held by different owners share its retired mark, and the
last retirement wrote it for its owner alone, so that owner's revocation reopened the
endpoint. Such a mark now belongs to neither owner.

A revocation whose write of push-retired.json failed removed the mark in memory only. A
subscribe of that endpoint then succeeded, and a restart reloaded the mark and dropped the
subscription. A subscribe now writes the list first while it is unwritten.

The changelog names the 1000-mark bound (CodeRabbit review of #2140).

e94ee53 fixes CodeRabbit's three comments on 70d12fe; each thread is answered and resolved.

  • A shared retired mark: when two owners hold spellings of the same endpoint, their shared mark now belongs to neither, so neither owner's revocation reopens the endpoint.
  • A revocation whose write failed: subscribe now writes the retired list first, so a mark removed in memory can't come back at a restart and drop the new subscription.
  • Changelog wording: it now names the 1000-mark bound.

Two regression tests fail on 70d12fe; push and state-merge give 104 pass. check fast on e94ee53: every step passed except two 5-second timeouts in scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, a file this PR doesn't touch. Load was 75 at the time, and that file passes 7/7 when run alone.

Merging e94ee53 after three merge-pass review rounds:

  • d7458cf: round 1 reproduced two regressions, a deleted subscription resurrected on merge and a stale alias shadowing a VAPID key, plus a load-time collision. The lane fixed them by normalizing only the retired-mark key.
  • 70d12fe: round 2 found two rarer cases, a failed revocation write and an alias shared by two owners.
  • e94ee53: fixes both.

Both reviewers pass this head, and the required checks are green. CodeRabbit did not review this head. The documented legacy-mark limit and the LOW notes go to a follow-up issue.
