feat!: remove anonymous usage counts and the telemetry Worker - #2284
The app reported anonymous installs, updates and daily actives to a Cloudflare Worker, and shipped the machinery for it: a Worker under telemetry/, a shared schema, a collector route, a settings snapshot with a theme allowlist, a Settings > About notice, and a visit counter fed from the status hub. None of it is wanted any more, and it keeps a network path, a credentials file and a release step alive.
Root cause
Not a defect: a feature whose owner decided it should not exist. It is listed here because removing it touches release guards, CI scripts, docs, the socket and the settings store, and each of those has to keep working afterwards.
建议修法(为什么是这个修法)
Delete the feature whole rather than switch it off, because every part of it is only there for the others:
the Worker, its schema and its deploy record are the destination;
the collector route, the client calls and the notice are the senders;
the visit counter in the socket and the status hub is what made a plain page view a reported event;
the release guard's --worker-deployed step exists to keep the deployed Worker's schema in step with the client.
Switch-off leaves all of that reachable and a flag to get wrong. What stays: the push relay and its token (a different feature with its own privacy record), and the release guards for the remote-PC bundle and the release metadata.
Change
Deleted: telemetry/ (worker, wrangler config, README, tests), shared/telemetry.ts, server/telemetry.ts, src/components/TelemetryControls.tsx and its tests, the /api/telemetry route, the settings snapshot and theme allowlist, the client calls (fetchTelemetry, changeTelemetry), the visit counter threaded through server/core/{status,socket,server-core}.ts, and the demo transport's 404 mock.
scripts/release-guards.ts: the Worker fingerprint and workerProblems go; the remote-bundle preflight (publishedProblems, manifestUrl) and the metadata check stay.
CI and scripts stop naming the deleted directory: scripts/ci-tests.ts, conventions/ownership/fixed-sleeps lists, the browser QA env, scripts/pages-gate.ts.
Docs and store copy: no usage-counts section, no Worker deploy/report steps, native-app.md describes only the push relay; the iOS privacy manifest and both store listings declare no analytics.
Tests of the removed feature are deleted; the release fixture loses its recorded Worker.
Evidence
bun run typecheck → 0 errors.
bun test src/lib/conversationFetch.test.ts src/lib/settings.test.ts src/lib/api.test.ts scripts/release-guards.test.ts server/core/socket.test.ts → 126 pass, 0 fail.
bun test src/lib src/components shared scripts server/core → 3383 tests, 16 fail on this branch; 3399 tests, 11 fail on a clean origin/main worktree with the same command. These runs are not green, and their failure counts do not establish regression parity.
Subsequent runs of bun test scripts server/core src/components reported overlapping failures (browser-lane ×4, socket teardown and install.sh cases), but also different failures on each side. Branch-only reported failures included Node selection, xterm build, self-hosted-runner env validation and immediate-submit paste framing; baseline-only reported failures included pending group termination and rust-host checks. Captured output was capped at 20 matching lines, so neither list is a complete failure inventory. Environmental or timing causes remain unverified; no claim of zero introduced failures is made.
scripts/roster-refresh-browser-qa.ts (a manual roster-refresh QA script that travelled with the original branch) is not included.
Broad-suite regression parity remains unresolved. The earlier statement that the narrowed runs failed exactly the same five cases was incorrect; those were only the first observed overlapping failures.
No running-server smoke was performed for the removed telemetry route. Runtime behavior after removal has not been verified here.
The app no longer reports installs, updates or daily actives anywhere.
- Gone: the Cloudflare Worker (telemetry/), the shared schema (shared/telemetry.ts), the collector
and its /api/telemetry route (server/telemetry.ts, server/index.ts), the settings snapshot and its
theme allowlist (src/lib/settings.ts), the client calls (src/lib/api.ts), the notice and the
Settings > About section (src/components/TelemetryControls.tsx), the visit counter in the status hub
and the socket it fed, and the demo transport's 404 mock.
- Release guards no longer track a deployed Worker: scripts/release-guards.ts keeps the remote bundle
and the release metadata, and drops --worker-deployed with its fingerprint.
- CI scripts stop naming the deleted directory (conventions, ownership, fixed-sleeps, ci-tests,
pages-gate's check list, the browser QA env).
- Docs say what is true now: guide has no usage-counts section, development has no Worker deploy or
report steps, native-app describes only the push relay, and the store copy plus the iOS privacy
manifest declare no analytics (the push token stays, as the relay's service-provider record).
- Tests of the removed feature are deleted.
Landed on upstream main — what a reader of this diff should know:
- server/core/{status,socket,server-core}.ts and socket.test.ts: upstream added `browserSnapshot` and
`queueHeld` after this change was written; both stay, only `countVisit` goes.
- scripts/release-guards.ts keeps upstream's `publishedProblems`/`manifestUrl` (remote-bundle
preflight) and loses only the Worker block (`WORKER_SOURCES`, `DEPLOYED_FILE`, `workerFingerprint`,
`workerProblems`).
- scripts/release-guards.test.ts: the `workerProblems` case is gone; the release fixture is upstream's.
Its "patch notes are missing" case changed `server/index.ts`, which the bundle guard (correctly)
flags — it changes `src/App.tsx` now, so the notes are the only thing that can fail there.
- src/lib/api.ts keeps upstream's conversation cache constants: the page-size/cache work is a
separate change, and its test (`conversationFetch.test.ts`) is upstream's here.
- scripts/roster-refresh-browser-qa.ts (unrelated to telemetry) is not part of this change.
Verified on this branch: bun run typecheck (0 errors); bun test src shared scripts server/core;
bun test of the five touched files (126 pass); bun run build.
The About section now displays plugin names, versions, available actions, and whether those actions are enabled.
Changes
Usage analytics and usage-count reporting have been removed, along with the related settings and notice.
Privacy disclosures now state that no usage analytics or location data is sent to the developer. When push alerts are enabled, the push relay retains the phone’s push token to forward alerts; the token is dropped when alerts are turned off.
Updated privacy and development documentation to reflect these changes.
The change removes telemetry collection and reporting from the app, server, and Worker. It removes related interfaces, tests, and release checks, and updates privacy disclosures and documentation. The disclosures continue to describe the push token used for alerts.
Telemetry types, settings projection, API helpers, UI, tests, and translations are removed. The About page now renders PluginsGroup in place of telemetry controls.
The server no longer exposes the telemetry endpoint, initializes telemetry, or counts visits through status and socket callbacks. Related server tests are removed.
Remove telemetry Worker and release reporting telemetry/*, scripts/telemetry-*, scripts/release-guards.ts, scripts/release-guards.test.ts
The Worker, its schema and deployment files, and the telemetry report scripts are deleted. Release guards no longer track Worker deployment fingerprints.
The disclosures remove usage analytics and telemetry data declarations. They retain descriptions of the optional push token and its use by the push relay.
Documentation and source scans remove telemetry references. Telemetry-specific test selection and regression checks are removed, and browser QA no longer sets OVIS_TELEMETRY.
devswha/ovis#2082: Its release readiness description uses telemetry Worker and release-guard status, which this change removes.
devswha/ovis#1909: Its release process relies on the Worker deployment-state guard removed here.
devswha/ovis#2274: It changes the telemetry settings snapshot contract that this change deletes.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 22f68
The telemetry removal is broadly clean, but the PWA browser QA script still copies the deleted telemetry folder and will fail CI. Privacy disclosures and the published policy also need correcting, and the external node_modules link should be dropped, before this is merged.

Remove the deleted telemetry folder from the PWA QA copy list.
The PWA QA script copies a telemetry directory that this PR deleted. cpSync throws ENOENT on the missing source, so the scenario fails before it starts. scripts/ci-browser.sh runs this script in the CI browser lane, so that lane fails on every run.

Declare the collected push token.
When alerts are enabled, the app sends its APNs token to the relay, which retains it. The empty array omits that Device ID from the privacy manifest and generated privacy report. Add the Device ID entry for app functionality without tracking. (developer.apple.com)

Turning alerts off does not delete the token from the push relay. The relay deletes an endpoint only after 60 days without use, or when a push service rejects it during a push. The disclosure should state that retention period.

Update the published privacy policy in this PR.
ovis-site/privacy/index.html is the source for ovis.sh. It still says the Ovis server sends anonymous usage counts, that these are on by default, and that users can turn them off under Settings → About → Anonymous usage counts. This PR removes that telemetry and its opt-out. Update the summary at line 42, the settings paragraph at line 56, and the usage-count list item at line 63 in the same release. The localized page ovis-site/ko/privacy/index.html may carry the same text. Its content was not inspected, so check it before release.
