feat(agents): agent install catalog and GET /api/agent-catalog - #2326
PR 1 of 4 for installing agents from Ovis (catalog and detection; no UI yet). Nothing here installs,
updates or signs in.
shared/agent-catalog.ts: every agent Ovis supports (claude, codex, copilot, opencode, devin,
grok, agy, omp, omo, gjc, pi, letta, cmd, muse) plus Hermes as an always-on assistant. Each entry
holds:
its kind and a one-line description;
the vendor's own install command for macOS, Linux and Windows, with the vendor's other official
commands as alternatives, copied from the vendor's current docs (sources: page URL and the date
it was read, 2026-10-29);
what each command needs (Node version, brew, winget, uv, Python, make...), whether it needs
admin, and known issues in plain words;
detection (binaries, version flag, the installer's own folders) and sign-in (the usage-login
provider, the agent's own login, API key variables);
the oldest version an Ovis feature needs, with the feature;
clean-PC runs of each command (COMMAND_TESTS, keyed by platform and the exact command text).
Muse Code has no public install command, so it has none, with the reason.
Supply chain: commandProblems() holds every command to the entry's own HTTPS URL prefixes
(host plus path, so raw.githubusercontent.com/<vendor repo> and never the whole host) and its
own npm/brew/winget/uv/pipx packages, with no sudo. The catalog test fails on any other host,
scheme or package, and on an unused allowlist entry.
GET /api/agent-catalog (server/agent-catalog-routes.ts, server/agent-catalog-detect.ts):
It answers the PC's own platform's commands and, per agent, installed, on_path, version, version_error and meets_min_version.
A binary is looked for on the server's PATH, then on the login shell's PATH (the real entrypoints,
as ShellAgentLocator does for omo and gjc), then in the installer's own folder. Clean-PC runs
showed most installers put the agent in ~/.local/bin, ~/.pi/agent/bin and the like, which is
on PATH only for new terminals, so on_path: false says "installed, open a new terminal".
The version flag runs with no input, a 5 s limit and bounded output; the version is kept until
the executable changes (path, size, mtime). A timeout is retried after a minute. cmd on Windows
is cmd.exe, so it answers installed: null there.
Read only and no-store. A watch device may read it (it is not in the refusal list). It is on
the bridge-token path list, the /local alias and MACHINE_PROXY_PATH, so another PC's catalog
comes through /api/machines/<id>/agent-catalog; a PC from before this answers 404.
The demo answers it from the same catalog (catalogRow() is shared).
docs/agent-catalog.md covers what may go in, how to keep it current, and how to re-run the
clean-PC tests.
For existing users (owner's question): no automatic onboarding. PR 2+ keeps three ways in:
"Add another agent…" in the New workspace / New tab picker, Settings → Agent list with Install
buttons, and Settings → Setup guide to run it again.

Linux: one fresh ubuntu:24.04 container per command (normal user, no Node), node:24-bookworm-slim for npm. macOS: the test Mac with a throwaway HOME. Windows: the Windows VM, elevated, reset afterwards. "not run": Windows runs of Devin, Gajae Code, Hermes and Copilot (winget) hit a test-harness problem (Windows PowerShell started from PowerShell 7 lost Get-FileHash) and are not recorded; brew and pipx alternatives were not run.
Findings that changed the catalog:
Devin's installer installs, then exits 1 when its closing sign-in has no browser.
pi without Node asks in the terminal whether to install it, and stops without a terminal.
Hermes on minimal Linux needs libatomic1.
Letta's npm install on Linux needs Python 3, make and a C++ compiler (node-pty has no Linux
prebuild); uv tool install letta works but lags npm.
Oh My Pi on Windows stops on an older Bun (before 1.4.4), such as one Ovis's own installer put
there.
OmO refuses an elevated shell.
Validation
bun run check fast: typecheck, build, unit 8444 pass / 0 fail.
New tests:
shared/agent-catalog.test.ts: schema, coverage of every supported kind, versions, supply chain,
stale allowlists, stale test records.
server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts: real stub executables for cache, re-read on change,
dedupe, timeout kill and retry, unreadable, below-minimum, not installed, cmd on Windows,
login-shell PATH, installer folder, bounded output.
server/agent-catalog-routes.test.ts: 401 with no credential, 200 with the token, 200 for a
watch device, 403 for its POST, 200 with the bridge token, and the PC-proxy round trip equal to
the direct answer.
Mutation checks:
A look-alike host injected into Grok's Linux command fails the vendor test, naming the command.
Removing the route from MACHINE_PROXY_PATH fails 2 tests.
Removing it from the bridge path list fails 2 tests.
Isolated server (temp HOME and state, stub claude on PATH), curl -i:
no credential: 401;
token: 200, 15 agents, claude installed 2.1.311;
watch device: 200; its POST: 403 read_only;
another PC through the PC proxy with the bridge token: 200, same body.
Adjacent: server/agents-routes.test.ts and server/integrations-routes.test.ts are unchanged and
green.
Every agent Ovis can install, each with the vendor's own install command
per platform (copied from the vendor's current docs, with the page and the
date it was read), what the command needs, how to tell the agent is
installed, how it is signed in to, the oldest version an Ovis feature
needs, and its clean-PC runs.
commandProblems() holds every command to the entry's own HTTPS address
prefixes and packages, with no sudo; the catalog's test fails on any
other host, scheme or package.
…talled
The catalog for this PC's platform, with each agent's installed state and
version. A binary is looked for on the server's PATH, then on the login
shell's (the real entrypoints), then in its installer's own folder, which
a fresh install often adds to PATH only for new terminals; on_path says
which. Its version flag runs with no input and a 5 s limit, and the
version is kept until the executable file changes.
Read only and no-store; a watching device may read it, and the connection
server reaches another PC's through the PC proxy with that PC's bridge
token. The demo answers it from the same catalog.
Claude Code, Codex, Grok and Antigravity install on a clean Windows VM;
pi waits at its Node question without a terminal, Oh My Pi stops on an
older Bun, and OmO refuses an elevated shell. Claude Code's Windows
installer folder is added to its install_dirs.

Catalog contract and vendor data shared/agent-catalog.ts, shared/agent-catalog.test.ts, docs/agent-catalog.md
Defines catalog entries, platform install methods, sources, requirements, detection metadata, and command validation. Adds vendor command test records and tests for catalog shape, version helpers, platform mapping, and command validation. Documents catalog requirements and maintenance.
Locates executables through the service and login-shell PATH or configured install directories. Reads and caches version results with concurrency and output limits. Tests lookup, caching, timeouts, and version states.
Catalog endpoint and transport wiring shared/protocol.ts, server/agent-catalog-routes.ts, server/index.ts, server/machine-api.ts, server/machines.test.ts, server/remote-entry.ts, server/agent-catalog-routes.test.ts, site/demo/fixtures.ts, site/demo/transport.ts, changelog.d/agent-install-catalog.md
Adds the read-only GET /api/agent-catalog response and wires it into server, bridge-authorized, machine-proxy, remote-server, and demo routes. Adds route and proxy tests. Documents the endpoint and notes that installation is not performed by this functionality.
devswha/ovis#1896: Addresses agent discovery when a service has a restricted PATH, which is also covered by this PR’s service-PATH, login-shell-PATH, and install-directory lookup.

…group, fixed command forms
From the merge pass's review of #2326:
- A plain GET ran a binary from the server's working folder when PATH
held ".": detection now looks only in absolute PATH entries, on the
service PATH and the login shell's alike.
- A --version that started a child holding stdout outlived its timeout
(100 ms answered after 3 s), and such children could pin every
detection slot: the flag now runs in a process group of its own, which
is killed whole at the timeout, and its output is no longer read then.
- commandProblems() relied on reading shell syntax, so an appended
"&& touch ..." passed: every command must now be exactly one of a few
fixed forms (curl -fsSL <url> | bash, npm install -g <package>, ...),
matched against the whole text; only the URL or package varies, and it
is held to the entry's own addresses and packages as before.
- pi (macOS, Linux) and Hermes (Linux) may ask for sudo while installing
a missing prerequisite: they are marked admin, and a test keeps every
command whose notes say so marked.
Each change comes with a test that failed before it.
From the merge pass's re-review of #2326:
- The fixed forms still let a URL or package vary: an approved address
with text after it, any npm version, or text after OpenCode's command
passed. APPROVED_COMMANDS now lists every catalog command per platform,
and commandProblems() accepts a command only when it is in that list
exactly; the address and package allowlists stay as a consistency
check. A test changes every catalog command (a suffix, an extra
argument, leading, trailing or doubled whitespace, an npm version) and
each change is refused.
- A version flag that answered and exited at once, leaving a child that
held its output, was read until the timeout: the output is now read for
200 ms after the process exits, then the child's process group is
ended. The timeout tests now also prove the child they started is gone,
for a flag that hangs and for one that exits at once.
APPROVED_COMMANDS stays hand-written so a catalog edit needs a deliberate
approval; this test fails when the catalog holds a command the list does
not approve, or the list keeps one the catalog no longer holds.
The version cache was keyed by path, size and mtime, so a binary renamed
over the old one with the same size and a copied mtime kept the old
version. The fingerprint now adds the device, the inode and the ctime,
read in nanoseconds. A test replaces a stub that way and reads the new
version.
Merging 2b5b38d (onboarding 1 of 4, in 0.4.20 by the owner's decision). An agent install catalog (shared/agent-catalog.ts: 15 agents, their official install commands per platform, detection rules), server-side detection, and GET /api/agent-catalog with its PC proxy route; no UI yet. New endpoint, proxy route and installer commands, so the merge pass reviewed it itself over three rounds. Supply chain: all 38 distinct commands (66 platform methods) verified over the network to the vendors' official sources. Fixed on the way: detection could run an agent binary from the server's working directory when PATH held . (only absolute PATH entries count now); a version probe's timeout did not stop children holding its output (it runs in its own process group, killed at the deadline, verified with a pipe-holding child); the command check accepted altered commands (it now accepts only APPROVED_COMMANDS byte for byte, with a test that every catalog command and no other is approved, and 300 altered variants refused); pi and Hermes marked as needing admin; and (CodeRabbit) the cached version is keyed on the executable's device, inode, size, mtime and ctime, so a binary renamed over it is re-read. Endpoint access (auth, watch reads, the PC proxy's credential forwarding) held on a real server; 112 tests, typecheck clean. Native Windows runtime of the timeout kill (taskkill /T /F) was not run here.
…ab (#2328)
## Change
PR 2 of 4 for installing agents from Ovis, stacked on #2326 (review
against `feat/agent-install-catalog`;
merge #2326 first). It adds the install, re-detect and sign-in flow,
with no entry point yet:
onboarding comes in PR 3, and Settings plus the New workspace / New tab
picker in PR 4.
- **`POST /api/agent-catalog/install`** `{ agent, alternative? }` opens
a terminal tab labelled
"Install <Name>" in the first workspace (or a new one) at the home
folder. It types the agent's
official command for this PC's platform, chosen by the server from the
catalog: the primary command,
or `alternatives[alternative]`. The request never carries a command; a
`command` field in the body
is ignored. The command is checked against the catalog's fixed forms and
vendor allowlist again
right before it is typed. Every line shows in the tab, and Ctrl+C stops
it; nothing runs in the
background. On Windows, a command written for another shell than the
tab's is refused
(`409 shell_mismatch`).
- **`POST /api/agent-catalog/sign-in`** `{ agent }` opens a tab running
the installed agent's own
sign-in command, or the agent itself where it signs in inside. It
answers `409 not_installed` before
the agent is there.
- Both routes are mutations: a watch device gets `403 read_only`, and a
request with no credential gets
401. Another PC's install goes through
`/api/machines/<id>/agent-catalog/(install|sign-in)` with
that PC's bridge token. The demo answers 409.
- **`AgentSetupCard`** shows Install then Sign in on one card, the v2/v3
design the owner approved.
The steps are a pure reducer (`src/lib/agentSetup.ts`).
- While the install runs, the card reads `GET /api/agent-catalog` every
3 s. Installed is decided by
detection, never by the tab's exit: Devin's installer exits 1 after
installing, and others succeed
without the agent on PATH yet.
- Show details shows the exact command, Open terminal shows its tab, and
Cancel leaves the tab as it
is.
- The wording is plain, for beginners: "Installed. New terminal tabs
will find it.", with the PATH
detail only under Show details.
- New strings are translated in ko, ja and zh; "Install" and "Sign in"
move to the base dictionary.
## Screenshots (Codex theme)
Desktop 1280 and phone 390, dark and light, showing five states (not
installed, installing, installed
-> sign in, ready, failed), shared with the owner before this PR was
opened. They are in the lane
report folder (`pr2-shots/`).
## Validation
- `bun run check fast` is green.
- Route tests (`server/agent-catalog-install.test.ts`, herdr calls
spied):
- the typed text equals the catalog's command;
- an alternative is chosen by its index;
- 400 `unknown_agent` and `invalid_alternative`; 409
`no_install_command` and `shell_mismatch`, with
nothing typed;
- the Windows Enter key;
- the sign-in command, and 409 `not_installed`;
- 403 for a watch device, with no tab created;
- an install through the PC proxy.
- State machine and card render tests.
- `server/agent-catalog-routes.test.ts` and
`server/usage-login.contract.test.ts` are unchanged and
green.
- Isolated server, real HTTP with `curl -i` (herdr tab and send calls
stubbed and recorded):
- an install with an attacker's `command` in the body answered 200 and
typed exactly
`curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash`;
- unknown agent 400; sign-in before install 409; a watch device 403; no
credential 401;
- one tab created in total.
Hold until after the 0.4.20 release (merge pass), after #2326.
…d time (#2397)
## Change
Test-only, `server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts`. The two `runVersion`
tests from #2326 checked `performance.now() - started < 2_000`, which
goes against the rule that tests make no wall-clock assertions. Each now
asserts what the run itself returns:
- **A flag that hangs** (a stub that backgrounds `sleep 30` and then
sleeps 30 s), with a 300 ms limit, must come back `[timedOut, exitCode]
= [true, null]`. A null exit code only happens when the time limit wins
the race in `runVersion`. A read that hung on the pipe the child holds
would now fail on the test's own timeout.
- **A flag that prints its version and exits** while a child holds its
output must come back `[false, 0]` with the version. `timedOut` is set
only by the timer, so `false` proves it returned before its limit. That
limit is now 3 s, under the test's 5 s, so a regression fails on this
assertion and not on the test timeout. With `runVersion`'s after-exit
read stop removed, this test fails with `timedOut: true`; I checked that
by changing the code.
Both tests still check that the child they started is gone. That check
uses the existing `ends()` helper: a bounded wait for the condition, not
a time assertion.
## Validation
- `bun test server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts`: 18 pass, 1
Windows-only skip, three runs in a row.
- `bun test scripts/conventions.test.ts` passes.
- `bun run check fast` is green.
- An omo code review approved it. Its one LOW point (the 5 s limit was
the same as the test timeout) is applied.
Onboarding PR 3 of 4: the first-run setup guide.
**It needed #2326 and #2328 first; both are merged**, and `main` is
merged in. The diff against `main` is this PR's own change: client code,
DESIGN.md and a changelog fragment. Nothing in `server/` or `shared/`
changes, and no route or contract is added. Settings → Phone's "Pair
this device now" now goes through the shared `src/lib/pairing.ts` (same
steps, same messages). PR 4 (#2330, Settings → Setup guide) adds the
same `src/lib/setupGuide.ts` byte for byte, so the two merge cleanly.
## What it does
On a fresh install Ovis asks **"Is this your first time using Ovis?"**
- **I've used Ovis before** goes straight to the app, and the guide
never opens by itself again.
- **I'm new** opens one screen. There is no progress bar and there are
no steps; **Skip setup** is always there.
- First Ovis **checks this PC** (`GET /api/agent-catalog`). Every coding
agent shows a spinner until its answer comes back. A check that answers
in under 300 ms stays on screen until 300 ms; a slower one adds no wait.
- Then **every coding agent appears as a compact two-column tile, the
same screen whatever the PC has.** The order is Claude Code, Codex, the
others installed, then the rest.
- An installed agent is picked with a tap (version and check). Claude
Code is preselected, else Codex, else the first.
- **Start with <agent>** opens the first workspace with it, in the
folder this browser used last or else the server's home. If that folder
is gone (`invalid_cwd`), it opens the home instead.
- A missing agent is dim, with a small **Install** (a download icon on
phones). **Nothing is installed without the user's tap: tapping Install
is the consent.** That one tap runs the agent's official installer in a
terminal tab, and a spinner turns on the tile until the catalog lists
the agent. Tapping the spinner shows the tab. The tile then becomes an
installed one and is picked.
- Several installs can run at once, and Start does not wait for them. An
install that never shows up stops after ten minutes and offers Try
again.
- **The guide has no sign-in step.** The agent asks for its own sign-in
when it first starts. An in-browser sign-in UI is planned as the next PR
(the owner's call; it needs a server contract).
- Plan usage turns on by itself for accounts already signed in (`GET
/api/usage`).
- **Connect your phone**, beside Start, shows a QR code that opens the
app on the phone with a fresh pairing code filled in, plus the address
and the code (the existing `POST /api/devices/pair/start`). "Paired: …"
confirms a phone that used the code.
- The code is requested only on the user's action (opening the box, or
New code) and is never renewed in the background.
- **On a fresh install this browser is in only because nothing is paired
yet** (open access), and a paired phone turns the app's sign-in on. So
the tap first pairs this browser, exactly as Settings → Phone's "Pair
this device now" does, then shows the QR. A line says "This browser is
paired first: other browsers now need pairing too." That tap is the
user's consent (the owner's decision).
- The self-pairing is one shared operation (`src/lib/pairing.ts`), used
by both the guide and Settings → Phone. One runs at a time in a page,
because two at once could leave a void cookie in place of the good one.
None runs for a browser the server already lists as paired. After it,
the app reads its access again.
- Settings → Phone takes over only when the page has no phone-reachable
address (loopback), or the server does not say how this browser got in.
- A failed check shows "Couldn't check this PC" with the error and Look
again.
"Fresh install" means all of the following:
- herdr has no workspace on this PC;
- this browser saved no settings;
- the server holds no shared settings (revision 0);
- no device is paired;
- this device is not a watching one. A watching device never sees the
guide.
A failed read of any of these decides nothing. When the guide is closed
in one tab, it closes in the others too.
A Start that finishes after the user moved to another pane, or closed
the guide, does not take them there. A pane picked with the keys or the
palette now sets the guide aside, as a pick from the sidebar already
did.
Known limits, not changed here: two tabs of the same browser pairing
themselves at the same instant can still race (`main` has the same gap
between two Settings tabs). The server keeps a single pending pairing
code. Two views asking for one (the guide's box and Settings → Phone, or
two Settings tabs on `main` today) can replace each other's code.
The design follows the Claude and Codex apps' first runs: one screen in
the main area, with the sidebar left in place. DESIGN.md has a "Setup
guide" entry, and the ko/ja/zh strings are in `src/lib/i18n/guide.*.ts`.
`AgentSetupCard`'s logic moved unchanged into
`src/lib/useAgentSetup.ts`; the card uses it, and so do the guide's
tiles.
## Verification
- **Tests that failed first, against missing exports or the old
behaviour, and pass now:**
- `setupGuideFlow.test.ts`: the fresh-install predicate, the welcome →
setup state, saved records, the check's lines and settle time,
`agentRows`, `installedHere`, `preferredAgent`, `signedInAgents`,
`tileState` (including install, stuck, retry and a stale request),
`openInFolder` and `readSignedIn`.
- `pairing.test.ts` (single flight; no new pairing for a listed
browser), `phoneBoxMode` in `setupGuideFlow.test.ts`, and
`useAgentSetup.hook.test.ts` (no tile callback after unmount).
- `useSetupGuide.hook.test.ts`: cross-tab closes, `finish` keeping the
user's pane (in the same update too), and terminal-tab tickets voided by
Start, a close or a reopen.
- `useSelectPane.hook.test.ts` and `useSignedInUsage.hook.test.ts`.
- `bun run check fast` is green on the head.
- **Browser walks** ran on isolated servers (fresh `OVIS_STATE_DIR`,
their own herdr sessions, loopback). Two isolated servers. **This PC's
14 agents:** the welcome shows by itself, then the check, then "You're
set up" with Claude Code picked; Connect your phone opens Settings on
loopback; picking Codex changes Start; Start opens the first workspace;
plan usage is on; the guide is recorded closed and stays closed on
reload. **An empty HOME:** all 14 agents show as tiles; nothing installs
before the tap; one tap on Claude Code's Install turns the spinner;
**the real official installer** finishes in 27 s, and the tile becomes
"Claude Code 2.1.312", picked; "You're set up"; Start opens the
workspace. **A forced 500:** "Couldn't check this PC". Screenshots: both
screens at 1280/390, dark and light.
- **Reviews** (owner-requested reworks V4 → V6), from
omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex (Sol 6.1, then Terra 6.1 from round 3
on, per the owner):
- Every HIGH and MEDIUM raised over the rounds is fixed. They covered
install races, focus, per-tile errors, stale replies, pairing-code
lifecycles and Start vs pane picks.
- The review bench's #9 (a late Start overriding a newer pane pick) is
fixed and tested.
- omo approves, and Terra's last round has no HIGH or MEDIUM within
scope.

Change
PR 1 of 4 for installing agents from Ovis (catalog and detection; no UI yet). Nothing here installs,
updates or signs in.
shared/agent-catalog.ts: every agent Ovis supports (claude, codex, copilot, opencode, devin,grok, agy, omp, omo, gjc, pi, letta, cmd, muse) plus Hermes as an always-on assistant. Each entry
holds:
commands as alternatives, copied from the vendor's current docs (
sources: page URL and the dateit was read, 2026-10-29);
admin, and known issues in plain words;
provider, the agent's own login, API key variables);
COMMAND_TESTS, keyed by platform and the exact command text).commandProblems()holds every command to the entry's own HTTPS URL prefixes(host plus path, so
raw.githubusercontent.com/<vendor repo>and never the whole host) and itsown npm/brew/winget/uv/pipx packages, with no
sudo. The catalog test fails on any other host,scheme or package, and on an unused allowlist entry.
GET /api/agent-catalog(server/agent-catalog-routes.ts,server/agent-catalog-detect.ts):installed,on_path,version,version_errorandmeets_min_version.as
ShellAgentLocatordoes for omo and gjc), then in the installer's own folder. Clean-PC runsshowed most installers put the agent in
~/.local/bin,~/.pi/agent/binand the like, which ison PATH only for new terminals, so
on_path: falsesays "installed, open a new terminal".the executable changes (path, size, mtime). A timeout is retried after a minute.
cmdon Windowsis
cmd.exe, so it answersinstalled: nullthere.no-store. A watch device may read it (it is not in the refusal list). It is onthe bridge-token path list, the
/localalias andMACHINE_PROXY_PATH, so another PC's catalogcomes through
/api/machines/<id>/agent-catalog; a PC from before this answers 404.catalogRow()is shared).docs/agent-catalog.mdcovers what may go in, how to keep it current, and how to re-run theclean-PC tests.
For existing users (owner's question): no automatic onboarding. PR 2+ keeps three ways in:
"Add another agent…" in the New workspace / New tab picker, Settings → Agent list with Install
buttons, and Settings → Setup guide to run it again.
Clean-PC runs (2026-10-29)
Linux: one fresh
ubuntu:24.04container per command (normal user, no Node),node:24-bookworm-slimfor npm. macOS: the test Mac with a throwaway HOME. Windows: the Windows VM, elevated, reset afterwards. "not run": Windows runs of Devin, Gajae Code, Hermes and Copilot (winget) hit a test-harness problem (Windows PowerShell started from PowerShell 7 lostGet-FileHash) and are not recorded; brew and pipx alternatives were not run.Findings that changed the catalog:
libatomic1.prebuild);
uv tool install lettaworks but lags npm.there.
Validation
bun run check fast: typecheck, build, unit 8444 pass / 0 fail.shared/agent-catalog.test.ts: schema, coverage of every supported kind, versions, supply chain,stale allowlists, stale test records.
server/agent-catalog-detect.test.ts: real stub executables for cache, re-read on change,dedupe, timeout kill and retry, unreadable, below-minimum, not installed,
cmdon Windows,login-shell PATH, installer folder, bounded output.
server/agent-catalog-routes.test.ts: 401 with no credential, 200 with the token, 200 for awatch device, 403 for its POST, 200 with the bridge token, and the PC-proxy round trip equal to
the direct answer.
MACHINE_PROXY_PATHfails 2 tests.claudeon PATH),curl -i:read_only;server/agents-routes.test.tsandserver/integrations-routes.test.tsare unchanged andgreen.
Hold until after the 0.4.20 release (merge pass).
