A comma inside a password was treated as a second URL, so the tail reached startup logs. Single-slash schemes and fragment secrets were left in the clear as well.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winFix the shared URL splitter for a completed root URL followed by a slashless URL.
For
https://a.example,https:user:pass@b.example,splitCommaSeparatedUrlskeeps the comma becauseprefix.restisa.example, whileuserinfoAtFollowsfinds@in the following text. BothGITLAB_API_URLSandGitLabClientPoolthen receive one merged value. Normalization appends/api/v4to that value, so thea.exampleendpoint is not initialized as a separate endpoint and the merged URL routes incorrectly.Update
splitCommaSeparatedUrlsso this comma separates two URL entries. Keep the correction in the shared splitter because both initialization paths use it. Add a regression test for this exact input.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

splitCommaSeparatedUrls kept the comma in "https://a.example,https:user:pass@b.example" because the "@" of the next slashless URL looked like part of the first URL's userinfo, so GITLAB_API_URLS and GitLabClientPool got one merged entry. A comma followed by an http(s) scheme now always starts a new entry. Commas inside userinfo ("https://user:pass,word@host") are still kept.

splitCommaSeparatedUrls split "https://alice:supersecret,https:word@host" at the comma because any comma followed by an http(s) scheme started a new entry. The first piece is not a valid URL, so the startup check logged "GITLAB_API_URL contains an invalid URL: https://alice:supersecret". A comma followed by an http(s) scheme now starts a new entry only when the text before it parses as a URL by itself. "https://a.example,https:user:pass@b.example" still splits into two entries.

Do not use password presence to disambiguate URL-list commas
https:word@host is a valid username-only URL. The proposed isUnambiguousNextHttpUrl would see an empty password, treat the comma as userinfo, and merge https://a.example with the second list entry.
The same boundary is valid password text in https://alice:123,https:word@host. URL parsing cannot distinguish these inputs. The current code can select https://alice:123 as the default endpoint and log 123 as a port.
Do not add a heuristic that silently chooses either interpretation. Reject this ambiguous raw form with a redacted configuration error, and require %2C for password commas or an explicit unambiguous URL-list entry. This is the only safe correction that avoids both merging supported list entries and misrouting the password case.

Thanks. We're keeping the current behavior in this PR on purpose. Rejecting ambiguous comma lists at startup would change how existing configurations start, which is a breaking change for v2. This PR fixes the common comma-in-password leak without changing startup behavior, and the CHANGELOG entry now names the remaining ambiguous case and recommends %2C for commas in passwords. Strict validation is tracked for v3 in #876.

@zereight Thanks for clarifying the compatibility requirement. Rejecting ambiguous comma lists would change v2 startup behavior, so I accept deferring strict validation to v3 in #876.
The remaining ambiguity is a known limitation. Documenting it and recommending %2C makes that limitation explicit.

Non-blocking notes:
The latest CodeRabbit suggestion (reject ambiguous raw lists with a config error) changes startup behavior for some configs, so it's held for a maintainer decision rather than fixed here. The branch also needs a CHANGELOG.md conflict resolved against main before CI can run. |

Why
Startup logs still print a few rare GitLab API URL shapes in the clear after #823. A password that contains a comma is split into two strings before redaction, so the tail is logged.
https:/user:pass@hostand fragment parameters such as#private_token=and#access_token=are also left as written. What changed
splitCommaSeparatedUrlskeeps a comma that sits inside userinfo, and the threeGITLAB_API_URLlist parsers use it.redactUrlSecretsInTextredacts userinfo forhttps:,https:/, andhttps://, including when that URL sits in a sentence.Scope
This covers the four cases in #826. A normal
https://user:pass@hostinside a sentence was already redacted, and this adds a regression test for that path. Commas in a query string still separate list entries, as they did before.GITLAB_ALLOWED_HOSTSis unchanged.Tradeoffs
Redacting the chopped tail after
.split(",")would hide one log line and still hand the client a broken URL. Parsing the list before redaction keepspass, wordin one URL, so the logger has a single value to redact.Blast Radius
Operators who put a comma in a GitLab password, or who log a one-slash URL or a fragment token, no longer see that secret at startup. A normal list, including
host:443next to another URL, still splits on the comma. No config key was renamed.Verification
npm run buildpassed.node --import tsx/esm --test test/utils/redact-url.test.tspassed, 40 tests.node --import tsx/esm --test test/startup-url-redaction.test.tspassed, 8 tests, including a password ofpass,word.main(634e380):npx tsc --noEmitandnpm run lintpassed with no errors, andnpm run test:mockpassed with 1796 tests and 0 failures. Before the fix,
redactUrlSecretsInText("https:/user:pass@host")returned that string unchanged, and"https://user:pass,word@host".split(",")producedhttps://user:passandword@host.Follow-up to #826 and #823.
