Change

Closes #1702.

I took the liberty of starting the work before a maintainer's yes on #1702, so the approach can be judged on running code. If the direction or the scope is not wanted, say so and I will reshape or close this PR.

Muse Code panes had no Chat: herdr labels them muse but reports no session for them, so Chat showed "Conversation unavailable". This adds a reader for Muse's session log through the existing conversation API, transcript pager and Chat view. Reading makes no model call and needs no Muse configuration.

Binding. Muse writes .session.lock (pid=<pid>, and host=<host> on recent builds) into every session directory it opens, and never removes it. server/muse-store.ts takes the pane's Muse foreground processes (muse or a versioned muse-bin-…), then the top-level locks that name one of their pids (and this host, when a lock names one) and were written since the process started. Sessions whose log ends with session.end, which Muse writes when the TUI switches to another session, are dropped, as is a lock whose log does not exist yet. A resumed session writes session.resumed as it switches, so an in-TUI /resume is followed at once. A scan must leave exactly one, or Chat stays on Terminal. Every lookup scans again, so two live sessions always leave none, and a scan that binds nothing is not repeated for 2 s. Only the first 1 KiB of a lock is read, and a store of more than 4096 sessions, or a folder in it with more entries, is not read. Folder, recency and argv never choose, so panes in one folder each show their own session.

Reading. server/muse.ts reads prompts (runtime.user_intent.accepted), answers (Muse's commentary phase folds into the work block), reasoning summaries, tool calls and their results (JSON output / exit_code envelopes, tool denied: / tool failed: as failed), compaction summaries and the model. Show all reads a long result from the log. A prompt of pictures alone shows Muse's own [Image #n] names. Every whole line is parsed. Chat uses Terminal when the log is missing or unreadable, or when a whole line does not parse, names a record, session kind or run event that Muse 1.4.2 to 1.4.13 does not write (the sets come from 160 real session logs), names another session than the log's folder, or is a record the reader takes in another shape (prompt block, tool call, result, compaction). A log that grew while the last 16 MiB it held before changed starts a new history.

Out of scope for this PR, each for a later one if wanted: prompt cards, slash commands, todos and plan, subagents, images, Earlier sessions, /rewind handling. Limits are in docs/muse-chat.md.

The choice of transcript records and the result-envelope reading are adapted from Collie's bridge/journal/muse.ts (MIT, Copyright (c) 2026 Altan Sarisin), credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md. The lock binding is new.

Validation

On macOS arm64, Bun 1.4.2, herdr 0.9.0, Muse Code 1.4.13:

  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/muse.test.ts: 21 pass. The reader runs against a session recorded from real Muse 1.4.13 (server/fixtures/muse/recorded-1.4.13.jsonl: records as Muse wrote them, paths and Muse's own prompt text replaced, see its README), with three prompts, a failed command, a declined call, a /model switch and the session end. A fictional fixture in the 1.4.12 shapes covers a compaction and a long output. Also: refused lines (renamed records, run events and session kinds, a malformed line, unknown prompt blocks, bad compactions, another session's records), a rewrite that also grew, a prompt of pictures alone, paging and append-versus-cold equivalence, whole output, and lock binding (pid reuse, other host, host name forms, ended session, lock without a log, two live sessions before and after a binding, a failed scan held for 2 s, a long lock, a store and a folder past 4096 entries, nested subagent locks, hostless locks, one process lookup per resolve). Each check fails its test when it is taken out (12 mutations).
  • bun run check run bun test --timeout 20000 -t "Muse conversation API" ./server/api.contract.test.ts: pass. A stand-in named muse runs in an isolated herdr: a lock naming another pid binds nothing; the recorded 1.4.13 session's turns, model, ETag and a tool output come over HTTP; a switch to a second session changes history_id and retires the old output ref; a renamed record and an unreadable log answer scrollback (Terminal).
  • bun run check fast: generated types, themes, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 12 fail in 9 files, and the same 12 fail on unchanged main on this headless Mac when each file runs alone: scripts/check, scripts/ci-browser (4), scripts/install-star, scripts/self-hosted-runner, server/claude-store, server/session-history, server/remote-entry, server/agy and server/core/composer-framing. server/shell-agent and server/portal failed once under load and pass alone on both.
  • Live, on an earlier commit of this PR, with real Muse 1.4.13 in an isolated herdr and a temporary data directory: Chat bound a fresh pane 0.6 s after launch, and followed /fork (a new tab with its own session), /new and an in-TUI /resume. A real model run showed commentary, a bash call with its output, the final answer and the model.
  • Real data, read-only and not committed: the strict reader of a8c34bd reads all 160 Muse 1.4.x session logs on this Mac without a refusal (2,538 turns). A 16 MiB page of the largest (194 MB) parses in about 16 ms. In the first round, each of the 7 Muse panes running here bound to its own session.

Not tested: Linux with real Muse, and Windows natively (Windows uses Terminal by design).

Before opening, a code-review agent (Claude Code /code-review, medium) read main...HEAD. It found no blocking defect and listed nine candidates. How each was resolved:

# Finding Resolution
1 After an in-TUI /resume, the resumed log may still end with its earlier session.end, so no session binds Not a defect: in real logs Muse writes session.opened.observed and session.resumed in the same second as the switch, so the resumed log no longer ends with session.end. The docs now say so, and a unit test covers it.
2 Tool-output refs are cached immutable, but call ids may repeat across sessions Kept: Muse call ids are time-ordered and unique (call_01a166c8…). A forked session copies the same result with its id, so a cached answer stays correct.
3 processStartedAt blocks the event loop with spawnSync(ps) on every resolve Fixed: uses processStartUpperBoundAsync, with the start margin raised to 3 s for its extra second.
4 Every resolve stats the lock of every session in the store Kept, with a ponytail: note naming the ceiling. Measured at 2–3 ms per lookup, ps included, on a store of 154 sessions.
5 A lock whose session.jsonl does not exist yet counts as live Fixed: museSessionLive needs the log; test added.
6 An orphan subagent_read_result unwraps differently on the page and in Show all; an empty call id gives an unusable output_ref Fixed: the summary unwrap is removed, so both read the same, and a result without an id gets no ref; test added.
7 resolveMuseSession re-checks pane.agent, while its caller routes on resolveAgent Fixed: the guard is removed; the caller decides.
8 An exact host-name match fails between mini and mini.local Fixed: compared by first label, ignoring case; test added.
9 An eighth positional store argument is threaded through the readers Kept: it follows the existing grokHome pattern. Moving every store to one PaneStores object touches every agent and belongs in its own PR.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Chat can display Muse Code prompts, responses, reasoning, tool activity, and model information in the existing Chat view.
    • Chat matches panes to an unambiguous active Muse session; when no unique session is available, it falls back to Terminal.
    • Muse session logs appear without requiring Muse configuration or making a model call.
    • When a pane switches to a different Muse session, Chat updates to show that session’s conversation and tool outputs.
  • Documentation

    • Added a Muse Code guide covering supported platforms, session matching, Chat behavior, and feature limitations.

Muse Code session logs can now provide conversation content through the existing API. The server binds panes to unique live sessions, parses transcript records and tool results, and exposes model metadata. Tests, documentation, and a changelog entry cover the addition.

Explanation

[#1702] Binding, in server/muse-store.ts: resolveMuseSession takes the pane's foreground processes named muse or muse-bin-*, with start-time bounds. heldLog requires a lock written at or after process start (slack 3000 ms on macOS, 20 ms elsewhere), a lock pid matching an owner, a lock host matching this host by first label when the lock names one, and a log whose last complete record is not session.end. A missing log does not bind. museSessionFor returns a log only when the store scan finds exactly one held session. More than 4096 session directories, or no or several matches, returns null (Terminal). Reading, in server/muse.ts: prompts (runtime.user_intent.accepted), assistant text with commentary phase, reasoning summaries, tool calls, tool results by tool_call_id with error state (tool denied:/tool failed: prefixes, nonzero exit_code), compaction summaries (context_compaction_installed), model label (museModel), and whole tool output by id (museToolOutput). Integration: conversation.ts, conversation-metadata.ts, transcript-turns.ts, pane-routes.ts, and conversation-monitor.ts route Muse panes through the existing conversation, paging, metadata, and tool-output paths. server/muse.test.ts and the Muse case in server/api.contract.test.ts cover these paths. I did not run the tests; their results are author-reported. Two narrow deviations from the issue wording: (1) Once a pid is bound, the kept session is returned without a rescan while its own lock and log end remain valid. If a second live session later names the same pid, Chat stays on the kept session instead of Terminal. This needs two live sessions under one Muse process. The issue describes Muse ending the old log on switch (session.end), so this path is not shown to occur. (2) On macOS the start check admits locks written up to 3 s before the reported process start. The issue says at or after start. The slack covers ps time granularity. A reused pid could match a lock written inside that window. Neither deviation is a demonstrated failure. Deferred items (prompt cards, send verification, Earlier sessions, command catalog, todos and plan, subagents, images) are not required here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed paths support Muse session-log reading and binding: server/muse.ts, server/muse-store.ts, their tests, the Muse fixture and README, docs/muse-chat.md, the docs/guide.md Supported agents row, changelog.d/muse-chat.md, and the THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md Collie attribution. The museData option is passed through createServer, createTerminalRegistry, ConversationMonitor, PaneStores, and the paneTranscript, paneConversation, and toolOutput signatures, so the Muse store path reaches the readers. The muse-transcript value added to shared/protocol.ts ConversationResponse.source is part of the same feature. The one-line union change in server/conversation-shared.ts (grok-transcript) is type-only. The base diff for that file was unavailable, so I could not confirm whether the literal is new in this PR. It does not change runtime behavior of Muse or Grok, and no unrelated behavior change is shown. The PR does not implement the deferred prompt cards, slash commands, todos or plan, subagents, images, Earlier sessions, or /rewind handling. Other additions (4096-session cap, 2 s miss cache, 64 KiB tail window) serve the binding and are documented in docs/muse-chat.md.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation. The Change section states the problem (Muse Code panes show "Conversation unavailable" in Chat), links issue #1702, and explains the binding, reading, and exclusions. The Validation section lists the unit, contract, fast-check, and live and real-data runs, plus untested platforms. The only gap is that the PR links the issue without saying a maintainer agreed to the feature. The author states this openly and asks for review first. The description also cites the fixture and docs paths it relies on.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 70.97% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 31 functions across 13 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Normalize an empty call.args string to "{}".

When Muse records a zero-argument call with args: "", input becomes "". The args value is a complete JSON-object string, so the empty string is the finished value. Other parsers produce "{}" for a call with no arguments, for example JSON.stringify(input, null, 2) in the Claude parser. The chat client may then fail to parse or render an empty input. Map an empty or whitespace-only string to "{}". Muse may never write an empty args, so check one real zero-argument call.

Proposed fix
-        const input = typeof call.args === "string" ? call.args : JSON.stringify(call.args ?? {});
+        const input = typeof call.args === "string" ? (call.args.trim() === "" ? "{}" : call.args) : JSON.stringify(call.args ?? {});

Based on learnings: for tool-call transcripts with complete JSON-object-string arguments, zero-argument calls should use "{}", not an empty string.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Bind the lock check and the lock read to one descriptor.

statSync(lock) checks mtimeMs. readFileSync(lock, "utf8") then reopens the same path by name. If Muse rewrites the lock between the two calls, the age check applies to one file and the pid and host come from another. Open the lock once, then use fstatSync and readFileSync on that descriptor. The race window is small, so the impact is low.

Proposed fix
-          try {
-            if (statSync(lock).mtimeMs < startedAt - START_SLACK_MS) continue;
-            const owner = parseMuseLock(readFileSync(lock, "utf8"));
-            if (owner === null || owner.pid !== pid || (owner.host !== null && !sameHost(owner.host, host))) continue;
-          } catch { continue; }
+          let fd: number | undefined;
+          try {
+            fd = openSync(lock, "r");
+            if (fstatSync(fd).mtimeMs < startedAt - START_SLACK_MS) continue;
+            const owner = parseMuseLock(readFileSync(fd, "utf8"));
+            if (owner === null || owner.pid !== pid || (owner.host !== null && !sameHost(owner.host, host))) continue;
+          } catch { continue; } finally { if (fd !== undefined) closeSync(fd); }

statSync is then unused in this file. Remove it from the node:fs import.

Based on learnings: flag Node.js code that uses stat before reopening the checked path by name, unless checks and I/O are bound to one descriptor.

#1711)

A type-only slice of phase 2 (plan `.omo/plans/feature-slices-plan.md`,
section 7, item 9), after CLIProxy (#1699), Portal (#1700), directories
(#1701), terminal find (#1703), web push (#1707), usage (#1708) and
repository diff (#1710); session history (item 7) waits while the open
PR #1598 rewrites those types: the access and device types move out of
`shared/protocol.ts` into `shared/access.ts`. Their routes were already
split out (`server/access.ts`, `server/devices.ts` and
`server/tailscale.ts`), so only the contract types were left in
`protocol.ts`.

## What changes

- **Moved:** `AccessVia`, `AccessRefusal`, `DeviceRole`, `HealthAuth`,
`LanExposure`, `PairedDevice`, `PairingCode`, `RemoteAccess`,
`TailscaleAccess`, verbatim with their doc comments, into the new
`shared/access.ts`. The file holds types only, with no values.
- **Stays in `protocol.ts`:** `export type { AccessVia, AccessRefusal,
DeviceRole, HealthAuth, LanExposure, PairedDevice, PairingCode,
RemoteAccess, TailscaleAccess } from "./access.ts";` at the old place,
so every importer compiles unchanged, including `shared/machines.ts`,
which imports `HealthAuth` from `protocol.ts` (the plan's check for this
family).
- **No other `protocol.ts` declaration uses these names**, so nothing
else had to stay behind.

There is no behaviour to pin: types are erased at runtime, and the
routes and their tests are untouched.

- These routes are covered by contract tests against an isolated live

…s into their own file (#1713)

The last type-only slice of phase 2 that can go now (plan
`.omo/plans/feature-slices-plan.md`, section 7, item 11). It follows:
- CLIProxy (#1699)
- Portal (#1700)
- directories (#1701)
- terminal find (#1703)
- web push (#1707)
- usage (#1708)
- repository diff (#1710)
- access (#1711)
- pane layout (#1712)

This slice moves the workspace, tab and worktree lifecycle types out of
`shared/protocol.ts` into `shared/workspace-lifecycle.ts`. Their routes
were already split out (`server/workspace-routes.ts`). Session history
(item 7) waits while the open PR #1598 rewrites those types.

## What changes

- **Moved, verbatim with their doc comments,** into the new
`shared/workspace-lifecycle.ts`:
  - `WorkspaceMoved`;
- `CreateWorkspaceRequest`, `CreateTabRequest`, `CreateWorktreeRequest`;
  - `MoveTabRequest`, `TabMoved`;
  - `OpenWorktreeRequest`, `WorktreeOpened`;
  - `RemoveWorktreeRequest`, `WorktreeRemoved`;
  - `WorktreeEntry`, `WorktreeListing`;
  - `WorkspaceCreated`, `TabCreated`.

  The file holds types only, with no values.
- **One import in the new file:** `TabMoved` uses `HerdrTab`, which
`protocol.ts` defines as an alias of the generated `TabInfo`. The new
file imports `TabInfo as HerdrTab` from `./herdr-api.generated.ts`, so
the moved lines stay unchanged. It does not import back from
`protocol.ts`.
- **Three places in `protocol.ts`:** the types sat in three places
there. `WorkspaceMoved` sat by the snapshot types, and the others sat in
two blocks on either side of `AgentRenameRequest`.
- `AgentRenameRequest` stays, because it belongs to the agent rename
route, not to this family.
- `WorkspaceMoved`'s old place keeps `export type { WorkspaceMoved }
from "./workspace-lifecycle.ts";`.
- The first block's old place keeps one `export type { … } from
"./workspace-lifecycle.ts";` for the other thirteen names.

  Every importer compiles unchanged.
- **No other `protocol.ts` declaration uses these names,** so nothing
else had to stay behind.

There is no behaviour to pin: types are erased at runtime, and the
routes and their tests are untouched.

## Checks

- **`--color-moved`:** `git diff --color-moved=plain origin/main...HEAD
-- shared` shows 252 lines as moved. The other lines are the two
re-export lines in `protocol.ts` and the `TabInfo as HerdrTab` type
import at the top of the new file.
- **Client imports:** `bun run typecheck` passes on both tsconfigs. No
file in `src/` or `site/` imports `shared/workspace-lifecycle.ts`.
- `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test server/order-sequence.test.ts
scripts/demo-tabs.test.ts scripts/demo-first-message.test.ts
src/lib/workspaceOrder.test.ts`: **42 pass, 0 fail**. The routes

Thanks, this is a careful reader. It follows the Grok/Agy layout (muse.ts reads the log, muse-store.ts binds the session), the pid / start-time / host binding is sound, and Windows correctly falls back to Terminal. One fix before merge, and one strongly suggested:

  1. Bound the session lookup (server/muse-store.ts, museSessionFor). Every resolve synchronously reads every day folder and stats every .session.lock. Resolve runs every 2-5 s per watched pane from the monitor, plus on every conversation and tool-output GET. With 1,000 sessions that measured about 12 ms per resolve, and about 58 ms with 5,000, on the event loop that carries the terminal streams. Please cache the binding per (pid, process start) and recheck only that lock and its log end on each resolve. Rescan only when that check fails, which a /resume switch causes because the old log ends with session.end. Also cap the scan as grok-store.ts does (MAX_GROUPS).
  2. Tag the final answer. Muse writes a run-completed record (kind: "terminal", terminal: "completed"). The parser ignores it, so no answer gets final_answer, and Chat never marks a finished Muse turn as seen. Grok does the same thing in grok.ts. Please tag the last non-commentary text part when that record arrives.

Nits: if the muse launcher stays alive as the parent of muse-bin-…, the pane has two Muse processes and always falls back to Terminal. Consider requiring exactly one bound session across the candidates instead. Also move the ponytail: notes into their doc comments, as elsewhere in the repo.

Note: this is a feature PR opened ahead of a maintainer's yes on #1702, so it still waits on that decision. Expect a small rebase too, since shared/protocol.ts is being split into per-area files.

Last pass over the Ovis rebrand leftovers. `git grep -I -i -n -E
"herdr[- ]?web"` still finds 1404 hits on main (1094 in CHANGELOG.md,
310 elsewhere). I audited each one. Only one could be fixed in a PR:

- `docs/app-updates.md`: "herdr-web-ui is MIT" -> "Ovis is MIT".

What the rest are:

- **Kept on purpose:** links to the old repo and notes in CHANGELOG.md /
release-summaries.json, herdrweb.dev installer/demo forwarding, legacy
plugin id / state dir / localStorage / cache migrations and their tests,
the remote bridge registry and runtime paths
(`~/.config/herdr-web-ui/bridges`, `%LOCALAPPDATA%\herdr-web-ui`, a
cross-version contract), deployed telemetry Worker/D1 names, ovis-site's
deliberate "formerly herdr web UI" and quoted testimonials, and fixtures
captured verbatim.
- **Left for the maintainer, user-facing but blocked:**
  - `CHANGELOG.md:3` intro: CHANGELOG.md is not edited in PRs.
- `telemetry/worker.ts:2` doc comment: any change fails
`scripts/telemetry-deployed.test.ts` until the Worker is redeployed.
- `docs/guide.md:56` stale Node path: touched by open PRs #1706, #1652,
#1650, #1647, #1542 and #1442.
- `server/api.contract.test.ts:36` stale comment: touched by open PRs
#1706, #1598 and #1427.
- **Unclear:** `AGENTS.md` names the real `herdr-web-main.service` unit
and `~/.herdr/worktrees/herdr-web-ui*` dirs, which still exist under
those names. There are also internal names: the
`/herdr-web-ui/demo/app/` test subpath in about 37 regression scripts,
the film artifact names, install.ps1's `HerdrWebUi.GhJob` type, and test
fixture strings.

No behaviour change, so no changelog fragment. `bun run check fast`
passes: typecheck, build, and 6161 unit tests pass with 0 failures.

The last type-only slice of phase 2 (plan

`SessionResumeRequest` and `SessionResumeResponse` beside the history
types. The session history types move out of `shared/protocol.ts` into
`shared/session-history.ts`. Their routes were already split out
(`server/session-history-routes.ts`), so only the contract types were
left in `protocol.ts`.

## What changes

## Outside PRs that touch the same files

No other maintainer PR touches these files. Outside contributors' PRs
that touch `shared/protocol.ts`: #1714, #1706, #1652, #1442 and #1427.
- None of them changes the moved types, so none needs code changes, at
most a rebase.
- I tested each against this branch with `git merge-tree`:
  - #1714, #1706 and #1652 still merge cleanly in `shared/`.
- #1442 and #1427 already conflict with main in `shared/protocol.ts`.
This move adds no new conflict there.
- Their imports from `protocol.ts` keep resolving through the re-export.

…le (#1760)

Wave C1 of the per-agent module split. The plan is
`.omo/plans/agent-modules-split.md` in the maintainer's workspace, and
plan-reviewer approved it. It follows P1a (#1755).

This wave moves the Claude transcript parser out of
`server/conversation.ts` into a new leaf module,
`server/claude-transcript.ts`. `conversation.ts` keeps:
- every cache and both `forget*` functions;
- the paging core and the transcript resolvers;
- the three functions tests spy on (`paneTranscript`,
`readCommandTranscript`, `paneProcessRoots`).

It re-exports the parser's public names, so no importer changes.

## What changes

- **Moved verbatim, with their doc comments:** about 420 lines. That
covers `isCommandEntry` through `parseClaudeTranscript`:
- the local-command and notice helpers, `stripTerminalControls` and
`unwrapPastes`;
  - `TranscriptEntry`, `claudeResultText`, `IMAGE_TYPES`;
- the parser state, `createClaudeTranscriptParser`,
`claudeTranscriptParser` and `parseClaudeTranscript`.
- **New `export` keywords:** four names gain one, because
`conversation.ts` still uses them: `isCommandEntry`, `claudeResultText`,
`IMAGE_TYPES` and the type `TranscriptEntry`.
- **Re-exports:** `conversation.ts` re-exports `parseClaudeTranscript`,
`createClaudeTranscriptParser` and `unwrapPastes`. Its other imports
narrow to what it still uses.
- **Not moved:** the parser holds no module state (its state lives in
closures), so no cache changes owner.

## Checks

- **`--color-moved`:** `git diff --color-moved=plain
--color-moved-ws=allow-indentation-change origin/main...HEAD -- server`
shows 831 lines as moved. The other 19 lines are the new module's
imports, `conversation.ts`'s narrowed imports, the re-export, and the
four `export` keywords.
- **No import cycle:** `bun <plan>/no-path.ts
server/claude-transcript.ts server/conversation.ts server/prompt.ts`
exits 0. It follows value imports through every file, and the new module
never reaches `conversation.ts` or `prompt.ts`.
- **Spied names stay put:** `paneTranscript`, `readCommandTranscript`
and `paneProcessRoots` are still declared in `conversation.ts`.
- **No new herdr call:** `server/claude-transcript.ts` has no `herdrRpc`
call (`server/conventions.test.ts` forbids new ones).
- **Typecheck:** `bun run typecheck` passes.
- **Unit tests:** **212 pass, 0 fail**, from:

`HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test server/chat-history.test.ts
server/claude-incremental.test.ts server/claude-turn-boundaries.test.ts
server/skill-activity.test.ts server/conversation.test.ts
server/native-incremental.test.ts server/large-history-agents.test.ts
server/outcome-transcript*.test.ts`
- `bun run check fast`: passes (unit 6251 pass, 0 fail, 13 skip in 443
files, 8 at a time, 73.4s)
- **Integration lane:** CI runs `claude-session.contract` and
`conversation-push.contract`.

## Outside PRs that touch the same files

No other maintainer PR touches these files. Three outside contributors'
PRs touch `server/conversation.ts`. I checked each against this branch
with `git merge-tree`:
- **#1706** still merges cleanly.
- **#1652** conflicts only in two import blocks at the top of
`conversation.ts`: the `../shared/protocol.ts` type import, and the line
after `./tool-output.ts` where it adds its Copilot imports. Its code
changes do not touch the moved parser.
- **#1442** already conflicts with main in `conversation.ts`, and needs
a rebase either way.

Move-only: moved declarations plus imports, re-exports and four `export`
keywords. No changelog fragment: users see no change.

…ersation-shared.ts (#1763)

Wave C2 of the per-agent module split. The plan is
`.omo/plans/agent-modules-split.md` in the maintainer's workspace, and
plan-reviewer approved it. It follows C1 (#1760) and P1b (#1761).

This wave moves the conversation types and constants that agent modules
share out of `server/conversation.ts` into a new leaf module,
`server/conversation-shared.ts`. Later waves (Devin's session lookup,
then the Claude and omp sessions) can then throw
`ConversationUnavailable` without importing `conversation.ts`.

## What changes

- **Moved verbatim, with their doc comments:**
  - `TRANSCRIPT_WINDOW_BYTES`;
- the error classes `ConversationUnavailable`, `ConversationNotStarted`
and `HistoryChanged`;
- the types `RecognizedConversation`, `StreamSource` and
`ConversationPage`;
  - `PROCESS_VERSION` and `answerVersion`.
- **State:** `PROCESS_VERSION` holds one `randomUUID()`, set once and
never changed. It moves with its only user, `answerVersion`, so it still
has a single owner.
- **New `export`:** only `StreamSource` gains one, because
`conversation.ts` imports it back.
- **Re-exports:** `conversation.ts` re-exports every name that was
exported before, so no other importer changes.
- **One import path changes on purpose:** `server/hermes.ts` now imports
the same names from `./conversation-shared.ts` instead of
`./conversation.ts`. That removes the runtime import cycle between
`hermes.ts` and `conversation.ts`.

## Checks

- **`--color-moved`:** `git diff --color-moved=plain
--color-moved-ws=allow-indentation-change origin/main...HEAD` shows 138
lines as moved. The other 8 lines are:
  - the new file's two import lines;
  - `StreamSource` with its added `export`, shown as removed and added;
  - `conversation.ts`'s import and re-export lines;
  - `hermes.ts`'s changed module path.
- **No cycles:** checked with `bun <plan>/no-path.ts`.
- With `server/conversation-shared.ts server/conversation.ts
server/prompt.ts`, it prints "no path to server/conversation.ts,
server/prompt.ts".
- With `server/hermes.ts server/conversation.ts`, it prints "no path to
server/conversation.ts". The cycle is gone.
- **Typecheck:** `bun run typecheck` passes.
- **Unit tests:** `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test server/hermes.test.ts
server/conversation.test.ts server/chat-history.test.ts`: 177 pass, 0
fail.
- `bun run check fast`: passes (unit 6253 pass, 0 fail, 13 skip in 443
files, 8 at a time, 66.5s)
- **Integration lane:** CI runs the gjc, api, opencode and hermes
contracts.

## Outside PRs that touch the same files

No other maintainer PR touches these files. Three outside contributors'
PRs touch `server/conversation.ts`. Each adds a member to
`RecognizedConversation`'s `source` union, which now lives in
`server/conversation-shared.ts`, so a rebase carries that one line into
the new file. I checked each with `git merge-tree`:
- **#1706** merges cleanly with main, and conflicts with this branch in
`server/conversation.ts`.
- **#1652** already conflicts with main in `server/conversation.ts`, and
needs a rebase either way.
- **#1442** already conflicts with main in `server/conversation.ts`, and
needs a rebase either way.

Move-only: moved declarations plus imports, one re-export line, one
added `export`, and the `hermes.ts` module path. No changelog fragment:

…nto their own modules (#1765)

Wave C3 of the per-agent module split. The plan is
`.omo/plans/agent-modules-split.md` in the maintainer's workspace, and
plan-reviewer approved it. It follows C2 (#1763), which this wave builds
on: `StreamSource` and `ConversationUnavailable` now come from
`server/conversation-shared.ts`.

This wave moves two state-free clusters out of `server/conversation.ts`
into new leaf modules. `conversation.ts` keeps every cache, `paneReads`
(including Devin's per-pane reads), the paging core and the transcript
resolvers. The three functions tests spy on (`paneTranscript`,
`readCommandTranscript`, `paneProcessRoots`) stay.

## What changes

- **`server/transcript-turns.ts`:** the turn-boundary cluster, verbatim
with its doc comments:
- `ClaudeBranch`, `claudeForks`, `answeredBetween`,
`claudeCommandEchoRecord`, `CLAUDE_CHAIN_LINE_BYTES`,
`followClaudeBranch`;
  - `PEER_MARK`, `TURN_MARK`, `opensTurn`;
  - `PromptChain`, `turnStarts`.

`followClaudeBranch` calls `opensTurn`, which `turnStarts` also needs,
so the cluster moves as one module.

`export` is added to the five names `conversation.ts` still uses:
`turnStarts`, `followClaudeBranch`, `claudeForks`, and the types
`ClaudeBranch` and `PromptChain`.
- **`server/devin-session.ts`:** `isDevinProcess` and
`devinSessionForPane`, verbatim. Both were already exported.
`conversation.ts` re-exports them for `server/session-history.ts` and
`server/conversation.test.ts`, so no importer changes.
- **`conversation.ts` imports:** the imports from
`./transcript-records.ts` and `./claude-transcript.ts` drop the names
only the moved code used.
- **Not in this wave:** `rememberPaneDevin` and `DevinPaneRead` stay,
because they are fields of `paneReads`, which
`forgetPaneTranscriptState` owns.

`server/conversation.ts` goes from 1,732 to 1,532 lines.

## Checks

- **`--color-moved`:** `git diff --color-moved=plain
--color-moved-ws=allow-indentation-change origin/main...HEAD` shows 394
lines as moved. The other 23 lines are:
  - the two new files' imports;
- `conversation.ts`'s narrowed and new imports and its one re-export
line;
- the five declarations whose only change is the added `export`, each
shown as removed and added.
- **No import cycles:** `bun <plan>/no-path.ts <new file>
server/conversation.ts server/prompt.ts` prints "no path to
server/conversation.ts, server/prompt.ts" for both new files. They
import only `conversation-shared.ts`, `transcript-records.ts`,
`claude-transcript.ts` and `shared/protocol.ts`.
- **No new herdr calls:** neither new file calls `herdrRpc`.
- **Typecheck:** `bun run typecheck` passes.
- **Unit tests:** **305 pass, 0 fail across 10 files**, from:

`HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test server/claude-turn-boundaries.test.ts
server/native-incremental.test.ts server/chat-history.test.ts
server/pi.test.ts server/pi-tree.test.ts server/pi-large-history.test.ts
server/grok.test.ts server/cmd.test.ts server/conversation.test.ts
server/devin.test.ts`
- `bun run check fast`: passes (unit 6253 pass, 0 fail, 13 skip in 443
files, 8 at a time, 58.7s)
- **Integration lane:** runs in CI.

## Outside PRs that touch the same files

No other maintainer PR touches these files. Three outside contributors'
PRs touch `server/conversation.ts`: #1706, #1652 and #1442.
- **Status:** each already conflicts with main there, so it needs a
rebase either way.
- **What the rebase carries:** #1706, #1652 and #1442 edit `TURN_MARK`,
`opensTurn` or `followClaudeBranch`. Those edits move to
`server/transcript-turns.ts` in the rebase.

Move-only: moved declarations plus imports, five added `export`s and one
re-export line. No changelog fragment: users see no change.

Thanks for the review. The branch is rebased onto main, and the fixes are in ee8a9c97, on top of the rebased original. The TURN_MARK and opensTurn edits are now in server/transcript-turns.ts, and the source name is in server/conversation-shared.ts.

  1. Bounded lookup. Each binding is kept per process, by pid and store. A later resolve checks only that lock (pid, host, written since the process started) and the log end. The store is scanned again only when that check fails, for example after a /resume switch. The scan lists the session folders first and stops before it reads a lock when there are more than 4096, as MAX_GROUPS does in grok-store.ts.
  2. Final answer. A run that ends with terminal: "completed" tags its last part final_answer when that part is answer text. A run that ends on a tool, on commentary, or as failed / cancelled gets no tag.
  3. Launcher nit. The resolve takes every Muse foreground process, and exactly one session must be bound across all of them. A muse launcher alive beside muse-bin-… holds no lock, so the child's session binds.
  4. The ponytail: notes are now in their doc comments.

Measured on synthetic stores, with locks older than the process as in real use:

Sessions First bind Later resolves
1,000 4.5 ms 0.02 ms
4,096 12.3 ms 0.02 ms
5,000 not scanned (3 ms to list) 3 ms, Terminal

On my 9 live Muse panes (161 sessions), each pane binds its own session: 1.5 ms first, 0.11 ms after.

One ceiling remains, named in the doc comment: while a pane's processes bind no session, each resolve scans again. A failed scan can be remembered if a pane stays in that state.

Checks: server/muse.test.ts 14 pass (new cases for the kept binding and its rescan, pid reuse, the launcher, the 4096 cap and the final answer). api.contract.test.ts 149 pass, 6 skip. In bun run check fast, typecheck and build pass. The unit failures on this headless Mac are check, remote-entry, install-star and agy, which fail the same way on unchanged main, and files.test.ts (git inventory timing), which passes alone.

Understood that this still waits on the decision on #1702.

Review on devswha#1706:
- Keep each pane's binding per process and check only its lock and log
  end on later resolves; scan the store again only when that check fails,
  as after an in-TUI switch. Stop before any lock is read when the store
  holds more than 4096 sessions, as grok-store.ts does.
- Tag the last answer `final_answer` when the run ends with `terminal:
  "completed"`, so Chat marks a finished Muse turn as done.
- Take every Muse foreground process, so a `muse` launcher alive beside
  its `muse-bin-…` child no longer leaves the pane on Terminal.
- Move the ponytail notes into their doc comments.

Thanks. All four items are in 524d049a.

  1. Rescan while nothing binds. The scan now stats each lock once and reads it only when it is new enough for one of the pane's processes, then matches the pid against all of them. A scan that binds nothing stands for 2 s (MISSING_RESOLVE_INTERVAL_MS) per store and set of pids. The start times are not part of the key: each reading of a start bound differs (now − elapsed on macOS, now − uptime on Linux), so an exact key never matches. The cost is that a process that takes a pid back within 2 s waits up to 2 s to bind. The doc comment says so.
  2. A kept binding wins. docs/muse-chat.md now says that a kept binding holds while its lock and log hold, even with a second live session for the same process, and that only a scan needs exactly one session. On the fork question: /fork does not switch the pane, so the source log gets no session.end. Muse 1.4.13 prints "Fork created … Source session stays active" and opens the fork in a new herdr tab with muse resume <fork id>. That is a separate process, which writes the fork's own lock. Each pane keeps its own session. /new and an in-TUI /resume end the log they leave (checked live, below).
  3. Start slack. The 3 s margin is now for macOS only. On Linux I kept 20 ms, not 0: processStartUpperBound there can be up to two ticks late (uptime and start ticks each truncate to 10 ms, plus the added tick). With 0, a lock written within 20 ms of the exec would not bind.
  4. Guide. The Muse row now starts with Linux untested with real Muse.

Cost of a resolve that binds nothing, on this Mac mini (M4, macOS), synthetic stores with locks older than the process:

Sessions Before Before, launcher Scan now Scan now, launcher Within 2 s
1,000 2.7 ms 3.8 ms 2.6 ms 2.8 ms 0 ms
4,096 8.6 ms 14.2 ms 8.8 ms 9.4 ms 0 ms

Live check with real Muse 1.4.13 on this Mac, in an isolated herdr session, with a temporary Muse data folder:

  • Muse 1.4.13 writes its session at startup. Chat bound a fresh pane 0.6 s after launch.
  • With the echo provider, the prompt and the answer showed, and the answer was tagged final_answer.
  • /fork: the source pane kept its session and turns, and the fork's tab bound the fork's session.
  • /new: the old log ended with session.end, and Chat moved to the new session.
  • /resume <id> in the TUI: the /new session ended, and Chat moved back to the first session, with the same history_id.
  • With the real model (muse-spark-1.3), commentary, a bash call with its output, and the answer showed, and the answer was tagged final_answer after terminal: "completed". The model name showed.
  • On 1.4.13, the launcher replaces itself with muse-bin, so each pane had one Muse process. Muse also empties the lock of a session it leaves, which parseMuseLock already reads as no owner.

One gap the live check found: a fork's log starts with session.fork.turn records, which copy the earlier turns as {prompt, answer}. Chat does not read them, so a fork's Chat starts at the fork. I listed it under Limits in docs/muse-chat.md. I can add it in a follow-up if you want it.

Checks: server/muse.test.ts 15 pass. The new case covers the 2 s miss, and it fails without the change. The Muse contract case passes. It now polls for up to 5 s, because the scan before the lock is written stands for 2 s. In bun run check fast, typecheck and build pass. The unit failures on this Mac are remote-entry, install-star and agy, which fail the same way on unchanged main, and files and portal, which pass alone.

Thanks for this, @jpcarranza94. The maintainer is happy to take Muse Code chat, on two conditions for an agent whose transcript format Ovis doesn't control:

  1. A test against a recorded real Muse Code session. server/fixtures/muse/session.jsonl is a hand-written fixture in Muse's record shapes, which its README says. Please add a fixture captured from a real muse run, such as a short session with tool calls, a declined call and a /model switch, with paths and text replaced but the record structure left exactly as Muse wrote it. Then test the reader against it. That way, a change in Muse's format breaks a test here, rather than a user's chat.
  2. Fall back to the terminal when a session can't be read. If the session log is missing, unreadable, or in a shape the reader doesn't recognise, the pane should open as a plain terminal, as other agents do, never as an empty or half-parsed chat. Please add a test for this: an unknown record shape or an unreadable log leads to the terminal view.

Before merge, the PR also needs:

  • a rebase onto main, because git merge-tree now shows a conflict;
  • answers to the 4 open review threads.

Once those are in, the merge pass will review it and merge it.

Thanks. All four are in. The branch is rebased onto main, and the new commit is df81431.

  1. A test against a recorded session. server/fixtures/muse/recorded-1.4.13.jsonl is a session that real Muse 1.4.13 wrote on macOS, in an isolated herdr session with a temporary data directory and a throwaway folder. It holds three prompts, five tool calls (a file read, a passing and a failing command, a call declined at the approval prompt, one more after the switch), a /model switch from muse-spark-1.3 to muse-spark-1.2, and /exit. Every record, key and key order is as Muse wrote it, the retained_marker and retained_frame lines included. Only paths and text that is not the conversation were replaced: base_instructions, the context messages Muse built from my rules files, the reminder agents' prompts and the encrypted reasoning. The fixture's README lists each one. The prompts and answers are the session's own, about fictional files. muse.test.ts reads it: the turns, prompts, each tool's output and failure, the model before and after /model, a page equal to the parse, a whole tool output by its real call id, and the session end. The fictional fixture stays for a compaction and a long output, which the recording does not have.
  2. Terminal when a session cannot be read. A missing or unreadable log already answered scrollback. Now parseMuseTranscript throws MuseUnavailable, which also answers scrollback, as GrokUnavailable does, in two cases: a whole line that does not open a version 1 record or a retained line, or a record the reader takes in another shape (a prompt without model_messages, a tool call without name, a result without text). The last line is skipped until it is whole, because Muse can still be writing it. Bookkeeping records that Muse adds later are still skipped. muse.test.ts refuses six shapes and accepts a half-written last line. The contract case answers scrollback for a record of another shape and for an unreadable log (chmod 0), and Chat again once the log is whole. I also ran the strict reader read-only over all 160 Muse 1.4.x session logs on this Mac, so that it sends no real session to Terminal. All of them read (2,538 turns). The first run refused one log: a fork's session.fork.compaction record has no recorded_at, so that field is no longer required.
  3. Rebase onto main. The conflicts were in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md (both sections kept) and an import line in server/transcript-turns.ts.
  4. Review threads. Each of the four had an answer in its thread, and I resolved them now. The commit they name, 524d049, is 36ea16c after the rebase.

Checks: muse.test.ts 17 pass, and the Muse contract case passes in an isolated herdr. In bun run check fast, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 12 fail in 9 files, and the same 12 fail on unchanged main on this headless Mac when each file runs alone: scripts/check, scripts/ci-browser (4), scripts/install-star, scripts/self-hosted-runner, server/claude-store, server/session-history, server/remote-entry, server/agy and server/core/composer-framing. server/shell-agent failed once under load and passes alone on both.

Merge pass review of 5b97c75: condition 1 is met, condition 2 is not yet. Reviewed by Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) and omo-native-code-reviewer (claude-opus-5-5). Both found the same blocker.

Condition 1, a test against a recorded real session: met.

  • recorded-1.4.13.jsonl looks like a real capture:
    • 500 records in one stream.
    • Sequence numbers run contiguously, with gaps only where Muse leaves its three markers for dropped records.
    • The times embedded in the UUIDv7 record and call ids match the timestamps, which increase monotonically.
  • server/muse.test.ts:108 runs the real parser, page loader, model, tool-output and session-end readers against it.

Condition 2, Terminal when the log can't be read: not met (BLOCKER, both reviewers) (server/muse.ts:37-38, :106, :118, readable() at :44-61)

  • Any line that doesn't match a known record name skips parsing and validation. readable() checks only the records the reader already takes, and accepts any other run event (:60).
  • Reproduced:
    • Unknown payload types, unknown run events and a complete malformed line return HTTP 200 with source: "muse-transcript" and zero turns.
    • Appending those to the recording keeps a partial six-turn transcript.
    • Renaming assistant_message_committed in the recorded fixture keeps the pane on Chat, with prompts, tools and thinking but no answers.
  • The unknown-record assertion at server/muse.test.ts:164 currently enforces this behaviour.
  • Needed:
    • Fall back to Terminal on any run event type outside the set seen from Muse 1.4.2 to 1.4.13, and on a complete line that doesn't parse.
    • Treat unknown prompt blocks and malformed compaction replacements the same way.
    • Add tests that rename a record type and append a malformed line.

Session safety (MAJOR, Codex):

  1. A cached binding stops enforcing uniqueness (server/muse-store.ts:118). Once session A is bound, adding a second live session B with the same fresh pid and host lock leaves A selected indefinitely, while a cold lookup on the same files returns null. The code reviewer notes that Muse 1.4.13 ends the old log and empties its lock when it switches. Still, the result must not depend on lookup history: re-check uniqueness on every resolution, and fail closed when it's ambiguous. server/muse.test.ts:221 preserves the ambiguity today.
  2. A replacement log is accepted without checking session identity (server/muse-store.ts:100). With bound session A's log replaced by records naming session B, resolution still authorised it and showed B's conversation. Check the records' session stream id against the bound session.
  3. A rewrite followed by growth keeps stale turns (server/conversation.ts:164). The generic cache treats growth as an append. With an earlier prompt replaced by equal-length text and a record appended, the old settled prompt stayed under the same history id. Validate a rewrite before reusing settled turns, as the Copilot reader now does.

Also (MEDIUM):

  • Bad record in an older page: when a bad record sits further back in the log, the newest page still shows Chat. The older page then answers Terminal, and ChatView takes that to mean "nothing older", which leaves a cut-off Chat. docs/muse-chat.md promises "never a partial conversation". Grok and Antigravity behave the same, but it should be fixed or the docs should say so.
  • Forked sessions: a forked session's Chat starts at the fork, because session.fork.turn records are skipped. Either send forks to Terminal or say plainly that this is a known limit.

Minor:

  • Lock reads aren't bounded (a 1 MiB lock is re-read in full on each poll), and directory enumeration happens before the 4,096-session cap (muse-store.ts:61, :95).
  • pane.process_info is called twice per successful request.
  • The HTTP contract test uses the hand-written fixture rather than the recorded one.
  • An image-only prompt is dropped without notice (muse.ts:48-50).
  • docs/muse-chat.md gives --timeout 15000 where the test uses 20000.

What already holds:

  • PID reuse, other hosts, ended sessions, missing logs, subagent folders and rewritten locks are handled.
  • The shared/protocol.ts change is additive (muse-transcript), and the route changes are backward compatible.
  • Each fix has a test that fails without it (19 mutations), and the unit tests use no fixed sleeps.
  • The docs, changelog and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES (MIT credit for Collie) are correct.
  • muse.test passes 17/17, typecheck is clean, git merge-tree is clean, and fork CI is approved.

Once condition 2 holds and the three session-safety items are fixed, the merge pass will re-review only the changed range.

Muse Code panes had no Chat: herdr labels them `muse` but reports no
session. Bind a pane to the session whose `.session.lock` names its Muse
process (written since the process started, log not ended), and read the
session log's prompts, answers, reasoning, tool calls and results,
compaction summaries and model through the shared transcript pager.

A pane whose Muse processes bound no session scanned the whole store on
every resolve, every 2 s from the monitor and again on each GET, with one
stat per lock and process. The scan now stats each lock once and reads it
only when it is new enough for one of the pane's processes. A scan that
binds nothing stands for 2 s per store and set of pids.

The start-time margin is 3 s on macOS only. Linux reads the start to
10 ms, so 20 ms covers it.

Docs: a kept binding holds while a second live session names the same
process; /fork keeps the source session in its pane and opens the fork in
a new tab; a fork's copied turns are not read; Linux is untested with real
Muse.

Test the reader against a session that Muse Code 1.4.13 recorded, with
its records as Muse wrote them and only paths and Muse's own prompt text
replaced: three prompts, a failed command, a declined call, a /model
switch and the session end.

A whole line that opens no version 1 record or retained line, or a
record the reader takes in another shape, now throws MuseUnavailable,
and the conversation API answers scrollback (Terminal), as for Grok.
The last line is skipped until it is whole. All 160 Muse 1.4.x session
logs on the test Mac read without a refusal.

The merge pass review of 5b97c75 found that the reader skipped records it
did not know, so a renamed record kept the pane on Chat without its answers.

- Parse every whole line. A line that does not parse, a record, session kind
  or run event outside those of 160 Muse 1.4.2-1.4.13 logs, a prompt block
  other than text or asset, or a compaction other than summary_text throws
  MuseUnavailable, so the pane uses Terminal.
- Refuse a record whose stream names another session than the log's
  folder, in the page and in Show all.
- Scan the locks on every lookup, so that two live sessions always leave
  none, whatever was bound before.
- Start a new history when a Muse log grew while the last 16 MiB it held
  before changed, so a rewrite that also grew drops the settled turns.
- Read only the first 1 KiB of a lock, and stop listing a store folder past
  4096 entries.
- Ask herdr for a Muse pane's processes once per lookup.
- Show `[Image #n]` for a prompt of pictures alone, as Muse names them.
- Run the contract case on the recorded 1.4.13 session.

Thanks. Condition 2, the three session-safety items, and the medium and minor items are in a8c34bd. The branch is rebased onto main d518b71 (one conflict: the Copilot ref pattern in toolOutput).

Condition 2: Terminal when the log can't be read

  • Every whole line is now parsed (known() in server/muse.ts). These lines throw MuseUnavailable, and the pane answers scrollback:
    • a line that does not parse;
    • a record, a runtime.session kind or a run event outside the sets of Muse 1.4.2 to 1.4.13: 61 records, 5 session kinds and 56 run events, from the 160 session logs of those builds on this Mac;
    • a prompt block other than text or asset (a picture);
    • a compaction other than a summary_text with text.
  • The assertion at muse.test.ts:164 that skipped an unknown record now expects a refusal. The test renames a record type, a run event and a session kind, and renames assistant_message_committed in the recording itself. It also appends a complete malformed line, an unknown prompt block and two bad compactions. Each one throws, and a page of it throws ConversationUnavailable. The contract case appends a renamed record and gets scrollback.
  • The strict reader still reads all 160 real logs (2,538 turns) without a refusal. Parsing every line costs about 16 ms for a 16 MiB page of the largest log (194 MB).

Session safety

  1. Cached binding: removed. Every lookup scans the locks, so two live sessions leave none, whatever was bound before. A scan that binds nothing still stands for 2 s. The test at muse.test.ts:221 now expects null for the second live session.
  2. Replacement log: each record's stream must name the session that the log's folder is named after. Muse names each folder after its session, and all 160 real logs agree. A log of session B in A's folder answers Terminal, and Show all returns nothing from it.
  3. Rewrite and growth: for a Muse log, the generation also changes when the log grew while the last 16 MiB it held before changed. The check is a SHA-256 of that window, read again only when the file changed. The settled turns, the cursors and history_id are then new. Test: the first prompt rewritten with text of the same length, plus an appended record, shows the new prompt under a new history id, equal to a cold read. A rewrite further back than 16 MiB in a log that also grew is not seen, and the docs say so. I kept the check to the window because the largest real log is 194 MB, and a whole-log hash on every append costs much more. If you want the whole log hashed, I can change it.

Medium

  • Bad record in an older page: documented as a limit, the same as for Grok and Antigravity. The docs no longer promise "never a partial conversation".
  • Forked sessions: documented plainly as a limit: Chat starts at the fork.

Minor

  • A lock is read up to 1 KiB, and a store folder is listed only up to 4,096 entries (opendirSync), so a larger one is not read.
  • A Muse pane's pane.process_info is read once and passed to the omo check and to the lock lookup.
  • The contract test runs on the recorded 1.4.13 session.
  • A prompt of pictures alone shows Muse's own [Image #n] names. Muse writes those names into the text when the prompt has text.
  • docs/muse-chat.md gives --timeout 20000.

Each new check fails its test when it is taken out (12 mutations).

Checks:

  • muse.test.ts: 21 pass.
  • The Muse contract case passes in an isolated herdr.
  • Typecheck and build pass.
  • bun run check fast: the same 12 unit tests fail on unchanged main on this headless Mac. shell-agent and portal fail only under load and pass alone.

Merge pass review report. Overall: PASSED. The maintainer accepted this outside contribution once two conditions were met: a recorded real Muse session fixture, and a Terminal fallback whenever the reader can't read something.

Reviews of fix a8c34bd:

  • omo-native-code-reviewer (claude-opus-5-5): PASS. For each fix it mutated the code back and confirmed the new test fails.
  • Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): fixed every earlier reproduction. It held one BLOCKER, which the maintainer accepted as a known limit (below).

Condition 1, recorded fixture: met. The 504-line recorded 1.4.13 session has coherent UUIDv7 times, monotonic timestamps and contiguous sequences. server/muse.test.ts runs the real parser, transcript reader, metadata and tool-output reader against it.

Condition 2, Terminal fallback: met (maintainer's decision).

  • Every whole line is parsed against allow-lists drawn from 160 real Muse 1.4.2–1.4.13 logs. A malformed line, an unknown record, session kind, run event or prompt block, or an unknown compaction throws MuseUnavailable, and the pane uses Terminal.
  • The fallback applies to the page being read. When the unreadable record is on an older page, the latest page keeps Chat and that older page falls back to Terminal. Grok and Antigravity behave the same way, and the maintainer accepted this.

Earlier session-safety findings, all fixed:

  • Cached binding: a cached binding no longer outlives a second live session. Every lookup rescans the locks, so two live sessions bind none.
  • Foreign-session records: a record whose stream names a session other than the log's folder is refused, both on the page and in Show all.
  • Rewrite then growth: a log that grew while its last 16 MiB changed starts a new history.
  • Bounded reads: lock reads stop at 1 KiB, the store-folder listing stops at 4096 entries, and herdr is asked for the pane's processes once per lookup.

Checks:

Accepted limits, tracked in #1962:

  • The fallback is per page.
  • The rewrite window is 16 MiB.
  • Allow-list coverage of fork and subagent records and non-text prompt blocks is unconfirmed.
  • Each growth of the log is hashed twice.

## Release 0.4.18

The release PR, made by the steps in
[docs/development.md#releasing](docs/development.md#releasing):

- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.18 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.18 2026-10-26` moved
the 6 `changelog.d` fragments into CHANGELOG.md, with PR links, and
deleted them. The outside contributors are credited: #1706
@jpcarranza94, #1952 @mattmarcin, #1956 @YuuuXie.
- **Release summaries:** `release-summaries.json` has the 0.4.18 entry
in en, ko, ja and zh, with the same lists in each: 1 new, 1 improved, 3
fixed. Every line is under the limit.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` goes from 36 to 37 in
`shared/machines.ts`, because the remote bundle's inputs changed since
`remote-v36`. Once this merges, `remote-v37` is pushed on the merge
commit before the Release run.

`bun scripts/release-guards.ts` reports: "Release 0.4.18: remote bundle,
telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order." No telemetry Worker
deploy is needed. `bun run check fast` passes locally.

The maintainer approved this release. CI runs on GitHub-hosted runners
(`CI_SELF_HOSTED_LABELS=ubuntu-24.04`).
