fix(chat): read Copilot tool outputs at verified record offsets - #1956
🤖 Scanning only the first 32 MiB hides recent Copilot results. Generate signed references for parser-associated root request/result records, then read those bounded records through a pinned descriptor. Old paginated references survive appends; record fingerprints, current history/session and post-read ownership checks reject stale or substituted results.
The 35,396,891-byte regression retrieves both old and recent results. Malformed, oversized and orphan records fail closed. Legacy internal raw-ID lookup remains capped; HTTP uses signed refs. Existing clients must refresh obsolete refs after a server restart.
Validation
bun test ./server/copilot.test.ts --timeout 30000: passed, 50 tests.
bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 server/copilot.contract.test.ts: passed, 3 tests, on the clean commit.
UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=2 bun run check fast (umask 022): passed, 7,137 tests, 24 existing skips; workflow/generated/typecheck/build passed.
Separate code and final-evidence reviews found no substantive findings. Full integration/browser lanes and native Windows were not run on this branch.
Bind root request/result offsets to signed references so older and recent results remain accessible without scanning long transcripts. Verify current pane history and record contents before serving an output.

Bug Fixes
Copilot chat can now open older and recent tool results in transcripts larger than 32 MiB, while preserving pagination.
Copilot transcript parsing now tracks JSONL byte offsets and creates signed references for tool outputs. The conversation endpoint validates transcript identity and resolves references directly to matching records, including for older and recent history in large transcripts.
Changes: Copilot tool-output retrieval

Summary
Track record offsets and create signed references server/copilot.ts, server/conversation.ts, server/copilot.test.ts, shared/protocol.ts
Copilot parsing retains record offsets and raw lines, then creates signed references for completed tool calls. Conversation parsing supplies byte offsets. Tests cover retrieval through the new references.
The endpoint binds references to transcript identity and dispatches offset references to a reader that checks the referenced records. Tests cover retrieval across large appends and rejection of stale, malformed, or incomplete records.
devswha/ovis#1574 — The changes make parser-associated Copilot tool results available through native conversation history, which supports the issue’s transcript behavior.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 63b84
If a Copilot transcript becomes unavailable during a request, chat may show an error instead of falling back to terminal output. This is a narrow case to fix or accept before merging.

If the canonical transcript disappears after session resolution or after reading a page, report transcript_missing rather than surfacing an unhandled filesystem error. Exercise both races through the isolated process fixture.

Final combined integration review caught a transcript-disappearance race in the added history-identity read. Fixed in 20d0ea1: pre-read and post-read identity failures now use classified transcript_missing fallback rather than HTTP 500. The isolated regression failed with ENOENT before the fix. Independent follow-up code/results review found no significant issues; focused unit tests passed (50), isolated contracts passed (3), and full fast checks passed (7,137; 24 existing skips), including typecheck/build. No safeguards were disabled.
The forged ref replaced the seal's last hex digit with 0. The seal is an HMAC
under a key drawn per process, so about one run in 16 already ended in 0 and
the read succeeded (5 of 64 runs failed). Flip the digit instead.
Verified at 40bfd8b: your two commits plus one test-only commit, reviewed against main 92beea5.
Test fix pushed (40bfd8b).server/copilot.test.ts forged a ref by replacing the seal's last hex digit with 0. The seal is an HMAC under a key drawn per process, so about one run in 16 the seal already ended in 0. The "forged" ref was then the real one, and the read succeeded. bun run check fast failed here on that line. In 64 separate runs, that test failed 5 times before the change and 0 times after it. The test now flips the digit instead. No runtime change.
Review: no blockers.
Every Copilot parse path (settled, kept, live tail, older page) passes the byte offset of its first line, so every cut output on a page gets a signed ref. An unsigned ref appears only for a record over 8 MiB, which the old lookup refused too.
The seal covers the call id, both offsets and both raw records. copilotOffsetOutput re-reads exactly those two lines and checks them as the root request and result for that id. An append keeps old refs valid, while a rewrite, a cut record or a substituted result answers 404.
The signing key lives as long as the cp… prefix, which already drew a randomUUID() per process, so a server restart invalidating refs is not new. A ref from before an upgrade (no @) answers 404 until the page's next poll hands out a new one.
A transcript that disappears during the identity checks answers transcript_missing, not a 500. That was CodeRabbit's finding, fixed in 20d0ea1.
Checks:
bun run check fast on 40bfd8b: pass (unit 7137 pass, 0 fail, 24 skip).
server/copilot.contract.test.ts could not run on this host. herdr's isolated test session never detects the Copilot stand-in, on unchanged main too, under herdr 0.9.5 and under the CI-pinned 0.9.3. CI's Integration tests job covers it once fork CI runs.
Merge order: this PR and #1955 both change server/conversation.ts and conflict there (git merge-tree), so whichever lands second needs a rebase. Both touch server/, so they wait for the 0.4.17 Release run.
Review prepared with a code-review agent and checked against the code. The merge decision stays with the maintainer's merge pass.
Merge pass review report. Overall: PASSED. This is an outside contribution that changes server behaviour (a follow-up to #1652). The maintainer approved merging it after the 0.4.17 Release run.
Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): APPROVE, with no BLOCKER, MAJOR or MINOR findings.
omo-native-code-reviewer (claude-opus-5-5): PASS.
The ext-pr-review lane had already verified the PR, and it fixed a test that failed about one run in 16.
Reads only at signed offsets:
copilotOffsetOutput (server/copilot.ts:183-212) re-signs both records at the given offsets and compares the result in constant time.
The signature covers the call ID, both offsets and the raw bytes of both records. Its key is made fresh for each server process.
The file is always the pane's own transcript, resolved by the server.
Over HTTP the ref also carries a pane prefix tied to the file's identity (device, inode, rewrite generation). It is checked before and after the read, and bare call IDs are refused.
So a crafted log, a mid-line offset or another file's bytes cannot be served.
Fails closed:
Offsets must be exact base-36 safe integers, with the request before the result.
Each record is capped at 8 MiB.
A rewrite breaks the signature, and a rotation or new inode breaks the prefix.
A transcript that disappears mid-read returns transcript_missing.
Tests:
server/copilot.test.ts passes 50/50.
Restoring the base copilot.ts, conversation.ts and shared/protocol.ts fails five tests, including both new ones.
Codex ran 13 more adversarial checks, and all passed.
The 40bfd8b fix flips the signature's last digit instead of setting it to 0, which matched the real signature about 1 time in 16. It passed 64 repetitions, and the tests use no fixed sleeps.
State: typecheck is clean, git merge-tree is clean, and there are 0 unresolved threads.
Low follow-ups (code reviewer, none blocking):
The record, 8 MiB, offset-order and post-read identity checks have no test of their own. They sit behind the signature check.
Only the contract test covers the bare-ID refusal.
One message with N tool requests can hash up to N × 8 MiB.
Tool-output links that clients hold stop working after a server restart, as the PR says.
#1955 conflicts with this PR in server/conversation.ts and needs a rebase after this merges.
## Release 0.4.18
The release PR, made by the steps in
[docs/development.md#releasing](docs/development.md#releasing):
- **Version:** `version` is 0.4.18 in `package.json` and
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- **Changelog:** `bun scripts/changelog-fold.ts 0.4.18 2026-10-26` moved
the 6 `changelog.d` fragments into CHANGELOG.md, with PR links, and
deleted them. The outside contributors are credited: #1706@jpcarranza94, #1952@mattmarcin, #1956@YuuuXie.
- **Release summaries:** `release-summaries.json` has the 0.4.18 entry
in en, ko, ja and zh, with the same lists in each: 1 new, 1 improved, 3
fixed. Every line is under the limit.
- **Remote bundle:** `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` goes from 36 to 37 in
`shared/machines.ts`, because the remote bundle's inputs changed since
`remote-v36`. Once this merges, `remote-v37` is pushed on the merge
commit before the Release run.
`bun scripts/release-guards.ts` reports: "Release 0.4.18: remote bundle,
telemetry Worker and release metadata are in order." No telemetry Worker
deploy is needed. `bun run check fast` passes locally.
The maintainer approved this release. CI runs on GitHub-hosted runners
(`CI_SELF_HOSTED_LABELS=ubuntu-24.04`).
